Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Beyond Kitaev physics in strong spin-orbit coupled magnets

We review the recent advances and current challenges in the field of strong spin-orbit coupled Kitaev materials, with a particular emphasis on the physics beyond the exactly-solvable Kitaev spin liquid point. To this end, we present a comprehensive overview of the key exchange interactions in candidate materials with a specific focus on systems featuring effectiveJeff=1/2magnetic moments. This includes, but not limited to,5d5iridates,4d5ruthenates and3d7cobaltates. Our exploration covers the microscopic origins of these interactions, along with a systematic attempt to map out the most intriguing correlated regimes of the multi-dimensional parameter space. Our approach is guided by robust symmetry and duality transformations as well as insights from a wide spectrum of analytical and numerical studies. We also survey higher spin Kitaev models and recent exciting results on quasi-one-dimensional models and discuss their relevance to higher-dimensional models. Finally, we highlight some of the key questions in the field as well as future directions.

Triple-q Order in Na_{2}Co_{2}TeO_{6} from Proximity to Hidden-SU(2)-Symmetric Point

In extended Heisenberg-Kitaev-Gamma-type spin models, hidden-SU(2)-symmetric points are isolated points in parameter space that can be mapped to pure Heisenberg models via nontrivial duality transformations. Such points generically feature quantum degeneracy between conventional single-q and exotic multi-q states. We argue that recent single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering data place the honeycomb magnet Na_{2}Co_{2}TeO_{6} in proximity to such a hidden-SU(2)-symmetric point. The low-temperature order is identified as a triple-q state arising from the Néel antiferromagnet with staggered magnetization in the out-of-plane direction via a 4-sublattice duality transformation. This state naturally explains various distinctive features of the magnetic excitation spectrum, including its surprisingly high symmetry and the dispersive low-energy and flat high-energy bands. Our result demonstrates the importance of bond-dependent exchange interactions in cobaltates, and illustrates the intriguing magnetic behavior resulting from them.

Possible intermediate quantum spin liquid phase in α-RuCl3 under high magnetic fields up to 100 T

Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of a field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform high-field magnetization measurements of α-RuCl3 up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c* axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 35 T and about 83 T, between which lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. This is in sharp contrast to the case with in-plane fields, where a single transition is found at around 7 T and the intermediate QSL phase is absent instead. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c* axis up to 90° (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the K-J-Γ-[Formula: see text] model for α-RuCl3 with a large Kitaev term we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.

Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo2(AsO4)2

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) state. One of the front-runners is BaCo₂(AsO₄)₂ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co²⁺ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type [Formula: see text] model and the XXZ[Formula: see text]model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the XXZ[Formula: see text]model but not by the [Formula: see text] model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

A magnetic continuum in the cobalt-based honeycomb magnet BaCo2(AsO4)2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are topologically ordered states of matter that host fractionalized excitations. A particular route towards a QSL is via strongly bond-dependent interactions on the hexagonal lattice. A number of Ru- and Ir-based candidate Kitaev QSL materials have been pursued, but all have appreciable non-Kitaev interactions. Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, we observed a broad magnetic continuum over a wide range of temperatures and fields in the honeycomb cobalt-based magnet BaCo₂(AsO₄)₂, which has been proposed to be a more ideal version of a Kitaev QSL. Applying an in-plane magnetic field of ~0.5 T suppresses the magnetic order, and at higher fields, applying the field gives rise to a spin-polarized state. Under a 4 T magnetic field that was oriented principally out of plane, a broad magnetic continuum was observed that may be consistent with a field-induced QSL. Our results indicate BaCo₂(AsO₄)₂ is a promising QSL candidate.

Planar thermal Hall effect of topological bosons in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3

The honeycomb magnet α-RuCl₃ has attracted considerable interest because it is proximate to the Kitaev Hamiltonian whose excitations are Majoranas and vortices. The thermal Hall conductivity κ_xy of Majorana fermions is predicted to be half-quantized. Half-quantization of κ_xy/T (T, temperature) was recently reported, but this observation has proven difficult to reproduce. Here, we report detailed measurements of κ_xy on α-RuCl₃ with the magnetic field B ∥ a (zigzag axis). In our experiment, κ_xy/T is observed to be strongly temperature dependent between 0.5 and 10 K. We show that its temperature profile matches the distinct form expected for topological bosonic modes in a Chern-insulator-like model. Our analysis yields magnon band energies in agreement with spectroscopic experiments. At high B, the spin excitations evolve into magnon-like modes with a Chern number of ~1. The bosonic character is incompatible with half-quantization of κ_xy/T.

Identification of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence

Quantum spin liquids realize massive entanglement and fractional quasiparticles from localized spins, proposed as an avenue for quantum science and technology. In particular, topological quantum computations are suggested in the non-abelian phase of Kitaev quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions, and detection of Majorana fermions is one of the most outstanding problems in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a concrete way to identify the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence. Topologically protected critical lines exist on a plane of magnetic field angles, and their shapes are determined by microscopic spin interactions. A chirality operator plays a key role in demonstrating microscopic dependences of the critical lines. We also show that the chirality operator can be used to evaluate topological properties of the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid without relying on Majorana fermion descriptions. Experimental criteria for the non-abelian spin liquid state are provided for future experiments.

Non-Abelian phase of Kitaev quantum spin liquid is promising for topological quantum computation. Here, the authors propose a way to identify the non-abelian Kitaev quantum spin liquid by magnetic field angle dependence, providing criteria for such a state for future experiments.

Revisiting Sodium Hexafluoroiridates: Perspective Precursors for Electronic, Quantum, and Related Materials

The following salts have been synthesized and structurally characterized: Na₂[IrF₆]·2H₂O (C2/m, a = 6.6327(4), b = 10.0740(6), c = 5.9283(5) Å, β = 122.3880(10)°) and Na₃[IrF₆]·2H₂O (R-3, a = 7.5963(3), b = 7.5963(3), c = 9.8056(4) Å) (for the first time) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; the unit cell parameters of a tetragonal phase (P4 ₂/mnm, a = 5.005(2), c = 10.074(4) Å) of the stable α-Na₂[IrF₆] were determined for the first time; and the unit cell parameters of β-Na₂[IrF₆] (P321, a = 9.332(4), c = 5.136(2) Å) and Na₃[IrF₆] (P2₁/n, a = 5.567(4), b = 5.778(4), c = 8.017(2) Å, β = 90.41(2)°) were determined using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The data of the thermal stability was obtained by differential thermal analysis (DTA) for all substances. The presence of Na₃[IrF₆]·H₂O monohydrate is predicted. H₂[IrF₆] was prepared in a solution and was demonstrated to behave as a strong dibasic acid.

Stripe-yzmagnetic order in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet KCeS2

Yb- and Ce-based delafossites were recently identified as effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Several Yb-based systems, such as NaYbO₂, NaYbS₂, and NaYbSe₂, exhibit no long-range order down to the lowest measured temperatures and therefore serve as putative candidates for the realization of a quantum spin liquid. However, their isostructural Ce-based counterpart KCeS₂exhibits magnetic order belowT_N= 400 mK, which was so far identified only in thermodynamic measurements. Here we reveal the magnetic structure of this long-range ordered phase using magnetic neutron diffraction. We show that it represents the so-called 'stripe-yz' type of antiferromagnetic order with spins lying approximately in the triangular-lattice planes orthogonal to the nearest-neighbor Ce-Ce bonds. No structural lattice distortions are revealed belowT_N, indicating that the triangular lattice of Ce³⁺ions remains geometrically perfect down to the lowest temperatures. We propose an effective Hamiltonian for KCeS₂, based on a fit to the results ofab initiocalculations, and demonstrate that its magnetic ground state matches the experimental spin structure.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

Half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance has recently been reported for the two-dimensional honeycomb material α-RuCl₃ We found that the half-integer thermal Hall plateau appears even for a magnetic field with no out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid. This observation suggests that the non-Abelian topological order associated with fractionalization of the local magnetic moments persists even in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions in α-RuCl₃.

Electric Probe for the Toric Code Phase in Kitaev Materials through the Hyperfine Interaction

The Kitaev model is a remarkable spin model with gapped and gapless spin liquid phases, which are potentially realized in iridates and α-RuCl_{3}. In the recent experiment of α-RuCl_{3}, the signature of a nematic transition to the gapped toric code phase, which breaks the C_{3} symmetry of the system, has been observed through the angle dependence of the heat capacity. We here propose a mechanism by which the nematic transition can be detected electrically. This is seemingly impossible because J_{eff}=1/2 spins do not have an electric quadrupole moment (EQM). However, in the second-order perturbation, the virtual state with a nonzero EQM appears, which makes the nematic order parameter detectable by nuclear magnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The purely magnetic origin of the EQM is different from conventional electronic nematic phases, allowing the direct detection of the realization of Kitaev's toric error-correction code.

Identification of magnetic interactions and high-field quantum spin liquid in α-RuCl3

The frustrated magnet α-RuCl3 constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in α-RuCl3, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on α-RuCl3.

Sign Structure of Thermal Hall Conductivity and Topological Magnons for In-Plane Field Polarized Kitaev Magnets

The appearance of half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity in α-RuCl_{3} in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields has been taken as a strong evidence for the Kitaev spin liquid. Apart from the quantization, the observed sign structure of the thermal Hall conductivity is also consistent with predictions from the exact solution of the Kitaev honeycomb model. Namely, the thermal Hall conductivity changes sign when the field direction is reversed with respect to the heat current, which is perpendicular to one of the three nearest neighbor bonds on the honeycomb lattice. On the other hand, the thermal Hall conductivity is almost zero when the field is applied along the bond direction. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that such a peculiar sign structure of the thermal Hall conductivity is a generic property of the polarized state in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields. In this case, the thermal Hall effect arises from topological magnons with finite Chern numbers, and the sign structure follows from the symmetries of the momentum space Berry curvature. Using a realistic spin model with bond-dependent interactions, we show that the thermal Hall conductivity can have a magnitude comparable to that observed in the experiments. Hence, the sign structure alone cannot make a strong case for the Kitaev spin liquid. The quantization at very low temperatures, however, will be a decisive test as the magnon contribution vanishes in the zero temperature limit.

Electrical Access to Ising Anyons in Kitaev Spin Liquids

We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of Z_{2} vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons (Z_{2} vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.

Tuning Topological Orders by a Conical Magnetic Field in the Kitaev Model

We show that a conical magnetic field H=(1,1,1)H can be used to tune the topological order and hence, anyon excitations of the Z_{2} quantum spin liquid in the isotropic antiferromagnetic Kitaev model. A novel topological order, featured with Chern number C=4 and Abelian anyon excitations, is induced in a narrow range of intermediate fields H_{c1}≤H≤H_{c2}. On the other hand, the C=1 Ising-topological order with non-Abelian anyon excitations, as previously known to be present at small fields, is found here to survive up to H_{c1}. The results are obtained by developing and applying a Z_{2} mean field theory that works at finite fields and is asymptotically exact in the zero field limit and the associated variational quantum Monte Carlo.

Lifshitz phase transitions in a one-dimensional Gamma model

In this paper, we study quantum phase transitions and magnetic properties of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Gamma model, which describes the off-diagonal exchange interactions between edge-shared octahedra with strong spin-orbit couplings along the sawtooth chain. The competing exchange interactions between the nearest neighbors and the second neighbors stabilize the semimetallic ground state in terms of spinless fermions, and give rise to a rich phase diagram, which consists of three gapless phases. We find distinct phases are characterized by the number of Weyl nodes in the momentum space, and such changes in the topology of the Fermi surface without symmetry breaking produce a variety of Lifshitz transitions, in which the Weyl nodes situating at k=π change from type I to type II. A coexistence of type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is found in phase II. The information measures including concurrence, entanglement entropy, and relative entropy can effectively signal the second-order transitions. The results indicate that the Gamma model can act as an exactly solvable model to describe Lifshitz phase transitions in correlated electron systems.

Majorana-Mediated Spin Transport in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We study the spin transport through the quantum spin liquid (QSL) by investigating the real-time and real-space dynamics of the Kitaev spin system with zigzag edges using the time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. After the magnetic-field pulse is introduced to one of the edges, spin moments are excited in the opposite edge region although spin moments are never induced in the Kitaev QSL region. This unusual spin transport originates from the fact that the S=1/2 spins are fractionalized into the itinerant and localized Majorana fermions in the Kitaev system. Although both Majorana fermions are excited by the magnetic pulse, only the itinerant ones flow through the bulk regime without spin excitations, resulting in the spin transport in the Kitaev system despite the presence of a nonzero spin gap. We also demonstrate that this phenomenon can be observed in the system with small Heisenberg interactions using the exact diagonalization.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma Chain and Emergent SU(2) Symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra "Γ term," using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)_{1} Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)_{1} predictions. A modified non-Abelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent "partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an O_{h}→D_{4} spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Magnetic field induced quantum phases in a tensor network study of Kitaev magnets

Recent discovery of the half quantized thermal Hall conductivity in [Formula: see text]-RuCl[Formula: see text], a candidate material for the Kitaev spin liquid, suggests the presence of a highly entangled quantum state in external magnetic fields. This field induced phase appears between the low field zig-zag magnetic order and the high field polarized state. Motivated by this experiment, we study possible field induced quantum phases in theoretical models of the Kitaev magnets, using the two dimensional tensor network approach or infinite tensor product states. We find various quantum ground states in addition to the chiral Kitaev spin liquid occupying a small area in the phase diagram. They form a band of emergent quantum phases in an intermediate window of external magnetic fields, somewhat reminiscent of the experiment. We discuss the implications of these results in view of the experiment and previous theoretical studies.

Magnon bound states versus anyonic Majorana excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet α-RuCl3

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as α-RuCl₃. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound (B = 7 − 10 T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here, we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.

α-RuCl₃ has properties consistent with predictions of a phase hosting fractionalized Majorana fermions but that could also be explained by conventional magnetic excitations. Here the authors find evidence for fractionalized quasiparticles by studying magnetic excitations across the field-temperature phase diagram.

Heisenberg-Kitaev physics in magnetic fields

Magnetic insulators in the regime of strong spin-orbit coupling exhibit intriguing behaviors in external magnetic fields, reflecting the frustrated nature of their effective interactions. We review the recent advances in understanding the field responses of materials that are described by models with strongly bond-dependent spin exchange interactions, such as Kitaev's celebrated honeycomb model and its extensions. We discuss the field-induced phases and the complex magnetization processes found in these theories and compare with experimental results in the layered Mott insulators [Formula: see text]-RuCl₃ and Na₂IrO₃, which are believed to realize this fascinating physics.

Vison Crystals in an Extended Kitaev Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We introduce an extension of the Kitaev honeycomb model by including four-spin interactions that preserve the local gauge structure and, hence, the integrability of the original model. The extended model has a rich phase diagram containing five distinct vison crystals, as well as a symmetric π-flux spin liquid with a Fermi surface of Majorana fermions and a sequence of Lifshitz transitions. We discuss possible experimental signatures and, in particular, present finite-temperature Monte Carlo calculations of the specific heat and the static vison structure factor. We argue that our extended model emerges naturally from generic perturbations to the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Microscopic Mechanism for a Higher-Spin Kitaev Model

The spin S=1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions and strong Hund's coupling in transition metal cations. The S=1 Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions are generated from superexchange paths. Taking into account the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg term from direct-exchange paths, the Kitaev interaction dominates the physics of the S=1 system. Using an exact diagonalization technique, we show a finite regime of S=1 spin liquid in the presence of the Heisenberg interaction. Candidate materials are proposed, and generalization to higher spins is discussed.

Magnetic field-induced intermediate quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface

The Kitaev model with an applied magnetic field in the [Formula: see text] direction shows two transitions: from a nonabelian gapped quantum spin liquid (QSL) to a gapless QSL at [Formula: see text] and a second transition at a higher field [Formula: see text] to a gapped partially polarized phase, where K is the strength of the Kitaev exchange interaction. We identify the intermediate phase to be a gapless U(1) QSL and determine the spin structure function [Formula: see text] and the Fermi surface [Formula: see text] of the gapless spinons using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method for large honeycomb clusters. Further calculations of static spin-spin correlations, magnetization, spin susceptibility, and finite temperature-specific heat and entropy corroborate the gapped and gapless nature of the different field-dependent phases. In the intermediate phase, the spin-spin correlations decay as a power law with distance, indicative of a gapless phase.
