Pacific subduction control on Asian continental deformation including Tibetan extension and eastward extrusion tectonics

Oblique distribution patterns and the underlying mechanical model of orebody groups controlled by structures at different scales

The oblique distribution of orebodies is a basic feature of the spatial distribution of orebody groups in hydrothermal deposits, and it is closely related to the shearing effect. However, the oblique distribution patterns of orebody groups controlled by ore-controlling/ore-forming structures at different scales (orebody, ore deposit and ore field scales) and the underlying formation mechanism are unclear but could be used to directly constrain mineral exploration and prospecting breakthroughs in the deep and peripheral areas of ore deposits. This paper uses the northeastern Yunnan Ge-rich Pb-Zn ore concentration area in the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou metallogenic area as an example to analyse and demonstrate the oblique distribution patterns of orebodies (orebody groups) controlled by ore-forming/ore-controlling structures at different scales and the underlying mechanical model based on the Theory and Methods of Ore field Geomechanics. The results indicate that in 3D space, the oblique distributions of orebodies (veins), orebody groups and ore deposits are controlled by the mechanical properties, kinematic characteristics, and tectonic stress fields of ore-forming/ore-controlling fault structures of different sequences during the mineralization period. This study has an important guiding role for ore field-scale exploration deployment, evaluation of deep and peripheral prospecting, and exploration project arrangement, with the aim of helping mining companies increase resource reserves and production.

Geodynamic models of Indian continental flat slab subduction with implications for the topography of the Himalaya-Tibet region

The slab structure and high elevation of the Himalaya-Tibet region and their underlying mechanisms have been widely discussed. Many studies interpret a flat slab segment of Indian continental lithosphere located below the overriding plate, but interpretations of the northward extent of the flat slab differ substantially, with minimum estimates placing the boundary at the northern margin of the Himalaya (Indus-Yarlung Tsangpo suture), and maximum estimates placing it at the northern boundary of Tibet. In this study, we investigate for the first time if a flat slab segment of subducted buoyant Indian continental lithosphere below the Himalaya-Tibet region is geodynamically feasible and we quantify its northward extent, as well as its contribution to the high topography of the region. We conduct three large-scale fully-dynamic (buoyancy-driven) analogue experiments to simulate the subduction of the Indian continent. Our preferred, and geodynamically most feasible, model shows a continental flat slab extending northward up to ~ 320 km from the Himalayan thrust front, in agreement with recent estimates. Furthermore, it suggests that the positively buoyant flat slab segment of the Indian continent contributes some ~ 1.5-2 km to the high topography of the Himalaya-Southern Tibet region by providing an upward force to elevate the overriding Eurasian plate.

Seismic constraints and geodynamic implications of differential lithosphere-asthenosphere flow revealed in East Asia

During the last 50 Ma, the East Asian continent has been a zone of massive continental collision and lithospheric deformation. While the consequences of this for Asian surface and lithospheric deformation have been intensively studied over the past 4 decades, the relationships between lithospheric deformation and underlying asthenospheric flow have been more difficult to constrain. Here we present a high resolution 3-D azimuthal anisotropy model for the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and its eastward continuation based on surface-wave tomography and shear-wave splitting measurements. This model shows that eastward lateral flow of asthenosphere beneath the northeastern Tibetan Plateau is being blocked by thick Ordos and Sichuan cratonic keels. The damming effect of these keels induces flow to first rotate around the Ordos keel and then transition into strong east-west flow beneath the thinner lithosphere that forms the lithospheric suture between the two cratonic keels. We further find that asthenosphere flow directions can differ from those of overlying lithosphere, with the asthenosphere neither being passively dragged by overlying lithosphere, nor being able to drag the overlying plate to mimic its subsurface flow. Finally, the region of eastward-channeled asthenospheric flow from Tibet underlies a belt of stronger intracontinental deformation in eastern China.

New seismological data from the Calabrian arc reveal arc-orthogonal extension across the subduction zone

The Calabrian Arc subduction-rollback system along the convergent Africa/Eurasia plate boundary is among the most active geological structures in the Mediterranean Sea. However, its seismogenic behaviour is largely unknown, mostly due to the lack of seismological observations. We studied low-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes recorded by the seismic network onshore, integrated by data from a seafloor observatory (NEMO-SN1), to compute a lithospheric velocity model for the western Ionian Sea, and relocate seismic events along major tectonic structures. Spatial changes in the depth distribution of earthquakes highlight a major lithospheric boundary constituted by the Ionian Fault, which separates two sectors where thickness of the seismogenic layer varies over 40 km. This regional tectonic boundary represents the eastern limit of a domain characterized by thinner lithosphere, arc-orthogonal extension, and transtensional tectonic deformation. Occurrence of a few thrust-type earthquakes in the accretionary wedge may suggest a locked subduction interface in a complex tectonic setting, which involves the interplay between arc-orthogonal extension and plate convergence. We finally note that distribution of earthquakes and associated extensional deformation in the Messina Straits region could be explained by right-lateral displacement along the Ionian Fault. This observation could shed new light on proposed mechanisms for the 1908 Messina earthquake.

Normal Faulting in the 2020 Mw 6.2 Yutian Event: Implications for Ongoing E–W Thinning in Northern Tibet

Extensional earthquakes in the Tibetan Plateau play an important role in the plateau’s orogenic evolution and cause heavy seismic hazard, yet their mechanisms remain poorly known, in particular in harsh northern Tibet. On 25 June 2020, a Mw 6.2 earthquake struck Yutian, Xinjiang, offering us a rare chance to gain insights into its mechanism and implications in the Tibetan extension. We used both descending and ascending Sentinel-1 images to generate coseismic deformation associated with this event, which indicates a typical extensional mechanism with a maximum subsidence displacement of 25 cm and minor uplift. The causative fault constrained with interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data based on a finite fault model suggests that the fault plane has a strike of 186.4° and westward dip of 64.8°, and the main rupture is concentrated at a depth of 3.6–10.8 km with a peak slip of 0.85 m. Our source model indicates that the 2020 Yutian event ruptured an unknown high-angle blind normal fault with N–S striking. The total released geodetic moment yields 2.69 × 1018 N·m, equivalent to Mw 6.23. We used dense interseismic global positioning system (GPS) measurements to reveal an approximate 7 mm/yr extensional motion in the Yutian region, but it still does not seem large enough to support high local seismicity for normal events within 12 years, i.e., Mw 7.1 in 2008, Mw 6.2 in 2012, and this event in 2020. Combined with Coulomb stress change modeling, we speculate that the seismicity in Yutian is related to the lower lithospheric dynamics.
