A first principles method to determine speciation of carbonates in supercritical water

Solvation Properties of Neutral Gold Species in Supercritical Water Studied By THz Spectroscopy

Supercritical water provides distinctly different solvation properties compared to what is known from liquid water. Despite its prevalence deep in the Earth's crust and its role in chemosynthetic ecosystems in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents, molecular insights into its solvation mechanisms are still very scarce compared to what is known for liquid water. Recently, neutral metal particles have been detected in hydrothermal fluids and proposed to explain the transport of gold species to ore deposits on Earth. Using ab initio molecular dynamics, we elucidate the solvation properties of small gold species at supercritical conditions. The neutral metal clusters themselves contribute enormous THz intensity not because of their intramolecular vibrations, but due to their pronounced electronic polarization coupling to the dynamical supercritical solvent, leading to a continuum absorption up to about 1000 cm-1. On top, long-lived interactions between the gold clusters and solvation water leads at these supercritical conditions to a sharp THz resonance that happens to be close to the one due to H-bonding in liquid water at ambient conditions. The resulting distinct resonances can be used to analyse the solvation properties of neutral metal particles in supercritical aqueous solutions.

Raman and IR spectra of water under graphene nanoconfinement at ambient and extreme pressure-temperature conditions: a first-principles study

The nanoconfinement of water can result in dramatic differences in its physical and chemical properties compared to bulk water. However, a detailed molecular-level understanding of these properties is still lacking. Vibrational spectroscopy, such as Raman and infrared, is a popular experimental tool for studying the structure and dynamics of water, and is often complemented by atomistic simulations to interpret experimental spectra, but there have been few theoretical spectroscopy studies of nanoconfined water using first-principles methods at ambient conditions, let alone under extreme pressure-temperature conditions. Here, we compute the Raman and IR spectra of water nanoconfined by graphene at ambient and extreme pressure-temperature conditions using ab initio simulations. Our results revealed alterations in the Raman stretching and low-frequency bands due to the graphene confinement. We also found spectroscopic evidence indicating that nanoconfinement considerably changes the tetrahedral hydrogen bond network, which is typically found in bulk water. Furthermore, we observed an unusual bending band in the Raman spectrum at ∼10 GPa and 1000 K, which is attributed to the unique molecular structure of confined ionic water. Additionally, we found that at ∼20 GPa and 1000 K, confined water transformed into a superionic fluid, making it challenging to identify the IR stretching band. Finally, we computed the ionic conductivity of confined water in the ionic and superionic phases. Our results highlight the efficacy of Raman and IR spectroscopy in studying the structure and dynamics of nanoconfined water in a large pressure-temperature range. Our predicted Raman and IR spectra can serve as a valuable guide for future experiments.

Raman Spectra of Electrified Si-Water Interfaces: First-Principles Simulations

We investigate the Raman spectra of liquid water in contact with a semiconductor surface using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on a hydrogenated silicon-water interface and compute the Raman spectra from time correlation functions of the polarizability. We establish a relationship between Raman spectral signatures and structural properties of the liquid at the interface, and we identify the vibrational impacts of an applied electric field. We show that negative bias leads to a reduction of the number of hydrogen bonds (HBs) formed between the surface and the topmost water layer and an enhancement of the HB interactions between water molecules. Instead, positive bias leads to an enhancement of both the HB interactions between water and the surface and between water molecules, creating a semi-ordered interfacial layer. Our work provides molecular-level insights into electrified semiconductor/water interfaces and the identification of specific structural features through Raman spectroscopy.

Designing a multilayer film via machine learning of scientific literature

Scientists who design chemical substances often use materials informatics (MI), a data-driven approach with either computer simulation or artificial intelligence (AI). MI is a valuable technique, but applying it to layered structures is difficult. Most of the proposed computer-aided material search techniques use atomic or molecular simulations, which are limited to small areas. Some AI approaches have planned layered structures, but they require a physical theory or abundant experimental results. There is no universal design tool for multilayer films in MI. Here, we show a multilayer film can be designed through machine learning (ML) of experimental procedures extracted from chemical-coating articles. We converted material names according to International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry rules and stored them in databases for each fabrication step without any physicochemical theory. Compared with experimental results which depend on authors, experimental protocol is superiority at almost unified and less data loss. Connecting scientific knowledge through ML enables us to predict untrained film structures. This suggests that AI imitates research activity, which is normally inspired by other scientific achievements and can thus be used as a general design technique.

Mediating the Local Oxygen-Bridge Interactions of Oxysalt/Perovskite Interface for Defect Passivation of Perovskite Photovoltaics

Passivation, as a classical surface treatment technique, has been widely accepted in start-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) that can effectively modulate the electronic and chemical property of defective perovskite surface. The discovery of inorganic passivation compounds, such as oxysalts, has largely advanced the efficiency and lifetime of PSCs on account of its favorable electrical property and remarkable inherent stability, but a lack of deep understanding of how its local configuration affects the passivation effectiveness is a huge impediment for future interfacial molecular engineering. Here, we demonstrate the central-atom-dependent-passivation of oxysalt on perovskite surface, in which the central atoms of oxyacid anions dominate the interfacial oxygen-bridge strength. We revealed that the balance of local interactions between the central atoms of oxyacid anions (e.g., N, C, S, P, Si) and the metal cations on perovskite surface (e.g., Pb) generally determines the bond formation at oxysalt/perovskite interface, which can be understood by the bond order conservation principle. Silicate with less electronegative Si central atoms provides strong O-Pb motif and improved passivation effect, delivering a champion efficiency of 17.26% for CsPbI₂Br solar cells. Our strategy is also universally effective in improving the device performance of several commonly used perovskite compositions.

Advanced Materials for Energy-Water Systems: The Central Role of Water/Solid Interfaces in Adsorption, Reactivity, and Transport

The structure, chemistry, and charge of interfaces between materials and aqueous fluids play a central role in determining properties and performance of numerous water systems. Sensors, membranes, sorbents, and heterogeneous catalysts almost uniformly rely on specific interactions between their surfaces and components dissolved or suspended in the water-and often the water molecules themselves-to detect and mitigate contaminants. Deleterious processes in these systems such as fouling, scaling (inorganic deposits), and corrosion are also governed by interfacial phenomena. Despite the importance of these interfaces, much remains to be learned about their multiscale interactions. Developing a deeper understanding of the molecular- and mesoscale phenomena at water/solid interfaces will be essential to driving innovation to address grand challenges in supplying sufficient fit-for-purpose water in the future. In this Review, we examine the current state of knowledge surrounding adsorption, reactivity, and transport in several key classes of water/solid interfaces, drawing on a synergistic combination of theory, simulation, and experiments, and provide an outlook for prioritizing strategic research directions.

Solvation of simple ions in water at extreme conditions

The interaction of ions and water at high pressure and temperature plays a critical role in Earth and planetary science yet remains poorly understood. Aqueous fluids affect geochemical properties ranging from water phase stability to mineral solubility and reactivity. Here, we report first-principles molecular dynamics simulations of mono-valent ions (Li⁺, K⁺, Cl^-) as well as NaCl in liquid water at temperatures and pressures relevant to the Earth's upper mantle (11 GPa, 1000 K) and concentrations in the dilute limit (0.44-0.88 m), in the regime of ocean salinity. We find that, at extreme conditions, the average structural and vibrational properties of water are weakly affected by the presence of ions, beyond the first solvation shell, similar to what was observed at ambient conditions. We also find that the ionic conductivity of the liquid increases in the presence of ions by less than an order of magnitude and that the dielectric constant is moderately reduced by at most ∼10% at these conditions. Our findings may aid in the parameterization of deep earth water models developed to describe water-rock reactions.

Hydration of NH_{4}^{+} in Water: Bifurcated Hydrogen Bonding Structures and Fast Rotational Dynamics

Understanding the hydration and diffusion of ions in water at the molecular level is a topic of widespread importance. The ammonium ion (NH_{4}^{+}) is an exemplar system that has received attention for decades because of its complex hydration structure and relevance in industry. Here we report a study of the hydration and the rotational diffusion of NH_{4}^{+} in water using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We find that the hydration structure of NH_{4}^{+} features bifurcated hydrogen bonds, which leads to a rotational mechanism involving the simultaneous switching of a pair of bifurcated hydrogen bonds. The proposed hydration structure and rotational mechanism are supported by existing experimental measurements, and they also help to rationalize the measured fast rotation of NH_{4}^{+} in water. This study highlights how subtle changes in the electronic structure of hydrogen bonds impacts the hydration structure, which consequently affects the dynamics of ions and molecules in hydrogen bonded systems.
