Pile-up transmission and reflection of topological defects at grain boundaries in colloidal crystals

Controlled creation of point defects in three-dimensional colloidal crystals

Crystal defects crucially influence the properties of crystalline materials and have been extensively studied. Even for the simplest type of defect-the point defect-however, basic properties such as their diffusive behavior, and their interactions, remain elusive on the atomic scale. Here, we demonstrate in situ control over the creation of isolated point defects in a three-dimensional (3D) colloidal crystal allowing insight on a single-particle level. Our system consists of thermoresponsive microgel particles embedded in a crystal of nonresponsive colloids. Heating this mixed-particle system triggers the shrinking of the embedded microgels, which then vacate their lattice positions, creating vacancy-interstitial pairs. We use temperature-controlled confocal laser scanning microscopy to verify and visualize the formation of the point defects. In addition, by reswelling the microgels we quantify the local lattice distortion around an interstitial defect. Our experimental model system provides a unique opportunity to shed light on the interplay between point defects, on the mechanisms of their diffusion, on their interactions, and on collective dynamics.

Topological phases in nanoparticle monolayers: can crystalline, hexatic, and isotropic-fluid phases coexist in the same monolayer?

Topological phases are stable configurations of matter in 2-dimensions (2D) formed via spontaneous symmetry breaking. These play a crucial role in determining the system properties. Though a number of fundamental studies on topological phase transitions and topological defect dynamics have been conducted with model colloidal systems (typically microns in size), the same is lacking on nanoparticle monolayers (NPMLs, typically made of ligand-coated sub-ten nanometer particles). Here, we show that in an evaporation-driven self-assembly process, the three topological phases, namely crystalline, hexatic, and isotropic-fluid phases, can coexist within the same NPML. We associate this coexistence with the local variation in particle size, which can be described by a unique frequency parameter (p25), quantifying the fraction of NPs that has size deviation greater than or equal to 25% of the mean size (where the deviation,ζ is defined as ζ = ((|Size-mean|)/mean)). The p25-values for the three phases are distinctly different: crystalline arrangement occurs when p25 < ∼0.02, while a hexatic phase exists for 0.02 ≤ p25 ≤ 0.1. For p25 ≥ 0.1, the isotropic-fluid phase occurs. Following KTHNY-theory, we further numerically extrapolate the occurrence of each phase to the accumulated excess planar strain in the NPML due to the presence of various topological defects in the structures.

Microdynamics of active particles in defect-rich colloidal crystals

HYPOTHESIS

Because they are self-propulsive, active colloidal particles can interact with their environment in ways that differ from passive, Brownian particles. Here, we explore how interactions in different microstructural regions may contribute to colloidal crystal annealing.

EXPERIMENTS

We investigate active particles propagating in a quasi-2D colloidal crystal monolayer produced by alternating current electric fields (active-to-passive particle ratio ∼ 1:720). The active particle is a platinum Janus sphere propelled by asymmetric decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Crystals are characterized for changes in void properties. The mean-squared-displacement of Janus particles are measured to determine how active microdynamics depend on the local microstructure, which is comprised of void regions, void-adjacent regions (defined as within three particle diameters of a void), and interstitial regions.

FINDINGS

At active particle energy E_A = 2.55 k_BT, the average void size increases as much as three times and the average void anisotropy increases about 40% relative to the passive case. The average microdynamical enhancement, <δ(t)>, of Janus particles in the crystal relative to an equivalent passive Janus particle is reduced compared to that of a free, active particle (<δ(t) > is 1.88 ± 0.04 and 2.66 ± 0.08, respectively). The concentration of active particles is enriched in void and void-adjacent regions. Active particles exhibit the greatest change in dynamics relative to the passive control in void-adjacent regions (<δ(t)> = 2.58 ± 0.06). The results support the conjecture that active particle microdynamical enhancement in crystal lattices is affected by local defect structure.

Pervasive orientational and directional locking at geometrically heterogeneous sliding interfaces

Understanding the drift motion and dynamical locking of crystalline clusters on patterned substrates is important for the diffusion and manipulation of nano- and microscale objects on surfaces. In a previous work, we studied the orientational and directional locking of colloidal two-dimensional clusters with triangular structure driven across a triangular substrate lattice. Here we show with experiments and simulations that such locking features arise for clusters with arbitrary lattice structure sliding across arbitrary regular substrates. Similar to triangular-triangular contacts, orientational and directional locking are strongly correlated via the real- and reciprocal-space Moiré patterns of the contacting surfaces. Due to the different symmetries of the surfaces in contact, however, the relation between the locking orientation and the locking direction becomes more complicated compared to interfaces composed of identical lattice symmetries. We provide a generalized formalism which describes the relation between the locking orientation and locking direction with arbitrary lattice symmetries.
