Creation of acoustic vortex knots

Don't forget the boundary problem! How EM field topology can address the overlooked cousin to the binding problem for consciousness

The boundary problem is related to the binding problem, part of a family of puzzles and phenomenal experiences that theories of consciousness (ToC) must either explain or eliminate. By comparison with the phenomenal binding problem, the boundary problem has received very little scholarly attention since first framed in detail by Rosengard in 1998, despite discussion by Chalmers in his widely cited 2016 work on the combination problem. However, any ToC that addresses the binding problem must also address the boundary problem. The binding problem asks how a unified first person perspective (1PP) can bind experiences across multiple physically distinct activities, whether billions of individual neurons firing or some other underlying phenomenon. To a first approximation, the boundary problem asks why we experience hard boundaries around those unified 1PPs and why the boundaries operate at their apparent spatiotemporal scale. We review recent discussion of the boundary problem, identifying several promising avenues but none that yet address all aspects of the problem. We set out five specific boundary problems to aid precision in future efforts. We also examine electromagnetic (EM) field theories in detail, given their previous success with the binding problem, and introduce a feature with the necessary characteristics to address the boundary problem at a conceptual level. Topological segmentation can, in principle, create exactly the hard boundaries desired, enclosing holistic, frame-invariant units capable of effecting downward causality. The conclusion outlines a programme for testing this concept, describing how it might also differentiate between competing EM ToCs.

Generation of complicated millimeter-wave beams based on a wideband high-transmission polarization-independent complex-amplitude metasurface

Complex amplitude modulation metasurfaces (CAMM) that can independently control both amplitude and phase have fostered a broad research interest worldwide due to its more robust wave manipulation capability than metasurfaces that can only adjust phase. Although many CAMM structures have been reported, they still suffer from limitations such as low transmittance, complicated structure, polarization dependence, high cost, and difficulty in fabrication. This work proposes a high-transmission polarization-independent CAMM operating in an ultra-wide millimeter-wave frequency range from 30 to 50 GHz realized by cost-effective and easily implementable manners. Three CAMMs are designed to generate complicated millimeter-wave beams like holographic imaging beam, Airy beam, and vortex knot beam. The presented simulation and experimental results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the CAMMs. This work presents a new paradigm for CAMM that can be readily extended to other frequency bands. It may also advance further applications of millimeter-wave beams in communication, imaging and detection.

Theoretical Zero-Thickness Broadband Holograms Based on Acoustic Sieve Metasurfaces

Acoustic holography is an essential tool for controlling sound waves, generating highly complex and customizable sound fields, and enabling the visualization of sound fields. Based on acoustic sieve metasurfaces (ASMs), this paper proposes a theoretical design approach for zero-thickness broadband holograms. The ASM is a zero-thickness rigid screen with a large number of small holes that allow sound waves to pass through and produce the desired real image in the target plane. The hole arrangement rules are determined using a genetic algorithm and the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld theory. Because the wave from a hole has no extra phase or amplitude modulation, the intractable modulation dispersion can be physically avoided, allowing the proposed ASM-based hologram to potentially function in any frequency band as long as the condition of paraxial approximation is satisfied. Using a numerical simulation based on the combination of the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM), this research achieves broadband holographic imaging with a good effect. The proposed theoretical zero-thickness broadband hologram may provide new possibilities for acoustic holography applications.

High capacity topological coding based on nested vortex knots and links

Optical knots and links have attracted great attention because of their exotic topological characteristics. Recent investigations have shown that the information encoding based on optical knots could possess robust features against external perturbations. However, as a superior coding scheme, it is also necessary to achieve a high capacity, which is hard to be fulfilled by existing knot-carriers owing to the limit number of associated topological invariants. Thus, how to realize the knot-based information coding with a high capacity is a key problem to be solved. Here, we create a type of nested vortex knot, and show that it can be used to fulfill the robust information coding with a high capacity assisted by a large number of intrinsic topological invariants. In experiments, we design and fabricate metasurface holograms to generate light fields sustaining different kinds of nested vortex links. Furthermore, we verify the feasibility of the high-capacity coding scheme based on those topological optical knots. Our work opens another way to realize the robust and high-capacity optical coding, which may have useful impacts on the field of information transfer and storage.

Robust and high capacity optical coding will be at the base of future developments of information transfer and storage. Here the authors develop a topological all-optical coding scheme, which possesses good stability and a high capacity, using nested vortex knots and links.

Perfect low-frequency sound absorption of rough neck embedded Helmholtz resonators

In this paper, an acoustic metamaterial, composed of rough neck embedded Helmholtz resonators, is proposed to achieve perfect sound absorption in the low-frequency range. The wall shape of the embedded neck in Helmholtz resonators can be adjusted to improve the low-frequency sound absorption performance of acoustic metamaterials. As a concern, a full-rough neck embedded Helmholtz resonator (FR-NEHR) is designed, which achieves perfect sound absorption (α>0.999) with a deep subwavelength thickness ( λ/44) at 150 Hz. A theoretical model is developed to predict the performance of the FR-NEHR, which is validated against the experimental measurement and numerical simulation. The results show that for the rough embedded neck, when the axial and circumferential roughness of the neck exist, the sound energy dissipation increases not only in the neck but also in the air cavity. As a result, the acoustic absorption peak value of the FR-NEHR increases 20.2%, and the peak position shifts 20.2% to a lower frequency. This work extends Maa's 50-year-old sound absorption theory from smooth channels to full-rough channels, further developing the traditional channel sound absorption theory. It provides useful guidance for the structural design of broadband low-frequency sound-absorbing metamaterials.

Multitarget Transcranial Ultrasound Therapy in Small Animals Based on Phase-Only Acoustic Holographic Lens

Transcranial ultrasound therapy has become a noninvasive method for treating neurological and psychiatric disorders, and studies have further demonstrated that multitarget transcranial ultrasound therapy is a better solution. At present, multitarget transcranial ultrasound therapy in small animals can only be achieved by the multitransducer or phased array. However, multiple transducers may cause spatial interference, and the phased array system is complicated, expensive, and especially unsuitable for small animals. This study is the first to design and fabricate a miniature acoustic holography lens for multitarget transcranial ultrasound therapy in rats. The acoustic holographic lens, working at a frequency of 1.0 MHz, with a size of 10.08 mm ×10.08 mm and a pixel resolution of 0.72 mm, was designed, optimized, and fabricated. The dual-focus transcranial ultrasound generated based on the lens was measured; the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the focal spots in the y -direction was 2.15 and 2.27 mm and in the z -direction was 2.3 and 2.36 mm. The focal length was 5.4 mm, and the distance between the two focuses was 5.6 mm, close to the desired values of 5.4 and 6.0 mm. Finally, the multiple-target blood-brain barrier opening in rats' bilateral secondary visual cortex (mediolateral area, V2ML) was demonstrated using the transcranial ultrasound therapy system based on the lens. These results demonstrate the good performance of the multitarget transcranial ultrasound therapy system for small animals, including high spatial resolution, small size, and low cost.

Acoustic Bessel Vortex Beam by Quasi-Three-Dimensional Reflected Metasurfaces

Vortex beams have a typical characteristic of orbital angular momentum, which provides a new degree of freedom for information processing in remote communication and a form of non-contact manipulation for trapping particles. In acoustics, vortex beams are generally observed on the surface of a metamaterial structure or in a waveguide with a hard boundary owing to the characteristic of easy diffusion in free space. The realization of an acoustic vortex beam with a long-distance propagation in free space still remains a challenge. To overcome this, we report a type of acoustic Bessel vortex (ABV) beam created by a quasi-three-dimensional reflected metasurface in free space based on phase modulation. By using the Bessel and vortex phase profiles, we can realize an ABV beam with the high performances of both Bessel and vortex beams, and its effective propagation distance is larger than 9.2λ in free space. Beyond that, we discuss the bandwidth and topological charge of the ABV beam in detail, and the fractional bandwidth can reach about 0.28. The proposed ABV beam has the advantages of a high-performance vortex, long-distance propagation, and broad bandwidth, which provide a new pathway for designing multifunctional vortex devices with promising applications.

Spatially Multiplexing of Metasurface for Manipulating the Focused Trefoil and Cinquefoil Vector Light Field

The trefoil and cinquefoil vector field are of essential significance for fundamental topology properties as the Hopf link and trefoil knots in the light field. The spatially multiplexing metasurfaces were designed with two sets of periodical nanoslits arranged alternately, each had independent geometric spiral phases and metalens phases to produce and focus vortex of the corresponding circular polarized (CP) light. By arranging the orientations of the two slit sets, the two CP vortices of the desired topological charges were obtained, the superposition of the vortices were realized to generate the vector field. With the topological charges of the vortices set to one and two, and three and two, respectively, the focused trefoil and cinquefoil vector light fields were acquired. The work would be important in broadening the applications of metasurface in areas as vector beam generations and topology of light field.
