Magnetic-anisotropy modulation in multiferroic heterostructures by ferroelectric domains from first principles

First-principles calculations incorporating spin-orbit coupling are presented for a multiferroic material as a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric junction. We simulate the interface effect that cannot be described by the single-phase bulk. The in-plane uniaxial magnetic-anisotropy of Co2FeSi is observed when the ferroelectric domain is polarized parallel to the interface, whereas the magnetic anisotropy is significantly different in the plane for the electrical polarization perpendicular to the interface. While the single-phase effect dominates the main part of the modulation of the magnetic anisotropy, symmetry breaking due to the interfacial effect is observed in the ferromagnetic ultrathin films. The origin of the modulated magnetic-anisotropy can be attributed to the shifting of specific energy bands in Co2FeSi when the ferroelectric domain is modified.

Smart Biomaterials in Biomedical Applications: Current Advances and Possible Future Directions

Smart biomaterials with the capacity to alter their properties in response to an outside stimulus or from within the environment around them have picked up significant attention in the biomedical community. This is primarily due to the interest in their biomedical applications that may be anticipated from them in a considerable number of dynamic structures and devices. Shape-memory materials are some of these materials that have been exclusively used for these applications. They exhibit unique structural reconfiguration features they adapt as per the provided environmental conditions and can be designed for their enhanced biocompatibility. Numerous research initiatives have focused on these smart biocompatible materials over the last few decades to enhance their biomedical applications. Shape-memory materials play a significant role in this regard to meet new surgical and medical devices' requirements for special features and utility cases. Because of the favorable design variety, different biomedical shape-memory materials can be developed by modifying their chemical and physical behaviors to accommodate the desired requirements. In this review, recent advances and characteristics of smart biomaterials for biomedical applications are described. The authors also discuss about their clinical translations in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and medical devices.

Magnetic control over the fundamental structure of atomic wires

When reducing the size of materials towards the nanoscale, magnetic properties can emerge due to structural variations. Here, we show the reverse effect, where the structure of nanomaterials is controlled by magnetic manipulations. Using the break-junction technique, we find that the interatomic distance in platinum atomic wires is shorter or longer by up to ∼20%, when a magnetic field is applied parallel or perpendicular to the wires during their formation, respectively. The magnetic field direction also affects the wire length, where longer (shorter) wires are formed under a parallel (perpendicular) field. Our experimental analysis, supported by calculations, indicates that the direction of the applied magnetic field promotes the formation of suspended atomic wires with a specific magnetization orientation associated with typical orbital characteristics, interatomic distance, and stability. A similar effect is found for various metal and metal-oxide atomic wires, demonstrating that magnetic fields can control the atomistic structure of different nanomaterials when applied during their formation stage.

Magnetic effects can emerge due to structural variations when the size of materials is reduced towards the nanoscale. Here, Chakrabarti et al demonstrates the opposite effect, showing that the interatomic distance in atomic wires changes by up to 20% depending on the orientation of an applied magnetic field.

Strain driven phase transition and mechanism for Fe/Ir(111) films

By way of introducing heterogeneous interfaces, the stabilization of crystallographic phases is critical to a viable strategy for developing materials with novel characteristics, such as occurrence of new structure phase, anomalous enhancement in magnetic moment, enhancement of efficiency as nanoportals. Because of the different lattice structures at the interface, heterogeneous interfaces serve as a platform for controlling pseudomorphic growth, nanostructure evolution and formation of strained clusters. However, our knowledge related to the strain accumulation phenomenon in ultrathin Fe layers on face-centered cubic (fcc) substrates remains limited. For Fe deposited on Ir(111), here we found the existence of strain accumulation at the interface and demonstrate a strain driven phase transition in which fcc-Fe is transformed to a bcc phase. By substituting the bulk modulus and the shear modulus and the experimental results of lattice parameters in cubic geometry, we obtain the strain energy density for different Fe thicknesses. A limited distortion mechanism is proposed for correlating the increasing interfacial strain energy, the surface energy, and a critical thickness. The calculation shows that the strained layers undergo a phase transition to the bulk structure above the critical thickness. The results are well consistent with experimental measurements. The strain driven phase transition and mechanism presented herein provide a fundamental understanding of strain accumulation at the bcc/fcc interface.
