Superconductivity emerging from a stripe charge order in IrTe2 nanoflakes

Chemical Doping and O-Functionalization of Carbon-Based Electrode to Improve Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) holds promise for large-scale energy storage applications, despite its lower energy and power densities compared to advanced secondary batteries available today. Carbon materials are considered suitable catalyst electrodes for improving many aspects of the VRFB. However, pristine graphite structures in carbon materials are catalytically inert and require modification to activate their catalytic activity. Among the various strategies developed so far, O-functionalization and chemical doping of carbon materials are considered some of the most promising pathways to regulate their electronic structures. Building on the catalytic mechanisms involved in the VRFB, this concise review discusses recent advancements in the O-functionalization and chemical doping of carbon materials. Furthermore, it explores how these materials can be tailored and highlights future directions for developing more promising VRFBs to guide future research.

D-Wave Superconducting Gap Symmetry as a Model for Nb1−xMoxB2 (x = 0.25; 1.0) and WB2 Diborides

Recently, Pei et al. (National Science Review2023, nwad034, 10.1093/nsr/nwad034) reported that ambient pressure β-MoB2 (space group: R3¯m) exhibits a phase transition to α-MoB2 (space group: P6/mmm) at pressure P~70 GPa, which is a high-temperature superconductor exhibiting Tc=32 K at P~110 GPa. Although α-MoB2 has the same crystalline structure as ambient-pressure MgB2 and the superconducting critical temperatures of α-MoB2 and MgB2 are very close, the first-principles calculations show that in α-MoB2, the states near the Fermi level, εF, are dominated by the d-electrons of Mo atoms, while in MgB2, the p-orbitals of boron atomic sheets dominantly contribute to the states near the εF. Recently, Hire et al. (Phys. Rev. B2022, 106, 174515) reported that the P6/mmm-phase can be stabilized at ambient pressure in Nb1−xMoxB2 solid solutions, and that these ternary alloys exhibit Tc~8 K. Additionally, Pei et al. (Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron. 2022, 65, 287412) showed that compressed WB2 exhibited Tc~15 K at P~121 GPa. Here, we aimed to reveal primary differences/similarities in superconducting state in MgB2 and in its recently discovered diboride counterparts, Nb1−xMoxB2 and highly-compressed WB2. By analyzing experimental data reported for P6/mmm-phases of Nb1−xMoxB2 (x = 0.25; 1.0) and highly compressed WB2, we showed that these three phases exhibit d-wave superconductivity. We deduced 2Δm(0)kBTc=4.1±0.2 for α-MoB2, 2Δm(0)kBTc=5.3±0.1 for Nb0.75Mo0.25B2, and 2Δm(0)kBTc=4.9±0.2 for WB2. We also found that Nb0.75Mo0.25B2 exhibited high strength of nonadiabaticity, which was quantified by the ratio of TθTF=3.5, whereas MgB2, α-MoB2, and WB2 exhibited TθTF~0.3, which is similar to the TθTF in pnictides, A15 alloys, Heusler alloys, Laves phase compounds, cuprates, and highly compressed hydrides.

Possible enhancement of the superconductingTcdue to sharp Kohn-like soft phonon anomalies

Phonon softening is a ubiquitous phenomenon in condensed matter systems which is often associated with charge density wave (CDW) instabilities and anharmonicity. The interplay between phonon softening, CDW and superconductivity is a topic of intense debate. In this work, the effects of anomalous soft phonon instabilities on superconductivity are studied based on a recently developed theoretical framework that accounts for phonon damping and softening within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Model calculations show that the phonon softening in the form of a sharp dip in the phonon dispersion relation, either acoustic or optical (including the case of Kohn-type anomalies typically associated with CDW), can cause a manifold increase of the electron-phonon coupling constantλ. This, under certain conditions, which are consistent with the concept of optimal frequency introduced by Bergmann and Rainer, can produce a large increase of the superconducting transition temperatureTc. In summary, our results suggest the possibility of reaching high-temperature superconductivity by exploiting soft phonon anomalies restricted in momentum space.

Quantifying Nonadiabaticity in Major Families of Superconductors

The classical Bardeen−Cooper−Schrieffer and Eliashberg theories of the electron−phonon-mediated superconductivity are based on the Migdal theorem, which is an assumption that the energy of charge carriers, kBTF, significantly exceeds the phononic energy, ℏωD, of the crystalline lattice. This assumption, which is also known as adiabatic approximation, implies that the superconductor exhibits fast charge carriers and slow phonons. This picture is valid for pure metals and metallic alloys because these superconductors exhibit ℏωDkBTF<0.01. However, for n-type-doped semiconducting SrTiO3, this adiabatic approximation is not valid, because this material exhibits ℏωDkBTF≅50. There is a growing number of newly discovered superconductors which are also beyond the adiabatic approximation. Here, leaving aside pure theoretical aspects of nonadiabatic superconductors, we classified major classes of superconductors (including, elements, A-15 and Heusler alloys, Laves phases, intermetallics, noncentrosymmetric compounds, cuprates, pnictides, highly-compressed hydrides, and two-dimensional superconductors) by the strength of nonadiabaticity (which we defined by the ratio of the Debye temperature to the Fermi temperature, TθTF). We found that the majority of analyzed superconductors fall into the 0.025≤TθTF≤0.4 band. Based on the analysis, we proposed the classification scheme for the strength of nonadiabatic effects in superconductors and discussed how this classification is linked with other known empirical taxonomies in superconductivity.

Phase and polarization modulation in two-dimensional In2Se3 via in situ transmission electron microscopy

Phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) materials promise reversible modulation of material physical and chemical properties in a wide range of applications. 2D van der Waals layered In₂Se₃ with bistable out-of-plane ferroelectric (FE) α phase and antiferroelectric (AFE) β' phase is particularly attractive for its electronic applications. However, reversible phase transition in 2D In₂Se₃ remains challenging. Here, we introduce two factors, dimension (thickness) and strain, which can effectively modulate the phases of 2D In₂Se₃. We achieve reversible AFE and out-of-plane FE phase transition in 2D In₂Se₃ by delicate strain control inside a transmission electron microscope. In addition, the polarizations in 2D FE In₂Se₃ can also be manipulated in situ at the nanometer-sized contacts, rendering remarkable memristive behavior. Our in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) work paves a previously unidentified way for manipulating the correlated FE phases and highlights the great potentials of 2D ferroelectrics for nanoelectromechanical and memory device applications.

Method to extracting the penetration field in superconductors from DC magnetization data

The lower critical field, B_c1, is one of the fundamental quantities of a superconductor that directly manifests the Cooper pair bulk density in the material. Although this field can be measured using several techniques, the most conventional method is to calculate this field from the experimentally measured DC penetration field, B_p, which is defined as the starting point of the deviation of the DC magnetization curve, M(B_appl), from a linear dependence. Surprisingly, we found no mathematical routine that describes how this starting point of deviation can be found. Here, we propose the extraction of B_p from the fit of the M(B_appl) dataset to the power law, where the threshold criterion M_c can be established by a convention. The advantage of this approach is that the procedure extracts one additional characteristic parameter: the power-law exponent. We demonstrated the applicability of this approach to polycrystalline ThIr₃, WB_4.2, BaTi₂Bi₂O, and Th₄H₁₅; thin films of Pb and MgB₂; and Nb single crystal. In most reports, B_c1(T) analysis is limited by the extraction of the London penetration depth. We advanced the analysis to extract primary thermodynamic superconducting parameters [i.e., the ground state superconducting energy gap, Δ(0); the relative jump in electronic specific heat at transition temperature, ΔCγT_c; and the gap-to-transition temperature ratio, 2Δ0k_BT_c] from B_c1(T) data. This extraction was performed for Nb, ThIr₃, TaRh₂B₂, and NbRh₂B₂.

Large-gap insulating dimer ground state in monolayer IrTe2

Monolayers of two-dimensional van der Waals materials exhibit novel electronic phases distinct from their bulk due to the symmetry breaking and reduced screening in the absence of the interlayer coupling. In this work, we combine angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to demonstrate the emergence of a unique insulating 2 × 1 dimer ground state in monolayer 1T-IrTe₂ that has a large band gap in contrast to the metallic bilayer-to-bulk forms of this material. First-principles calculations reveal that phonon and charge instabilities as well as local bond formation collectively enhance and stabilize a charge-ordered ground state. Our findings provide important insights into the subtle balance of interactions having similar energy scales that occurs in the absence of strong interlayer coupling, which offers new opportunities to engineer the properties of 2D monolayers.

Nanomaterials for Quantum Information Science and Engineering

Quantum information science and engineering (QISE)-which entails the use of quantum mechanical states for information processing, communications, and sensing-and the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology have dominated condensed matter physics and materials science research in the 21st century. Solid-state devices for QISE have, to this point, predominantly been designed with bulk materials as their constituents. This review considers how nanomaterials (i.e., materials with intrinsic quantum confinement) may offer inherent advantages over conventional materials for QISE. The materials challenges for specific types of qubits, along with how emerging nanomaterials may overcome these challenges, are identified. Challenges for and progress toward nanomaterials-based quantum devices are condidered. The overall aim of the review is to help close the gap between the nanotechnology and quantum information communities and inspire research that will lead to next-generation quantum devices for scalable and practical quantum applications.

Spatially Separated Superconductivity and Enhanced Charge-Density-Wave Ordering in an IrTe2 Nanoflake

The interplay among collective electronic states like superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) is of significance in transition metal dichalcogenides. To date, a consensus on the relationship between SC and CDW has not been established in IrTe₂. Here we use the Au-assisted exfoliation method to cleave IrTe₂ down to 10 nm. A striking feature is the concurrence of phase separation in a single piece of nanoflake, i.e., the superconducting (P3̅m1) and CDW (P3̅) phases. In the former area, the dimensional fluctuations suppress the CDW ordering and induce SC at 3.5 K. The CDW area at the phase boundary shows enhanced T_CDW at 605 K (T_CDW = 280 K in the bulk phase), which is accompanied by a unique wrinkle. Detailed analyses suggest that the strain-induced bond breaking of Te-Te dimers favors the CDW. Our works provide compelling evidence of competition between SC and CDW in IrTe₂.

Real-Space Observation of Emergent Complexity of Phase Evolution in Micrometer-Sized IrTe_{2} Crystals

We report complex behaviors in the phase evolution of transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe_{2} thin flakes, captured with real-space observations using scanning Raman microscopy. The phase transition progresses via growth of a small number of domains, which is unlikely in statistical models that assume a macroscopic number of nucleation events. Consequently, the degree of phase evolution in the thin flakes is quite variable for the selected specimen and for a repeated measurement sequence, representing the emergence of complexity in the phase evolution. In the ∼20-μm^{3}-volume specimen, the complex phase evolution results in the emergent coexistence of a superconducting phase that originally requires chemical doping to become thermodynamically stable. These findings indicate that the complexity involved in phase evolution considerably affects the physical properties of a small-sized specimen.

Quantifying the Charge Carrier Interaction in Metallic Twisted Bilayer Graphene Superlattices

The mechanism of charge carrier interaction in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) remains an unresolved problem, where some researchers proposed the dominance of the electron-phonon interaction, while the others showed evidence for electron-electron or electron-magnon interactions. Here we propose to resolve this problem by generalizing the Bloch-Grüneisen equation and using it for the analysis of the temperature dependent resistivity in TBG. It is a well-established theoretical result that the Bloch-Grüneisen equation power-law exponent, p, exhibits exact integer values for certain mechanisms. For instance, p = 5 implies the electron-phonon interaction, p = 3 is associated with the electron-magnon interaction and p = 2 applies to the electron-electron interaction. Here we interpret the linear temperature-dependent resistance, widely observed in TBG, as p→1, which implies the quasielastic charge interaction with acoustic phonons. Thus, we fitted TBG resistance curves to the Bloch-Grüneisen equation, where we propose that p is a free-fitting parameter. We found that TBGs have a smoothly varied p-value (ranging from 1.4 to 4.4) depending on the Moiré superlattice constant, λ, or the charge carrier concentration, n. This implies that different mechanisms of the charge carrier interaction in TBG superlattices smoothly transition from one mechanism to another depending on, at least, λ and n. The proposed generalized Bloch-Grüneisen equation is applicable to a wide range of disciplines, including superconductivity and geology.
