Spin-orbital coupling and slow phonon effects enabled persistent photoluminescence in organic crystal under isomer doping

Stepwise Charge/Energy Transfer in MR-TADF Molecule-Doped Exciplex for Ultralong Persistent Luminescence Activated with Visible Light

Organic long-persistent luminescence (OLPL), which relies on energy storage for delayed light emission by the charge separation state, has attracted intense attention in various optical applications. However, charge separation (CS) is efficient only under ultraviolet excitation in most OLPL systems because it requires a driving force from the large energy difference between the local excited (LE) and charge transfer (CT) states. In this study, a multiresonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecule is incorporated into an exciplex system to achieve efficient OLPL in a composite material activated by visible light via a stepwise charge/energy transfer process. The enhanced absorption of the composite material facilitated a tenfold increase in the duration of the OLPL, which can last for several hours under visible light excitation. The excited state of the MR-TADF molecule tends to charge transfer to the acceptor, followed by energy transfer to the exciplex, which benefits from the small difference between the LE and CT states owing to the inherent CS characteristics of the opposing resonance effect. Afterglow displays of these composite materials are fabricated to demonstrate their considerable potential in encryption patterns and emergency lights, which take advantage of their excellent processability, visible light activation, and tunable luminescence properties.

Sulphur-atom positional engineering in perylenimide: structure-property relationships and H-aggregation directed type-I photodynamic therapy

An innovative design strategy of placing sulfur (S)-atoms within the pendant functional groups and at carbonyl positions in conventional perylenimide (PNI-O) has been demonstrated to investigate the condensed state structure-property relationship and potential photodynamic therapy (PDT) application. Incorporation of simply S-atoms at the peri-functionalized perylenimide (RPNI-O) leads to an aggregation-induced enhanced emission luminogen (AIEEgen), 2-hexyl-8-(thianthren-1-yl)-1H-benzo[5,10]anthra[2,1,9-def]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (API), which achieves a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ PL) of 0.85 in aqueous environments and established novel AIE mechanisms. Additionally, substitution of the S-atom at the carbonyl position in RPNI-O leads to thioperylenimides (RPNI-S): 2-hexyl-8-phenyl-1H-benzo[5,10]anthra[2,1,9-def]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dithione (PPIS), 8-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)-2-hexyl-1H-benzo[5,10]anthra[2,1,9-def]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dithione (THPIS), and 2-hexyl-8-(thianthren-1-yl)-1H-benzo[5,10]anthra[2,1,9-def]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dithion (APIS), with distinct photophysical properties (enlarged spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Φ PL ≈ 0.00), and developed diverse potent photosensitizers (PSs). The present work provides a novel SOC enhancement mechanism via pronounced H-aggregation. Surprisingly, the lowest singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ Δ) and theoretical calculation suggest the specific type-I PDT for RPNI-S. Interestingly, RPNI-S efficiently produces superoxide (O2˙-) due to its remarkably lower Gibbs free energy (ΔG) values (THPIS: -40.83 kcal mol-1). The non-toxic and heavy-atom free very specific thio-based PPIS and THPIS PSs showed selective and efficient PDT under normoxia, as a rare example.

Color-Tunable Dual-Mode Organic Afterglow for White-Light Emission and Information Encryption Based on Carbazole Doping

Dual-mode emission materials, combining phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence, offer promising opportunities for white-light afterglow. However, the delayed fluorescence lifetime is usually significantly shorter than that of phosphorescence, limiting the duration of white-light emission. In this study, a carbazole-based host-guest system that can be activated by both ultraviolet (UV) and visible light is reported to achieve balanced phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence, resulting in a long-lived white-light afterglow. Our study demonstrated the critical role of a charge transfer state in the afterglow mechanism, where the charge separation and recombination process directly determined the lifetime of afterglow. Simultaneously, an efficient reversed intersystem crossing process was obtained between the singlet and triplet charge transfer states, which facilitating the delayed fluorescence properties of host-guest system. As a result, delayed fluorescence lifetime was successfully prolonged to approach that of phosphorescence. This work presents a delayed fluorescence lifetime improvement strategy via doping method to realize durable white-light afterglow.

Structurally Resemblant Dopants Enhance Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Doping has shown very promising potential in endowing room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties of organic phosphors with minimal effort. Here, a new isomer design and doping strategy is reported that is applicable to dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its derivatives. Three isomers are synthesized to study the dopant effect on enhancing RTP of DBT derivatives. It is found that isomer dopants bearing close resemblance to the host with matched highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels and small energy difference between singlet- and triplet-excited states can yield efficient RTP for the doped system. Meanwhile, phosphorescence color from yellow to red is achieved by varying isomer dopants used for doping the DBT derivatives. This work represents an RTP enhancement strategy based on isomer design and doping to construct luminescent organic phosphors.
