Abstract
Straightforward design and long-term functionality for tribological considerations has prompted an extensive substitution of polymers for metals across various applications, from industrial machinery to medical devices. Lubrication of and by polymer gels/coatings, essential for ensuring the cost-effective operation and reliability of applications, has gained strong momentum by benefiting from the structural characteristics of natural lubrication systems (such as articular cartilage). The optimal synthetic strategy for lubricating polymer gels/coatings would be a holistic approach, wherein the lubrication mechanism in relation to the structural properties offers a pathway to design tailor-made materials. This review considers recent synthesis strategies for creating lubricating polymer gels/coatings from the molecular level (including polymer brushes, loops, microgels, and hydrogels), and assessing their frictional properties, as well as considering the underlying mechanism of their lubrication.

Abstract
Natural cartilage exhibits superior lubricity as well as an ultra-long service lifetime, which is related to its surface hydration, load-bearing, and deformation recovery feature. Until now, it is of great challenge to develop reliable cartilage lubricating materials or coatings with persistent robustness. Inspired by the unique biochemical structure and mechanics of natural cartilage, the study reports a novel cartilage-hydrogel composed of top composite lubrication layer and bottom mechanical load-bearing layer, by covalently manufacturing thick polyelectrolyte brush phase through sub-surface of tough hydrogel matrix with multi-level crystallization phase. Due to multiple network dissipation mechanisms of matrix, this hydrogel can achieve a high compression modulus of 11.8 MPa, a reversible creep recovery (creep strain: ≈2%), along with excellent anti-swelling feature in physiological medium (v/v0 < 5%). Using low-viscosity PBS as lubricant, this hydrogel demonstrates persistent lubricity (average COF: ≈0.027) under a high contact pressure of 2.06 MPa with encountering 100k reciprocating sliding cycles, negligible wear and a deformation recovery of collapse pit in testing area. The extraordinary lubrication performance of this hydrogel is comparable to but beyond the natural animal cartilage, and can be used as compliant coating for implantable articular material of UHMWPE to present, offering more robust lubricity than current commercial system.

Abstract
Hydrogels are considered as a potential cartilage replacement material based on their structure being similar to natural cartilage, which are of great significance in repairing cartilage defects. However, it is difficult for the existing hydrogels to combine the high load bearing and low friction properties (37 °C) of cartilage through sample methods. Herein, we report a facile and new fabrication strategy to construct the PNIPAm/EYL hydrogel by using the macrophase separation of supersaturated N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) monomer solution to promote the formation of liposomes from egg yolk lecithin (EYL) and asymmetric template method. The PNIPAm/EYL hydrogels possess a relatively high compressive strength (more than 12 MPa), fracture energy (9820 J/m2), good fatigue resistance, lubricating properties, and excellent biocompatibility. Compared with the PNIPAm hydrogel, the friction coefficient (COF 0.046) of PNIPAm/EYL hydrogel is reduced by 50%. More importantly, the COF (0.056) of PNIPAm/EYL hydrogel above lower critical solution temperature (LCST) does not increase significantly, exhibiting heat-tolerant lubricity. The finite element analysis further proves that PNIPAm/EYL hydrogel can effectively disperse the applied stress and dissipate energy under load conditions. This work not only provides new insights for the design of high-strength lubricating hydrogels but also lays a foundation for the treatment of cartilage injury as a substitute material.

Abstract
Hydrogel-based wearable sensors eventually experience dehydration, which negatively impacts their function, leading to decreased sensitivity. Monitoring the real-time water retention rate and sensing performance of wearable flexible sensors without dismantling them remains a significant difficulty. In this study, a molecule having aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in an aqueous environment has been developed and produced, which can combine with anionic guar gum and acrylic acid to create an AIE hydrogel. Wearable sensing electronic devices have the capability to track motion signals at various joints of the human body. Additionally, they can effectively and visually monitor dehydration status during extended periods of operation. The fluorescence intensity of the hydrogel is primarily influenced by the level of aggregation of luminous monomers inside the network. This level of aggregation is predominantly governed by the hydrogel's water retention rate. Hence, the extended duration of hydrogel dehydration can be manifested through alterations in their fluorescence characteristics, which are employed for strain sensing. This approach enables users to assess the water retention of hydrogels with greater efficiency, eliminating the requirement for disassembling them from the completed electrical gadget. In summary, the use of AIE-based fluorescent hydrogels will advance the progress of intelligent wearable electronics.

Abstract
The patch with a superlubricated surface shows great potential for the prevention of postoperative adhesion during soft tissue repair. However, the existing patches suffer from the destruction of topography during superlubrication coating and lack of pro-healing capability. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and versatile strategy to develop a Janus nanofibrous patch (J-NFP) with antiadhesion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging functions. Specifically, sequential electrospinning is performed with initiators and CeO2 nanoparticles (CeNPs) embedded on the different sides, followed by subsurface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization for grafting zwitterionic polymer brushes, introducing superlubricated skin on the surface of single nanofibers. The poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) brush-grafted patch retains fibrous topography and shows a coefficient of friction of around 0.12, which is reduced by 77% compared with the pristine fibrous patch. Additionally, a significant reduction in protein, platelet, bacteria, and cell adhesion is observed. More importantly, the CeNPs-embedded patch enables ROS scavenging as well as inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and promotes anti-inflammatory cytokine levels. Furthermore, the J-NFP can inhibit tissue adhesion and promote repair of both rat skin wounds and intrauterine injuries. The present strategy for developing the Janus patch exhibits enormous prospects for facilitating soft tissue repair.

Abstract
Supermolecular hydrogel ionic skin (i-skin) linked with smartphones has attracted widespread attention in physiological activity detection due to its good stability in complex scenarios. However, the low ionic conductivity, inferior mechanical properties, poor contact adhesion, and insufficient freeze resistance of most used hydrogels limit their practical application in flexible electronics. Herein, a novel multifunctional poly(vinyl alcohol)-based conductive organohydrogel (PCEL5.0%) with a supermolecular structure was constructed by innovatively employing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) as reinforcement material, ethylene glycol as antifreeze, and lithium chloride as a water retaining agent. Thanks to the synergistic effect of these components, the PCEL5.0% organohydrogel shows excellent performance in terms of ionic conductivity (1.61 S m-1), mechanical properties (tensile strength of 70.38 kPa and elongation at break of 537.84%), interfacial adhesion (1.06 kPa to pig skin), frost resistance (-50.4 °C), water retention (67.1% at 22% relative humidity), and remoldability. The resultant PCEL5.0%-based i-skin delivers satisfactory sensitivity (GF = 1.38) with fast response (348 ms) and high precision under different deformations and low temperature (-25 °C). Significantly, the wireless sensor system based on the PCEL5.0% organohydrogel i-skin can transmit signals from physiological activities and sign language to a smartphone by Bluetooth technology and dynamically displays the status of these movements. The organohydrogel i-skin shows great potential in diverse fields of physiological activity detection, human-computer interaction, and rehabilitation medicine.

Abstract
Nature offers a wealth of opportunities to solve scientific and technological issues based on its unique structures and function. The dynamic non-covalent interaction is considered to be the main base of living functions of creatures including humans, animals, and plants. Supramolecular hydrogels formed by non-covalent bonding interactions has become a unique platform for constructing promising materials for medicine, energy, electronic, and biological substitute. In this review, the self-assemble principle of supramolecular hydrogels is summarized. Next, the stimulation of external environment that triggers the assembly or disassembly of supramolecular hydrogels are recapitulated, including temperature, mechanics, light, pH, ions, etc. The main applications of bioinspired supramolecular hydrogels in terms of bionic objects including humans, animals, and plants are also described. Although so many efforts are done for revealing the synergized mechanism of the function and non-covalent interactions on the supramolecular hydrogel, the complexity and variability between stimulus and non-covalent bonding in the supramolecular system still require impeccable theories. As an outlook, the bioinspired supramolecular hydrogel is just beginning to exhibit its great potential in human life, offering significant opportunities in drug delivery and screening, implantable devices and substitutions, tissue engineering, micro-fluidic devices, and biosensors.

Abstract
Organisms in nature have evolved a variety of surfaces with different tribological properties to adapt to the environment. By studying, understanding, and summarizing the friction and lubrication regulation phenomena of typical surfaces in nature, researchers have proposed various biomimetic friction regulation theories and methods to guide the development of new lubrication materials and lubrication systems. The design strategies for biomimetic friction/lubrication materials and systems mainly include the chemistry, surface structure, and mechanics. With the deepening understanding of the mechanism of biomimetic lubrication and the increasing application requirements, the design strategy of multi-strategy coupling has gradually become the center of attention for researchers. This paper focuses on the interfacial chemistry, surface structure, and surface mechanics of a single regulatory strategy and multi-strategy coupling approach. Based on the common biological friction regulation mechanism in nature, this paper reviews the research progress on biomimetic friction/lubrication materials in recent years, discusses and analyzes the single and coupled design strategies as well as their advantages and disadvantages, and describes the design concepts, working mechanisms, application prospects, and current problems of such materials. Finally, the development direction of biomimetic friction lubrication materials is prospected.

Abstract
Hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for anticounterfeiting materials, owing to their unique stimulus-responsive capabilities. To improve the security of encrypted information, efforts are devoted to constructing transient anticounterfeiting hydrogels with a dynamic information display. However, current studies to design such hydrogel materials inevitably include sophisticated chemistry, complex preparation processes, and particular experimental setups. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to realize the transient anticounterfeiting by constructing bivalent metal (M2+)-coordination complexes in poly(acrylic acid) gels, where the cloud temperature (Tc) of the gels can be feasibly tuned by M2+ concentration. Therefore, the multi-Tc parts in the gel can be locally programmed by leveraging the spatially selective diffusion of M2+ with different concentrations. With the increase of temperature or the addition of a complexing agent, the transparency of the multi-Tc parts in the gel spontaneously evolves in natural light, enabling the transient information anticounterfeiting process. This work has provided a new strategy and mechanism to fabricate advanced anticounterfeiting hydrogel materials.

Abstract
Currently, it remains challenging to balance intrinsic stiffness with programmability in most vitrimers. Simultaneously, coordinating materials with gel-like iontronic properties for intrinsic ion transmission while maintaining vitrimer programmable features remains underexplored. Here, we introduce a phase-engineering strategy to fabricate bicontinuous vitrimer heterogel (VHG) materials. Such VHGs exhibited high mechanical strength, with an elastic modulus of up to 116 MPa, a high strain performance exceeding 1000%, and a switchable stiffness ratio surpassing 5 × 103. Moreover, highly programmable reprocessing and shape memory morphing were realized owing to the ion liquid-enhanced VHG network reconfiguration. Derived from the ion transmission pathway in the ILgel, which responded to the wide-span switchable mechanics, the VHG iontronics had a unique bidirectional stiffness-gated piezoresistivity, coordinating both positive and negative piezoresistive properties. Our findings indicate that the VHG system can act as a foundational material in various promising applications, including smart sensors, soft machines, and bioelectronics.

Abstract
Low critical solution temperature (LCST) of commonly used thermoresponsive polymers in water is basically dominated by hydrophobic interactions. Herein, a novel thermoresponsive system based on electrostatic interactions is reported. By simply loading aluminum chloride (AlCl3 ) into non-responsive poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) hydrogels, PHEA-Al gels turn to have reversible thermoresponsive behavior between transparent and opaque without any volume change. Further investigations by changing metal ion-polymer compositions unravel the necessity of specific electrostatic interactions, namely, cation-dipole bonding interactions between hydroxy groups and trivalent metal ions. The thermoresponsive hydrogel demonstrates high transparency (≈95%), excellent luminous modulation capability (>98%), and cyclic reliability, suggesting great potential as an energy-saving material. Although LCST control by salt addition is widely known, salt-induced expression of thermoresponsiveness has barely been discussed before. This design provides a new approach of easy fabrication, low cost, and scalability to develop stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Hydrogel coatings have received great attention in the field of such as medical devices, water treatment membranes, flexible electronics, and marine antifouling. However, when it comes to lubrication of hydrogel materials, though it has great potential applications in the field of industrial and medical drag reduction, some restrained properties are urgently needed to overcome for releasing the practical potential. EXPERIMENTS Durability of high lubrication was revealed from the sliding test during the long-term storage, as well as the long-distance sliding. Some variables which possibly affect the lubrication performance were examined to demonstrate that excellent lubricity of the coating would not be easily influenced by load, frequency, friction pair and temperature. The microstructure and mechanical characterization of the lubricative coating indicate that the resistance to harsh running conditions is premised on enough hydration extent and robustness. The formulae of Possion ratio and ball-on-disk contact stress which apply to soft matter were used for calculating contact stress values in tribology tests. Anti-swelling and bio-compatibility are also verified. FINDINGS This work found a route of achieving superior lubrication and coexisting with stability in lubrication, which can be used for drag reduction in medical devices and shipbuilding industry.

Abstract
Most shape memory polymers apply glass transition or crystallization of domains to fix temporary shapes and shape recovery is induced by heating, which hinders their application under heat-intolerant conditions. Moreover, the permanent shapes of polymers normally cannot be altered arbitrarily after fabrication. Herein, we present a novel shape memory hydrogel with a remodelable permanent shape and programmable cold-induced shape recovery behavior. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel is prepared in the presence of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and subsequently treated with calcium acetate (Ca(Ac)2). The charge-assisted hydrogen bonding between PAA and DETA imparts the hydrogel with remodelability, while the heat-induced hydrophobic aggregation of polymer chains and acetate groups results in shape fixation by heating and shape recovery by cooling. Afterwards, programmable deformable devices are obtained by assembling hydrogel blocks with different concentrations of Ca(Ac)2. This design strategy promotes the development of shape memory polymers with diverse potential applications.

Abstract
Atmospheric water harvesting is an emerging strategy for decentralized and potable water supplies. However, water nucleation and microdroplet coalescence on condensing surfaces often result in surface flooding owing to the lack of a sufficient directional driving force for shedding. Herein, inspired by the fascinating properties of lizards and catfish, we present a condensing surface with engineered hydrogel patterns that enable rapid and sustainable water harvesting through the directional pumping and drag-reduced sliding of water droplets. The movement of microscale condensed droplets is synergistically driven by the surface energy gradient and difference in Laplace pressure induced by the arch hydrogel patterns. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic hydrogel surface can strongly bond inner-layer water molecules to form a lubricant film that reduces drag and facilitates the sliding of droplets off the condensing surface. Thus, this strategy is promising for various water purification techniques based on liquid-vapor phase-change processes.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common degenerative joint disorder, seriously affects patients' daily activities. Recently, hydrogels, due to their similar structure to articular cartilage, have shown great potential as cartilage-repairing materials. In the present work, we developed a simple process for fabricating terpolymer [P(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)/Fe3+] hydrogel [P(AAm-co-AAc-co-AMPS)/Fe3+]. The content of AMPS was found to show a crucial effect on the mechanical and tribological performance of the terpolymer hydrogel. When the content of AMPS was 0.45 mol L-1, the compressive strength, modulus, and friction coefficient of the terpolymer hydrogel were 66.60 ± 1.79 MPa, 2.10 ± 0.16 MPa, and 0.032, respectively. In addition, the hydrogel showed high wear durability and the friction coefficient was as low as 0.038 after 3.6 × 105 sliding cycles.

Abstract
Objective To prepare the hydrogel coating on the surfaces of nasogastric tubes and to evaluate its effect on the insertion of nasogastric tubes in a rabbit model. Methods The polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel coating was prepared by UV-induced free radical polymerization. The morphology of the PAAm coating and its interfacial bonding with the silicone rubber substrates of nasogastric tubes were observed with scanning electron microscope. The composition of the coating was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The water absorption power and stability of the coating were measured by the weighing method. Water contact angle meter was used to measure the wettability of the coating and tribometer was used to determine the friction coefficient of the silicone rubber substrates before and after the modification. The cytotoxicity of the coating on L929 murine fibroblast cell line was explored with CCK-8 assay after 24-h coculturing of the L929 cell line with silicone rubber substrates before and after modification. An animal model of nasogastric tube insertion in New Zealand rabbits was used to evaluate the effect of the lubrication coating by assessing the insertion time and nasal damage. Results In this study, PAAm hydrogel coating was prepared and constructed on the surface of silicone rubber nasogastric tubes. The coating, with a three-dimensional network structure, showed strong interfacial bonding with silicone rubber substrates. The appearance of amino and carbonyl groups indicated that the PAAm hydrogel coating was grafted on the surfaces of nasogastric tubes. Before the modification, the silicone rubber substrate essentially did not absorb much water, whereas, after the modification, the silicone rubber substrate showed significant improvement of as much as 2.9% in water absorption. After sonication for 90 min, the weight loss rate was only 0.15%. Compared with pristine nasogastric tubes, the water contact angle of the modified nasogastric tubes was reduced from 111.9°±2.2° to 58.9°±1.5° ( t=22.59, P<0.05). In addition, the friction coefficient of silicone rubber nasogastric tubes decreased by 69.3% from 0.378±0.05 to 0.116±0.004 ( t=42.80, P<0.05) after modification. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the cytocompatibility between L929 cells cocultured with pristine nasogastric tube and those cocultured with modified nasogastric tube. The animal experiment of nasogastric tube insertion showed that the insertion time of the modified nasogastric tubes was reduced from (41.6±7.8) s to (12.4±2.9) s ( t=8.509, P<0.05). Laryngoscopy revealed that the PAAm hydrogel coating significantly reduced the mucosal damage caused by the insertion of nasogastric tubes. Conclusion In this study, PAAm hydrogel coating with strong interfacial bonding was prepared on the surface of silicone rubber nasogastric tubes. The coating has excellent hydrophilic lubrication property and cytocompatibility, effectively shortens the insertion time, and reduces the damage caused by nasogastric tube insertion.

Abstract
Inspired by biological systems, trainable responsive materials have received burgeoning research interests for future adaptive and intelligent material systems. However, the trainable materials to date typically cannot perform active work, and the training allows only one direction of functionality change. Here, we demonstrate thermally trainable hydrogel systems consisting of two thermoresponsive polymers, where the volumetric response of the system upon phase transitions enhances or decreases through a training process above certain threshold temperature. Positive or negative training of the thermally induced deformations can be achieved, depending on the network design. Importantly, softening, stiffening, or toughening of the hydrogel can be achieved by the training process. We demonstrate trainable hydrogel actuators capable of performing increased active work or implementing an initially impossible task. The reported dual network hydrogels provide a new training strategy that can be leveraged for bio-inspired soft systems such as adaptive artificial muscles or soft robotics.

Abstract
On-skin hydrogel electrodes are poorly conformable in sweaty scenarios due to low electrode-skin adhesion resulting from the sweat film formed on the skin surface, which seriously hinders practical applications. In this study, we fabricated a tough adhesive cellulose-nanofibril/poly(acrylic acid) (CNF/PAA) hydrogel with tight hydrogen-bond (H-bond) networks based on a common monomer and a biomass resource. Furthermore, inherent H-bonded network structures can be disrupted through judicious engineering using excess hydronium ions produced through sweating, which facilitate the transition to protonation and modulate the release of active groups (i.e., hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) accompanied by a pH drop. The lower pH enhances adhesive performance, especially on skin, with a 9.7-fold higher interfacial toughness (453.47 vs. 46.74 J m-2), an 8.6-fold higher shear strength (600.14 vs. 69.71 kPa), and a 10.4-fold higher tensile strength (556.44 vs. 53.67 kPa) observed at pH 4.5 compared to the corresponding values at pH 7.5. Our prepared hydrogel electrode remains conformable on sweaty skin when assembled as a self-powered electronic skin (e-skin) and enables electrophysiological signals to be reliably collected with high signal-to-noise ratios when exercising. The strategy presented here promotes the design of high-performance adhesive hydrogels that may serve to record continuous electrophysiological signals under real-life conditions (beyond sweating) for various intelligent monitoring systems.

Abstract
The rapid progress of information technology is accompanied by plenty of information embezzlement and forgery, but developing advanced encryption technologies to ensure information security remains challenging. Phase separation commonly leads to a dramatic change in the transmittance of hydrophilic polymer networks, which is a potential method for information security but is often neglected. Here, taking the polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel system as a typical example, facilely adjustable information encryption and decryption via its regulable phase separation process in ethanol/water mixed solvent, are reported. By controlling the osmotic pressure of the external and internal environment, it is demonstrated that the diffusion coefficient during deswelling and reswelling, as well as the corresponding change of transmittance of the gel, can be well controlled. Relatively high osmotic pressure leads to rapid phase separation of the initial gel but slow phase remixing of the phase-separated gel, opening the opportunity of applying the gel as a reversible information encryption device. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, several stable and reversible information encryption and decryption systems by making use of the phase separation process of the gels are designed, which are expected to inspire the development of next-generation soft devices for information technology.

Abstract
In nature, many living organisms exhibiting unique structural coloration and soft-bodied actuation have inspired scientists to develop advanced structural colored soft actuators toward biomimetic soft robots. However, it is challenging to simultaneously biomimic the angle-independent structural color and shape-morphing capabilities found in the plum-throated cotinga flying bird. Herein, we report biomimetic MXene-based soft actuators with angle-independent structural color that are fabricated through controlled self-assembly of colloidal SiO2 nanoparticles onto highly aligned MXene films followed by vacuum-assisted infiltration of polyvinylidene fluoride into the interstices. The resulting soft actuators are found to exhibit brilliant, angle-independent structural color, as well as ultrafast actuation and recovery speeds (a maximum curvature of 0.52 mm-1 can be achieved within 1.16 s, and a recovery time of ~ 0.24 s) in response to acetone vapor. As proof-of-concept illustrations, structural colored soft actuators are applied to demonstrate a blue gripper-like bird's claw that can capture the target, artificial green tendrils that can twine around tree branches, and an artificial multicolored butterfly that can flutter its wings upon cyclic exposure to acetone vapor. The strategy is expected to offer new insights into the development of biomimetic multifunctional soft actuators for somatosensory soft robotics and next-generation intelligent machines.

Abstract
Natural articular cartilages exhibit extraordinary lubricating properties and excellent load-bearing capacity based on their penetrated surface lubricated biomacromolecules and gradient-oriented hierarchical structure. Hydrogels are considered as the most promising cartilage replacement materials due to their excellent flexibility, good biocompatibility, and low friction coefficient. However, the construction of high-strength, low-friction hydrogels to mimic cartilage is still a great challenge. Here, inspired by the structure and functions of natural articular cartilage, anisotropic hydrogels with horizontal and vertical orientation structure were constructed layer by layer and bonded with each other, successfully developing a bilayer oriented heterogeneous hydrogel with a high load-bearing capacity, low friction, and excellent fatigue resistance. The bilayer hydrogel exhibited a high compressive strength of 5.21 ± 0.45 MPa and a compressive modulus of 4.06 ± 0.31 MPa due to the enhancement mechanism of the anisotropic structure within the bottom anisotropic hydrogel. Moreover, based on the synergistic effect of the high load-bearing capacity of the bottom layer and the lubrication of the surface layer, the bilayer hydrogel possesses excellent biotribological properties in hard/soft (0.032) and soft/soft (0.028) contact, which is close to that of natural cartilage. It is worth noting that the bilayer oriented heterogeneous hydrogel is able to withstand repeated loading without fatigue crack. Therefore, this work could open up a new avenue for constructing cartilage-like materials with both high strength and low friction.

Abstract
In this work, a design concept of bioinspired functional surfaces is proposed for lubricant control at surfaces and interfaces subjected to external thermal gradients. Inspired by the conical structures of cactus and the motion configuration of Centipedes, a bioinspired surface of wedged-groove with an oriented capillary pattern is constructed. The effect of geometrical parameters on the directional lubricant manipulation capacity and sliding anisotropy is discussed. It is found that by regulating the orientation of the capillary pattern, a controllable lubricant self-transport capacity can be achieved for varying conditions from surfaces to interfaces, with or without thermal gradients. The lubricant self-transport process is captured, and the mechanism is revealed. The design philosophy of the proposed bioinspired functional surface is believed to have potential applications for lubricant control in modern machinery and complex liquid control in lab-on-a-chip and microfluidics devices.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive hydrogel is regarded as one of the most promising smart soft materials for the next-generation advanced technologies and intelligence robots, but the limited variety of stimulus has become a non-negligible issue restricting its further development. Herein, we develop a new stimulus of "touch" (i.e., spatial contact with foreign object) for smart materials and propose a flytrap-inspired touch-responsive polymeric hydrogel based on supersaturated salt solution, exhibiting multiple responsive behaviors in crystallization, heat releasing, and electric signal under touch stimulation. Furthermore, utilizing flytrap-like cascade response strategy, a soft actuator with touch-responsive actuation is fabricated by employing the touch-responsive hydrogel and the thermo-responsive hydrogel. This investigation provides a facile and versatile strategy to design touch-responsive smart materials, enabling a profound potential application in intelligence areas.

Abstract
Surfaces are vibrant sites for various activities with environments, especially as the transfer station for mass and energy exchange. In nature, natural creatures exhibit special wetting and interfacial properties such as water repellency and water affinity to adapt to various environmental challenges by taking advantage of air or liquid infusion media. Inspired by natural surfaces, various engineered liquid-repellent surfaces have been developed with a wide range of applications in both open and closed underwater environments. In particular, underwater conditions are characterized by high viscosity, high pressure, and complex compositions, which pose more challenges for the design of robust and functional repellent surfaces. In this Perspective, we take a parallel approach to introduce two classical liquid-repellent surfaces: an air-infused repellent surface and a lubricated liquid-repellent surface. Then we highlight fundamental challenges and design configurations of robust liquid-repellent surfaces both in air and underwater. We summarize the advantages and drawbacks of two kinds of repellent surfaces and list several applications of liquid-repellent surfaces for use in the ocean, medical care, and energy harvesting. Finally, we provide an outlook of research directions for robust liquid-repellent surfaces.

Abstract
Bacterial infections from biomedical devices pose a great threat to the health of humans and thus place a heavy burden on society. Therefore, developing efficient antibacterial surfaces has attracted much attention. However, it is a challenge to identify or develop a combination that efficiently integrates multiple functions via topological tailoring and on-demand function-switch via non-contact and noninvasive stimuli. To resolve this issue, a highly hydrophilic comb polymer brush was constructed here based on supramolecular host-guest recognition. Azobenzene (azo)-modified antifouling and antibacterial polymers were incorporated into cyclodextrin (CD)-modified antifouling polymer brushes grafted on the surface. The surface thus obtained possessed excellent antifouling performance with a low bacterial density of ∼6.25 × 105 cells per cm2 after 48 h and exhibited a high efficiency of ∼88.2% for killing bacteria. Besides, irradiation with UV light resulted in the desorption of the azo-polymers and a release of ∼85.1% attached bacteria. Irradiating visible light led to the re-adsorption of azo-polymers, which regenerated the fresh surface; the process could be repeated for at least three cycles, and the surface still maintained low bacterial attachments with a cell density of ∼7.10 × 105 cells per cm2, high sterilization efficiency of ∼93.8%, and a bacteria release rate of ∼83.1% in the 3rd cycle. The photo-switchable antibacterial surface presented in this research will provide new insights into the development of smart biomedical surfaces.

Abstract
Natural articular cartilages show extraordinary tribological performance based on their penetrated surface lubricated biomacromolecules and good mechanical tolerance. Hydrogels are considered to be potential alternatives to cartilages due to their low surface friction and good biocompatibility, although the poor mechanical properties limited their applications. Inspired by the excellent mechanical properties and the remarkable surface lubrication mechanism of natural articular cartilages, one kind of cartilage-like composite material with a lubrication phase (Composite-LP) was developed by chemically grafting a thick hydrophilic polyelectrolyte brush layer onto the subsurface of a three-dimensional manufactured elastomer scaffold-hydrogel composite architecture. The Composite-LP exhibited good load-bearing capacities because of the nondissipation strategy and the stress dispersion mechanism resulting from the elastomer scaffold enhancement. In the presence of the top lubrication layer, the Composite-LP showed superior friction reduction functionality and wear resistance under a dynamic shearing process. This design concept of coupling the non-dissipative mechanism and interface lubrication provides a new avenue for developing cartilage-like hydrogels and soft robots.
