Enhanced oxygen evolution over dual corner-shared cobalt tetrahedra

Mott-Schottky Construction Boosted Plasmon Thermal and Electronic Effects on the Ag/CoV-LDH Nanohybrids for Highly-Efficient Water Oxidation

Mott-Schottky construction and plasmon excitation represent two highly-efficient and closely-linked coping strategies to the high energy loss of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the combined effect has rarely been investigated. Herein, with Ag nanoparticles as electronic structure regulator and plasmon exciter, Ag/CoV-LDH@G nanohybrids (NHs) with Mott-Schottky heterojunction and notable plasmon effect are well-designed. Combining theoretical calculations with experiments, it is found that the Mott-Schottky construction modulates the Fermi level/energy band structure of CoV-LDH, which in turn leads to lowered d-band center (from -0.89 to -0.93), OER energy barrier (from 6.78 to 1.31 eV), and preeminent plasmon thermal/electronic effects. The thermal effect can offset the endothermic enthalpy change of OER, promote the deprotonation of *OOH, and accelerate electron transfer kinetics. Whereas the electronic effect can increase the density of charge carriers (from 0.70 × 1020 to 1.64 × 1020 cm-3), lower the activation energy of OER (from 30.3 to 17.7 kJ mol-1). Benefiting from these favorable factors, the Ag/CoV-LDH@G NHs show remarkable electrocatalytic performances, with an overpotential of 178 and 263 mV to afford 10 and 100 mA cm-2 for OER, respectively, and a low cell voltage of 1.42 V to drive 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting under near-infrared light irradiation.

BaCoO2 with Tetrahedral Cobalt Coordination: The Missing Element to Understand Energy Storage and Conversion Applications in BaCoO3-δ-Based Materials

Barium-cobaltate-based perovskite (BaCoO3-δ) and barium-cobaltate-based nanocomposites have been intensively studied in energy storage and conversion devices mainly due to flexible oxygen stoichiometry and tunable nonprecious transition metal oxidation states. Although a rich and complex family of structural polymorphs has already been reported for these perovskites in the literature, the potential structural evolution that may occur during the oxygen reduction reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction has not been investigated so far. In this study, we synthesized and characterized the lowest Co-oxidation state possible in the compound, BaCoO2, which exhibits a quartz-derived, trigonal structure with a helicoidally corner-sharing, CoO4-tetrahedral-framework as already proposed by Spitsbergen et al. Oxygen can reversibly be inserted in such a crystal structure to form BaCoO3-δ, i.e., with 0 ≤ δ ≤ 1, based on the results of an in situ coupled thermogravimetric - neutron diffraction study and which presents therefore giant oxygen capacity storage due to the extreme tunability of the electronic configuration of the cobalt cations which defines the fundamental origins of the materials performance. The reversible conversion of BaCoO2 to BaCoO3-δ associated with a similar electronic conductivity above 900 K permits to clarify the high potential of BaCoO3-δ-based energy storage and conversion devices.

Promoting Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis by Coordination Engineering in Cobalt Phosphate

Understanding the structure-activity correlation is an important prerequisite for the rational design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts at the atomic level. However, the effect of coordination environment on electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains enigmatic. In this work, the regulation of proton transfer involved in water oxidation by coordination engineering based on Co3(PO4)2 and CoHPO4 is reported. The HPO4 2- anion has intermediate pKa value between Co(II)-H2O and Co(III)-H2O to be served as an appealing proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) induction group. From theoretical calculations, the pH-dependent OER properties, deuterium kinetic isotope effects, operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Raman studies, the CoHPO4 catalyst beneficially reduces the energy barrier of proton hopping and modulates the formation energy of high-valent Co species, thereby enhancing OER activity. This work demonstrates a promising strategy that involves tuning the local coordination environment to optimize PCET steps and electrocatalytic activities for electrochemical applications. In addition, the designed system offers a motif to understand the structure-efficiency relationship from those amino-acid residue with proton buffer ability in natural photosynthesis.

Spatially and Temporally Resolved Dynamic Response of Co-Based Composite Interface during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Interfacial interaction dictates the overall catalytic performance and catalytic behavior rules of the composite catalyst. However, understanding of interfacial active sites at the microscopic scale is still limited. Importantly, identifying the dynamic action mechanism of the "real" active site at the interface necessitates nanoscale, high spatial-time-resolved complementary-operando techniques. In this work, a Co3O4 homojunction with a well-defined interface effect is developed as a model system to explore the spatial-correlation dynamic response of the interface toward oxygen evolution reaction. Quasi in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy-loss spectroscopy with high spatial resolution visually confirms the size characteristics of the interface effect in the spatial dimension, showing that the activation of active sites originates from strong interfacial electron interactions at a scale of 3 nm. Multiple time-resolved operando spectroscopy techniques explicitly capture dynamic changes in the adsorption behavior for key reaction intermediates. Combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the dynamic adjustment of multiple adsorption configurations of intermediates by highly activated active sites at the interface facilitates the O-O coupling and *OOH deprotonation processes. The dual dynamic regulation mechanism accelerates the kinetics of oxygen evolution and serves as a pivotal factor in promoting the oxygen evolution activity of the composite structure. The resulting composite catalyst (Co-B@Co3O4/Co3O4 NSs) exhibits an approximately 70-fold turnover frequency and 20-fold mass activity than the monomer structure (Co3O4 NSs) and leads to significant activity (η10 ∼257 mV). The visual complementary analysis of multimodal operando/in situ techniques provides us with a powerful platform to advance our fundamental understanding of interfacial structure-activity relationships in composite structured catalysts.

Electrocatalytic water oxidation with manganese phosphates

As inspired by the Mn4CaO5 oxygen evolution center in nature, Mn-based electrocatalysts have received overwhelming attention for water oxidation. However, the understanding of the detailed reaction mechanism has been a long-standing problem. Herein, homologous KMnPO4 and KMnPO4•H2O with 4-coordinated and 6-coordinated Mn centers, respectively, are prepared. The two catalysts constitute an ideal platform to study the structure-performance correlation. The presence of Mn(III), Mn(IV), and Mn(V) intermediate species are identified during water oxidation. The Mn(V)=O species is demonstrated to be the substance for O-O bond formation. In KMnPO4•H2O, the Mn coordination structure did not change significantly during water oxidation. In KMnPO4, the Mn coordination structure changed from 4-coordinated [MnO4] to 5-coordinated [MnO5] motif, which displays a triangular biconical configuration. The structure flexibility of [MnO5] is thermodynamically favored in retaining Mn(III)-OH and generating Mn(V)=O. The Mn(V)=O species is at equilibrium with Mn(IV)=O, the concentration of which determines the intrinsic activity of water oxidation. This study provides a clear picture of water oxidation mechanism on Mn-based systems.

Spatiotemporally and Chemically Resolved Imaging of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution on Single Nanoplates of Cobalt-Layered Hydroxide

Transition metal-layered hydroxides have been extensively studied in order to address the key challenge of slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, how the catalytically active sites are evolved and the corresponding heterogeneous structure-property relationship remain unclear. Herein, using cobalt-layered hydroxide as a representative catalyst, we report a strategy for the comprehensive in situ investigation of the electrocatalytic OER process at the single electrocatalyst level using combined electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and vis-absorption microscopy. The stepwise heterogeneous electrocatalytic responses of single-cobalt hydroxide nanoplates are unveiled with ECL imaging, and the corresponding valence state changes are revealed by vis-absorption imaging. The correlated in situ and ex situ multimode analyses indicate that, during the oxidation process, the Co2+ cations in the tetrahedral sites (CoTd2+) turned into CoTd3+ and even the highly unstable CoTd4+, assisted by the interlayer water in a metastable CoOOH·xH2O phase. Crucially, the CoTd4+ sites are mainly distributed in the inner part of the nanoplates and show superior electrocatalytic properties. The correlative single-particle imaging approach for electrocatalytic process analysis with high spatiotemporal and chemical resolution enables in-depth mechanistic insights to be generated and, in turn, will benefit the rational design of electrocatalysts with enhanced performance.

Recent advances of bifunctional catalysts for zinc air batteries with stability considerations: from selecting materials to reconstruction

With the growing depletion of traditional fossil energy resources and ongoing enhanced awareness of environmental protection, research on electrochemical energy storage techniques like zinc-air batteries is receiving close attention. A significant amount of work on bifunctional catalysts is devoted to improving OER and ORR reaction performance to pave the way for the commercialization of new batteries. Although most traditional energy storage systems perform very well, their durability in practical applications is receiving less attention, with issues such as carbon corrosion, reconstruction during the OER process, and degradation, which can seriously impact long-term use. To be able to design bifunctional materials in a bottom-up approach, a summary of different kinds of carbon materials and transition metal-based materials will be of assistance in selecting a suitable and highly active catalyst from the extensive existing non-precious materials database. Also, the modulation of current carbon materials, aimed at increasing defects and vacancies in carbon and electron distribution in metal-N-C is introduced to attain improved ORR performance of porous materials with fast mass and air transfer. Finally, the reconstruction of catalysts is introduced. The review concludes with comprehensive recommendations for obtaining high-performance and highly-durable catalysts.

Designing Oxide Catalysts for Oxygen Electrocatalysis: Insights from Mechanism to Application

The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are fundamental processes in a range of energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. ORR and OER both have significant activation barriers, which severely limit the overall performance of energy conversion devices that utilize ORR/OER. Meanwhile, ORR is another very important electrochemical reaction involving oxygen that has been widely investigated. ORR occurs in aqueous solutions via two pathways: the direct 4-electron reduction or 2-electron reduction pathways from O2 to water (H2O) or from O2 to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Noble metal electrocatalysts are often used to catalyze OER and ORR, despite the fact that noble metal electrocatalysts have certain intrinsic limitations, such as low storage. Thus, it is urgent to develop more active and stable low-cost electrocatalysts, especially for severe environments (e.g., acidic media). Theoretically, an ideal oxygen electrocatalyst should provide adequate binding to oxygen species. Transition metals not belonging to the platinum group metal-based oxides are a low-cost substance that could give a d orbital for oxygen species binding. As a result, transition metal oxides are regarded as a substitute for typical precious metal oxygen electrocatalysts. However, the development of oxide catalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions still faces significant challenges, e.g., catalytic activity, stability, cost, and reaction mechanism. We discuss the fundamental principles underlying the design of oxide catalysts, including the influence of crystal structure, and electronic structure on their performance. We also discuss the challenges associated with developing oxide catalysts and the potential strategies to overcome these challenges.

Manipulating electron redistribution induced by asymmetric coordination for electrocatalytic water oxidation at a high current density

Electronic structure manipulation with regard to active site coordination is an effective strategy to improve the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Herein, we present the structure-activity relationship between oxygen-atom-mediated electron rearrangement and active site coordination asymmetry. Ni²⁺ ions are introduced to FeWO₄ on Ni foam (NF) via self-substitution to break the symmetry of the FeO₆ octahedron and regulate d-electron structure of Fe sites. Structural regulation optimizes the adsorption energy of hydroxyl on the Fe sites and promotes the partial formation of hydroxyl oxide with high OER activity on the tungstate surface. Fe_0.53Ni_0.47WO₄/NF with the asymmetric FeO₆ octahedron of Fe sites can achieve an ultralow overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and 240 mV at 1000 mA cm^-2 with robust stability for 500 h at high current density under alkaline conditions. This research develops novel electrocatalysts with impressive OER performance and provides new insights into the design of highly active catalytic systems.

Evolution of Carbonate-Intercalated γ-NiOOH from a Molecularly Derived Nickel Sulfide (Pre)Catalyst for Efficient Water and Selective Organic Oxidation

The development of a competent (pre)catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to produce green hydrogen is critical for a carbon-neutral economy. In this aspect, the low-temperature, single-source precursor (SSP) method allows the formation of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts, with better control over their structural and electronic properties. Herein, a transition metal (TM) based chalcogenide material, nickel sulfide (NiS), is prepared from a novel molecular complex [Ni^II (PyHS)₄ ][OTf]₂ (1) and utilized as a (pre)catalyst for OER. The NiS (pre)catalyst requires an overpotential of only 255 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and shows 63 h of chronopotentiometry (CP) stability along with over 95% Faradaic efficiency in 1 m KOH. Several ex situ measurements and quasi in situ Raman spectroscopy uncover that NiS irreversibly transformed to a carbonate-intercalated γ-NiOOH phase under the alkaline OER conditions, which serves as the actual active structure for the OER. Additionally, this in situ formed active phase successfully catalyzes the selective oxidation of alcohol, aldehyde, and amine-based organic substrates to value-added chemicals, with high efficiencies.

Improving the Oxygen Evolution Activity of Layered Double-Hydroxide via Erbium-Induced Electronic Engineering

Layered double-hydroxide (LDH) has been considered an important class of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the adsorption-desorption behaviors of oxygen intermediates on its surface still remain unsatisfactory. Apart from transition-metal doping to solve this electrocatalytic problem of LDH, rare-earth (RE) species have sprung up as emerging dopants owing to their unique 4f valence-electronic configurations. Herein, the Er is chosen as a RE model to improve OER activity of LDH via constructing nickel foam supported Er-doped NiFe-LDH catalyst (Er-NiFe-LDH@NF). The optimal Er-NiFe-LDH@NF exhibits a low overpotential (191 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 ), high turnover frequency (0.588 s^-1 ), and low activation energy (36.03 kJ mol^-1 ), which are superior to Er-free sample. Electrochemical in situ Raman spectra reveal the facilitated transition of Ni-OH into Ni-OOH for promoted OER kinetics through the Er doping effect. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of Er facilitates the spin crossover of valence electrons by optimizing the d band center of NiFe-LDH, which leads to the G_O -G_HO closer to the optimal activity of the kinetic OER volcano by balancing the bonding strength of *O and *OH. Moreover, the Er-NiFe-LDH@NF presents high practicability in electrochemical water-splitting devices with a low driving potential of and a well-extended driving period.
