Enhanced chiroptic properties of nanocomposites of achiral plasmonic nanoparticles decorated with chiral dye-loaded micelles

Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence From 0D Quantum Dots by 2D Chiral Nanosheets

Materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit great application potential in biological scenes such as cell imaging, optical probes, etc. However, most developed materials are non-aqueous and toxic, which seriously restricts their compatibility with the life systems. Thus, it is necessary to explore a water-based CPL system with high biocompatibility so that to promote the biologic application process. Herein, a facile and efficient route to achieve the CPL properties of a functional aqueous solution is demonstrated by the combination of 0D quantum dots (QDs) and 2D chiral nanosheets. Benefited by the specific absorption ability of nanosheets for left/right-handed CPL, the QDs adsorbed onto the surface of nanosheets through hydrogen bond interactions showed apparent CPL features. In addition, this system has a good extensibility as the CPL property can be effectively regulated by changing the kind of emissive QDs. More importantly, this water-based nano-composite with facile fabrication process (one-step mixing) is suitable for the real applications, which is undoubtedly beneficial for the further progress of functional CPL materials.

Chiral Perovskite Heterostructure Films of CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots and 2D Chiral Perovskite with Circularly Polarized Luminescence Performance and Energy Transfer

This work reports the synthesis of chiral perovskite heterostructure films by combining a two-dimensional (2D) chiral (R-/S-MBA)2PbI4 perovskite with CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs). The as-synthesized chiral heterostructure films exhibit obvious circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, even though pure 2D chiral perovskite cannot present photoluminescence. It indicates that the chirality of the excited state of the QDs originates from the 2D chiral perovskite. The circular polarization-resolved transient absorption (TA) spectra further demonstrate that the CPL response of heterostructure films originates from the energy transfer between the chiral perovskite layer and QDs layer and the suppression of spin relaxation, which induces the imbalance of the spin population of excited states in QDs layer. In addition, the photoluminescence (PL), circular dichroism (CD), and CPL spectra of these heterostructure films can be controlled by varying the thickness and component of the chiral perovskite layer, which demonstrates that the anion exchange between chiral perovskite and CsPbBr3 QDs can tune the chemical composition and optoelectronic properties due to the low bonding energy difference between them and decrease the strain within the QDs layer to reduce the radiative recombination lifetime. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of chiral perovskites with a strong CPL response and further provides insight into the origination of CPL.

The promise of chiral electrocatalysis for efficient and sustainable energy conversion and storage: a comprehensive review of the CISS effect and future directions

The integration of chirality, specifically through the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, into electrocatalytic processes represents a pioneering approach for enhancing the efficiency of energy conversion and storage systems. This review delves into the burgeoning field of chiral electrocatalysis, elucidating the fundamental principles, historical development, theoretical underpinnings, and practical applications of the CISS effect across a spectrum of electrocatalytic reactions, including the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We explore the methodological advancements in inducing the CISS effect through structural and surface engineering and discuss various techniques for its measurement, from magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy (mc-AFM) to hydrogen peroxide titration. Furthermore, this review highlights the transformative potential of the CISS effect in addressing the key challenges of the NRR and CO2RR processes and in mitigating singlet oxygen formation in metal-air batteries, thereby improving their performance and durability. Through this comprehensive overview, we aim to underscore the significant role of incorporating chirality and spin polarization in advancing electrocatalytic technologies for sustainable energy applications.

Photon Upconversion Cooperates with Downshifting in Chiral Systems: Modulation, Amplification, and Applications of Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials are increasingly recognized for their potential applications such as 3D imaging, data storage, and optoelectronic devices. Typically, CPL materials have required high-energy (HE) photons for excitation to emit low-energy (LE) circularly polarized light, a process known as downshifting CPL (DSCPL). However, the emergence of upconverted CPL (UCCPL), where the absorption of multi LE photons results in the emission of a single HE photon with circular polarization, has recently attracted considerable attention. This minireview highlights the intricate relationship between upconversion and CPL phenomena. During upconversion, the dissymmetry factor (glum) value can be improved in certain systems. Additionally, the integration of both LE and HE photons in upconversion-downshifting-synergistic systems offers avenues for dual-excitation or dual-emission CPL functionalities. More in detail, the emerging UCCPL based on various photon upconversion mechanisms and their synergy with DSCPL are introduced. Additionally, several examples that demonstrate the applications of UCCPL are presented to highlight the future opportunities.

BODIPY directed one-dimensional self-assembly of gold nanorods

The assembly of anisotropic nanomaterials into ordered structures is challenging. Nevertheless, such self-assembled systems are known to have novel physicochemical properties and the presence of a chromophore within the nanoparticle ensemble can enhance the optical properties through plasmon-molecule electronic coupling. Here, we report the end-to-end assembly of gold nanorods into micrometer-long chains using a linear diamino BODIPY derivative. The preferential binding affinity of the amino group and the steric bulkiness of BODIPY directed the longitudinal assembly of gold nanorods. As a result of the linear assembly, the BODIPY chromophores positioned themselves in the plasmonic hotspots, which resulted in efficient plasmon-molecule coupling, thereby imparting photothermal properties to the assembled nanorods. This work thus demonstrates a new approach for the linear assembly of gold nanorods resulting in a plasmon-molecule coupled system, and the synergy between self-assembly and electronic coupling resulted in an efficient system having potential biomedical applications.

Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Luminescent Physical Unclonable Functions

Distinguished from traditional physical unclonable functions (PUFs), optical PUFs derive their encoded information from the optical properties of materials, offering distinct advantages, including solution processability, material versatility, and tunable luminescence performance. However, existing research on optical PUFs has predominantly centered on visible photoluminescence, while advanced optical PUFs based on higher-level covert light remain unexplored. In this study, we present optical PUFs based on the utilization of the covert light of near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence (NIR-CPL). This interesting property is achieved by incorporating Yb-doped metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (Yb-PeNCs) possessing NIR emission property into chiral imprinted photonic (CIP) films. By employing a solvent immersion method, we successfully integrated Yb-PeNCs into these CIP films, thereby creating an optically unclonable surface. The resulting NIR-CPL emission adds a layer of advanced security to the optical PUF systems. These findings underscore the potential of solution-processable chiral films to play a pivotal role in advancing the next generation of PUFs.

Achieving long-lived white circularly polarized luminescence from carbonized polymer dots via phosphorescence resonance energy transfer

Achieving white-light emission, especially long-lived white circularly polarized luminescence, is challenging. Herein, chiral phosphorescent carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have been prepared by using chiral polymer sodium alginate and chiral small molecule L-lysine as precursors. Benefiting from the efficient triplet-to-singlet phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET), CPD-based long-lived warm white CPL has been achieved for the first time. This study provides a universal strategy for the convenient and efficient preparation of CPD-based long-lived white CPL materials.

Engineering copper plasmonic chirality via ligand-induced dissolution for enantioselective recognition of amino acids

The formation of chiral nanosystems and their subsequent enantioselective interaction with chiral amino acids are vital steps in many biological processes. Due to their potential to mimic biological systems, the synthesis of chiral nanomaterials has garnered significant attention over the years. Despite the emergence of diverse nanomaterials showcasing strong chiral responses, the in-depth understanding of the mechanism of plasmonic chirality in copper nanoparticles and their subsequent application in various fields are least explored. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach for the synthesis of chiral copper nanoparticles using cysteine as a chiral precursor and capping ligand. Ligand-mediated chiral induction, established through experimental findings and a theoretical model, is ascribed as the major contributor to the origin of plasmonic chirality. The enantioselective recognition of chiral copper nanoparticles towards histidine, an amino acid with vast biological functions, was meticulously investigated by leveraging the strong copper-histidine binding ability. Ligand-induced dissolution, a unique phenomenon in nanoparticle reactions, was identified as the underlying mechanism for the nanoparticle-to-complex conversion. Understanding the mechanism of chiral induction in copper nanoparticles coupled with their enantioselective recognition of biomolecules not only holds promise in biomedical research but also sheds light on their potential as catalysts for asymmetric synthesis.

Biobased and biodegradable films exhibiting circularly polarized room temperature phosphorescence

There is interest in developing sustainable materials displaying circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence, which have been scarcely reported. Here, we introduce biobased thin films exhibiting circularly polarized luminescence with simultaneous room-temperature phosphorescence. For this purpose, phosphorescence-active lignosulfonate biomolecules are co-assembled with cellulose nanocrystals in a chiral construct. The lignosulfonate is shown to capture the chirality generated by cellulose nanocrystals within the films, emitting circularly polarized phosphorescence with a 0.21 dissymmetry factor and 103 ms phosphorescence lifetime. By contrast with most organic phosphorescence materials, this chiral-phosphorescent system possesses phosphorescence stability, with no significant recession under extreme chemical environments. Meanwhile, the luminescent films resist water and humid environments but are fully biodegradable (16 days) in soil conditions. The introduced bio-based, environmentally-friendly circularly polarized phosphorescence system is expected to open many opportunities, as demonstrated here for information processing and anti-counterfeiting.

Structurally Diverse Pyrene-decorated Planar Chiral [2,2]Paracyclophanes with Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence between Monomer and Excimer

We reported the synthesis of a series of structurally diverse CPL-active molecules, in which pyrene units were installed to chiral pm/po-[2,2]PCP scaffolds either with or without a triple bond spacer for pm/po-PCP-P1 and pm/po-PCP-P2, respectively. The X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed that these pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives exhibited diverse structures and crystal packings in the solid phases. The pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives exhibit various (chir)optical properties in organic solutions, depending on their respective structures. In a mixture of dioxane and water, pm/po-PCP-P1 emit green excimer fluorescence, whereas pm/po-PCP-P2 emit blue one. The chiroptical investigation demonstrated that Rp-pm-PCP-P1 and Rp-pm-PCP-P2 exhibited completely opposite CD and CPL signals even they possess the same chiral Rp-[2,2]PCP core. The same argument also holds for other chiral pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives. The theoretical calculation revealed that these unusual phenomena were attributed to different orientation between transition electric dipole moments and the magnetic dipole moments originating from the presence or absence of a triple bond spacer. These pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives display various colours and fluorescence emissions in the solid state and PMMA films, possibly due to the different packings as observed in the crystal structure. Moreover, these compounds also can interact with perylene diimide through π-π interactions, leading to near-white fluorescence.

Single-Particle Spectroelectrochemistry: Promoting the Electrocatalytic Activity of Gold Nanorods via Oxygen Plasma Treatment without Structural Deformation

Understanding of the electrocatalytic activity enhancement in gold nanoparticles is still limited. Herein, we present the effect of the oxygen plasma treatment on the electrochemical activity of gold nanorods (AuNRs). Oxygen plasma treatment resulted in the blueshift and line width narrowing of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectra obtained from individual AuNRs immobilized on an indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. These changes can be attributed to increases in the surface charges of the AuNRs. The formation of a Au-ITO heterojunction provided structural stability to the immobilized AuNRs regardless of the duration of oxygen plasma exposure. The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was induced by increases in the free-electron densities on the surfaces of these AuNRs owing to oxygen plasma treatment, and Au did not dissolve under the experimental conditions. However, the potential-dependent LSPR spectra of the individual AuNRs showed similar patterns of LSPR behavior, irrespective of the duration of oxygen plasma treatment and the concentration of H2O2. Therefore, this study based on single-particle spectroelectrochemistry and cyclic voltammetry improves the understanding of the role of oxygen plasma treatment in promoting the catalytic activity of structurally stable AuNRs immobilized on an ITO surface.

Chiral Plasmonic Hybrid Nanostructures: A Gateway to Advanced Chiroptical Materials

Chirality introduces a new dimension of functionality to materials, unlocking new possibilities across various fields. When integrated with plasmonic hybrid nanostructures, this attribute synergizes with plasmonic and other functionalities, resulting in unprecedented chiroptical materials that push the boundaries of the system's capabilities. Recent advancements have illuminated the remarkable chiral light-matter interactions within chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, allowing for the harnessing of their tunable optical activity and hybrid components. These advancements have led to applications in areas such as chiral sensing, catalysis, and spin optics. Despite these promising developments, there remains a need for a comprehensive synthesis of the current state-of-the-art knowledge, as well as a thorough understanding of the construction techniques and practical applications in this field. This review begins with an exploration of the origins of plasmonic chirality and an overview of the latest advancements in the synthesis of chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. Furthermore, representative emerging categories of hybrid nanomaterials are classified and summarized, elucidating their versatile applications. Finally, the review engages with the fundamental challenges associated with chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures and offer insights into the future prospects of this advanced field.

Recyclable soft photonic crystal film with overall improved circularly polarized luminescence

Existing circularly polarized luminescence materials can hardly satisfy the requirements of both large luminescence dissymmetry factor and high luminescent quantum yield, which hinders their practical applications. Here, we present a soft photonic crystal film embedded with chiral nanopores that possesses excellent circularly polarized luminescence performance with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor as well as a large luminescent quantum yield when loaded with various luminescent dyes. Benefitting from the retention of chiral nanopores imprinted from a chiral liquid crystal arrangement, the chiral soft photonic crystal film can not only endow dyes with chiral properties, but also effectively avoid severe aggregation of guest dye molecules. More importantly, the soft photonic crystal film can be recycled many times by loading and eluting guest dye molecules while retaining good stability as well as circularly polarized luminescence performance, enabling various applications, including smart windows, multi-color circularly polarized luminescence and anticounterfeiting.

Excitation-Dependent Fluorescence with Excitation-Selective Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Hierarchically Organized Atomic Nanoclusters

Nanometer-scaled objects are known to have dimension-related properties, but sometimes the assembly of such objects can lead to the emergence of other properties. Here, we show the assembly of atomically precise gold nanoclusters into large fibrillar structures that are featuring excitation-dependent luminescence with an excitation-selective circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), even though all components are achiral. The origin of CPL in the assembly of atomic clusters has been attributed to the hierarchical organization of atomic clusters into fibrillar structures, mediated via a hydrogen bonding interaction with a surfactant. We follow the assembly process both experimentally and computationally showing the advance in the structural formation along with its chiroptical electronic properties, i.e., circular dichroism (CD) and CPL. Our study here can assist in the rational design of materials featuring chiroptical properties, thus leading to a controlled CPL activity.

Near-Infrared Trapping by Surface Plasmons in Randomized Platinum-Ceramic Metamaterial for Thermal Barrier Coatings

As the operation temperature of next generation gas turbine is targeted to be 1800 °C toward a higher efficiency and lower carbon emission, the near-infrared (NIR) thermal radiation becomes a major concern for the durability of the metallic turbine blades. Although thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are applied to provide thermal insulations, they are translucent to the NIR radiation. It is a major challenge for TBCs to achieve optically thick with limited physical thickness (usually < 1 mm) for effectively shielding the NIR radiation damage. Here, an NIR metamaterial is reported, where a Gd₂ Zr₂ O₇ ceramic matrix is randomly dispersed with microscale Pt (0.53 vol%) nanoparticles with a size of 100-500 nm. Attenuated by the Gd₂ Zr₂ O₇ matrix, a broadband NIR extinction is achieved through the red-shifted plasmon resonance frequencies and higher-order multipole resonances of the Pt nanoparticles. A very high absorption coefficient of ≈3 × 10⁴ m^-1 , approaching the Rosseland diffusion limit for a typical coating thickness, minimizes the radiative thermal conductivity to ≈10^-2  W m^-1 K^-1 and successfully shields the radiative heat transfer. This work suggests that constructing a conductor/ceramic metamaterial with tunable plasmonics could be a strategy to shield NIR thermal radiation for high temperature applications.
