Manipulating Photoconduction in Supramolecular Networks for Solar-Driven Nitrate Conversion to Ammonia and Oxygen

For photoelectrodes to be used in practical catalytic applications, challenges exist in achieving the efficient production and transport of photogenerated charge-separated states. Analogous concepts in traditional inorganic photoelectrodes can be applied to their organic-polymer counterparts with improved charge-separation efficiencies. In this work, we develop photoconductive organic networks to form a high-performance photoelectrode for NO3- reduction to NH3. In the integrated network, interfaces between the organic electron-donating photoconductor and electron-accepting catalyst can generate charge carriers efficiently upon illumination, leading to enhanced charge separation for photoelectrocatalysis. The photoelectrode network is capable of converting NO3- to NH3 at an external quantum efficiency of 13%. By coupling with a BiVO4 photoanode in tandem, the system reduces NO3- to NH3 and oxidizes H2O to O2 simultaneously at Faradaic efficiencies of 95-98% with sustained photocurrents and production yields. Investigation of the photoconductive network by steady-state/time-resolved spectroscopies reveals the efficient generation and transport of free charge carriers in the photoelectrode, providing a basis for high photoelectrocatalytic performances.

Hierarchical Branched TiO2 Photo/Photoelectrocatalyst with Directed Charge Transfer for Efficient Hydrogen Production from Seawater

The directed electron transport channel design in semiconductors, which could promote charge utilization, is attractive but rarely reported. Hierarchical branched titanium dioxide (HB-TiO2), possessing a charge cascade transfer channel, was constructed by assembling titanium-defected TiO2 nanobranches on oxygen-defected TiO2 nanobelts. The interfacial Ti/O vacancies have been detected by X-ray photoelectron and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, and the vacancies act as the "bridge" of photogenerated carrier transport. This structure maintained high photoactivity in H2 production in different mass fractions of NaCl solutions. The photocurrent density of the HB-TiO2 photoanode in natural seawater is 3.9, 2.1, and 2.6 times that of oxygen-defected TiO2 nanobelts, titanium-defected TiO2 nanobranches, and their mixture, respectively. Besides, the charge transport mechanism from the inner lattice to the TiO2 surface is proposed.

Photoelectrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Methanol by Molecular Self-Assemblies Confined in Covalent Polymer Networks

Inspired by the porous structures of photosynthetic organelles, we report here a new type of photoelectrode based on a standalone macroporous conjugated polymer network (MCN) that converts sunlight into high-energy electrons for CO2 reduction to CH3OH. The MCN provides supramolecular cavities with sufficient functional groups that control the structures of photocatalytic assemblies, which circumvents the geometric limitations of traditional inorganic counterparts. Stabilized interfacial contact between MCN and photocatalysts is achieved by strong chemical linkages throughout the network. Solar irradiation of MCN with a cobalt-based catalyst generates highly reducing electrons for the reduction of CO2 to CH3OH at a conversion efficiency of 70%. Production of CH3OH sustains for at least 100 h, with a small decrease in yield rates. Scaling up the photoelectrode from 1 to 100 cm2 results in photocurrent generation stabilized at 0.25 A and continuous CH3OH production at a conversion efficiency of 85%, demonstrating the scalability and high performances.

Accelerating the Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics with a Pulsed Laser-Synthesized Platinum Nanocluster-Decorated Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater environments are essential for sustainable hydrogen production. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is synthesized through pulsed laser ablation in liquid, followed by pyrolysis, producing N-doped porous carbon (NC). NC matrix serves as a self-template, enabling Pt nanocluster decoration (NC-Pt) via pulsed laser irradiation in liquid. NC-Pt exhibits a large surface area, porous structure, high conductivity, N-rich carbon, abundant active sites, low Pt content, and a strong NC-Pt interaction. These properties enhance efficient mass transport during the HER. Remarkably, the optimized NC-Pt-4 catalyst achieves low HER overpotentials of 52, 57, and 53 mV to attain 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline, alkaline seawater, and simulated seawater, surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts. In a two-electrode system with NC-Pt-4(-)ǀǀIrO2(+) as cathode and anode, it demonstrates excellent direct seawater electrolysis performance, with a low cell voltage of 1.63 mV to attain 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable stability. This study presents a rapid and efficient method for fabricating cost-effective and highly effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline and alkaline seawater environments.

0.68% of solar-to-hydrogen efficiency and high photostability of organic-inorganic membrane catalyst

Solar-driven flat-panel H2O-to-H2 conversion is an important technology for value-added solar fuel production. However, most frequently used particulate photocatalysts are hard to achieve stable photocatalysis in flat-panel reaction module due to the influence of mechanical shear force. Herein, a highly active CdS@SiO2-Pt composite with rapid CdS-to-Pt electron transfer and restrained photoexciton recombination was prepared to process into an organic-inorganic membrane by compounding with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This PVDF networked organic-inorganic membrane displays high photostability and excellent operability, achieving improved simulated sunlight-driven alkaline H2O-to-H2 conversion activity (213.48 mmol m-2 h-1) following a 0.68% of solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. No obvious variation in its appearance and micromorphology was observed even being recycled for 50-times, which considerably outperforms the existing membrane photocatalysts. Subsequently, a homemade panel H2O-to-H2 conversion system was fabricated to obtain a 0.05% of solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. In this study, we opens up a prospect for practical application of photocatalysis technology.

In Situ and Continuous Decoding Hydrogen Generation in Solar Water-Splitting Cells

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is gaining recognition as an effective method for producing green hydrogen. However, the absence of in situ, continuous decoding hydrogen generation tools hampers a detailed understanding of the physics and chemistry involved in hydrogen generation within PEC systems. In this article, we present a quantitative, spatiotemporally resolved optical sensor employing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) to probe hydrogen formation and temperature characteristics in the PEC system. Demonstrating this principle, we observed hydrogen formation and temperature changes in a novel cappuccino cell using a BiVO4/TiO2 photoanode and a Cu2O/CuO/TiO2 photocathode. Our findings demonstrate that FBG sensors can probe dynamic hydrogen formation at 0.5 s temporal resolution; these sensors are capable of detecting hydrogen concentrations as low as 0.6 mM. We conducted in situ and continuous monitoring of hydrogen and temperature to ascertain various parameters: the rate of hydrogen production at the photocathode surface, the time to reach hydrogen saturation, the distribution of hydrogen and temperature, and the rate of hydrogen transfer in the electrolyte under both external bias and unbiased voltage conditions. These results contribute valuable insights into the design and optimization of PEC water-splitting devices, advancing the in situ comprehensive monitoring of PEC water-splitting processes.

Solar-Driven Sustainability: III-V Semiconductor for Green Energy Production Technologies

Long-term societal prosperity depends on addressing the world's energy and environmental problems, and photocatalysis has emerged as a viable remedy. Improving the efficiency of photocatalytic processes is fundamentally achieved by optimizing the effective utilization of solar energy and enhancing the efficient separation of photogenerated charges. It has been demonstrated that the fabrication of III-V semiconductor-based photocatalysts is effective in increasing solar light absorption, long-term stability, large-scale production and promoting charge transfer. This focused review explores on the current developments in III-V semiconductor materials for solar-powered photocatalytic systems. The review explores on various subjects, including the advancement of III-V semiconductors, photocatalytic mechanisms, and their uses in H2 conversion, CO2 reduction, environmental remediation, and photocatalytic oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to design heterostructures, the review delves into basic concepts including solar light absorption and effective charge separation. It also highlights significant advancements in green energy systems for water splitting, emphasizing the significance of establishing eco-friendly systems for CO2 reduction and hydrogen production. The main purpose is to produce hydrogen through sustainable and ecologically friendly energy conversion. The review intends to foster the development of greener and more sustainable energy source by encouraging researchers and developers to focus on practical applications and advancements in solar-powered photocatalysis.

Next-Generation Green Hydrogen: Progress and Perspective from Electricity, Catalyst to Electrolyte in Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Green hydrogen from electrolysis of water has attracted widespread attention as a renewable power source. Among several hydrogen production methods, it has become the most promising technology. However, there is no large-scale renewable hydrogen production system currently that can compete with conventional fossil fuel hydrogen production. Renewable energy electrocatalytic water splitting is an ideal production technology with environmental cleanliness protection and good hydrogen purity, which meet the requirements of future development. This review summarizes and introduces the current status of hydrogen production by water splitting from three aspects: electricity, catalyst and electrolyte. In particular, the present situation and the latest progress of the key sources of power, catalytic materials and electrolyzers for electrocatalytic water splitting are introduced. Finally, the problems of hydrogen generation from electrolytic water splitting and directions of next-generation green hydrogen in the future are discussed and outlooked. It is expected that this review will have an important impact on the field of hydrogen production from water.

Photo-thermal synergistic CO2 hydrogenation towards CO over PtRh bimetal-decorated GaN nanowires/Si

Photo-thermal-synergistic hydrogenation is a promising strategy for upcycling carbon dioxide into fuels and chemicals by maximally utilizing full-spectrum solar energy. Herein, by immobilizing Pt-Rh bimetal onto a well-developed GaN NWs/Si platform, CO2 was photo-thermo-catalytically hydrogenated towards CO under concentrated light illumination without extra energies. The as-designed architecture demonstrates a considerable CO evolution rate of 11.7 mol gGaN-1 h-1 with a high selectivity of 98.5% under concentrated light illumination of 5.3 W cm-2, leading to a benchmark turnover frequency of 26 486 mol CO per mol PtRh per hour. It is nearly 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure thermal catalysis under the same temperature by external heating without light. Control experiments, various spectroscopic characterization methods, and density functional theory calculations are correlatively conducted to reveal the origin of the remarkable performance as well as the photo-thermal enhanced mechanism. It is found that the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is dramatically inhibited under high temperatures arising from the photothermal effect. More critically, the synergy between photogenerated carriers arising from ultraviolet light and photoinduced heat arising from visible- and infrared light enables a sharp reduction of the apparent activation barrier of CO2 hydrogenation from 2.09 downward to 1.18 eV. The evolution pathway of CO2 hydrogenation towards CO is also disclosed at the molecular level. Furthermore, compared to monometallic Pt, the introduction of Rh further reduces the desorption energy barrier of *CO by optimizing the electronic properties of Pt, thus enabling the achievement of excellent activity and selectivity. This work provides new insights into CO2 hydrogenation by maximally utilizing full-spectrum sunlight via photo-thermal synergy.

Designable Photo-Responsive Micron-Scale Ultrathin Peptoid Nanobelts for Enhanced Performance on Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of high-reactive single-atom catalysts (SACs) based on long-range-ordered ultrathin organic nanomaterials (UTONMs) (i.e., below 3 nm) provides a significant tactic for the advancement in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) but remains challenging. Herein, photo-responsive ultrathin peptoid nanobelts (UTPNBs) with a thickness of ≈2.2 nm and micron-scaled length are generated using the self-assembly of azobenzene-containing amphiphilic ternary alternating peptoids. The pendants hydrophobic conjugate stacking mechanism reveals the formation of 1D ultralong UTPNBs, whose thickness is dictated by the length of side groups that are linked to peptoid backbones. The photo-responsive feature is demonstrated by a reversible morphological transformation from UTPNBs to nanospheres (21.5 nm) upon alternative irradiation with UV and visible lights. Furthermore, the electrocatalyst performance of these aggregates co-decorated with nitrogen-rich ligand of terpyridine (TE) and uniformly-distributed atomic platinum (Pt) is evaluated toward HER, with a photo-controllable electrocatalyst activity that highly depended on both the presence of Pt element and structural characteristic of substrates. The Pt-based SACs using TE-modified UTPNBs as support exhibit a favorable electrocatalytic capacity with an overpotential of ≈28 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. This work presents a promising strategy to fabricate stimuli-responsive UTONMs-based catalysts with controllable HER catalytic performance.

Surface reconstruction in amorphous CoFe-based hydroxides/crystalline phosphide heterostructure for accelerated saline water electrolysis

Developing electrocatalysts with high activity and robust performance for large-scale seawater electrolysis to produce hydrogen holds immense significance. Herein, a highly active bifunctional electrode composed of amorphous cobalt-iron layered double hydroxides (CoFeLDH) and crystalline nickel phosphide (Ni2P) (denoted as CoFeLDH@Ni2P), is employed to boost hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis. The strong interface coupling effectively modifies the electronic structure at active sites, thereby accelerating the catalytic reaction kinetics. Impressively, in situ Raman and post-stability analyses demonstrate a unique reconstruction behavior on the CoFeLDH@Ni2P electrode. Bimetal co-incorporated NiOOH (CoFe-NiOOH) and Ni(OH)2 species are formed during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while CoFeLDH@Ni2P can transform into Ni(OH)2 species during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process. Furthermore, the highly negatively charged surface selectively rejects Cl- ions by formed PO43-, endowing CoFeLDH@Ni2P with excellent tolerance and promising durability in saline electrolytes. Consequently, the CoFeLDH@Ni2P electrode exhibits an overpotential of 106 mV for HER at 10 mA cm-2 and 308 mV for OER to achieve 100 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. Additionally, the CoFeLDH@Ni2P(+,-) electrolyzer requires a low cell voltage of 1.56 V to deliver 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH + Seasalt. This work presents an appealing strategy for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts with amorphous-crystalline interfaces, which reveals the source of the activity of transition-metal phosphating compounds in saline water electrolysis.

Group-IIIA element doped BaSnS2 as a high efficiency absorber for intermediate band solar cell from a first-principles insight

The quest for high-performance solar cell absorbers has garnered significant attention in the field of photovoltaic research in recent years. To overcome the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit of ∼31% for single junction solar cell and realize higher power conversion efficiency, the concept of an intermediate band solar cell (IBSC) has been proposed. This involves the incorporation of an intermediate band (IB) to assist the three band-edge absorptions within the single absorber layer. BaSnS2 has an appropriate width of its forbidden gap in order to host an IB. In this work, doping of BaSnS2 was studied based on hybrid functional calculations. The results demonstrated that isolated and half-filled IBs were generated with suitable energy states in the band gap region after group-IIIA element (i.e., Al, Ga, and In) doping at Sn site. The theoretical efficiencies under one sun illumination of 39.0%, 44.3%, and 39.7% were obtained for 25% doping concentration of Al, Ga, and In, respectively; thus, larger than the single-junction SQ-limit. Furthermore, the dopants have lower formation energies when substituting the Sn site compare to occupying the Ba and S sites, and that helps realizing a proper IB with three band-edge absorptions. Therefore, group-IIIA element doped BaSnS2 is proposed as a high-efficiency absorber for IBSC.

Photoreduction of Aqueous Protons Coupling with Alcohol Oxidation on a S-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst MnO/Carbon Nitride

Crystalline carbon nitride (CCN), derived from amorphous polymeric CN, is considered as a new generation of metal-free photocatalyst because of its high crystallinity. In order to further promote the photocatalytic performance of CCN, p-type MnO nanoparticles are in situ synthesized and merged with n-type CCN through a one-pot process to form p-n heterojunction. The formed interfacial electric field between the semiconductors with different work functions efficiently breaks the coulomb interaction between MnO and CCN. The prepared catalysts exhibit drastically increased photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) activity integrated with oxidation of alkyl and aryl alcohols under irradiation of visible light. In the aqueous solution of benzyl alcohol (BzOH), the hydrogen generation rate over MnO/CCN (39.58 µmol h-1) is nearly 7 times and 37 times that of pure CCN (5.76 µmol h-1) and CN (1.06 µmol h-1), respectively, combining with oxidation of BzOH to benzaldehyde. This work proposes an avenue for in situ construction of a novel 2D material-based S-scheme heterojunction and extends its application in solar energy conservation and utilization.

Metal nitrides for seawater electrolysis

Electrocatalytic high-throughput seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production is a promising green energy technology that offers possibilities for environmental and energy sustainability. However, large-scale application is limited by the complex composition of seawater, high concentration of Cl- leading to competing reaction, and severe corrosion of electrode materials. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted to address these challenges. Metal nitrides (MNs) with excellent chemical stability and catalytic properties have emerged as ideal electrocatalyst candidates. This review presents the electrode reactions and basic parameters of the seawater splitting process, and summarizes the types and selection principles of conductive substrates with critical analysis of the design principles for seawater electrocatalysts. The focus is on discussing the properties, synthesis, and design strategies of MN-based electrocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook for the future development of MNs in the high-throughput seawater electrolysis field and highlight key issues that require further research and optimization.
