Construction of angstrom-scale ion channels with versatile pore configurations and sizes by metal-organic frameworks

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Sustainable Crop Disease Management: Current Applications, Mechanistic Insights, and Future Challenges

Efficient management of crop diseases and yield enhancement are essential for addressing the increasing food demands due to global population growth. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have rapidly evolved throughout the 21st century, are notable for their vast surface area, porosity, and adaptability, establishing them as highly effective vehicles for controlled drug delivery. This review methodically categorizes common MOFs employed in crop disease management and details their effectiveness against various pathogens. Additionally, by critically evaluating existing research, it outlines strategic approaches for the design of drug-delivery MOFs and explains the mechanisms through which MOFs enhance disease resistance. Finally, this paper identifies the current challenges in MOF research for crop disease management and suggests directions for future research. Through this in-depth review, the paper seeks to enrich the understanding of MOFs applications in crop disease management and offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners.

Simultaneous Manipulation of Membrane Enthalpy and Entropy Barriers towards Superior Ion Separations

Sub-nanoporous membranes with ion selective transport functions are important for energy utilization, environmental remediation, and fundamental bioinspired engineering. Although mono/multivalent ions can be separated by monovalent ion selective membranes (MISMs), the current theory fails to inspire rapid advances in MISMs. Here, we apply transition state theory (TST) by regulating the enthalpy barrier (ΔH) and entropy barrier (ΔS) for designing next-generation monovalent cation exchange membranes (MCEMs) with great improvement in ion selective separation. Using a molecule-absorbed porous material as an interlayer to construct a denser selective layer can achieve a greater absolute value of ΔS for Li+ and Mg2+ transport, greater ΔH for Mg2+ transport and lower ΔH for Li+ transport. This recorded performance with a Li+/Mg2+ perm-selectivity of 25.50 and a Li+ flux of 1.86 mol ⋅ m-2 ⋅ h-1 surpasses the contemporary "upper bound" plot for Li+/Mg2+ separations. Most importantly, our synthesized MCEM also demonstrates excellent operational stability during the selective electrodialysis (S-ED) processes for realizing scalability in practical applications.

Interfacial Super-Assembly of Vacancy Engineered Ultrathin-Nanosheets Toward Nanochannels for Smart Ion Transport and Salinity Gradient Power Conversion

Ion-selective nanochannel membranes assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets hold immense promise for power conversion using salinity gradient. However, they face challenges stemming from insufficient surface charge density, which impairs both permselectivity and durability. Herein, we present a novel vacancy-engineered, oxygen-deficient NiCo layered double hydroxide (NiCoLDH)/cellulose nanofibers-wrapped carbon nanotubes (VOLDH/CNF-CNT) composite membrane. This membrane, featuring abundant angstrom-scale, cation-selective nanochannels, is designed and fabricated through a synergistic combination of vacancy engineering and interfacial super-assembly. The composite membrane shows interlayer free-spacing of ~3.62 Å, which validates the membrane size exclusion selectivity. This strategy, validated by DFT calculations and experimental data, improves hydrophilicity and surface charge density, leading to the strong interaction with K+ ions to benefit the low ion transport resistance and exceptional charge selectivity. When employed in an artificial river water|seawater salinity gradient power generator, it delivers a high-power density of 5.35 W/m2 with long-term durability (20,000s), which is almost 400 % higher than that of the pristine NiCoLDH membrane. Furthermore, it displays both pH- and temperature-sensitive ion transport behavior, offering additional opportunities for optimization. This work establishes a basis for high-performance salinity gradient power conversion and underscores the potential of vacancy engineering and super-assembly in customizing 2D nanomaterials for diverse advanced nanofluidic energy devices.

Microporous Materials in Polymer Electrolytes: The Merit of Order

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have garnered significant attention in the critical field of sustainable energy storage due to their potential benefits in safety, energy density, and cycle life. The large-scale, cost-effective production of SSBs necessitates the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes. However, the manufacturing of SSBs relies heavily on the advancement of suitable solid-state electrolytes. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs), which combine the advantages of ordered microporous materials (OMMs) and polymer electrolytes, meet the requirements for high ionic conductivity/transference number, stability with respect to electrodes, compatibility with established manufacturing processes, and cost-effectiveness, making them particularly well-suited for mass production of SSBs. This review delineates how structural ordering dictates the fundamental physicochemical properties of OMMs, including ion transport, thermal transfer, and mechanical stability. The applications of prominent OMMs are critically examined, such as metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and zeolites, in CPEs, highlighting how structural ordering facilitates the fulfillment of property requirements. Finally, an outlook on the field is provided, exploring how the properties of CPEs can be enhanced through the dimensional design of OMMs, and the importance of uncovering the underlying "feature-function" mechanisms of various CPE types is underscored.

Reverse-Selective Anion Separation Relies on Charged "Hourglass" Gate

According to the hydration size and charge property of separated ions, the transport channel can be constructed to achieve precision ion separation, but the ion geometry as a separation parameter to design the channel structure is rarely reported. Herein, a reverse-selective anion separation membrane composed of a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) layer with a charged "hourglass" channel as an ion-selective switch to manipulate oxoanion transport is developed. The gate in "hourglass" with tetrahedral geometry similar to the oxoanion (such as SO2- 4, Cr 2O2- 7, and MnO- 4) boosts the transmission effect oxoanion much larger than Cl- through geometric matching and Coulomb interaction. Specific channel structure exhibits an abnormal selectivity for SO2- 4/Cl- of 20, Cr 2O2- 7/Cl- of 6.6, and MnO- 4/Cl- of 4.0 in a binary-ion system. The transfer behavior of SO2- 4 in the channel revealed by molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculation further indicates the mechanism of the abnormal separation performance. The universality of the membrane structure is validated by the formation of different nitrogen-containing modified layers, which also achieves in situ growth of the MOFs layer, and exhibits similar reversal separation performance. The geometric configuration control of ion transport channels presents a novel effective strategy to realize the precise separation of target ions.

Unlocking Direct Lithium Extraction in Harsh Conditions through Thiol-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Subnanofluidic Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with high ion selectivity are highly desirable for direct lithium-ion (Li+) separation from industrial brines. However, very few MOF membranes can efficiently separate Li+ from brines of high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratios and keep stable in ultrahigh Mg2+-concentrated brines. This work reports a type of MOF-channel membranes (MOFCMs) by growing UiO-66-(SH)2 into the nanochannels of polymer substrates to improve the efficiency of MOF membranes for challenging Li+ extraction. The resulting membranes demonstrate excellent monovalent metal ion selectivity over divalent metal ions, with Li+/Mg2+ selectivity up to 103 since Mg2+ should overcome a higher energy barrier than Li+ when transported through the MOF pores, as confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. Under dual-ion diffusion, as the Mg2+/Li+ mole ratio of the feed solution increases from 0.2 to 30, the membrane Li+/Mg2+ selectivity decreases from 1516 to 19, corresponding to the purity of lithium products between 99.9 and 95.0%. Further research on multi-ion diffusion that involves Mg2+ and three monovalent metal ions (K+, Na+, and Li+, referred to as M+) in the feed solutions shows a significant improvement in Li+/Mg2+ separation efficiency. The Li+/Mg2+ selectivity can go up to 1114 when the Mg2+/M+ molar concentration ratio is 1:1, and it remains at 19 when the ratio is 30:1. The membrane selectivity is also stable for 30 days in a highly concentrated solution with a high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratio. These results indicate the feasibility of the MOFCMs for direct lithium extraction from brines with Mg2+ concentrations up to 3.5 M. This study provides an alternative strategy for designing efficient MOF membranes in extracting valuable minerals in the future.

Crown-Ether Crystal Channel Membranes with Subnanometer Pores for Selective Na+ Transport

Emulating biological sodium ion channels to achieve high selectivity and rapid Na+ transport is important for water desalination, energy conversion, and separation processes. However, the development of artificial ion channels, especially multichannels, to achieve high ion selectivity, remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of ion channel membranes utilizing crown-ether crystals (DA18C6-nitrate crystals), which feature extremely consistent subnanometer pores. The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were initially subjected to amination, followed by the in situ growth of DA18C6-nitrate crystals to establish ordered multichannels aimed at facilitating selective Na+ conductance. These channels allow rapid Na+ transport while inhibiting the migration of other ions (K+ and Ca2+). The Na+ transport rate was 2.15 mol m-2 h-1, resulting in the Na+/K+ and Na+/Ca2+ selectivity ratios of 6.53 and 12.56, respectively. Due to the immobilization of the crown-ether ring, when the size of the transmembrane ion exceeded that of the crown-ether ring's cavity, the ions had to undergo a dehydration process to pass through the channel. This resulted in the ions encountering a higher energy barrier upon entering the channel, making it more difficult for them to permeate. However, the size of Na+ was compatible with the cavity of the crown-ether ring and was able to displace the hydrated layer effectively, facilitating selective Na+ translocation. In summary, this research offers a promising approach for the future development of functionalized ion channels and efficient membrane materials tailored for high-performance Na+ separation.

Perfect confinement of crown ethers in MOF membrane for complete dehydration and fast transport of monovalent ions

Fast transport of monovalent ions is imperative in selective monovalent ion separation based on membranes. Here, we report the in situ growth of crown ether@UiO-66 membranes at a mild condition, where dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) or dibenzo-15-crown-5 is perfectly confined in the UiO-66 cavity. Crown ether@UiO-66 membranes exhibit enhanced monovalent ion transport rates and mono-/divalent ion selectivity, due to the combination of size sieving and interaction screening effects toward the complete monovalent ion dehydration. Specifically, the DB18C6@UiO-66 membrane shows a permeation rate (e.g., K+) of 1.2 mol per square meter per hour and a mono-/divalent ion selectivity (e.g., K+/Mg2+) of 57. Theoretical calculations and simulations illustrate that, presumably, ions are completely dehydrated while transporting through the DB18C6@UiO-66 cavity with a lower energy barrier than that of the UiO-66 cavity. This work provides a strategy to develop efficient ion separation membranes via integrating size sieving and interaction screening and to illuminate the effect of ion dehydration on fast ion transport.

Metal-organic framework-based adsorbents for blood purification: progress, challenges, and prospects

Blood purification, such as hemodialysis (HD), plasma exchange (PE), and hemoperfusion (HP), is widely applied in patients with organ failure (such as kidney and liver failure). Among them, HP mainly relies on porous adsorbents to efficiently adsorb accumulated metabolic wastes and toxins, thus improving purification efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a high porosity, large surface area, high loading capacity, and tailorable topology, are emerging as some of the most promising materials for HP. Compared with non-metal framework counterparts, the self-built metal centers of MOFs feature the intrinsic advantages of coordination with toxin molecules. However, research on MOFs in blood purification is insufficient, particularly in contrast to materials applied in other biomedical applications. Thus, to broaden this area, this review first discusses the essential characteristics, potential mechanisms, and structure-function relationship between MOFs and toxin adsorption based on porosity, topology, ligand functionalization, metal centers, and toxin types. Moreover, the stability, utilization safety, and hemocompatibility of MOFs are illustrated for adsorbent selection. The current development and progress in MOF composites for HD, HP, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are also summarized to highlight their practicability. Finally, we propose future opportunities and challenges from materials design and manufacture to the computational prediction of MOFs in blood purification. It is anticipated that our review will expand the interest of researchers for more impact in this area.

A hard sphere model for single-file water transport across biological membranes

We use Gürsey's statistical mechanics of a one-dimensional fluid to find a formula for theP f / P d ratio in the transport of hard spheres across a membrane through a narrow channel that can accommodate molecular movement only in single file. P f is the membrane permeability for osmotic flow and P d the permeability for exchange across the membrane in the absence of osmotic flow. The deviation of the ratio from unity indicates the degree of cooperative transport relative to ordinary diffusion of independent molecules. In contrast to an early idea thatP f / P d must be equal to the number of molecules in the channel, regardless of the physical nature of the interactions among the molecules, we find a functional dependence on the fractional occupancy of the length of the channel by the hard spheres. We also attempt a random walk calculation for P d individually, which gives a result for P f as well when combined with the ratio.

Two-dimensional chiral metal-organic framework nanosheets L-hyp-Ni/Fe@SiO2 composite for HPLC separation

In this study, we have synthesised a chiral l-hyp-Ni/Fe@SiO2 composite as a chiral stationary phase (CSP) for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the first time. This was achieved by coating two-dimensional (2D) chiral metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) l-hyp-Ni/Fe onto the surface of activated SiO2 microspheres using the "wrapped in net" method. The separation efficiency of the l-hyp-Ni/Fe chromatographic column was systematically evaluated in normal-phase HPLC (NP-HPLC) and reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) configurations, employing various racemates as analytes. The findings revealed that 16 chiral compounds were separated using NP-HPLC, and five were separated using RP-HPLC, encompassing alcohols, amines, ketones, esters, alkanes, ethers, amino acids and sulfoxides. Notably, the resolution (Rs) of nine chiral compounds exceeded 1.5, indicating baseline separation. Furthermore, the resolution performance of the l-hyp-Ni/Fe@SiO2-packed column was compared with that of Chiralpak AD-H. It was observed that certain enantiomers, which either could not be resolved or were inadequately separated on the Chiralpak AD-H column, attained separation on the 2D chiral MONs column. These findings suggest a complementary relationship between the two columns in racemate separation, with their combined application facilitating the resolution of a broader spectrum of chiral compounds. In addition, baseline separation was achieved for five positional isomers on the l-hyp-Ni/Fe@SiO2-packed column. The effects of the analyte mass and column temperature on the resolution were also examined. Moreover, during HPLC analysis, the l-hyp-Ni/Fe columns demonstrated commendable repeatability, stability and reproducibility in enantiomer separation. This research not only advances the utilisation of 2D chiral MONs as CSPs but also expands their applications in the separation sciences.

Bio-Inspired Subnanofluidics: Advanced Fabrication and Functionalization

Biological ion channels can realize high-speed and high-selective ion transport through the protein filter with the sub-1-nanometer channel. Inspired by biological ion channels, various kinds of artificial subnanopores, subnanochannels, and subnanoslits with improved ion selectivity and permeability are recently developed for efficient separation, energy conversion, and biosensing. This review article discusses the advanced fabrication and functionalization methods for constructing subnanofluidic pores, channels, tubes, and slits, which have shown great potential for various applications. Novel fabrication methods for producing subnanofluidics, including top-down techniques such as electron beam etching, ion irradiation, and electrochemical etching, as well as bottom-up approaches starting from advanced microporous frameworks, microporous polymers, lipid bilayer embedded subnanochannels, and stacked 2D materials are well summarized. Meanwhile, the functionalization methods of subnanochannels are discussed based on the introduction of functional groups, which are classified into direct synthesis, covalent bond modifications, and functional molecule fillings. These methods have enabled the construction of subnanochannels with precise control of structure, size, and functionality. The current progress, challenges, and future directions in the field of subnanofluidic are also discussed.

Regulating ion affinity and dehydration of metal-organic framework sub-nanochannels for high-precision ion separation

Membrane consisting of ordered sub-nanochannels has been pursued in ion separation technology to achieve applications including desalination, environment management, and energy conversion. However, high-precision ion separation has not yet been achieved owing to the lack of deep understanding of ion transport mechanism in confined environments. Biological ion channels can conduct ions with ultrahigh permeability and selectivity, which is inseparable from the important role of channel size and "ion-channel" interaction. Here, inspired by the biological systems, we report the high-precision separation of monovalent and divalent cations in functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes (UiO-66-(X)2, X = NH2, SH, OH and OCH3). We find that the functional group (X) and size of the MOF sub-nanochannel synergistically regulate the ion binding affinity and dehydration process, which is the key in enlarging the transport activation energy difference between target and interference ions to improve the separation performance. The K+/Mg2+ selectivity of the UiO-66-(OCH3)2 membrane reaches as high as 1567.8. This work provides a gateway to the understanding of ion transport mechanism and development of high-precision ion separation membranes.

Light-responsive and ultrapermeable two-dimensional metal-organic framework membrane for efficient ionic energy harvesting

Nanofluidic membranes offer exceptional promise for osmotic energy conversion, but the challenge of balancing ionic selectivity and permeability persists. Here, we present a bionic nanofluidic system based on two-dimensional (2D) copper tetra-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin framework (Cu-TCPP). The inherent nanoporous structure and horizontal interlayer channels endow the Cu-TCPP membrane with ultrahigh ion permeability and allow for a power density of 16.64 W m-2, surpassing state of-the-art nanochannel membranes. Moreover, leveraging the photo-thermal property of Cu-TCPP, light-controlled ion active transport is realized even under natural sunlight. By combining solar energy with salinity gradient, the driving force for ion transport is reinforced, leading to further improvements in energy conversion performance. Notably, light could even eliminate the need for salinity gradient, achieving a power density of 0.82 W m-2 in a symmetric solution system. Our work introduces a new perspective on developing advanced membranes for solar/ionic energy conversion and extends the concept of salinity energy to a notion of ionic energy.

2D Materials Nanoarchitectonics for 3D Structures/Functions

It has become clear that superior material functions are derived from precisely controlled nanostructures. This has been greatly accelerated by the development of nanotechnology. The next step is to assemble materials with knowledge of their nano-level structures. This task is assigned to the post-nanotechnology concept of nanoarchitectonics. However, nanoarchitectonics, which creates intricate three-dimensional functional structures, is not always easy. Two-dimensional nanoarchitectonics based on reactions and arrangements at the surface may be an easier target to tackle. A better methodology would be to define a two-dimensional structure and then develop it into a three-dimensional structure and function. According to these backgrounds, this review paper is organized as follows. The introduction is followed by a summary of the three issues; (i) 2D to 3D dynamic structure control: liquid crystal commanded by the surface, (ii) 2D to 3D rational construction: a metal-organic framework (MOF) and a covalent organic framework (COF); (iii) 2D to 3D functional amplification: cells regulated by the surface. In addition, this review summarizes the important aspects of the ultimate three-dimensional nanoarchitectonics as a perspective. The goal of this paper is to establish an integrated concept of functional material creation by reconsidering various reported cases from the viewpoint of nanoarchitectonics, where nanoarchitectonics can be regarded as a method for everything in materials science.

Modular Gating of Ion Transport by Postsynthetic Charge Transfer Complexation in a Metal-Organic Framework

Nature's design of biological ion channels that demonstrates efficient gating and selectivity brings to light a very promising model to mimic and design for achieving selective and tunable ion transport. Functionalized nanopores that permit modulation of the pore wall charges are a compelling approach to gain control over the ion transport mechanism through the pores. This makes way for employing a noncovalent supramolecular approach for attaining charge reversal of the MOF pore walls using donor-acceptor pairs that can demonstrate strong charge transfer interactions. Herein, robust Zr4+-based mesoporous MOF-808 was postsynthetically modified into an anion-selective nanochannel (MOF-808-MV) by modification with dicationic viologen-based motifs. Charge modulation and even reversal of the MOF-808-MV pore walls were then explored taking advantage of strong charge transfer interactions between the grafted dicationic viologen acceptor moieties and anionic, π-electron-rich donor guest molecules such as pyranine (PYR) and tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoic acid (TTF-TA). Tunability of the MOF pore charge from positive to neutral to negative was achieved via simple methodologies such as diffusion control in case of guest molecule like PYR and by pH modulation for pH-responsive guest like TTF-TA. This results in a concomitant modulation in the selectivity of the nanochannel, rendering it from anion-selective to ambipolar to cation-selective. Furthermore, as a real-time application of this ion channel, Na+ ion conductivity (σ = 3.5 × 10-5 S cm-1) was studied at ambient temperature.

UiO-66 framework with an encapsulated spin probe: synthesis and exceptional sensitivity to mechanical pressure

Probes sensitive to mechanical stress are in demand for the analysis of pressure distribution in materials, and the design of pressure sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly promising due to their structural tunability. We report a new pressure-sensing material, which is based on the UiO-66 framework with trace amounts of a spin probe (0.03 wt%) encapsulated in cavities. To obtain this material, we developed an approach for encapsulation of stable nitroxide radical TEMPO ((2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl) into the micropores of UiO-66 during its solvothermal synthesis. Pressure read-out using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy allows monitoring the degradation of the defected MOF structure upon pressurization, where full collapse of pores occurs at as low a pressure as 0.13 GPa. The developed methodology can be used in and ex situ and provides sensitive tools for non-destructive mapping of pressure effects in various materials.

Hydrogen-bonded Complex-based Frameworks for Stable Lithium Storage

Metal-complex-based materials for lithium storage have attracted great interest due to their highly designable structures with multiple active sites and well-defined lithium transport pathways. Their cycling and rate performances, however, are still constrained by structural stability and electrical conductivity. Herein, we present two hydrogen-bonded complex-based frameworks with excellent lithium storage capability. Multiple hydrogen bonds among the mononuclear molecules result in three-dimensional frameworks that are stable in electrolyte. The origin of the remarkable lithium storage performance of this family was revealed through kinetic analysis and DFT calculations.
