Electrochemical generation of hydrogen peroxide from a zinc gallium oxide anode with dual active sites

Catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic H2O2 synthesis via simple combination of a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) stir bar and ultrasound

Herein, we present a catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic method for synthesizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by combining continuous agitation with a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) stir bar and ultrasonication. A high H2O2 production rate of 256.6 μM h-1 is achieved under ambient conditions without adding particle catalysts and sacrificial agents, which is competitive with recent advancements in redox technology. Eco-friendliness, convenience and efficiency make this process a promising alternative method for H2O2 synthesis.

General Design Concept of High-Performance Single-Atom-Site Catalysts for H2O2 Electrosynthesis

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a green oxidizing agent is widely used in various fields. Electrosynthesis of H2O2 has gradually become a hotspot due to its convenient and environment-friendly features. Single-atom-site catalysts (SASCs) with uniform active sites are the ideal catalysts for the in-depth study of the reaction mechanism and structure-performance relationship. In this review, the outstanding achievements of SASCs in the electrosynthesis of H2O2 through 2e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and 2e- water oxygen reaction (WOR) in recent years, are summarized. First, the elementary steps of the two pathways and the roles of key intermediates (*OOH and *OH) in the reactions are systematically discussed. Next, the influence of the size effect, electronic structure regulation, the support/interfacial effect, the optimization of coordination microenvironments, and the SASCs-derived catalysts applied in 2e- ORR are systematically analyzed. Besides, the developments of SASCs in 2e- WOR are also overviewed. Finally, the research progress of H2O2 electrosynthesis on SASCs is concluded, and an outlook on the rational design of SASCs is presented in conjunction with the design strategies and characterization techniques.

Bioinspired Tetranuclear Manganese Cubane Complex as an Efficient Molecular Electrocatalyst for Two-Electron Water Oxidation Towards Hydrogen Peroxide

Stable homogeneous two-electron water oxidation electrocatalysts are highly demanded to understand the precise mechanism and reaction intermediates of electrochemical H2O2 production. Here we report a tetranuclear manganese complex with a cubane structure which can electrocatalyze water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide under alkaline and neutral conditions. Such a complex demonstrates an optimal Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 87 %, which is amongst (if not) the highest FE(H2O2) of reported homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysts. In addition, active species were identified and co-catalysts were excluded through ESI-MS characterization. Furthermore, we identified water binding sites and isolated one-electron oxidation intermediate by chemical oxidation of the catalyst in the presence of water substrates. It is evident that efficient proton-accepting electrolytes avoid rapid proton building-up at electrode and substantially improve reaction rate and selectivity. Accordingly, we propose a two-electron catalytic cycle model for water oxidation to hydrogen peroxide with the bioinspired molecular electrocatalyst. The present work is expected to provide an ideal platform to elucidate the two-electron WOR mechanism at the atomic level.

Combined electrochemical and spectroscopic investigations of carbonate-mediated water oxidation to peroxide

The development of electrosynthetic technologies for H2O2 production is appealing from a sustainability perspective. The use of carbonate species as mediators in water oxidation to peroxide has emerged as a viable route to do so but still many questions remain about the mechanism that must be addressed. To this end, this work combines electrochemical and spectroscopic methods to investigate reaction pathways and factors influencing the efficiency of this reaction. Our results indicate that CO32- is the key species that undergoes electrochemical oxidation, prior to reacting with water away from the catalyst. Through spectroelectrochemical experiments, we noted that CO32- depletion is a factor that limits the selectivity of the process. In turn, we showed how the application of pulsed electrolysis can augment this, with an initial set of optimized parameters increasing the selectivity from 20% to 27%. In all, this work helps pave the way for future development of practical H2O2 electrosynthetic systems.

Performance Improvement of a ZnGa2O4 Extended-Gate Field-Effect Transistor pH Sensor

ZnGa2O4 sensing films were prepared using an RF magnetron sputtering system and connected to a commercial metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) as the extended-gate field-effect transistor (EGFET) to detect pH values. Experimental parameters were adjusted by varying the oxygen flow rate in the process chamber to produce ZnGa2O4 sensing films with different oxygen ratios. These films were then treated in a furnace tube at an annealing temperature of 700 °C. The sensitivity and linearity of the constant current mode and the constant voltage mode were measured and analyzed in the pH range of 2-12. Under the deposition conditions with an oxygen ratio of 6%, the sensitivity reached 23.14 mV/pH and 33.49 μA/pH, with corresponding linearity values of 92.1 and 96.15%, respectively. Finally, the sensing performance of the ZnGa2O4 EGFET pH sensor with and without annealing processes was analyzed and compared.

Unlocking the Potential of Nanobubbles: Achieving Exceptional Gas Efficiency in Electrogeneration of Hydrogen Peroxide

The electrogeneration of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) via the oxygen reduction reaction is a crucial process for advanced water treatment technologies. While significant effort is being devoted to developing highly reactive materials, gas provision systems used in these processes are receiving less attention. Here, using oxygen nanobubbles to improve the gas efficiency of the electrogeneration of H2 O2 is proposed. Aeration with nanobubbles is compared to aeration with macrobubbles under an identical experimental set-up, with nanobubbles showing a much higher gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KL a) of 2.6 × 10-2 min-1 compared to 2.7 × 10-4 min-1 for macrobubbles. Consequently, nanobubbles exhibit a much higher gas efficiency using 60% of O2 delivered to the system compared to 0.19% for macrobubbles. Further, it is observed that the electrogeneration of H2 O2 using carbon felt electrodes is enhanced using nanobubbles. Under the same dissolved oxygen levels, nanobubbles boost the reaction yield to 84%, while macrobubbles yield only 53.8%. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the use of nanobubbles in electrochemical reactions and demonstrate their ability to enhance gas efficiency and electrocatalytic response. These findings have important implications for developing more efficient chemical and electrochemical processes operating under gas-starving systems.

A Molecular Z-Scheme Artificial Photosynthetic System Under the Bias-Free Condition for CO2 Reduction Coupled with Two-electron Water Oxidation: Photocatalytic Production of CO/HCOOH and H2 O2

Bio-inspired molecular-engineered systems have been extensively investigated for the half-reactions of H2 O oxidation or CO2 reduction with sacrificial electron donors/acceptors. However, there has yet to be reported a device for dye-sensitized molecular photoanodes coupled with molecular photocathodes in an aqueous solution without the use of sacrificial reagents. Herein, we will report the integration of SnIV - or AlIII -tetrapyridylporphyrin (SnTPyP or AlTPyP) decorated tin oxide particles (SnTPyP/SnO2 or AlTPyP/SnO2 ) photoanode with the dye-sensitized molecular photocathode on nickel oxide particles containing [Ru(diimine)3 ]2+ as the light-harvesting unit and [Ru(diimine)(CO)2 Cl2 ] as the catalyst unit covalently connected and fixed within poly-pyrrole layer (RuCAT-RuC2 -PolyPyr-PRu/NiO). The simultaneous irradiation of the two photoelectrodes with visible light resulted in H2 O2 on the anode and CO, HCOOH, and H2 on the cathode with high Faradaic efficiencies in purely aqueous conditions without any applied bias is the first example of artificial photosynthesis with only two-electron redox reactions.
