Double Hydroxide Nanocatalysts for Urea Electrooxidation Engineered toward Environmentally Benign Products

Recent advancements in the electrochemical urea oxidation reaction (UOR) present promising avenues for wastewater remediation and energy recovery. Despite progress toward optimized efficiency, hurdles persist in steering oxidation products away from environmentally unfriendly products, mostly due to a lack of understanding of structure-selectivity relationships. In this study, the UOR performance of Ni and Cu double hydroxides, which show marked differences in their reactivity and selectivity is evaluated. CuCo hydroxides predominantly produce N2, reaching a current density of 20 mA cmgeo -2 at 1.04 V - 250 mV less than NiCo hydroxides that generate nitrogen oxides. A collection of in-situ spectroscopies and scattering experiments reveal a unique in situ generated Cu(2-x)+-OO-• active sites in CuCo, which initiates nucleophilic substitution of NH2 from the amide, leading to N-N coupling between *NH on Co and Cu. In contrast, the formation of nitrogen oxides on NiCo is primarily attributed to the presence of high-valence Ni3+ and Ni4+, which facilitates N-H activation. This process, in conjunction with the excessive accumulation of OH- ions on Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted Co sites, leads to the generation of NO2 - as the primary product. This work underscores the importance of catalyst composition and structural engineering in tailoring innocuous UOR products.

Copper-oxygen adducts: new trends in characterization and properties towards C-H activation

This review summarizes the latest discoveries in the field of C-H activation by copper monoxygenases and more particularly by their bioinspired systems. This work first describes the recent background on copper-containing enzymes along with additional interpretations about the nature of the active copper-oxygen intermediates. It then focuses on relevant examples of bioinorganic synthetic copper-oxygen intermediates according to their nuclearity (mono to polynuclear). This includes a detailed description of the spectroscopic features of these adducts as well as their reactivity towards the oxidation of recalcitrant Csp3 -H bonds. The last part is devoted to the significant expansion of heterogeneous catalytic systems based on copper-oxygen cores (i.e. within zeolite frameworks).

Boosting Reactive Oxygen Species Formation Over Pd and VOδ Co-Modified TiO2 for Methane Oxidation into Valuable Oxygenates

Direct photocatalytic methane oxidation into value-added products provides a promising strategy for methane utilization. However, the inefficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) partly limits the activation of CH4. Herein, it is reported that Pd and VOδ co-modified TiO2 enables direct and selective methane oxidation into liquid oxygenates in the presence of O2 and H2. Due to the extra ROS production from the in situ formed H2O2, a highly improved yield rate of 5014 µmol g-1 h-1 for liquid oxygenates with a selectivity of 89.3% is achieved over the optimized Pd0.5V0.2-TiO2 catalyst at ambient temperature, which is much better than those (2682 µmol g-1 h-1, 77.8%) without H2. Detailed investigations also demonstrate the synergistic effect between Pd and VOδ species for enhancing the charge carrier separation and transfer, as well as improving the catalytic activity for O2 reduction and H2O2 production.

Insight into selectivity of photocatalytic methane oxidation to formaldehyde on tungsten trioxide

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been recognized as the most promising photocatalyst for highly selective oxidation of methane (CH4) to formaldehyde (HCHO), but the origin of catalytic activity and the reaction manner remain controversial. Here, we take {001} and {110} facets dominated WO3 as the model photocatalysts. Distinctly, {001} facet can readily achieve 100% selectivity of HCHO via the active site mechanism whereas {110} facet hardly guarantees a high selectivity of HCHO along with many intermediate products via the radical way. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance and theoretical calculations confirm that the competitive chemical adsorption between CH4 and H2O and the different CH4 activation routes on WO3 surface are responsible for diverse CH4 oxidation pathways. The microscopic mechanism elucidation provides the guidance for designing high performance photocatalysts for selective CH4 oxidation.

Direct Photocatalytic Methane Oxidation to Formaldehyde by N Doping Co-Decorated Mixed Crystal TiO2

In this paper, N-doped TiO2 mixed crystals are prepared via direct calcination of TiN for highly selective oxidation of CH4 to HCHO at room temperature. The structures of the prepared TiO2 samples are characterized to be N-doped TiO2 of anatase and rutile mixed crystals. The crystal structures of TiO2 samples are determined by XRD spectra and Raman spectra, while N doping is demonstrated by TEM mapping, ONH inorganic element analysis, and high-resolution XPS results. Significantly, the production rate of HCHO is as high as 23.5 mmol·g-1·h-1 with a selectivity over 90%. Mechanism studies reveal that H2O is the main oxygen source and acts through the formation of ·OH. DFT calculations indicate that the construction of a mixed crystal structure and N-doping modification mainly act by increasing the adsorption capacity of H2O. An efficient photocatalyst was prepared by us to convert CH4 to HCHO with high yield and selectivity, greatly promoting the development of the photocatalytic CH4 conversion study.

Ultrafine Pt Nanoparticles on Defective Tungsten Oxide for Photocatalytic Ethylene Synthesis

The selective conversion of ethane (C2H6) to ethylene (C2H4) under mild conditions is highly wanted, yet very challenging. Herein, it is demonstrated that a Pt/WO3-x catalyst, constructed by supporting ultrafine Pt nanoparticles on the surface of oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide (WO3-x) nanoplates, is efficient and reusable for photocatalytic C2H6 dehydrogenation to produce C2H4 with high selectivity. Specifically, under pure light irradiation, the optimized Pt/WO3-x photocatalyst exhibits C2H4 and H2 yield rates of 291.8 and 373.4 µmol g-1 h-1, respectively, coupled with a small formation of CO (85.2 µmol g-1 h-1) and CH4 (19.0 µmol g-1 h-1), corresponding to a high C2H4 selectivity of 84.9%. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the vacancy-rich WO3-x catalyst enables broad optical harvesting to generate charge carriers by light for working the redox reactions. Meanwhile, the Pt cocatalyst reinforces adsorption of C2H6, desorption of key reaction species, and separation and migration of light-induced charges to promote the dehydrogenation reaction with high productivity and selectivity. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation expose the key intermediates formed on the Pt/WO3-x catalyst during the reaction, which permits the construction of the possible C2H6 dehydrogenation mechanism.

Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Strategies for C(sp3 )-H Activation

Activation of ubiquitous C(sp3 )-H bonds is extremely attractive but remains a great challenge. Heterogeneous photocatalysis offers a promising and sustainable approach for C(sp3 )-H activation and has been fast developing in the past decade. This Minireview focuses on mechanism and strategies for heterogeneous photocatalytic C(sp3 )-H activation. After introducing mechanistic insights, heterogeneous photocatalytic strategies for C(sp3 )-H activation including precise design of active sites, regulation of reactive radical species, improving charge separation and reactor innovations are discussed. In addition, recent advances in C(sp3 )-H activation of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, amines and amides by heterogeneous photocatalysis are summarized. Lastly, challenges and opportunities are outlined to encourage more efforts for the development of this exciting and promising field.

Product Peroxidation Inhibition in Methane Photooxidation into Methanol

Methane photooxidation into methanol offers a practical approach for the generation of high-value chemicals and the efficient storage of solar energy. However, the propensity for C─H bonds in the desired products to cleave more easily than those in methane molecules results in a continuous dehydrogenation process, inevitably leading to methanol peroxidation. Consequently, inhibiting methanol peroxidation is perceived as one of the most formidable challenges in the field of direct conversion of methane to methanol. This review offers a thorough overview of the typical mechanisms involved radical mechanism and active site mechanism and the regulatory methods employed to inhibit product peroxidation in methane photooxidation. Additionally, several perspectives on the future research direction of this crucial field are proposed.

Synergistic Interaction between Metal Single-Atoms and Defective WO3- x Nanosheets for Enhanced Sonodynamic Cancer Therapy

Although metal single-atom (SA)-based nanomaterials are explored as sonosensitizers for sonodynamic therapy (SDT), they normally exhibit poor activities and need to combine with other therapeutic strategies. Herein, the deposition of metal SAs on oxygen vacancy (OV)-rich WO3- x nanosheets to generate a synergistic effect for efficient SDT is reported. Crystalline WO3 and OV-rich WO3- x nanosheets are first prepared by simple calcination of the WO3 ·H2 O nanosheets under an air and N2 atmosphere, respectively. Pt, Cu, Fe, Co, and Ni metal SAs are then deposited on WO3- x nanosheets to obtain metal SA-decorated WO3- x nanocomposites (M-WO3- x ). Importantly, the Cu-WO3- x sonosensitizer exhibits a much higher activity for ultrasound (US)-induced production of reactive oxygen species than that of the WO3- x and Cu SA-decorated WO3 , which is also higher than other M-WO3- x nanosheets. Both the experimental and theoretical results suggest that the excellent SDT performance of the Cu-WO3- x nanosheets should be attributed to the synergistic effect between Cu SAs and WO3- x OVs. Therefore, after polyethylene glycol modification, the Cu-WO3- x can quickly kill cancer cells in vitro and effectively eradicate tumors in vivo under US irradiation. Transcriptome sequencing analysis and further molecular validation suggest that the Cu-WO3- x -mediated SDT-activated apoptosis and TNF signaling pathways are potential drivers of tumor apoptosis induction.

Recent advancement on photocatalytic plastic upcycling

More than 8 billion tons of plastics have been generated since 1950. About 80% of these plastics have been dumped in landfills or went into natural environments, resulting in ever-worsening contamination. Among various strategies for waste plastics processing (e.g., incineration, mechanical recycling, thermochemical conversion and electrocatalytic/photocatalytic techniques), photocatalysis stands out as a cost-effective, environmentally benign and clean technique to upcycle plastic waste at ambient temperature and pressure using solar light. The mild reaction conditions for photocatalysis enable the highly selective conversion of plastic waste into targeted value-added chemicals/fuels. Here, we for the first time summarize the recent development of photocatalytic plastic upcycling based on the chemical composition of photocatalysts (e.g., metal oxides, metal sulfides, non-metals and composites). The pros and cons of various photocatalysts have been critically discussed and summarized. At last, the future challenges and opportunities in this area are presented in this review.

Ethylene Methoxycarbonylation over Heterogeneous Pt1/MoS2 Single-Atom Catalyst: Metal-Support Concerted Catalysis

Ethylene methoxycarbonylation (EMC) to methyl propanoate (MP) is an industrially important reaction and commercially uses a homogeneous Pd-phosphine organometallic complex as the catalyst and corrosive strong acid as the promoter. In this work, we develop a Pt1/MoS2 heterogeneous single-atom catalyst (SAC) which exhibits high activity, selectivity, and good recyclability for EMC reaction without need of any liquid acid. The production rate of MP achieves 0.35 gMP gcat-1 h-1 with MP selectivity of 91.1% at 1 MPa CO, 1 MPa C2H4, and 160 °C, which can be doubled at 2 MPa CO and corresponds to 320.1 molMP molPt-1 h-1, at least 1 order of magnitude higher than the earlier reported heterogeneous catalyst and even comparable to some of homogeneous catalyst. Advanced characterizations and DFT calculations reveal that all the Pt single atoms are located at the Mo vacancies along the Mo edge of the MoS2 nanosheets, forming pocket-like Mo-S-Pt1-S-Mo ensembles with uniform and well-defined structure. Methanol is first adsorbed and dissociated on Mo sites, and the produced H spillovers to the adjacent Pt site forming Pt-H species which then activate ethylene, forming Pt-ethyl species. Meanwhile, CO adsorbed on the other Mo site reacts with the Pt-ethyl species, yielding propionyl species, and this carbonylation is the rate-determining step. The final methoxylation step proceeds via the nucleophilic attack of propionyl species by -OCH3 affording the final product MP. Such a metal-support concerted catalysis enabled by the Mo-S-Pt1-S-Mo multisite ensemble opens a new avenue for SACs to promote the multimolecular reactions that prevail in homogeneous catalysis.

Mechanism-Guided Design of Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction toward Multicarbon Products

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to high value-added multicarbon (C2+) products is an important way to achieve sustainable production of green energy but limited by the low efficiency of catalysts. One fundamental issue lies in the high complexity of catalyst structure and reaction process, making the rational catalyst design and targeted performance optimization a grand challenge. Herein, we performed a mechanism-guided design of photocatalysts for CO2 reduction by using the experimentally reported Cu doped TiO2 (Cu-TiO2) with high C3H8 selectivity and well-defined structure as the prototype. Our mechanistic study highlights three key factors for C3H8 formation, i.e., formation of double O vacancies (Vdi-O) for selectivity, C-C coupling for activity, and Vdi-O recovery for durability. More importantly, Vdi-O formation/recovery and C-C coupling are negatively correlated, indicating that ideal candidates should achieve a balance between oxygen vacancy (VO) formation and C-C coupling. On this basis, TiO2 with the doping of two adjacent Cu atoms (Cu-Cu-TiO2) was designed with enhanced performance for CO2 photoreduction toward C3H8. Furthermore, a simple descriptor (Nμ, "effective d electron number") based on inherent atomic properties was constructed to uncover the underlying causes of the performance variation of different systems. These results provide new insights into the "structure-performance" relation of metal oxide-based photocatalysts, thus offering useful strategies for the rational design of excellent catalysts for CO2 photoreduction.

Visible light photoreforming of greenhouse gases by nano Cu-Al LDH intercalated with urea-derived anions

The accumulation of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere causes global warming. Global efforts are carried out to prevent temperature overshooting and limit the increase in the Earth's surface temperature to 1.5 °C. Carbon dioxide and methane are the largest contributors to global warming. We have synthesized copper-aluminium layered double hydroxide (Cu-Al LDH) catalysts by urea hydrolysis under microwave (MW) irradiation. The effect of MW power, urea concentration, and MII/MIII ratios was studied. The physicochemical properties of the prepared LDH catalysts were characterized by several analysis techniques. The results confirmed the formation of the layered structure with the intercalation of urea-derived anions. The urea-derived anions enhanced the optical and photocatalytic properties of the nano Cu-Al LDH in the visible-light region. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared Cu-Al LDH catalysts was tested for greenhouse gas conversion (CH4, CO2, and H2O) under visible light. The dynamic gas mixture flow can pass through the reactor at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. The results show a high conversion percentage for both CO2 and CH4. The highest converted amounts were 7.48 and 1.02 mmol mL-1 g-1 for CH4 and CO2, respectively, under the reaction conditions. The main product was formaldehyde with high selectivity (>99%). The results also show the stability of the catalysts over several cycles. The current work represents a green chemistry approach for efficient photocatalyst synthesis, visible light utilization, and GHGs' conversion into a valuable product.
