Imaging the electron charge density in monolayer MoS2 at the Ångstrom scale

Recent progresses in transmission electron microscopy studies of two-dimensional ferroelectrics

The rich potential of two-dimensional materials endows them with superior properties suitable for a wide range of applications, thereby attracting substantial interest across various fields. The ongoing trend towards device miniaturization aligns with the development of materials at progressively smaller scales, aiming to achieve higher integration density in electronics. In the realm of nano-scaling ferroelectric phenomena, numerous new two-dimensional ferroelectric materials have been predicted theoretically and subsequently validated through experimental confirmation. However, the capabilities of conventional tools, such as electrical measurements, are limited in providing a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic origins of ferroelectricity and its interactions with structural factors. These factors include stacking, doping, functionalization, and defects. Consequently, the progress of potential applications, such as high-density memory devices, energy conversion systems, sensing technologies, catalysis, and more, is impeded. In this paper, we present a review of recent research that employs advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques for the direct visualization and analysis of ferroelectric domains, domain walls, and other crucial features at the atomic level within two-dimensional materials. We discuss the essential interplay between structural characteristics and ferroelectric properties on the nanoscale, which facilitates understanding of the complex relationships governing their behavior. By doing so, we aim to pave the way for future innovative applications in this field.

Metrology for 2D materials: a perspective review from the international roadmap for devices and systems

The International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) predicts the integration of 2D materials into high-volume manufacturing as channel materials within the next decade, primarily in ultra-scaled and low-power devices. While their widespread adoption in advanced chip manufacturing is evolving, the need for diverse characterization methods is clear. This is necessary to assess structural, electrical, compositional, and mechanical properties to control and optimize 2D materials in mass-produced devices. Although the lab-to-fab transition remains nascent and a universal metrology solution is yet to emerge, rapid community progress underscores the potential for significant advancements. This paper reviews current measurement capabilities, identifies gaps in essential metrology for CMOS-compatible 2D materials, and explores fundamental measurement science limitations when applying these techniques in high-volume semiconductor manufacturing.

Direct Quantifying Charge Transfer by 4D-STEM: A Study on Perfect and Defective Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) offers an attractive approach to simultaneously obtain precise structural determinations and capture details of local electric fields and charge densities. However, accurately extracting quantitative data at the atomic scale poses challenges, primarily due to probe propagation and size-related effects, which may even lead to misinterpretations of qualitative effects. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of electric fields and charge densities in both pristine and defective h-BN flakes. Through a combination of experiments and first-principle simulations, we demonstrate that while precise charge quantification at individual atomic sites is hindered by probe effects, 4D-STEM can directly measure charge transfer phenomena at the monolayer edge with sensitivity down to a few tenths of an electron and a spatial resolution on the order of a few angstroms.

The role of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in unraveling the structure-property relationships of Pt-based fuel cells electrocatalysts

Platinum-based fuel cell electrocatalysts are structured on a nano level in order to extend their active surface area and maximize the utilization of precious and scarce platinum. Their performance is dictated by the atomic arrangement of their surface layers atoms via structure-property relationships. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) are the preferred methods for characterizing these catalysts, due to their capacity to achieve local atomic-level resolutions. Size, morphology, strain and local composition are just some of the properties of Pt-based nanostructures that can be obtained by (S)TEM. Furthermore, advanced methods of (S)TEM are able to provide insights into the quasi-in situ, in situ or even operando stability of these nanostructures. In this review, we present state-of-the-art applications of (S)TEM in the investigation and interpretation of structure-activity and structure-stability relationships.
