Noncontact Microfluidics of Highly Viscous Liquids for Accurate Self-Splitting and Pipetting

Accurate dosing for various liquids, especially for highly viscous liquids, is fundamental in wide-ranging from molecular crosslinking to material processing. Despite droppers or pipettes being widely used as pipetting devices, they are powerless for quantificationally splitting and dosing highly viscous liquids (>100 mPa s) like polymer liquids due to the intertwined macromolecular chains and strong cohesion energy. Here, a highly transparent photopyroelectric slippery (PS) platform is provided to achieve noncontact self-splitting for liquids with viscosity as high as 15 000 mPa s, just with the assistance of sunlight and a cooling source to provide a local temperature difference (ΔT). Moreover, to guarantee the accuracy for pipetting liquids (>80%), the ultrathin MXene film (within a thickness of 20 nm) is self-assembled as the photo-thermal layers, overcoming the trade-off between transparency and photothermal property. Compared with traditional pipetting strategies (≈1.3% accuracy for pipetting polymer liquids), this accurate microfluidic chip shows great potential in adhesive systems (bonding strength, twice than using the droppers or pipettes).

Rod-Shaped Liquid Plasticine as Cuttable Minireactor for Photodynamic Therapy of Tumors

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive approach for cancer treatment. Enhancing its efficacy and understanding its absorption-induced attenuation are significant while the solutions are limited, particularly for the latter. In this study, a rod-shaped liquid plasticine (LP), comprised of a tumor cell solution encased by a nanoparticle monolayer, is used to serve as a powerful minireactor for addressing these issues. The channel structure, openness, and cuttability of the LP reactor are exploited for providing benefits to PDT. The resulting PDT efficacy is several times higher than those from droplet reactors with common spherical shapes. The attenuation law, which is fundamental in PDT yet poorly understood due to the lack of experimental approaches, is preliminarily uncovered here from the perspective of in vitro experiments by using the LP's cuttability, affording quantitative understanding on this difficult subject. These findings provide insights into the widely-concerned topics in PDT, and highlight the great potential of an LP reactor in offering innovation power for the biochemical and biomedical arenas.

Infinite Self-Propulsion of Circularly On/Discharged Droplets

Self-propulsion of droplets in a controlled and long path at a high-speed is crucial for organic synthesis, pathological diagnosis and programable lab-on-a-chip. To date, extensive efforts have been made to achieve droplet self-propulsion by asymmetric gradient, yet, existing structural, chemical, or charge density gradients can only last for a while (<50 mm). Here, this work designs a symmetrical waved alternating potential (WAP) on a superhydrophobic surface to charge or discharge the droplets during the transport process. By deeply studying the motion mechanisms for neutral droplets and charged droplets, the circularly on/discharged droplets achieve the infinite self-propulsion (>1000 mm) with an ultrahigh velocity of meters per second. In addition, after permutation and combination of two motion styles of the droplets, it can be competent for more interesting work, such as liquid diode and liquid logic gate. Being assembled into a microfluidic chip, the strategy would be applied in chemical synthesis, cell culture, and diagnostic kits.

Study on a Noncontact Microdroplet Separation Method under the Action of Corona Discharge

Precision manipulation of various liquids is essential in many fields such as various thermal, optical, and medical applications. This paper proposes an effective noncontact microdroplet separation method that is based on the action of corona discharge. A blade-plate electrode is constructed to generate an ionic wind, thereby enabling the droplet to be separated according to the shape of the blade electrode. Line, curve, S-shape, and parallel separation of the droplet can be realized in the experiment setup. Furthermore, experiment parameters, including the driving voltage, cutting speed, the distance of the upper and lower electrodes, cutting depth, etc., are discussed. Experimental results show that the proposed method is feasible and effective and can be used in application scenarios that require precise manipulation of droplets.

Liquid marbles: review of recent progress in physical properties, formation techniques, and lab-in-a-marble applications in microreactors and biosensors

Liquid marbles (LMs) are nonsticking droplets whose surfaces are covered with low-wettability particles. Owing to their high mobility, shape reconfigurability, and widely accessible liquid/particle possibilities, the research on LMs has flourished since 2001. Their physical properties, fabrication mechanisms, and functionalisation capabilities indicate their potential for various applications. This review summarises the fundamental properties of LMs, the recent advances (mainly works published in 2020-2023) in the concept of LMs, physical properties, formation methods, LM-templated material design, and biochemical applications. Finally, the potential development and variations of LMs are discussed.

High-Performance Waterproof, Breathable, and Radiative Cooling Membranes Based on Nanoarchitectured Fiber/Meshworks

Smart membranes with protection and thermal-wet comfort are highly demanded in various fields. Nevertheless, the existing membranes suffer from a tradeoff dilemma of liquid resistance and moisture permeability, as well as poor thermoregulating ability. Herein, a novel strategy, based on the synchronous occurrence of humidity-induced electrospinning and electromeshing, is developed to synthesize a dual-network structured nanofiber/mesh for personal comfort management. Manipulating the ejection, deformation, and phase separation of spinning jets and charged droplets enables the creation of nanofibrous membranes composed of radiative cooling nanofibers and 2D nanostructured meshworks. With a combination of a true-nanoscale fiber (∼70 nm) in 2D meshworks, a small pore size (0.84 μm), and a superhydrophobic surface (151.9°), the smart membranes present high liquid repellency (95.6 kPa), improved breathability (4.05 kg m-2 d-1), and remarkable cooling performance (7.9 °C cooler than commercial cotton fabrics). This strategy opens up a pathway to the design of advanced smart textiles for personal protection.
