XAT-Catalysis for Intramolecular Biaryl Synthesis

Radical ipso-substitution offers an alternative to organometallic approaches for biaryl synthesis, but usually requires stoichiometric reagents such as tributyltin hydride. Here, we demonstrate that visible light photoredox catalysis can be used for ipso-biaryl synthesis, via a halogen-atom transfer (XAT) regime. Using amide substrates that promote ipso- over unwanted ortho-addition, we demonstrate smooth biaryl formation with no constraint on the electronic character of the migrating arene ring. The photoreaction can be combined in one operation to achieve a formal arylation of the inert aniline C-N bond.

A Stoichiometric Haloform Coupling for Ester Synthesis with Secondary Alcohols

The haloform reaction from methyl ketones to carboxylic acids is one of the oldest known synthetic organic reactions, which has been used in myriad applications over the decades. The corresponding reaction to produce esters is, however, less developed, as the reaction is generally limited to simple, primary alcohols that are used in solvent-level quantities, thereby restricting the complexity of esters that can be directly formed. Herein, we detail the development of a general ester-forming haloform coupling reaction using one equivalent of alcohol. Mechanistic and kinetic modelling studies demonstrated that the key intermediates are formed under equilibrium, which facilitated the development of conditions that are amenable to secondary alcohols.

Recent Progress on the Synthesis of Bipyridine Derivatives

Bipyridine and related compounds are starting materials or precursors for a variety of valuable substances such as biologically active molecules, ligands for catalysts, photosensitizers, viologens, and supramolecular architectures. Thus, it is important to classify their synthesis methods and understand their characteristics. Representative examples include methods using homo and heterocoupling of pyridine derivatives in the presence of a catalyst. Because bipyridine compounds strongly coordinate with metal centers, a decrease in catalytic activity and yield is often observed in the reaction system. To address this issue, this review provides insights into advances over the last ~30 years in bipyridine synthesis using metal complexes under both homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions. Moreover, strategies for bipyridine synthesis involving sulfur and phosphorous compounds are examined. These alternative pathways offer promising avenues for overcoming the challenges associated with traditional catalysis methods, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the synthesis landscape.

Direct alkylation of quinoxalinones with electron-deficient alkenes enabled by a sequential paired electrolysis

The metal-free alkylation of N-heterocycles with alkenes has remained a synthetic challenge. We report here the successful implementation of metal-free alkylation of quinoxalinones with electron-deficient alkenes enabled by a sequential paired electrolysis. This protocol provides a mechanistically distinct approach to prepare a variety of C-3 alkylated quinoxalinones that are otherwise quite difficult to synthesize by other means.
