A chemical perspective on the chiral induced spin selectivity effect

This review discusses opportunities in chemistry that are enabled by the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. First, the review begins with a brief overview of the seminal studies on CISS. Next, we discuss different chiral material systems whose properties can be tailored through chemical means, with a special emphasis on hybrid organic-inorganic layered materials that exhibit some of the largest spin filtering properties to date. Then, we discuss the promise of CISS for chemical reactions and enantioseparation before concluding.

Plasmonic Pt-PPCN/TiN Ohmic Junction for Photo-Thermo Catalytic Hydrogen Production

The rational design of photocatalysts for improving the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen is a promising route for achieving carbon neutrality. Herein, we couple plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) with highly crystalline potassium-doped polymeric carbon nitride (PPCN) to construct a PPCN/TiN ohmic junction. Such an ohmic junction not only broadens the absorption spectrum but also inhibits the recombination of electrons and holes. In addition, Pt nanoparticles are introduced into this ohmic junction to form plasmonic Pt-PPCN/TiN, improving the capture of hot electrons generated by TiN and thereby promoting the dissociation of the O-H bond in H2O. The energy barrier decreases from 0.7 to 0.2 eV. Enhanced separation of carrier, activation of water molecules, and capture of hot electrons are jointly promoting photo-thermo catalytic hydrogen production. Therefore, under full-spectrum irradiation, the hydrogen production rate of Pt-PPCN/TiN reaches 19 085 μmol g-1 h-1. This novel plasmonic photocatalyst is promising for full-spectrum photo-thermo catalytic hydrogen production.

Strong coupling of an epsilon-near-zero mode to a chiral plasmon

The reconfigurable chiroptical effect is highly desirable for spin photonics, chiral spectroscopy, and photocatalysis due to its merits for dynamic and broadband applications. The coupling of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode to a chiral plasmon is expected to enable active and effective manipulation of the chiroptical effect but remains unexplored. Here we, for the first time to our knowledge, propose and demonstrate the strong coupling of an ENZ mode to a chiral plasmon by using a hybrid system composed of two identical vertically placed gold nanorods and an in-between ENZ film. An analytical three-oscillator model combined with numerical simulations is established to study the coupling mechanism, which predicts a Rabi splitting up to 240 meV with an ENZ film thickness of 60 nm in circular dichroism.

Superoxide radicals mediated by high-spin Fe catalysis for organic wastewater treatment

Water resources are indispensable basic resources and important environmental carriers; the presence of organic contaminants in wastewater poses considerable risks to the health of both humans and ecosystems. Although the Fenton-like reactions using H2O2 as the oxidant to destroy organic pollutants are attractive, there are still challenges in improving reaction activity under neutral or even alkaline conditions. Herein, we designed a H2O2 activation pathway with O2•- as the main active species and elucidated that the spin interaction between Fe sites and coordinated O atoms effectively promotes the generation of the key intermediate Fe-*OOH. Furthermore, we successfully captured and analyzed the Fe-*OOH intermediate by in situ Raman spectroscopy. When applying FBOB to a continuous-flow reactor, CIP removal efficiency remained at around 90% within 600 min of continuous operation, achieving excellent efficiency, stability, and pH tolerance in removing pollutants.

Vacancy Engineering in 2D Transition Metal Chalcogenide Photocatalyst: Structure Modulation, Function and Synergy Application

Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are widely used in photocatalytic fields such as hydrogen evolution, nitrogen fixation, and pollutant degradation due to their suitable bandgaps, tunable electronic and optical properties, and strong reducing ability. The unique 2D malleability structure provides a pre-designed platform for customizable structures. The introduction of vacancy engineering makes up for the shortcomings of photocorrosion and limited light response and provides the greatest support for TMCs in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics in photocatalysis. This work reviews the effect of vacancy engineering on photocatalytic performance based on 2D semiconductor TMCs. The characteristics of vacancy introduction strategies are summarized, and the development of photocatalysis of vacancy engineering TMCs materials in energy conversion, degradation, and biological applications is reviewed. The contribution of vacancies in the optical range and charge transfer kinetics is also discussed from the perspective of structure manipulation. Vacancy engineering not only controls and optimizes the structure of the TMCs, but also improves the optical properties, charge transfer, and surface properties. The synergies between TMCs vacancy engineering and atomic doping, other vacancies, and heterojunction composite techniques are discussed in detail, followed by a summary of current trends and potential for expansion.

Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity Enables New Breakthrough in Electrochemical and Photoelectrochemical Reactions

To facilitate the transition from a carbon-energy-dependent society to a sustainable society, conventional engineering strategies, which encounter limitations associated with intrinsic material properties, should undergo the paradigm shift. From a theoretical viewpoint, the spin-dependent feature of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) reveals the potential of a spin-polarization strategy in enhancing the performance of electrochemical (EC) reactions. The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) phenomenon attracts unprecedented attention owing to its potential utility in achieving novel breakthroughs. This paper starts with the experimental results aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the spin-dependent OER focusing on the EC system based on the CISS phenomenon. The applicability of spin-polarization to EC system is verified through various analytical methodologies to clarify the theoretical groundwork and mechanisms underlying the spin-dependent reaction pathway. The discussion is then extended to effective spin-control strategies in photoelectrochemical system based on the CISS effect. Exploring the influence of spin-state control on the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects, this perspective also discusses the effect of spin polarization induced by the CISS phenomenon on spin-dependent OER. Lastly, future directions for enhancing the performance of spin-dependent redox systems are discussed, including expansion to various chemical reactions and the development of materials with spin-control capabilities.

Fluorinated Organic Cations Derived Chiral 2D Perovskite Enabling Enhanced Spin-Dependent Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Chirality-induced spin selectivity observed in chiral 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite holds promise to achieve spin-dependent electrochemistry. However, conventional chiral 2D perovskites suffer from low conductivity and hygroscopicity, limiting electrochemical performance and operational stability. Here, a cutting-edge material design is introduced to develop a stable and efficient chiral perovskite-based spin polarizer by employing fluorinated chiral cation. The fluorination approach effectively promotes the charge carrier transport along the out-of-plane direction by mitigating the dielectric confinement effect within the multi-quantum well-structured 2D perovskite. Integrating the fluorinated cation incorporated spin polarizer with BiVO4 photoanode considerably boosts the photocurrent density while reducing overpotential through a spin-dependent oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, the hydrophobic nature of fluorine in spin polarizer endows operational stability to the photoanode, extending the durability by 280% as compared to the device with non-fluorinated spin polarizer.

Intense interaction between biochar/g-C3N4 promotes the photocatalytic performance of heterojunction catalysts

In recent decades, environmental protection and energy issues have gained significant attention, and the development of efficient, environmentally friendly catalysts has become especially crucial for the advancement of photocatalytic technology. This study employs the sintering method to produce biochar. A hybrid photocatalyst for the degradation of RHB under visible light was prepared by loading varying proportions of biochar onto g-C3N4 using ultrasonic technology. Among them, 2% CGCD (2% biochar/g-C3N4) achieved a degradation rate of 91.3% for RHB after 30 minutes of visible light exposure, which was more than 25% higher than GCD (g-C3N4), and exhibited a higher photocurrent intensity and lower impedance value. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity is primarily attributed to the increased utilization efficiency of visible light and the electron transfer channel effect from a minor amount of biochar, effectively reducing the recombination of photo-generated charge carriers on the g-C3N4 surface, thereby significantly improving photocatalytic activity. The degradation of RHB is synergistically mediated by O2 -, h+ (photo-generated holes), and ˙OH. The free radical capture experiment indicates that O2 - and ˙OH are the primary active components, followed by h+.

Enhanced Replenishment of Active Lattice Oxygen Using Chiral Copper Oxide

Effective catalytic performance of the transition metal oxide is attributed to high specific surface areas, abundant surface oxygen atoms, and balanced valence ratios. Although the chirality of the transition metal has attracted attention, most studies have focused on optical application. A few chiral transition metal oxides were used as electrocatalysts and photocatalysts. The influence of the chiral catalysts on the thermal catalysis process has been less explored. In this study, Mn-loaded chiral (M/l-CuO and M/d-CuO) and achiral CuO (M/a-CuO) were synthesized and compared in the catalytic oxidization of toluene. Spectrally analyzed Mn was well-dispersed on both chiral and achiral CuO. l-CuO and d-CuO showed nanoflower-like chirality. The angles between each (001) plane of CuO were the source of chirality. The toluene turnover frequency (TOF) of the samples was in the order of Mn/d-CuO (5.6 × 10-5 s-1) > Mn/l-CuO (4.4 × 10-5 s-1) > Mn/a-CuO (3.2 × 10-5 s-1) at 240 °C, consistent with the order of the oxygen replenishment rate. The as-prepared catalysts had similar ratios of lattice oxygen/surface adsorbed oxygen, Mn3+/Mn4+, and Cu+/Cu2+. A higher TOF was attributed to chirality, which increased the lattice oxygen replenishment speed from the gaseous phase to the solid surface. Our study indicates gas-solid catalysis from a structure-activity viewpoint.

Engineering Spatially Adjacent Redox Sites with Synergistic Spin Polarization Effect to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Methanation

The integration of oxidation and reduction half-reactions to amplify their synergy presents a considerable challenge in CO2 photoconversion. Addressing this challenge requires the construction of spatially adjacent redox sites while suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This study introduces an innovative approach that utilizes spatial synergy to enable synergistic redox reactions within atomic proximity and employs spin polarization to inhibit charge recombination. We incorporate Mn into Co3O4 as a catalyst, in which Mn sites tend to enrich holes as water activation sites, while adjacent Co sites preferentially capture electrons to activate CO2, forming a spatial synergy. The direct H transfer from H2O at Mn sites facilitates the formation of *COOH on adjacent Co sites with remarkably favorable thermodynamic energy. Notably, the incorporation of Mn induces spin polarization in the system, significantly suppressing the recombination of photogenerated charges at redox sites. This effect is further enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. By synergizing spatial synergy and spin polarization, Mn/Co3O4 exhibits a CH4 production rate of 23.4 μmol g-1 h-1 from CO2 photoreduction, showcasing a 28.8 times enhancement over Co3O4. This study first introduces spin polarization to address charge recombination issues at spatially adjacent redox sites, offering novel insights for synergistic redox photocatalytic systems.

Twinned crystal Cd0.9Zn0.1S/MoO3 nanorod S-scheme heterojunctions as promising photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution

Leveraging solar energy through photocatalytic hydrogen production from water stands out as one of the most promising approaches to address the energy and environmental challenges. The choice of catalyst profoundly influences the outcomes of photocatalytic reactions, and constructing heterojunctions has emerged as a widely applied strategy to overcome the limitations associated with single-phase photocatalysts. MoO3, renowned for its high chemical stability, encounters issues such as low photocatalytic efficiency and fast recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. To tackle these challenges, the morphology of MoO3 has been controlled to form nanorods, simultaneously suppressing the aggregation of the catalyst and increasing the number of surface-active sites. Moreover, to facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, Cd0.9Zn0.1S nanoparticles with a twin crystal structure are deposited on the surface of MoO3, establishing an S-scheme heterojunction. Experimental findings demonstrate that the synergistic effects arising from the well-defined morphology and interface interactions extend the absorption range to visible light response, improve charge transfer activity, and prolong the lifetime of charge carriers. Consequently, Cd0.9Zn0.1S/MoO3 S-scheme heterojunctions exhibit outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen production performance (3909.79 μmol g-1 h-1) under visible light irradiation, surpassing that of MoO3 by nearly nine fold.

Effects of external light in the magnetic field-modulated photocatalytic reactions in a microfluidic chip reactor

Photocatalytic reactions and their magnetic-field enhancement present significant potential for practical applications in green chemistry. This work presents the mutual enhancement of plasmonic photocatalytic reaction by externally applied magnetic field and plasmonic enhancement in a micro optofluidic chip reactor. The tiny gold (Au) nanoparticles of only a few atoms fixed on the surface of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles lead to mutually boosted enhancement photocatalytic reactions under an external magnetic field and plasmonic effects. The dominant factor of adding green light to the photocatalytic reaction leads to the understanding that it is a plasmonic effect. The positive results of adding ethanol alcohol (EA) in the experiments further present that it is a hot electron dominant path photocatalytic reaction that is positively enhanced by both the external magnetic field and plasmonic effects. This work offers great potential for utilizing magnetic field enhancement in plasmonic photocatalytic reactions.

Photocatalytic activity of dual defect modified graphitic carbon nitride is robust to tautomerism: machine learning assisted ab initio quantum dynamics

Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) is a popular metal-free polymer for sustainable energy applications due to its unique structure and semiconductor properties. Dopants and defects are used to tune GCN, and dual defect modified GCN exhibits superior properties and enhanced photocatalytic efficiency in comparison to pristine or single defect GCN. We employ a multistep approach combining time-dependent density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) with machine learning (ML) to investigate coupled structural and electronic dynamics in GCN over a nanosecond timescale, comparable to and exceeding the lifetimes of photo-generated charge carriers and photocatalytic events. Although frequent hydrogen hopping transitions occur among four tautomeric structures, the electron-hole separation and recombination processes are only weakly sensitive to the tautomerism. The charge separated state survives for about 10 ps, sufficiently long to enable photocatalysis. The employed ML-NAMD methodology provides insights into rare events that can influence excited state dynamics in the condensed phase and nanoscale materials and extends NAMD simulations from pico- to nanoseconds. The ab initio quantum dynamics simulation provides a detailed atomistic mechanism of photoinduced evolution of charge carriers in GCN and rationalizes how GCN remains photo-catalytically active despite its multiple isomeric and tautomeric forms.

Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity

Since the initial landmark study on the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in 1999, considerable experimental and theoretical efforts have been made to understand the physical underpinnings and mechanistic features of this interesting phenomenon. As first formulated, the CISS effect refers to the innate ability of chiral materials to act as spin filters for electron transport; however, more recent experiments demonstrate that displacement currents arising from charge polarization of chiral molecules lead to spin polarization without the need for net charge flow. With its identification of a fundamental connection between chiral symmetry and electron spin in molecules and materials, CISS promises profound and ubiquitous implications for existing technologies and new approaches to answering age old questions, such as the homochiral nature of life. This review begins with a discussion of the different methods for measuring CISS and then provides a comprehensive overview of molecules and materials known to exhibit CISS-based phenomena before proceeding to identify structure-property relations and to delineate the leading theoretical models for the CISS effect. Next, it identifies some implications of CISS in physics, chemistry, and biology. The discussion ends with a critical assessment of the CISS field and some comments on its future outlook.

Spin Polarization: A New Frontier in Efficient Photocatalysis for Environmental Purification and Energy Conversion

As a promising strategy to improve photocatalytic efficiency, spin polarization has attracted enormous attention in recent years, which could be involved in various steps of photoreaction. The Pauli repulsion principle and the spin selection rule dictate that the behavior of two electrons in a spatial eigenstate is based on their spin states, and this fact opens up a new avenue for manipulating photocatalytic efficiency. In this review, recent advances in modulating the photocatalytic activity with spin polarization are systematically summarized. Fundamental insights into the influence of spin-polarization effects on photon absorption, carrier separation, and migration, and the behaviors of reaction-related substances from the photon uptake to reactant desorption are highlighted and discussed in detail, and various photocatalytic applications for environmental purification and energy conversion are presented. This review is expected to deliver a timely overview of the recent developments in spin-polarization-modulated photocatalysis for environmental purification and energy conversion in terms of their practical applications.

Near-Infrared Chiroptical Activity Titanium Dioxide Supraparticles with Circularly Polarized Light Induced Antibacterial Activity

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has attracted significant attention in the fields of antibacterial activity and pollutant degradation due to its well-known photocatalytic properties. However, the application of TiO2 is significantly limited by its large band gap width, which only allows excitation by ultraviolet light below 400 nm. Here, we propose the use of surface chiral functionalization of TiO2 to tune its band gap width, thus enabling it to be excited by near-infrared-region light (NIR), resulting in the effective separation of electron-hole pairs. By controlling the solvent polarity and forming numerous weak interactions (such as hydrogen bonding) between chiral ligands and TiO2, we successfully prepared chiral TiO2 superparticles (SPs) that exhibited a broad circular dichroism (CD) absorption at 792 nm. Under circularly polarized light (CPL) at 808 nm, the chiral SPs induced the separation of electron-hole pairs in TiO2, thus generating hydroxyl and singlet oxygen radicals. Antibacterial tests under CPL in NIR showed that the chiral TiO2 SPs exhibited excellent antibacterial performance, with inhibition rates of 99.4% and 100% against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. Recycling-reuse experiments and biocompatibility evaluation of the material demonstrated that the chiral TiO2 SPs are stable and safe antibacterial materials, thus indicating the potential application of chiral TiO2 SPs in antibacterial aspects of medical implants.

Chiral Quantum Materials: When Chemistry Meets Physics

Chirality is a fundamental property of nature with relevance in biochemistry and physics, particularly in the field of catalysis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying chirality transfer is crucial for advancing the knowledge of chiral-related catalysis. Chiral quantum materials with intriguing chirality-dependent electronic properties, such as spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and exotic spin/orbital angular momentum (SAM/OAM), open novel avenues for linking solid-state topologies with chiral catalysis. In this review, the growth of topological homochiral crystals (THCs) is described, and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen electrocatalysis, and asymmetric catalysis are summarized. A possible link between chirality-dependent electronic properties and heterogeneous catalysis is discussed. Finally, existing challenges in this field are highlighted, and a brief outlook on the impact of THCs on the overarching chemical-physical research is presented.
