Blue organic light-emitting diode with a turn-on voltage of 1.47 V

Efficient Spin Interconversion by Molecular Conformation Dynamics of a Triplet Pair for Photon Up-Conversion in an Amorphous Solid

Solid-state materials with improved light-to-energy conversions in organic photovoltaics and in optoelectronics are expected to be developed by realizing efficient triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) by manipulating the spin conversion processes to the singlet state. In this study, we elucidate the spin conversion mechanism for delayed fluorescence by TTA from a microscopic view of the molecular conformations. We examine the time evolution of the electron spin polarization of the triplet-pair state (TT state) in an amorphous solid-state system exhibiting highly efficient up-conversion emission by using time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance. We clarified that the spin-state population of the singlet TT increased through the spin interconversion from triplet and quintet TT states during exciton diffusion with random orientation dynamics between the two triplets for the modulation of the exchange interaction, achieving a high quantum yield of up-conversion emission. This understanding provides us with a guide for the development of efficient light-to-energy conversion devices utilizing TTA.

Unlocking Structurally Nontraditional Naphthyridine-Based Electron-Transporting Materials with C-H Activation-Annulation

The inherent benefits of C-H activation have given rise to innovative approaches in designing organic optoelectronic molecules that depart from conventional methods. While theoretical calculations have suggested the suitability of the 2,6-naphthyridine scaffold for electron transport materials (ETMs) in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), the existing synthetic methodologies have proven to be insufficient for the construction of multiple arylated and fully aryl-substituted molecules. Herein, we present a solution for the synthesis of 2,6-naphthyridine derivatives, with the rhodium-catalyzed consecutive C-H activation-annulation process of fumaric acid with alkynes standing as the pivotal step within this strategy. The ETMs, purposefully designed and synthesized based on the 2,6-naphthyridine framework, exhibit an impressively high glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 282 °C and high electron mobility (μe), setting a new benchmark for ETMs in OLEDs with a μe exceeding 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1. These materials prove to be versatile ETM candidates suitable for red, green, and blue phosphorescent OLED devices.

Optical properties and exciton transfer between N-heterocyclic carbene iridium(III) complexes for blue light-emitting diode applications from first principles

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium(III) complexes are considered as promising candidates for blue emitters in organic light-emitting diodes. They can play the roles of the emitter as well as of electron and hole transporters in the same emission layer. We investigate optical transitions in such complexes with account of geometry and electronic structure changes upon excitation or charging and exciton transfer between the complexes from first principles. It is shown that excitation of NHC iridium complexes is accompanied by a large reorganization energy ∼0.7 eV and a significant loss in the oscillator strength, which should lead to low exciton diffusion. Calculations with account of spin-orbit coupling reveal a small singlet-triplet splitting ∼0.1 eV, whereas the oscillator strength for triplet excitations is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than for the singlet ones. The contributions of the Förster and Dexter mechanisms are analyzed via the explicit integration of transition densities. It is shown that for typical distances between emitter complexes in the emission layer, the contribution of the Dexter mechanism should be negligible compared to the Förster mechanism. At the same time, the ideal dipole approximation, although giving the correct order of the exciton coupling, fails to reproduce the result taking into account spatial distribution of the transition density. For charged NHC complexes, we find a number of optical transitions close to the emission peak of the blue emitter with high exciton transfer rates that can be responsible for exciton-polaron quenching. The nature of these transitions is analyzed.
