Ultrafast energy transfer between π-stacked aromatic rings upon inner-valence ionization

Three-body deprotonation fragmentation dynamics of C6H63+ induced by electron-impact ionization

The three-body fragmentation dynamics of benzene trications C6H63+ induced by 200 eV electron-impact produced by a photoemission cathode is investigated. All three fragment ions are detected in coincidence, and their momentum vectors are determined by employing a COLTRIMS reaction microscope. The detailed kinematical information of three deprotonation fragmentation channels of H+ + C3H2+ + C3H3+, H+ + C2H3+ + C4H2+, and H+ + C2H2+ + C4H3+ are obtained. By analyzing the momentum and energy correlation spectra among all the three fragment ions, we find that all the three channels are primarily generated by sequential fragmentation processes. Each channel has two deprotonation pathways, corresponding to proton emission in the first or second step of sequential fragmentation, respectively. These results provide insight into the mechanisms and dynamics of deprotonation and ring-breaking reactions in the three-body fragmentation processes of aromatic ring molecules.

Ultra-High Proportion of Grain Boundaries in Zinc Metal Anode Spontaneously Inhibiting Dendrites Growth

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are an attractive electrochemical energy storage solution for their budget and safe properties. However, dendrites and uncontrolled side reactions in anodes detract the cycle life and energy density of the batteries. Grain boundaries in metals are generally considered as the source of the above problems but we present a diverse result. This study introduces an ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries on zinc electrodes through femtosecond laser bombardment to enhance stability of zinc metal/electrolyte interface. The ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries promotes the homogenization of zinc growth potential, to achieve uniform nucleation and growth, thereby suppressing dendrite formation. Additionally, the abundant active sites mitigate the side reactions during the electrochemical process. Consequently, the 15 μm Fs-Zn||MnO2 pouch cell achieves an energy density of 249.4 Wh kg-1 and operates for over 60 cycles at a depth-of-discharge of 23 %. The recognition of the favorable influence exerted by UP-GBs paves a new way for other metal batteries.

Computer-aided molecular design and optimization of potent inhibitors disrupting APC‒Asef interaction

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. At initial diagnosis, approximately 20% of patients are diagnosed with metastatic CRC (mCRC). Although the APC‒Asef interaction is a well-established target for mCRC therapy, the discovery and development of effective and safe drugs for mCRC patients remains an urgent and challenging endeavor. In this study, we identified a novel structural scaffold based on MAI inhibitors, the first-in-class APC‒Asef inhibitors we reported previously. ONIOM model-driven optimizations of the N-terminal cap and experimental evaluations of inhibitory activity were performed, and 24-fold greater potency was obtained with the best inhibitor compared to the parental compound. In addition, the cocrystal structure validated that the two-layer π‒π stacking interactions were essential for inhibitor stabilization in the bound state. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that novel inhibitors suppressed lung metastasis in CRC by disrupting the APC‒Asef interaction. These results provide an intrinsic structural basis to further explore drug-like molecules for APC‒Asef-mediated CRC therapy.

Revealing the Role of N Heteroatoms in Noncovalent Aromatic Interactions by Ultrafast Intermolecular Coulombic Decay

Despite the widely recognized importance of noncovalent interactions involving aromatic rings in many fields, our understanding of the underlying forces and structural patterns, especially the impact of heteroaromaticity, is still incomplete. Here, we investigate the relaxation processes that follow inner-valence ionization in a range of molecular dimers involving various combinations of benzene, pyridine, and pyrimidine, which initiate an ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay process. Multiparticle coincidence momentum spectroscopy, combined with ab initio calculations, enables us to explore the principal orientations of these fundamental dimers and, thus, to elucidate the influence of N heteroatoms on the relative preference of the aromatic π-stacking, H-bonding, and CH-π interactions and their dependence on the number of nitrogen atoms in the rings. Our studies reveal a sensitive tool for the structural imaging of molecular complexes and provide a more complete understanding of the effects of N heteroatoms on the noncovalent aromatic interactions at the molecular level.

Molecular Ionization Dissociation Induced by Interatomic Coulombic Decay in an ArCH_{4}-Electron Collision System

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) is a significant fragmentation mechanism observed in weakly bound systems. It has been widely accepted that ICD-induced molecular fragmentation occurs through a two-step process, involving ICD as the first step and dissociative-electron attachment (DEA) as the second step. In this study, we conducted a fragmentation experiment of ArCH_{4} by electron impact, utilizing the coincident detection of one electron and two ions. In addition to the well-known decay pathway that induces pure ionization of CH_{4}, we observed a new channel where ICD triggers the ionization dissociation of CH_{4}, resulting in the cleavage of the C-H bond and the formation of the CH_{3}^{+} and H ion pair. The high efficiency of this channel, as indicated by the relative yield of the Ar^{+}/CH_{3}^{+} ion pair, agrees with the theoretical prediction [L. S. Cederbaum, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8964 (2020).JPCLCD1948-718510.1021/acs.jpclett.0c02259; Y. C. Chiang et al., Phys. Rev. A 100, 052701 (2019).PLRAAN2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.100.052701]. These results suggest that ICD can directly break covalent bonds with high efficiency, bypassing the need for DEA. This finding introduces a novel approach to enhance the fragmentation efficiency of molecules containing covalent bonds, such as DNA backbone.

Prebiotic chemical origin of biomolecular complementarity

The early Earth, devoid of the protective stratospheric ozone layer, must have sustained an ambient prebiotic physicochemical medium intensified by the co-existence of shortwave UV photons and very low energy electrons (vLEEs). Consequently, only intrinsically stable molecules against these two co-existing molecular destructors must have proliferated and thereby chemically evolved into the advanced molecules of life. Based on this view, we examined the stability inherent in nucleobases and their complementary pairs as resistance to the molecular damaging effects of shortwave UV photons and vLEEs. This leads to the conclusion that nucleobases could only proliferated as their complementary pairs under the unfavorable prebiotic conditions on early Earth. The complementary base pairing not only enhances but consolidates the intrinsic stability of nucleobases against short-range UV photons, vLEEs, and possibly many as-yet-unknown deleterious agents co-existed in the prebiotic conditions of the early Earth. In short, complementary base pairing is a manifestation of chemical evolution in the unfavorable prebiotic medium created by the absence of the stratospheric ozone layer.

Directly imaging excited state-resolved transient structures of water induced by valence and inner-shell ionisation

Real-time imaging of transient structure of the electronic excited state is fundamentally critical to understand and control ultrafast molecular dynamics. The ejection of electrons from the inner-shell and valence level can lead to the population of different excited states, which trigger manifold ultrafast relaxation processes, however, the accurate imaging of such electronic state-dependent structural evolutions is still lacking. Here, by developing the laser-induced electron recollision-assisted Coulomb explosion imaging approach and molecular dynamics simulations, snapshots of the vibrational wave-packets of the excited (A) and ground states (X) of D2O+ are captured simultaneously with sub-10 picometre and few-femtosecond precision. We visualise that θDOD and ROD are significantly increased by around 50∘ and 10 pm, respectively, within approximately 8 fs after initial ionisation for the A state, and the ROD further extends 9 pm within 2 fs along the ground state of the dication in the present condition. Moreover, the ROD can stretch more than 50 pm within 5 fs along autoionisation state of dication. The accuracies of the results are limited by the simulations. These results provide comprehensive structural information for studying the fascinating molecular dynamics of water, and pave the way towards to make a movie of excited state-resolved ultrafast molecular dynamics and light-induced chemical reaction.

Observation of Nuclear Wave-Packet Interference in Ultrafast Interatomic Energy Transfer

We report the experimental observation of quantum interference in the nuclear wave-packet dynamics driving ultrafast excitation-energy transfer in argon dimers below the threshold of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD). Using time-resolved photoion-photoion coincidence spectroscopy and quantum dynamics simulations, we reveal that the electronic relaxation dynamics of the inner-valence 3s hole on one atom leading to a 4s or 4p excitation on the other one is influenced by nuclear quantum dynamics in the initial state, giving rise to a deep, periodic modulation on the kinetic-energy-release (KER) spectra of the coincident Ar^{+}-Ar^{+} ion pairs. Moreover, the time-resolved KER spectra show characteristic fingerprints of quantum interference effects during the energy-transfer process. Our findings pave the way to elucidating quantum-interference effects in ultrafast charge- and energy-transfer dynamics in more complex systems, such as molecular clusters and solvated molecules.

Dynamics of Hydrogen Bond Breaking Induced by Outer-Valence Intermolecular Coulombic Decay

The photoexcitation of weakly bound complexes can lead to several decay pathways, depending on the nature of the potential energy surfaces. Upon excitation of a chromophore in a weakly bound complex, ionization of its neighbor upon energy transfer can occur due to a unique relaxation process known as intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD), a phenomenon of renewed focus owing to its relevance in biological systems. Herein, we report the evidence for outer-valence ICD induced by multiphoton excitation by near-ultraviolet radiation of 4.4 eV photons, hitherto unknown in molecular systems. In the binary complexes of 2,6-difluorophenylacetylene with aliphatic amines, a resonant two-photon excitation localized on the 2,6-difluorophenylacetylene chromophore results in the formation of an amine cation following an outer-valence ICD process. The unique trends in experimentally observed translational energy distribution profiles of the amine cations following hydrogen bond dissociation, analyzed with the help of electronic structure and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, revealed the presence of a delicate interplay of roaming dynamics, methyl-rotor dynamics, and binding energy.

Sequential mechanism in H3+ formation dynamics on the ethanol dication

Two- and three-body Coulomb explosion dynamics of isolated ethanol dications are studied via single-photon double-ionization with ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet pulses. The measured 3-body momentum correlations obtained via 3D coincidence imaging of the ionic products provide evidence for several concerted and sequential mechanisms: (1) a concerted 3-body breakup mechanism, with dominating channels such as CH₃⁺ + COH⁺ + H₂; (2) sequential dissociation in which the ejection of a low-kinetic-energy neutral OH precedes the Coulomb explosion of C₂H₅²⁺ → CH₃⁺ + CH₂⁺; and (3) a sequential 3-body breakup mechanism that dominates H₃⁺ formation from the ethanol dication via a mechanism that is different from the well-studied H₃⁺ formation in the 2-body Coulomb explosion of the methanol dication. Furthermore, we report surprising branching ratios of the competing C-O bond dissociation channels, resulting in H₃O⁺, H₂O⁺ and OH⁺ formation.

Two-Sided Impact of Water on the Relaxation of Inner-Valence Vacancies of Biologically Relevant Molecules

After ionization of an inner-valence electron of molecules, the resulting cation-radicals store substantial internal energy which, if sufficient, can trigger ejection of an additional electron in an Auger decay usually followed by molecule fragmentation. In the environment, intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) and electron-transfer mediated decay (ETMD) are also operative, resulting in one or two electrons being ejected from a neighbor, thus preventing the fragmentation of the initially ionized molecule. These relaxation processes are investigated theoretically for prototypical heterocycle-water complexes of imidazole, pyrrole, and pyridine. It is found that the hydrogen-bonding site of the water molecule critically influences the nature and energetics of the electronic states involved, opening or closing certain relaxation processes of the inner-valence ionized system. Our results indicate that the relaxation mechanisms of biologically relevant systems with inner-valence vacancies on their carbon atoms can strongly depend on the presence of the electron-density donating or accepting neighbor, either water or another biomolecule.

Structural and dynamical studies of CH-πbonded CH4-C6H6dimer by ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay

The inner-valence ionization and fragmentation dynamics of CH₄-C₆H₆dimer induced by 200 eV electron impact is studied utilizing a multi-particle coincidence momentum spectroscopy. The three-dimensional momentum vectors and kinetic energy release (KER) of the CH₄⁺+C₆H₆⁺ion pairs are obtained by coincident momentum measurement. Our analysis on the absolute cross sections indicates that the intermediate dication CH₄⁺-C₆H₆⁺is preferentially produced by the removal of an inner-valence electron from CH₄or C₆H₆and subsequent relaxation of ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay followed by two-body Coulomb explosion. Combining withab initiomolecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the real-time fragmentation dynamics including translational, vibrational and rotational motions are presented as a function of propagation time. The revealed fragmentation dynamics are expected to have a potential implication for crystal structure imaging with various radiation sources.

Ultrafast Charge and Proton Transfer in Doubly Ionized Ammonia Dimers

We investigate the ultrafast energy and charge transfer processes between ammonia molecules following ionization reactions initiated by electron impact. Exploring ionization-induced processes in molecular clusters provides us with a detailed insight into the dynamics using experiments in the energy domain. We ionize the ammonia dimer with 200 eV electrons and apply the fragment ions coincident momentum spectroscopy and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. We identify two mechanisms leading to the doubly charged ammonia dimer. In the first one, a single molecule is ionized. This initiates an ultrafast proton transfer process, leading to the formation of the NH₂⁺ + NH₄⁺ pair. Alternatively, a dimer with a delocalized charge is formed dominantly via the intermolecular Coulombic decay, forming the NH₃⁺·NH₃⁺ dication. This dication further dissociates into two NH₃⁺ cations. The ab initio calculations have reproduced the measured kinetic energy release of the ion pairs and revealed the dynamical processes following the double ionization.

Triple ionization and fragmentation of benzene trimers following ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay

Intermolecular interactions involving aromatic rings are ubiquitous in biochemistry and they govern the properties of many organic materials. Nevertheless, our understanding of the structures and dynamics of aromatic clusters remains incomplete, in particular for systems beyond the dimers, despite their high presence in many macromolecular systems such as DNA and proteins. Here, we study the fragmentation dynamics of benzene trimer that represents a prototype of higher-order aromatic clusters. The trimers are initially ionized by electron-collision with the creation of a deep-lying carbon 2s⁻¹ state or one outer-valence and one inner-valence vacancies at two separate molecules. Triple-coincidence ion momentum spectroscopy, accompanied by ab-initio calculations and further supported by strong-field laser experiments, allows us to elucidate the details on the fragmentation dynamics of benzene trimers.

Higher-order aromatic clusters are prevalent in biochemical systems, but a full understanding of their structural and dynamical properties is lacking. Here, the authors demonstrate that inner-valence ionization can induce ultrafast relaxation and further fragmentation mechanisms in benzene trimers.

Ambient-light-induced intermolecular Coulombic decay in unbound pyridine monomers

Intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) is a process whereby photoexcited molecules relax by ionizing their neighbouring molecules. ICD is efficient when intermolecular interactions are active and consequently it is observed only in weakly bound systems, such as clusters and hydrogen-bonded systems. Here we report an efficient ICD between unbound molecules excited at ambient-light intensities. On the photoexcitation of gas-phase pyridine monomers, well below the ionization threshold and at low laser intensities, we detected the parent and heavier-than-parent cations. The isotropic emission of slow electrons revealed ICD as the underlying process. π-π* excitation in unbounded pyridine monomers triggered an associative interaction between them, which leads to an efficient three-centre ICD. The cation resulting from the molecular association of the three pyridine centres relaxed through fragmentation. This below-threshold ionization under ambient light has implications for the understanding of radiation damage and astrochemistry.

Femtosecond Time-Resolved Neighbor Roles in the Fragmentation Dynamics of Molecules in a Dimer

How the neighbor effect plays its role in the fragmentation of molecular clusters attracts great attention for physicists and chemists. Here, we study this effect in the fragmentation of N_{2}O dimer by performing three-body coincidence measurements on the femtosecond timescale. Rotations of bound N_{2}O^{+} triggered by neutral or ionic neighbors are tracked. The forbidden dissociation path between B^{2}Π and ^{4}Π is opened by the spin-exchange effect due to the existence of neighbor ions, leading to a new channel of N_{2}O^{+}→NO+N^{+} originating from B^{2}Π. The formation and dissociation of the metastable product N_{3}O_{2}^{+} from two ion-molecule reaction channels are tracked in real time, and the corresponding trajectories are captured. Our results demonstrate a significant and promising step towards the understanding of neighbor roles in the reactions within clusters.

Projected Complex Absorbing Potential Multireference Configuration Interaction Approach for Shape and Feshbach Resonances

Anion resonances are formed as metastable intermediates in low-energy electron-induced reactions. Due to the finite lifetimes of resonances, applying standard Hermitian formalism for their characterization presents a vexing problem for computational chemists. Numerous modifications to conventional quantum chemical methods have enabled satisfactory characterization of resonances, but specific issues remain, especially in describing two-particle one-hole (2p-1h) resonances. An accurate description of these resonances and their coupling with single-particle resonances requires a multireference approach. We propose a projected complex absorbing potential (CAP) implementation within the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) framework to characterize single-particle and 2p-1h resonances. As a first application, we use the projected-CAP-MRCI approach to characterize and benchmark the ²Π_g shape resonance in N₂^-. We test its performance as a function of the size of the subspace and other parameters, and we compute the complex potential energy surface of the ²Π_g shape resonance to show that a smooth curve is obtained. One key benefit of MRCI is that it can describe Feshbach resonances (most common examples of 2p-1h resonances) at the same footing as shape resonances. Therefore, it is uniquely positioned to describe mixing between the different channels. To test these additional capabilities, we compute Feshbach resonances in H₂O^- and anions of dicyanoethylene isomers. We find that CAP-MRCI can efficiently capture the mixing between the Feshbach and shape resonances in dicyanoethylene isomers, which has significant consequences for their lifetimes.

Concerted Double Hydrogen-Bond Breaking by Intermolecular Coulombic Decay in the Formic Acid Dimer

Hydrogen bonds are ubiquitous in nature and of fundamental importance to the chemical and physical properties of molecular systems in the condensed phase. Nevertheless, our understanding of the structural and dynamical properties of hydrogen-bonded complexes in particular in electronic excited states remains very incomplete. Here, by using formic acid (FA) dimer as a prototype of DNA base pair, we investigate the ultrafast decay process initiated by removal of an electron from the inner-valence shell of the molecule upon electron-beam irradiation. Through fragment-ion and electron coincident momentum measurements and ab initio calculations, we find that de-excitation of an outer-valence electron at the same site can initiate ultrafast energy transfer to the neighboring molecule, which is in turn ionized through the emission of low-energy electrons. Our study reveals a concerted breaking of double hydrogen-bond in the dimer initiated by the ultrafast molecular rotations of two FA⁺ cations following this nonlocal decay mechanism.
