A thiolate-bridged FeIVFeIV μ-nitrido complex and its hydrogenation reactivity toward ammonia formation

Stepwise Reduction of Redox Noninnocent Nitrosobenzene to Aniline via a Rare Phenylhydroxylamino Intermediate on a Thiolate-Bridged Dicobalt Scaffold

Nitrosobenzene (PhNO) and phenylhydroxylamine (PhNHOH) are of paramount importance because of their involvement as crucial intermediates in the biological metabolism and catalytic transformation of nitrobenzene (PhNO2) to aniline (PhNH2). However, a complete reductive transformation cycle of PhNO to PhNH2 via the PhNHOH intermediate has not been reported yet. In this context, we design and construct a new thiolate-bridged dicobalt scaffold that can accomplish coordination activation and reductive transformation of PhNO. Notably, an unprecedented reversible ligand-based redox sequence PhNO0 ↔ PhNO•- ↔ PhNO2- can be achieved on this well-defined {CoIII(μ-SPh)2CoIII} functional platform. Further detailed reactivity investigations demonstrate that the PhNO0 and PhNO•- complexes cannot react with the usual hydrogen and hydride donors to afford the corresponding phenylhydroxylamino (PhNHO-) species. However, the double reduced PhNO2- complex can readily undergo N-protonation with an uncommon weak proton donor PhSH to selectively yield a stable dicobalt PhNHO- bridged complex with a high pKa value of 13-16. Cyclic voltammetry shows that there are two successive reduction events at E1/2 = -0.075 V and Ep = -1.08 V for the PhNO0 complex, which allows us to determine both bond dissociation energy (BDEN-H) of 59-63 kcal·mol-1 and thermodynamic hydricity (ΔGH-) of 71-75 kcal·mol-1 of the PhNHO- complex. Both values indicate that the PhNO•- complex is not a potent hydrogen abstractor and the PhNO0 complex is not an efficient hydride acceptor. In the presence of BH3 as a combination of protons and electrons, facile N-O bond cleavage of the coordinated PhNHO- group can be realized to generate PhNH2 and a dicobalt hydroxide-bridged complex. Overall, we present the first stepwise reductive sequence, PhNO0 ↔ PhNO•- ↔ PhNO2- ↔ PhNHO- → PhNH2.

Construction and Function of Thiolate-Bridged Diiron NxHy Nitrogenase Model Complexes

ConspectusBiological nitrogen fixation mediated by nitrogenases has garnered significant research interest due to its critical importance to the development of efficient catalysts for mild ammonia synthesis. Although the active center of the most studied FeMo-nitrogenases has been determined to be a complicated [Fe7S9MoC] hetero-multinuclear metal-sulfur cluster known as the FeMo-cofactor, the exact binding site and reduction pathway of N2 remain a subject of debate. Over the past decades, the majority of studies have focused on mononuclear molybdenum or iron centers as potential reaction sites. In stark contrast, cooperative activation of N2 through bi- or multimetallic centers has been largely overlooked and underexplored, despite the renewed interest sparked by recent biochemical and computational studies. Consequently, constructing bioinspired bi- or multinuclear metallic model complexes presents an intriguing yet challenging prospect. In this Account, we detail our long-standing research on the design and synthesis of novel thiolate-bridged diiron complexes as nitrogenase models and their application to chemical simulations of potential biological N2 reduction pathways.Inspired by the structural and electronic features of the potential diiron active center in the belt region of the FeMo-cofactor, we have designed and synthesized a series of new thiolate-bridged diiron nitrogenase model complexes, wherein iron centers with +2 or +3 oxidation states are coordinated by Cp* as carbon-based donors and thiolate ligands as sulfur donors. Through the synergistic interaction between the two iron centers, unstable diazene (NH═NH) species can be trapped to generate the first example of a [Fe2S2]-type complex bearing a cis-μ-η1:η1-NH═NH subunit. Significantly, this species can not only catalyze the reductive N-N bond cleavage of hydrazine to ammonia but also trigger a stepwise reduction sequence NH═NH → [NH2-NH]- → [NH]2-(+NH3) → [NH2]- → NH3. Furthermore, an unprecedented thiolate-bridged diiron μ-nitride featuring a bent Fe-N-Fe moiety was successfully isolated and structurally characterized. Importantly, this diiron μ-nitride can undergo successive proton-coupled electron transfer processes to efficiently release ammonia in the presence of separate protons and electrons and can even be directly hydrogenated using H2 as a combination of protons and electrons for high-yield ammonia formation. Based on combined experimental and computational studies, we proposed two distinct reductive transformation sequences on the diiron centers, which involve a series of crucial NxHy intermediates. Moreover, we also achieved catalytic N2 reduction to silylamines with [Fe2S2]-type complexes by ligand modulation.Our bioinspired diiron cooperative scaffold may provide a suitable model for probing the potential N2 stepwise reduction pathways from the molecular level. Different from the traditional alternating and distal pathways dominated by mononuclear iron or molybdenum complexes, our proposed alternating transformation route based on the diiron centers may not involve the N2H4 intermediate, and the convergence point of the alternating and terminal pathways is imide, not amide. Our research strategy could inform the design and development of new types of bioinspired catalysts for mild and efficient nitrogen reduction in the future.

Jellyfish-type Dinuclear Hafnium Azido Complexes: Synthesis and Reactivity

Di- and multinuclear hafnium complexes bridged by ligands have been rarely reported. In this article, a novel 3,5-disubstituted pyrazolate-bridged ligand LH5 with two [N2 N]2- -type chelating side arms was designed and synthesized, which supported a series of dinuclear hafnium complexes. Dinuclear hafnium azides [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(THF)4 ] 3 and [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(2,2,2-Kryptofix)] 4 were further synthesized and structurally characterized, featuring two sets of terminal and bridging azido ligands like jellyfishes. The reactivity of 3 under reduction conditions was conducted, leading to a formation of a tetranuclear hafnium imido complex [L1 Hf2 (μ1 -NH)(N3 ){μ2 -K}]2 5. DFT calculations revealed that the mixed imido azide 5 was generated via an intramolecular C-H insertion from a putative dinuclear HfIV -nitridyl intermediate.

Unusual Hydrogenation Reactivities of a Thiolate-Bridged Dicobalt μ-Nitride Featuring a Bent {CoIII-N-CoIII} Core

Transition metal nitrides have received considerable attention owing to their crucial roles in nitrogen fixation and nitrogen atom transfer reactions. Compared to the early and middle transition metals, it is much more challenging to access late transition metal nitrides, especially cobalt in group 9. So far, only a handful of cobalt nitrides have been reported; consequently, their hydrogenation reactivity is largely unexplored. Herein, we present a structurally and spectroscopically well-characterized thiolate-bridged dicobalt μ-nitride [Cp*CoIII(μ-SAd)(μ-N)CoIIICp*] (2) featuring a bent {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} core. Remarkably, complex 2 can realize not only direct hydrogenation of nitride to amide but also stepwise N-H bond formation from nitride to ammonia. Specifically, 2 can facilely activate dihydrogen (H2) at mild conditions to generate a dicobalt μ-amide [Cp*CoII(μ-SAd)(μ-NH2)CoIICp*] (4) via an unusual mechanism of two-electron oxidation of H2 as proposed by computational studies; in the presence of protons (H+) and electrons, nitride 2 can convert to dicobalt μ-imide [Cp*CoIII(μ-SAd)(μ-NH)CoIIICp*][BPh4] (3[BPh4]) and to CoIICoII μ-amide 4, and finally release ammonia. In contrast to 2, the only other structurally characterized dicobalt μ-nitride Na(THF)4{[(ketguan)CoIII(N3)]2(μ-N)} (ketguan = [(tBu2CN)C(NDipp)2]-, Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) (e) that possesses a linear {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} moiety cannot directly react with H2 or H+. Further in-depth electronic structure analyses shed light on how the varying geometries of the {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} moieties in 2 and e, bent vs linear, impart their disparate reactivities.

Order-order assembly transition-driven polyamines detection based on iron-sulfur complexes

Innovative modes of response can greatly push forward chemical sensing processes and subsequently improve sensing performance. Classical chemical sensing modes seldom involve the transition of a delicate molecular assembly during the response. Here, we display a sensing mode for polyamine detection based on an order-order transition of iron-sulfur complexes upon their assembly. Strong validation proves that the unique order-order transition of the assemblies is the driving force of the response, in which the polyamine captures the metal ion of the iron-sulfur complex, leading it to decompose into a metal-polyamine product, accompanied by an order-order transition of the assemblies. This mechanism makes the detection process more intuitive and selective, and remarkably improves the detection efficiency, achieving excellent polyamines specificity, second-level response, convenient visual detection, and good recyclability of the sensing system. Furthermore, this paper also provides opportunities for the further application of the iron-sulfur platform in environment-related fields.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

Snapshots of Early-Stage Quantitative N2 Electrophilic Functionalization

Electrophilic functionalization of N₂ moieties in metal dinitrogen complexes typically initiates the catalytic synthesis of N-containing molecules directly from N₂. Despite intensive research in the last six decades, how to efficiently and even quantitatively convert N₂ into diazenido and hydrazido species still poses a great challenge. In this regard, systematic and comprehensive investigations to elucidate the reaction intricacies are of profound significance. Herein, we report a kinetic dissection on the first and second electrophilic functionalization steps of a new Cr⁰-N₂ system with HOTf, MeOTf, and Me₃SiOTf. All reactions pass through fleeting diazenido intermediates and furnish long-lived final hydrazido products, and both steps are quantitative conversions at low temperatures. All of the second-order reaction rates of the first and second transformations were determined as well as the lifetimes of the intervening diazenido species. Based on these findings, we succeeded in large-scale and near-quantitative preparation of all hydrazido species.

Dinitrogen cleavage and hydrogenation to ammonia with a uranium complex

The Haber-Bosch process produces ammonia (NH₃) from dinitrogen (N₂) and dihydrogen (H₂), but requires high temperature and pressure. Before iron-based catalysts were exploited in the current industrial Haber-Bosch process, uranium-based materials served as effective catalysts for production of NH₃ from N₂. Although some molecular uranium complexes are known to be capable of combining with N₂, further hydrogenation with H₂ forming NH₃ has not been reported to date. Here, we describe the first example of N₂ cleavage and hydrogenation with H₂ to NH₃ with a molecular uranium complex. The N₂ cleavage product contains three uranium centers that are bridged by three imido μ ₂-NH ligands and one nitrido μ ₃-N ligand. Labeling experiments with ¹⁵N demonstrate that the nitrido ligand in the product originates from N₂. Reaction of the N₂-cleaved complex with H₂ or H⁺ forms NH₃ under mild conditions. A synthetic cycle has been established by the reaction of the N₂-cleaved complex with trimethylsilyl chloride. The isolation of this trinuclear imido-nitrido product implies that a multi-metallic uranium assembly plays an important role in the activation of N₂.

Iron-Based Nanocatalysts for Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction

Nitrate has a high level of stability and persistence in water, endangering human health and aquatic ecosystems. Due to its high reliability and efficiency, the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO₃ RR) is regarded as the best available option for mitigating excess nitrate in water and wastewater, especially for the removal of trace levels of nitrate. One of the most critical factors in the electrochemical reduction are the catalysts, which directly affect the reaction efficiency of nitrate removal. Iron-based nanocatalysts, which have the advantages of nontoxicity, wide availability, and low cost, have emerged as a promising electrochemical NO₃ RR material in recent years. This review covers major aspects of iron-based nanocatalysts for electrochemical NO₃ RR, including synthetic methods, structural design, performance enhancement, electrocatalytic nitrate reduction test, and reduction mechanism. The recent progress of iron-based nanocatalysts for electrochemical NO₃ RR and the mechanism of functional advantages for modified structures are reviewed from the perspectives of loading, doping, and assembly strategies, in order to realize the conversion from pollutant nitrate to harmless nitrogen or ammonia and other sustainable products. Finally, challenges and future directions for the development of low-cost and highly-efficient iron-based nanocatalysts are explored.

Plasma-Assisted Dinitrogen Activation on Small Cobalt Clusters: Co4 N9 + with Enhanced Stability

We have performed a study on the accommodation of nitrogen doping toward superatomic states of transition metal clusters. By reacting cobalt clusters with N₂ in the presence of plasma radiation, a large number of odd-nitrogen clusters were observed, typically Co₃ N_2m-1 ⁺ (m=1-5) and Co₄ N_2m-1 ⁺ (m=1-6) series, showing N≡N bond cleavage in the mild plasma atmosphere. Interestingly, the Co₃ N₇ ⁺ , Co₄ N₉ ⁺ , and Co₅ N₉ ⁺ clusters exhibit prominent mass abundances. First-principles calculation results elucidate the stability of the diverse cobalt nitride clusters and find unique stability of Co₄ N₉ ⁺ with a swallow-kite structure of which four coordinated N₂ molecules causes a significantly enlarged HOMO-LUMO gap, while the single N atom doping gives rise to superatomic states of 1S² 1P³ ||1D⁰ . We reveal an efficient dinitrogen activation strategy by reacting multiple N₂ molecules with cobalt clusters under a plasma atmosphere.

Organometallic μ-Nitridodiiron Complexes in Oxidation States Ranging from (III/III) to (IV/IV)

Iron complexes with nitrido ligands are of interest as molecular analogues of key intermediates during N₂-to-NH₃ conversion in industrial or enzymatic processes. Dinuclear iron complexes with a bridging nitrido unit are mostly known in relatively high oxidation states (III/IV or IV/IV), originating from the decomposition of azidoiron precursors via high-valent Fe≡N intermediates. The use of a tetra-NHC macrocyclic scaffold ligand (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) has now allowed for the isolation of a series of organometallic μ-nitridodiiron complexes ranging from the mid-valent Fe^III-N-Fe^III (1) via mixed-valent Fe^III-N-Fe^IV (type 4) to the high-valent Fe^IV-N-Fe^IV (type 5) species that are interconverted at moderate potentials, accompanied by axial ligand binding at the Fe^IV sites. Magnetic measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy showed the homovalent complexes to be diamagnetic and the mixed-valent system to feature an S = 1/2 ground state due to very strong antiferromagnetic coupling. The bonding in the Fe-N-Fe moiety has been further probed by crystallographic structure determination, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer and UV-vis spectroscopies, as well as density functional theory computations, which revealed high covalency and nearly identical Fe-N distances across this redox series. The latter has been rationalized in terms of the nonbonding nature of the combination of Fe d_z² atomic orbitals from which electrons are successively removed upon oxidation, and these redox processes are best described as being metal-centered. The tetra-NHC-ligated μ-nitridodiiron series complements a set of related complexes with single-atom μ-oxido and μ-phosphido bridges, but the Fe-N-Fe core exhibits a comparatively high stability over several oxidation states. This promises interesting applications in view of the manifold catalytic uses of μ-nitridodiiron complexes based on macrocyclic N-donor porphinato(2-) or phthalocyaninato(2-) ligands.

Reactivity of Multimetallic Thorium Nitrides Generated by Reduction of Thorium Azides

Thorium nitrides are likely intermediates in the reported cleavage and functionalization of dinitrogen by molecular thorium complexes and are attractive compounds for the study of multiple bond formation in f-element chemistry, but only one example of thorium nitride isolable from solution was reported. Here, we show that stable multimetallic azide/nitride thorium complexes can be generated by reduction of thorium azide precursors─a route that has failed so far to produce Th nitrides. Once isolated, the thorium azide/nitride clusters, M₃Th═N═Th (M = K or Cs), are stable in solutions probably due to the presence of alkali ions capping the nitride, but their synthesis requires a careful control of the reaction conditions (solvent, temperature, nature of precursor, and alkali ion). The nature of the cation plays an important role in generating a nitride product and results in large structural differences with a bent Th═N═Th moiety found in the K-bound nitride as a result of a strong K-nitride interaction and a linear arrangement in the Cs-bound nitride. Reactivity studies demonstrated the ability of Th nitrides to cleave CO in ambient conditions yielding CN^-.
