Functionalizing aromatic compounds with optical cycling centres

Elucidating ultranarrow 2F7/2 to 2F5/2 absorption in ytterbium(iii) complexes

Achieving ultranarrow absorption linewidths in the condensed phase enables optical state preparation of specific non-thermal states, a prerequisite for quantum-enabled technologies. The 4f orbitals of lanthanide(iii) complexes are often referred to as "atom-like," reflecting their isolated nature, and are promising substrates for the optical preparation of specific quantum states. To better understand the photophysical properties of 4f states and assess their potential for quantum applications, theoretical building blocks are required for rapid screening. In this study, an atomic-level perturbative calculation (i.e., spin-orbit crystal field, SOCF) is applied to various Yb(iii) complexes to investigate their linear absorption and emission through a fitting mechanism of their experimentally determined transition energies and oscillator strengths. In particular, the optical properties of (thiolfan)YbCl(THF) (thiolfan = 1,1'-bis(2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-thiomethylenephenoxy)ferrocene), a recently reported complex with an ultranarrow optical linewidth, are computed and compared to those of other Yb(iii) compounds. Through a transition energy sampling study, major contributors to the optical linewidth are identified. We observe particularly isolated f-f transitions and narrow linewidths, which we attribute to two distinct factors. Firstly, the ultra-high atomic similarity of the orbitals involved in the optical transition, along with the presence of an anisotropic crystal field, collectively contribute to the observed narrow transitions. Secondly, we note highly correlated excited-ground energy fluctuations that serve to greatly suppress inhomogeneous line-broadening. This article illustrates how SOCF can be used as a low-cost method to probe the influence of crystal field environment on the optical properties of Yb(iii) complexes to assist the development of novel lanthanide series quantum materials.

Clock-Line-Mediated Sisyphus Cooling

We demonstrate subrecoil Sisyphus cooling using the long-lived ^{3}P_{0} clock state in alkaline-earth-like ytterbium. A 1388-nm optical standing wave nearly resonant with the ^{3}P_{0}→^{3}D_{1} transition creates a spatially periodic light shift of the ^{3}P_{0} clock state. Following excitation on the ultranarrow clock transition, we observe Sisyphus cooling in this potential, as the light shift is correlated with excitation to ^{3}D_{1} and subsequent spontaneous decay to the ^{1}S_{0} ground state. We observe that cooling enhances the loading efficiency of atoms into a 759-nm magic-wavelength one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, as compared to standard Doppler cooling on the ^{1}S_{0}→^{3}P_{1} transition. Sisyphus cooling yields temperatures below 200 nK in the weakly confined, transverse dimensions of the 1D optical lattice. These lower temperatures improve optical lattice clocks by facilitating the use of shallow lattices with reduced light shifts while retaining large atom numbers to reduce the quantum projection noise. This Sisyphus cooling can be pulsed or continuous and is applicable to a range of quantum metrology applications.

Alternant Hydrocarbon Diradicals as Optically Addressable Molecular Qubits

High-spin molecules allow for bottom-up qubit design and are promising platforms for magnetic sensing and quantum information science. Optical addressability of molecular electron spins has also been proposed in first-row transition-metal complexes via optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) mechanisms analogous to the diamond-nitrogen-vacancy color center. However, significantly less progress has been made on the front of metal-free molecules, which can deliver lower costs and milder environmental impacts. At present, most luminescent open-shell organic molecules are π-diradicals, but such systems often suffer from poor ground-state open-shell characters necessary to realize a stable ground-state molecular qubit. In this work, we use alternancy symmetry to selectively minimize radical-radical interactions in the ground state, generating π-systems with high diradical characters. We call them m-dimers, referencing the need to covalently link two benzylic radicals at their meta carbon atoms for the desired symmetry. Through a detailed electronic structure analysis, we find that the excited states of alternant hydrocarbon m-diradicals contain important symmetries that can be used to construct ODMR mechanisms leading to ground-state spin polarization. The molecular parameters are set in the context of a tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radical dimer covalently tethered at the meta position, demonstrating the feasibility of alternant m-diradicals as molecular color centers.

Dual Optical Cycling Centers Mounted on an Organic Scaffold: New Insights from Quantum Chemistry Calculations and Symmetry Analysis

Molecules cooled to ultracold temperatures are desirable for applications in fundamental physics and quantum information science. However, cooling polyatomic molecules with more than six atoms has not yet been achieved. Building on the idea of an optical cycling center (OCC), a moiety supporting a set of localized and isolated electronic states within a polyatomic molecule, molecules with two OCCs (bi-OCCs) may afford better cooling efficiency by doubling the photon scattering rate. By using quantum chemistry calculations, we assess the extent of the coupling of the two OCCs with each other and the molecular scaffold. We show that promising coolable bi-OCC molecules can be proposed by following chemical design principles.

Analysis on high-resolution spectrum of the S1-S0 transition of free-base phthalocyanine

A high-resolution absorption spectrum of the S1-S0 transition of free-base phthalocyanine was observed and analyzed with improved reliability. The spectrum, with a partially resolved rotational structure, was obtained by using the buffer-gas cooling technique and a single-mode tunable laser. Our new analysis reveals that the S1←S0000 band belongs to the a-type transition, where the electronic transition moment aligns parallel to the NH-HN direction, allowing the assignment of the S1 state to 1B3u. These results agree with a prior study using supersonic expansion and are well supported by theoretical calculations. Interestingly, the rotational constant B in the S1 state, which is often smaller than that in the ground state for typical molecules, was found to be slightly larger than that in the S01Ag state. This suggests a change in the character of π bonds with the electronic excitation.

Extending the Large Molecule Limit: The Role of Fermi Resonance in Developing a Quantum Functional Group

Polyatomic molecules equipped with optical cycling centers (OCCs), enabling continuous photon scattering during optical excitation, are exciting candidates for advancing quantum information science. However, as these molecules grow in size and complexity, the interplay of complex vibronic couplings on optical cycling becomes a critical but relatively unexplored consideration. Here, we present an extensive exploration of Fermi resonances in large-scale OCC-containing molecules using high-resolution dispersed laser-induced fluorescence and excitation spectroscopy. These resonances manifest as vibrational coupling leading to intensity borrowing by combination bands near optically active harmonic bands, which require additional repumping lasers for effective optical cycling. To mitigate these effects, we explore altering the vibrational energy level spacing through substitutions on the phenyl ring or changes in the OCC itself. While the complete elimination of vibrational coupling in complex molecules remains challenging, our findings highlight significant mitigation possibilities, opening new avenues for optimizing optical cycling in large polyatomic molecules.

Mapping electronic decoherence pathways in molecules

Establishing the fundamental chemical principles that govern molecular electronic quantum decoherence has remained an outstanding challenge. Fundamental questions such as how solvent and intramolecular vibrations or chemical functionalization contribute to the decoherence remain unanswered and are beyond the reach of state-of-the-art theoretical and experimental approaches. Here we address this challenge by developing a strategy to isolate electronic decoherence pathways for molecular chromophores immersed in condensed phase environments that enables elucidating how electronic quantum coherence is lost. For this, we first identify resonance Raman spectroscopy as a general experimental method to reconstruct molecular spectral densities with full chemical complexity at room temperature, in solvent, and for fluorescent and non-fluorescent molecules. We then show how to quantitatively capture the decoherence dynamics from the spectral density and identify decoherence pathways by decomposing the overall coherence loss into contributions due to individual molecular vibrations and solvent modes. We illustrate the utility of the strategy by analyzing the electronic decoherence pathways of the DNA base thymine in water. Its electronic coherences decay in [Formula: see text]30 fs. The early-time decoherence is determined by intramolecular vibrations while the overall decay by solvent. Chemical substitution of thymine modulates the decoherence with hydrogen-bond interactions of the thymine ring with water leading to the fastest decoherence. Increasing temperature leads to faster decoherence as it enhances the importance of solvent contributions but leaves the early-time decoherence dynamics intact. The developed strategy opens key opportunities to establish the connection between molecular structure and quantum decoherence as needed to develop chemical strategies to rationally modulate it.

Chiral molecule candidates for trapped ion spectroscopy by ab initio calculations: From state preparation to parity violation

Parity non-conservation (PNC) due to the weak interaction is predicted to give rise to enantiomer dependent vibrational constants in chiral molecules, but the phenomenon has so far eluded experimental observation. The enhanced sensitivity of molecules to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) has led to substantial advances in molecular precision spectroscopy, and these may be applied to PNC searches as well. Specifically, trapped molecular ion experiments leverage the universality of trapping charged particles to optimize the molecular ion species studied toward BSM searches, but in searches for PNC, only a few chiral molecular ion candidates have been proposed so far. Importantly, viable candidates need to be internally cold, and their internal state populations should be detectable with high quantum efficiency. To this end, we focus on molecular ions that can be created by near threshold resonant two-photon ionization and detected via state-selective photo-dissociation. Such candidates need to be stable in both charged and neutral chiral versions to be amenable to these methods. Here, we present a collection of suitable chiral molecular ion candidates we have found, including CHDBrI+ and CHCaBrI+, that fulfill these conditions according to our ab initio calculations. We find that organo-metallic species have low ionization energy as neutrals and relatively high dissociation thresholds. Finally, we compute the magnitude of the PNC values for vibrational transitions for some of these candidates. An experimental demonstration of state preparation and readout for these candidates will be an important milestone toward measuring PNC in chiral molecules for the first time.

Bichromatic Imaging of Single Molecules in an Optical Tweezer Array

We report on a novel bichromatic fluorescent imaging scheme for background-free detection of single CaF molecules trapped in an optical tweezer array. By collecting fluorescence on one optical transition while using another for laser cooling, we achieve an imaging fidelity of 97.7(2)% and a nondestructive detection fidelity of 95.5(6)%. Notably, these fidelities are achieved with a modest photon budget, suggesting that the method could be extended to more complex laser-coolable molecules with less favorable optical cycling properties. We also report on a framework and new methods to characterize various loss mechanisms that occur generally during fluorescent detection of trapped molecules, including two-photon decay and admixtures of higher excited states that are induced by the trapping light. In particular, we develop a novel method to dispersively measure transition matrix elements between electronically excited states. The method could also be used to measure arbitrarily small Franck-Condon factors between electronically excited states, which could significantly aid in ongoing efforts to laser cool complex polyatomic molecules.

Structural and electronic trends of optical cycling centers in polyatomic molecules revealed by microwave spectroscopy of MgCCH, CaCCH, and SrCCH

The unique optical cycling efficiency of alkaline earth metal-ligand molecules has enabled significant advances in polyatomic laser cooling and trapping. Rotational spectroscopy is an ideal tool for probing the molecular properties that underpin optical cycling, thereby elucidating the design principles for expanding the chemical diversity and scope of these platforms for quantum science. We present a comprehensive study of the structure and electronic properties in alkaline earth metal acetylides with high-resolution microwave spectra of 17 isotopologues of MgCCH, CaCCH, and SrCCH in their 2Σ+ ground electronic states. The precise semiexperimental equilibrium geometry of each species has been derived by correcting the measured rotational constants for electronic and zero-point vibrational contributions calculated with high-level quantum chemistry methods. The well-resolved hyperfine structure associated with the 1,2H, 13C, and metal nuclear spins provides further information on the distribution and hybridization of the metal-centered, optically active unpaired electron. Together, these measurements allow us to correlate trends in chemical bonding and structure with the electronic properties that promote efficient optical cycling essential to next-generation experiments in precision measurement and quantum control of complex polyatomic molecules.

Zwitterions Functionalized by Optical Cycling Centers: Toward Laser-Coolable Polyatomic Molecular Cations

Functionalization of large aromatic compounds and biomolecules with optical cycling centers (OCC) is of considerable interest for the design and engineering of molecules with a highly selective optical photoresponse. Both internal and external dynamics in such molecules can be precisely controlled by lasers, enabling their efficient cooling and opening up broad prospects for high-precision spectroscopy, ultracold chemistry, enantiomer separation, and various other fields. The way the OCC is bonded to a molecular ligand is crucial to the optical properties of the OCC, first of all, for the degree of closure of the optical cycling loop. Here we introduce a novel type of functionalized molecular cation where a positively charged OCC is bonded to various organic zwitterions with a particularly high permanent dipole moment. We consider strontium(I) complexes with betaine and other zwitterionic ligands and show the possibility of creating efficient and highly closed population cycling for dipole-allowed optical transitions in such complexes.

Optical Trapping of a Polyatomic Molecule in an ℓ-Type Parity Doublet State

We report optical trapping of a polyatomic molecule, calcium monohydroxide (CaOH). CaOH molecules from a magneto-optical trap are sub-Doppler laser cooled to 20(3)  μK in free space and loaded into an optical dipole trap. We attain an in-trap molecule number density of 3(1)×10^{9}  cm^{-3} at a temperature of 57(8)  μK. Trapped CaOH molecules are optically pumped into an excited vibrational bending mode, whose ℓ-type parity doublet structure is a potential resource for a wide range of proposed quantum science applications with polyatomic molecules. We measure the spontaneous, radiative lifetime of this bending mode state to be ∼0.7  s.

Fully Saturated Hydrocarbons as Hosts of Optical Cycling Centers

Designing closed, laser-induced optical cycling transitions in trapped atoms or molecules is useful for quantum information processing, precision measurement, and quantum sensing. Larger molecules that feature such closed transitions are particularly desirable, as the increased degrees of freedom present new structures for optical control and enhanced measurements. The search for molecules with robust optical cycling centers is a challenge which requires design principles beyond trial-and-error. Two such principles are proposed for the particular M-O-R framework, where M is an alkaline earth metal radical, and R is a ligand: (1) Large, saturated hydrocarbons can serve as ligands, R, due to a substantial HOMO-LUMO gap that encloses the cycling transition, so long as the R group is rigid. (2) Electron-withdrawing groups, via induction, can enhance Franck-Condon factors (FCFs) of the optical cycling transition, as long as they do not disturb the locally linear structure in the M-O-R motif. With these tools in mind, larger molecules can be trapped and used as optical cycling centers, sometimes with higher FCFs than smaller molecules.

Laser Spectroscopy of Aromatic Molecules with Optical Cycling Centers: Strontium(I) Phenoxides

We report the production and spectroscopic characterization of strontium(I) phenoxide (SrOC₆H₅ or SrOPh) and variants featuring electron-withdrawing groups designed to suppress vibrational excitation during spontaneous emission from the electronically excited state. Optical cycling closure of these species, which is the decoupling of the vibrational state changes from spontaneous optical decay, is found by dispersed laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy to be high, in accordance with theoretical predictions. A high-resolution, rotationally resolved laser excitation spectrum is recorded for SrOPh, allowing the estimation of spectroscopic constants and identification of candidate optical cycling transitions for future work. The results confirm the promise of strontium phenoxides for laser cooling and quantum state detection at the single-molecule level.

High-Resolution Laser Spectroscopy of a Functionalized Aromatic Molecule

We present a high-resolution laser spectroscopic study of the òB₂-X̃²A₁ and B̃²B₁-X̃²A₁ transitions of calcium(I) phenoxide, CaOPh (CaOC₆H₅). The rotationally resolved band systems are analyzed using an effective Hamiltonian model and are accurately modeled as independent perpendicular (b- or c-type) transitions. The structure of calcium monophenoxide is compared to previously observed Ca-containing radicals, and implications for direct laser cooling are discussed. This work demonstrates that functionalization of aromatic molecules with optical cycling centers can preserve many of the properties needed for laser-based control.

Pathway toward Optical Cycling and Laser Cooling of Functionalized Arenes

Rapid and repeated photon cycling has enabled precision metrology and the development of quantum information systems using atoms and simple molecules. Extending optical cycling to structurally complex molecules would provide new capabilities in these areas, as well as in ultracold chemistry. Increased molecular complexity, however, makes realizing closed optical transitions more difficult. Building on already established strong optical cycling of diatomic, linear triatomic, and symmetric top molecules, recent work has pointed the way to cycling of larger molecules, including phenoxides. The paradigm for these systems is an optical cycling center bonded to a molecular ligand. Theory has suggested that cycling may be extended to even larger ligands, like naphthalene, pyrene, and coronene. Herein, we study optical excitation and fluorescent vibrational branching of CaO-[Formula: see text], SrO-[Formula: see text], and CaO-[Formula: see text] and find only weak decay to excited vibrational states, indicating a promising path to full quantum control and laser cooling of large arene-based molecules.
