High-resolution cryo-electron microscopy structure of block copolymer nanofibres with a crystalline core

Highly Efficient Preparation of Length and Width-Controllable Donor-Acceptor Nanoribbons via Polymerization-Induced Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of Fully Conjugated Block Copolymers

Despite the high potential of one-dimensional (1D) donor-acceptor (D-A) coaxial nanostructures in bulk-heterojunction solar cell applications, the preparation of such 1D nanostructures using π-conjugated polymers has remained elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of D-A semiconducting nanoribbons based on fully conjugated block copolymers (BCPs) prepared in a highly efficient procedure with controllable width and length via living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA). Initially, Suzuki-Miyaura catalyst-transfer polymerization was employed to successfully synthesize BCPs containing two types of acceptor shells as the first block, followed by a donor poly(3-propylthiophene) core as the second block. The limited solubility and high crystallinity of the core induced a polymerization-induced crystallization-driven self-assembly (PI-CDSA) of the BCPs into nanoribbons during polymerization, providing a tunable width (7.6-39.6 nm) depending on the length of the polymer backbone. Surprisingly, purifying as-synthesized BCPs via simple precipitation directly yielded short and uniform seed structures, greatly shortening the overall protocol by eliminating the time-consuming process of initial aging and breaking down to the seed required for the conventional CDSA. With this new highly efficient method, we achieved length control over a broad range from 169 to 2210 nm, with high precision (Lw/Ln < 1.20). Furthermore, combining self-seeding and seeded growth from two different D-A-type BCPs enabled continuous living epitaxial growth from each end of the nanoribbons, resulting in B-A-B triblock D-A semiconducting comicelles with controlled length.

Poly(ferrocenylsilane)-Based Redox-Active Artificial Organelles for Biomimetic Cascade Reactions

Artificial organelles serve as functional counterparts to natural organelles, which are primarily employed to artificially replicate, restore, or enhance cellular functions. While most artificial organelles exhibit basic functions, we diverge from this norm by utilizing poly(ferrocenylmethylethylthiocarboxypropylsilane) microcapsules (PFC MCs) to construct multifunctional artificial organelles through water/oil interfacial self-assembly. Within these PFC MCs, enzymatic cascades are induced through active molecular exchange across the membrane to mimic the functions of enzymes in mitochondria. We harness the inherent redox properties of the PFC polymer, which forms the membrane, to facilitate in-situ redox reactions similar to those supported by the inner membrane of natural mitochondria. Subsequent studies have demonstrated the interaction between PFC MCs and living cell including extended lifespans within various cell types. We anticipate that functional PFC MCs have the potential to serve as innovative platforms for organelle mimics capable of executing specific cellular functions.

Synthesis of ZSM-5 Zeolite Nanosheets with Tunable Silanol Nest Contents across an Ultra-wide pH Range and Their Catalytic Validation

Zeolite synthesis under acidic conditions has always presented a challenge. In this study, we successfully prepared series of ZSM-5 zeolite nanosheets (Z-5-SCA-X) over a broad pH range (4 to 13) without the need for additional supplements. This achievement was realized through aggregation crystallization of ZSM-5 zeolite subcrystal (Z-5-SC) with highly short-range ordering and ultrasmall size extracted from the synthetic system of ZSM-5 zeolite. Furthermore, the crystallization behavior of Z-5-SC was investigated, revealing its non-classical crystallization process under mildly alkaline and acidic conditions (pH<10), and the combination of classical and non-classical processes under strongly alkaline conditions (pH≥10). What's particularly intriguing is that, the silanol nest content in the resultant Z-5-SCA-X samples appears to be dependent on the pH values during the Z-5-SC crystallization process rather than its crystallinity. Finally, the results of the furfuryl alcohol etherification reaction demonstrate that reducing the concentration of silanol nests significantly enhances the catalytic performance of the Z-5-SCA-X zeolite. The ability to synthesize zeolite in neutral and acidic environments without the additional mineralizing agents not only broadens the current view of traditional zeolite synthesis but also provides a new approach to control the silanol nest content of zeolite catalysts.

Regulation of Two-Dimensional Platelet Micelles with Tunable Core Composition Distribution via Coassembly Seeded Growth Approach

Seeded growth termed "living" crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has been identified as a powerful method to create one- or two-dimensional nanoparticles. Epitaxial crystallization is usually regarded as the growth mechanism for the formation of uniform micelles. From this perspective, the unimer depositing rate is largely related to the crystallization temperature, which is a key factor to determine the crystallization rate and regulate the core composition distribution among nanoparticles. In the present work, the coassembly of two distinct crystallizable polymers is explored in detail in a one-pot seeded growth protocol. Results have shown that polylactone containing a larger number of methylene groups (-CH2-) in their repeating units such as poly(η-octalactone) (POL) has a faster crystallization rate compared to poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with a smaller number of -CH2- at ambient temperature (25 °C), thus a block or blocky platelet structure with heterogeneous composition distribution is formed. In contrast, when the crystallization temperature decreases to 4 °C, the difference of crystallization rate between both cores become negligible. Consequently, a completely random component distribution within 2D platelets is observed. Moreover, we also reveal that the core component of seed micelles is also paramount for the coassembly seeded growth, and a unique structure of flower-like platelet micelle is created from the coassembly of PCL/POL using POL core-forming seeds. This study on the formation of platelet micelles by one-pot seeded growth using two crystallizable components offers a considerable scope for the design of 2D polymer nanomaterials with a controlled core component distribution.

Bioinspired Self-Assembly of Metalloporphyrins and Polyelectrolytes into Hierarchical Supramolecular Nanostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Production in Water

Polypeptides, as natural polyelectrolytes, are assembled into tailored proteins to integrate chromophores and catalytic sites for photosynthesis. Mimicking nature to create the water-soluble nanoassemblies from synthetic polyelectrolytes and photocatalytic molecular species for artificial photosynthesis is still rare. Here, we report the enhancement of the full-spectrum solar-light-driven H2 production within a supramolecular system built by the co-assembly of anionic metalloporphyrins with cationic polyelectrolytes in water. This supramolecular photocatalytic system achieves a H2 production rate of 793 and 685 μmol h-1  g-1 over 24 h with a combination of Mg or Zn porphyrin as photosensitizers and Cu porphyrin as a catalyst, which is more than 23 times higher than that of free molecular controls. With a photosensitizer to catalyst ratio of 10000 : 1, the highest H2 production rate of >51,700 μmol h-1  g-1 with a turnover number (TON) of >1,290 per molecular catalyst was achieved over 24 h irradiation. The hierarchical self-assembly not only enhances photostability through forming ordered stackings of the metalloporphyrins but also facilitates both energy and electron transfer from antenna molecules to catalysts, and therefore promotes the photocatalysis. This study provides structural and mechanistic insights into the self-assembly enhanced photostability and catalytic performance of supramolecular photocatalytic systems.

Enhancing the Scalability of Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly Using Flow Reactors

Anisotropic materials have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in cargo delivery, surface modification, and composite reinforcement. Crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) is a practical way to access anisotropic structures, such as 2D platelets. Living CDSA, where platelets are formed by using seed particles, allows the platelet size to be well controlled. Nonetheless, the current method of platelet preparation is restricted to low concentrations and small scales, resulting in inefficient production, which hampers its potential for commercial applications. To address this limitation, continuous flow reactors were employed to improve the production efficiency. Flow platforms ensure consistent product quality by maintaining the same parameters throughout the process, circumventing batch-to-batch variations and discrepancies observed during scale-up. In this study, we present the first demonstration of living CDSA performed within flow reactors. A continuous flow system was established, and the epitaxial growth of platelets was initially conducted to study the influence of flow parameters such as temperature, residence time, and flow rate on the morphology of platelets. Comparison of different epitaxial growth manners of seeds and platelets was made when using seeds to perform living CDSA. Size-controllable platelets from seeds can be obtained from a series flow system by easily tuning flow rates. Additionally, uniform platelets were continuously collected, exhibiting improved size and dispersity compared to those obtained in batch reactions.

Tailored Energy Funneling in Photocatalytic π-Conjugated Polymer Nanofibers for High-Performance Hydrogen Production

The creation of artificial high-performance photosynthetic assemblies with a tailorable antenna system to deliver absorbed solar energy to a photosynthetic reaction center, thereby mimicking biological photosynthesis, remains a major challenge. We report the construction of recyclable, high-performance photosynthetic nanofibers with a crystalline π-conjugated polyfluorene core as an antenna system that funnels absorbed solar energy to spatially defined sensitized Co(II) porphyrin photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Highly effective energy funneling was achieved by tuning the dimensions of the nanofibers to exploit the very long exciton diffusion lengths (>200 nm) associated with the highly crystalline polyfluorene core formed using the living crystallization-driven self-assembly seeded growth method. This enabled efficient solar light-driven hydrogen production from water with a turnover number of over 450 for 8 h of irradiation, an H2 production rate of ca. 65 mmol h-1 g-1, and an overall quantum yield of 0.4% in the wavelength region (<405 nm) beyond the absorption of the molecular photocatalyst. The strategy of using a tailored antenna system based on π-conjugated polymers and maximizing exciton transport to a reaction center reported in this work opens up future opportunities for potential applications in other fields such as solar overall water splitting, CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic small molecule synthesis.
