Experimental characterization techniques for plasmon-assisted chemistry

Local electric field in nanocavities dictates the vibrational relaxation dynamics of interfacial molecules

Plasmonic nanocavities enable the generation of strong light-matter coupling and exhibit great potential in plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs). Although an electric field generated by nanocavities (E n) has recently been reported, its effect on the vibrational energy relaxation (VER) of the molecules in the nanocavities has not been explored. In this study, we reveal the impact of an electric field sensed by molecules (para-substituted thiophenol derivatives) in a nanocavity (E f) on VER processes by employing advanced time-resolved femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) supplemented by electrochemical measurements. The magnitude of E n is almost identical (1.0 ± 0.2 V nm-1) beyond the experimental deviation while E f varies from 0.3 V nm-1 to 1.7 V nm-1 depending on the substituent. An exponential correlation between E f and the complete recovery time of the ground vibrational C[double bond, length as m-dash]C state (T 2) of the phenyl ring is observed. Substances with a smaller T 2 are strongly correlated with the reported macroscopic chemical reactivity. This finding may aid in enriching the current understanding of PMCRs and highlights the possibility of regulating vibrational energy flow into desired reaction coordinates by using a local electric field.

Probing the Local Near-Field Intensity of Plasmonic Nanoparticles in the Mid-infrared Spectral Region

The enhanced local field of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in mid-infrared spectral regions is essential for improving the detection sensitivity of vibrational spectroscopy and mediating photochemical reactions. However, it is still challenging to measure its intensity at subnanometer scales. Here, using the NO2 symmetric stretching mode (νNO2) of self-assembled 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) monolayers on AuNPs as a model, we demonstrated that the percentage of excited νNO2 mode, determined by femtosecond time-resolved sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, allows us to directly detect the local field intensity of the AuNP surface in subnanometer ranges. The local-field intensity is tuned by AuNP diameters. An approximate 17-fold enhancement was observed for the local field on 80 nm AuNPs compared to the Au film. Additionally, the local field can regulate the anharmonicity of the νNO2 mode by synergistic effect with molecular orientation. This work offers a promising approach to probe the local field intensity distribution around plasmonic NP surfaces at subnanometer scales.

Enhanced photocatalysis of metal/covalent organic frameworks by plasmonic nanoparticles and homo/hetero-junctions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention in photocatalysis due to their unique features including extensive surface area, adjustable pores, and the ability to incorporate various functional groups. However, challenges such as limited visible light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination often hinder their photocatalytic efficiency. Recent developments have introduced plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) and junctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF/COF-based photocatalysts improved by integration of plasmonic NPs and junctions. We begin by examining the utilization of plasmonic NPs, known for absorbing longer-wavelength light compared to typical MOFs/COFs. These NPs exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when excited, effectively enhancing the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. Moreover, we discuss the role of homo/hetero-junctions in facilitating charge separation, further boosting the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. The mechanisms behind the improved photocatalytic performance of these composites are discussed, along with an assessment of challenges and opportunities in the field, guiding future research directions.

Probing Temperature-Induced Plasmonic Nonlinearity: Unveiling Opto-Thermal Effects on Light Absorption and Near-Field Enhancement

Precise measurement and control of local heating in plasmonic nanostructures are vital for diverse nanophotonic devices. Despite significant efforts, challenges in understanding temperature-induced plasmonic nonlinearity persist, particularly in light absorption and near-field enhancement due to the absence of suitable measurement techniques. This study presents an approach allowing simultaneous measurements of light absorption and near-field enhancement through angle-resolved near-field scanning optical microscopy with iterative opto-thermal analysis. We revealed gold thin films exhibit sublinear nonlinearity in near-field enhancement due to nonlinear opto-thermal effects, while light absorption shows both sublinear and superlinear behaviors at varying thicknesses. These observations align with predictions from a simple harmonic oscillation model, in which changes in damping parameters affect light absorption and field enhancement differently. The sensitivity of our method was experimentally examined by measuring the opto-thermal responses of three-dimensional nanostructure arrays. Our findings have direct implications for advancing plasmonic applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, photothermal effects, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Enhancing Plasmonic Hot Electron Energy on Ag Surface by Amine Coordination

Plasmonic catalysis has emerged as a promising approach to solar-chemical energy conversion. Notably, hot carriers play a decisive role in plasmonic catalysis since only when their energy matches with the LUMO or HOMO energy of the reactant molecule, can the reaction be activated. However, the hot carrier energy depends on the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the plasmonic metal substrate and the interaction with incident light. Tuning the hot carrier energy is of great significance for plasmonic catalysis but remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the energy of hot electrons can be significantly elevated to an unprecedented level through the coordination of amines on Ag surface. The bonding of amines and Ag reduces the work function of nanoparticles, leading to the increase of hot electron energy by 0.4 eV. This enhancement of energy promotes the cleavage of C-X (X=Cl, F) bonds upon excitation by visible light. This study provides new insights for promoting plasmonic charge transfer and enhancing the photocatalytic performance of plasmon-mediated systems.

Electron-Induced Damage by UV Photolysis of DNA Attached to Gold Nanoparticles

Photolysis of DNA attached to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ultraviolet (UV) photons induces DNA damage. The release of nucleobases (Cyt, Gua, Ade, and Thy) from DNA was the major reaction (99%) with an approximately equal release of pyrimidines and purines. This reaction contributes to the formation of abasic sites in DNA. In addition, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/MS (LC-MS/MS) analysis revealed the formation of reduction products of pyrimidines (5,6-dihydrothymidine and 5,6-dihydro-2'-deoxyuridine) and eight 2',3'- and 2',5'-dideoxynucleosides. In contrast, there was no evidence of the formation of 5-hydroxymethyluracil and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine, which are common oxidation products of thymine and guanine, respectively. Using appropriate filters, the main photochemical reactions were found to involve photoelectrons ejected from AuNPs by UV photons. The contribution of "hot" conduction band electrons with energies below the photoemission threshold was minor. The mechanism for the release of free nucleobases by photoelectrons is proposed to take place by the initial formation of transient molecular anions of the nucleobases, followed by dissociative electron attachment at the C1'-N glycosidic bond connecting the nucleobase to the sugar-phosphate backbone. This mechanism is consistent with the reactivity of secondary electrons ejected by X-ray irradiation of AuNPs attached to DNA, as well as the reactions of various nucleic acid derivatives irradiated with monoenergetic very-low-energy electrons (∼2 eV). These studies should help us to understand the chemistry of nanoparticles that are exposed to UV light and that are used as scaffolds and catalysts in molecular biology, curative agents in photodynamic therapy, and components of sunscreens and cosmetics.

Probing Oxidation Mechanisms in Plasmonic Catalysis: Unraveling the Role of Reactive Oxygen Species

Plasmon-induced oxidation has conventionally been attributed to the transfer of plasmonic hot holes. However, this theoretical framework encounters challenges in elucidating the latest experimental findings, such as enhanced catalytic efficiency under uncoupled irradiation conditions and superior oxidizability of silver nanoparticles. Herein, we employ liquid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as a real-time and in situ tool to explore the oxidation mechanisms in plasmonic catalysis, taking the decarboxylation of p-mercaptobenzoic acid (PMBA) as a case study. Our findings suggest that the plasmon-induced oxidation is driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS) rather than hot holes, holding true for both the Au and Ag nanoparticles. Subsequent investigations suggest that plasmon-induced ROS may arise from hot carriers or energy transfer mechanisms, exhibiting selectivity under different experimental conditions. The observations were substantiated by investigating the cleavage of the carbon-boron bonds. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms were clarified by energy level theories, advancing our understanding of plasmonic catalysis.

The plasmonic effect of Cu on tuning CO2 reduction activity and selectivity

Copper (Cu) has been widely used for catalyzing the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), but the plasmonic effect of Cu has rarely been explored for tuning the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR. Herein, we conducted a quantitative analysis on the plasmon-generated photopotential (Ehv) of a Cu nanowire array (NA) photocathode and found that Ehv exclusively reduced the apparent activation energy (Ea) of reducing CO2 to CO without affecting the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, the CO production rate was enhanced by 52.6% under plasmon excitation when compared with that under dark conditions. On further incorporation with a polycrystalline Si photovoltaic device, the Cu NA photocathode exhibits good stability in terms of photocurrent and syngas production (CO : H2 = 2 : 1) within 10 h. This work validates the crucial role of the plasmonic effect of Cu on modulating the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR.

Spatial Distributions of Single-Molecule Reactivity in Plasmonic Catalysis

Plasmonic catalysts have the potential to accelerate and control chemical reactions with light by exploiting localized surface plasmon resonances. However, the mechanisms governing plasmonic catalysis are not simple to decouple. Several plasmon-derived phenomena, such as electromagnetic field enhancements, temperature, or the generation of charge carriers, can affect the reactivity of the system. These effects are convoluted with the inherent (nonplasmonic) catalytic properties of the metal surface. Disentangling these coexisting effects is challenging but is the key to rationally controlling reaction pathways and enhancing reaction rates. This study utilizes super-resolution fluorescence microscopy to examine the mechanisms of plasmonic catalysis at the single-particle level. The reduction reaction of resazurin to resorufin in the presence of Au nanorods coated with a porous silica shell is investigated in situ. This allows the determination of reaction rates with a single-molecule sensitivity and subparticle resolution. By variation of the irradiation wavelength, it is possible to examine two different regimes: photoexcitation of the reactant molecules and photoexcitation of the nanoparticle's plasmon resonance. In addition, the measured spatial distribution of reactivity allows differentiation between superficial and far-field effects. Our results indicate that the reduction of resazurin can occur through more than one reaction pathway, being most efficient when the reactant is photoexcited and is in contact with the Au surface. In addition, it was found that the spatial distribution of enhancements varies, depending on the underlying mechanism. These findings contribute to the fundamental understanding of plasmonic catalysis and the rational design of future plasmonic nanocatalysts.

Photo-enhanced dehydrogenation of formic acid on Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures

Coupling visible light with Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures has effectively enhanced formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation at room temperature. Unlike conventional heating to achieve higher product yield, the plasmonic effect supplies a unique surface environment through the local electromagnetic field and hot charge carriers, avoiding unfavorable energy consumption and attenuated selectivity. In this minireview, we summarized the latest advances in plasmon-enhanced FA dehydrogenation, including geometry/size-dependent dehydrogenation activities, and further catalytic enhancement by coupling local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with Fermi level engineering or alloying effect. Furthermore, some representative cases were taken to interpret the mechanisms of hot charge carriers and the local electromagnetic field on molecular adsorption/activation. Finally, a summary of current limitations and future directions was outlined from the perspectives of mechanism and materials design for the field of plasmon-enhanced FA decomposition.

Defect engineering enhances plasmonic-hot electrons exploitation for CO2 reduction over polymeric catalysts

Defect sites present on the surface of catalysts serve a crucial role in different catalytic processes. Herein, we have investigated defect engineering within a hybrid system composed of "soft" polymer catalysts and "hard" metal nanoparticles, employing the disparity in their thermal expansions. Electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and mechanistic studies together reveal the formation of new abundant defects and their synergistic integrability with plasmonic enhancement within the hybrid catalyst. These active defects, co-localized with plasmonic Ag nanoparticles, promote the utilization efficiency of hot electrons generated by local plasmons, thereby enhancing the CO2 photoreduction activity while maintaining the high catalytic selectivity.

Honeycomb-like Ag Nanocavity Array for SERS Observations Using Plasmon-Mediated Chemical Reactions

Organized two-dimensional polystyrene bead arrays perform ion etching, and protruding nanostructures are created on polystyrene beads due to the shadow effects from the ring beads, leading to nucleus selection and growth in Au nanostructure deposition. Ag nanostructures are prepared via plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs), leading to the Ag nanocavity geometry of the honeycomb pattern when the etching time and Ag growth time are tuned. Due to the strong electromagnetic coupling, the Ag honeycomb-shaped nanocavity array works as the SERS substrate with high sensitivity and good repeatability, which is used to detect thiram pesticide residues with a concentration down to 10-9 M.

Nonadiabatic dynamics near metal surfaces under Floquet engineering: Floquet electronic friction vs Floquet surface hopping

In the previous study Wang and Dou [J. Chem. Phys. 158, 224109 (2023)], we have derived a Floquet classical master equation (FCME) to treat nonadiabatic dynamics near metal surfaces under Floquet engineering. We have also proposed a trajectory surface hopping algorithm to solve the FCME. In this study, we map the FCME into a Floquet Fokker-Planck equation in the limit of fast Floquet driving and fast electron motion as compared to nuclear motion. The Fokker-Planck equation is then being solved using Langevin dynamics with explicit friction and random force from the nonadiabatic effects of hybridized electrons and Floquet states. We benchmark the Floquet electronic friction dynamics against Floquet quantum master equation and Floquet surface hopping. We find that Floquet driving results in a violation of the second fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which further gives rise to heating effects.

Promises of Plasmonic Antenna-Reactor Systems in Gas-Phase CO2 Photocatalysis

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction provides intriguing opportunities for addressing the energy and environmental crises faced by humans. The rational combination of plasmonic antennas and active transition metal-based catalysts, known as "antenna-reactor" (AR) nanostructures, allows the simultaneous optimization of optical and catalytic performances of photocatalysts, and thus holds great promise for CO2 photocatalysis. Such design combines the favorable absorption, radiative, and photochemical properties of the plasmonic components with the great catalytic potentials and conductivities of the reactor components. In this review, recent developments of photocatalysts based on plasmonic AR systems for various gas-phase CO2 reduction reactions with emphasis on the electronic structure of plasmonic and catalytic metals, plasmon-driven catalytic pathways, and the role of AR complex in photocatalytic processes are summarized. Perspectives in terms of challenges and future research in this area are also highlighted.

Vibrationally Hot Reactants in a Plasmon-Assisted Chemical Reaction

Recent studies on plasmon-assisted chemical reactions postulate that the hot electrons of plasmon-excited nanostructures may induce a non-thermal vibrational activation of metal-bound reactants. However, the postulate has not been fully validated at the level of molecular quantum states. We directly and quantitatively prove that such activation occurs on plasmon-excited nanostructures: The anti-Stokes Raman spectra of reactants undergoing a plasmon-assisted reaction reveal that a particular vibrational mode of the reactant is selectively excited, such that the reactants possess >10 times more energy in the mode than is expected from the fully thermalized molecules at the given local temperature. Furthermore, a significant portion (∼20%) of the excited reactant is in vibrational overtone states with energies exceeding 0.5 eV. Such mode-selective multi-quantum excitation could be fully modeled by the resonant electron-molecule scattering theory. Such observations suggest that the vibrationally hot reactants are created by non-thermal hot electrons, not by thermally heated electrons or phonons of metals. The result validates the mechanism of plasmon-assisted chemical reactions and further offers a new method to explore the vibrational reaction control on metal surfaces.

Surface plasmon-enhanced photo-driven CO2 hydrogenation by hydroxy-terminated nickel nitride nanosheets

The majority of visible light-active plasmonic catalysts are often limited to Au, Ag, Cu, Al, etc., which have considerations in terms of costs, accessibility, and instability. Here, we show hydroxy-terminated nickel nitride (Ni₃N) nanosheets as an alternative to these metals. The Ni₃N nanosheets catalyze CO₂ hydrogenation with a high CO production rate (1212 mmol g^-1 h^-1) and selectivity (99%) using visible light. Reaction rate shows super-linear power law dependence on the light intensity, while quantum efficiencies increase with an increase in light intensity and reaction temperature. The transient absorption experiments reveal that the hydroxyl groups increase the number of hot electrons available for photocatalysis. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy shows that the CO₂ hydrogenation proceeds via the direct dissociation pathway. The excellent photocatalytic performance of these Ni₃N nanosheets (without co-catalysts or sacrificial agents) is suggestive of the use of metal nitrides instead of conventional plasmonic metal nanoparticles.

Controllable CO2 Reduction or Hydrocarbon Oxidation Driven by Entire Solar via Silver Quantum Dots Direct Photocatalysis

The current solar-chemical-industry based on semiconductor photocatalyst is impractical. Metal catalysts are extensively employed in thermal- and electro-catalysis industries, but unsuitable for direct-driven photocatalysis. Herein, silver quantum dots (Ag-QDs) are synthesized on support via an in situ photoreduction method, and in situ photocatalysis temperature programmed dynamics chemisorption desorption analyses are designed to demonstrate that Ag-QDs should be the actual photocatalytic sites. The surface plasmon resonance of Ag-QDs could harvests entire visible solar, and the plasmon-driven charge-transfer exhibits opposite directions at the interface when supports are different. Consequently, Ag-QDs could be alternatively regulated as oxidation or reduction active centers. Furthermore, Ag-QDs excite electron tunneling transfer with adsorbate, which does not generate high-energy free-radical intermediates. As a result, the efficiencies of hydrocarbon photooxidation and CO₂ photoreduction are improved in several orders of magnitude. Evidently, the Ag-QDs direct photocatalytic technology greatly promotes solar-chemical-industry applications.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Niche Applications of MXene Materials in Photothermal Catalysis

MXene materials have found emerging applications as catalysts for chemical reactions due to their intriguing physical and chemical applications. In particular, their broad light response and strong photothermal conversion capabilities are likely to render MXenes promising candidates for photothermal catalysis, which is drawing increasing attention in both academic research and industrial applications. MXenes are likely to satisfy all three criteria of a desirable photothermal catalyst: strong light absorption, effective heat management, and versatile surface reactivity. However, their specific functionalities are largely dependent on their structure and composition, which makes understandings of the structure–function relationship of crucial significance. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress of MXene–based photothermal catalysts, emphasizing the functionalities and potential applications of MXene materials in fields of photothermal catalysis, and provide insights on design principles of highly efficient MXene–based photothermal catalysts from the atomic scale. This review provides a relatively thorough understanding of MXene–based materials for photothermal catalysis, as well as an in–depth investigation of emerging high-prospect applications in photothermal catalysis.

Silver nanoparticle enhanced metal-organic matrix with interface-engineering for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Integrating plasmonic nanoparticles into the photoactive metal-organic matrix is highly desirable due to the plasmonic near field enhancement, complementary light absorption, and accelerated separation of photogenerated charge carriers at the junction interface. The construction of a well-defined, intimate interface is vital for efficient charge carrier separation, however, it remains a challenge in synthesis. Here we synthesize a junction bearing intimate interface, composed of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and matrix with silver node via a facile one-step approach. The plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles on the matrix is visualized through electron energy loss mapping. Moreover, charge carrier transfer from the plasmonic nanoparticles to the matrix is verified through ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and in-situ photoelectron spectroscopy. The system delivers highly efficient visible-light photocatalytic H₂ generation, surpassing most reported metal-organic framework-based photocatalytic systems. This work sheds light on effective electronic and energy bridging between plasmonic nanoparticles and organic semiconductors.

Simple and Tailorable Synthesis of Silver Nanoplates in Gram Quantities

Due to plasmonic and catalytic properties, silver nanoplates are of significant interest; therefore, their simple preparation in gram quantities is required. Preferably, the method is seedless, consists of few reagents, enables preparation of silver nanoplates with desired optical properties in high concentration, is scalable, and allows their long-term storage. The developed method is based on silver nitrate, sodium borohydride, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and H₂O₂ as the main reagents, while antifoam A204 is implemented to achieve better product quality on a larger scale. The effect of each component was evaluated and optimized. Solution volumes from 3 to 450 mL and concentrations of silver nanoplates from 0.88 to 4.8 g/L were tested. Their size was tailored from 25 nm to 8 μm simply by H₂O₂ addition, covering the entire visible plasmon spectra and beyond. They can be dried and spontaneously dispersed after at least one month of storage in the dark without any change in plasmonic properties. Their potential use in modern art was demonstrated by drying silver colloids on different surfaces in the presence of reagents or purified, resulting in a variety of colors but, more importantly, patterns of varying complexity, from simple multi-coffee-rings structures to dendritic forms and complex multilevel Sierpiński triangle fractals.

Plasmon-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Conductive Polymer-Based Nano-Heterojunction for Small Molecule Metabolites Diagnostics

Conductive polymers are promising electrode candidates in the nonenzymatic catalytic detection of small molecule metabolites, due to the tunable electronic conductivity and versatile modifiability. However, the complex catalytic reaction pathway of conductive polymers results in lower detection sensitivity and a narrower linear range compared with clinical metal-based and carbon-based electrodes. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), characterized by deep strong light-matter coupling, has great potential in driving surface catalytic reactions at an ultrafast rate. Here, we constructed a salix argyracea-like polypyrrole nanowires/silver nanoparticles (PPy/AgNPs) heterojunction electrode using polydopamine as a dopant and chelator. Through cyclic voltammetry, the Mott-Schottky curve, and COMSOL simulation, we demonstrated that the LSPR-excited photocarriers enhanced PPy/AgNPs electrode electrocatalysis. Thus, the detection current response and linear range were significantly improved under the LSPR excitation when taking glucose and hydrogen peroxide as models of small molecule metabolites. Furthermore, we discussed the LSPR-enhanced detection mechanism of PPy/AgNPs electrode from the aspects of the Tafel slope, the apparent electron diffusion coefficient, and the charge transfer resistance. This strategy opens a new avenue toward the design of LSPR-enhanced conductive polymer electrodes.

Plasmonic photocatalysis in aqueous solution: assessing the contribution of thermal effects and evaluating the role of photogenerated ROS

Plasmon-induced photocatalysis can drive photochemical processes with an unprecedented control of reactivity, using light as sole energy source. Nevertheless, disentangling the relative importance of thermal and non-thermal features upon plasmonic excitation remains a difficult task. In this work we intend to separate the role played by the photogenerated charge carriers from thermal mechanisms in the plasmonic photo-oxidation of a model organic substrate in aqueous solution and using a metal-semiconductor hybrid as model photocatalyst. Accordingly, we present a simple set of experimental procedures and simulations that allow us to discard the thermal dissipation upon plasmonic excitation as the main driving force behind these chemical reactions. Moreover, we also study the photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS), discussing their fundamental role in photo-oxidation reactions and the information they provide regarding the reactivity of the photogenerated electrons and holes.

Excited States of Metal-Adsorbed Dimethyl Disulfide: A TDDFT Study with Cluster Model

The optical near field refers to a localized light field near a surface that can induce photochemical phenomena such as dipole-forbidden transitions. Recently, the photodissociation of the S–S bond of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) was investigated using a scanning tunneling microscope with far- and near-field light. This reaction is thought to be initiated by the lowest-energy highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) transition of the DMDS molecule under far-field light. In near-field light, photodissociation proceeds at lower photon energies than in far-field light. To gain insight into the underlying mechanism, we theoretically investigated the excited states of DMDS adsorbed on Cu and Ag surfaces modeled by a tetrahedral 20-atom cluster. The frontier orbitals of the molecule were delocalized by the interaction with the metal, resulting in narrowing of the HOMO–LUMO gap energy. The excited-state distribution was analyzed using the Mulliken population analysis, decomposing molecular orbitals into metal and DMDS fragments. The excited states of the intra-DMDS transitions were found over a wider energy range, but at low energies, their oscillator strengths were negligible, which is consistent with the experimental results. Sparse modeling analysis showed that typical electronic transitions differed between the higher and lower excited states. If these low-lying excited states are efficiently excited by near-field light with different selection rules, the S–S bond dissociation reaction can proceed.
