Spiers Memorial Lecture: New directions in molecular scattering

The field of molecular scattering is reviewed as it pertains to gas-gas as well as gas-surface chemical reaction dynamics. We emphasize the importance of collaboration of experiment and theory, from which new directions of research are being pursued on increasingly complex problems. We review both experimental and theoretical advances that provide the modern toolbox available to molecular-scattering studies. We distinguish between two classes of work. The first involves simple systems and uses experiment to validate theory so that from the validated theory, one may learn far more than could ever be measured in the laboratory. The second class involves problems of great complexity that would be difficult or impossible to understand without a partnership of experiment and theory. Key topics covered in this review include crossed-beams reactive scattering and scattering at extremely low energies, where quantum effects dominate. They also include scattering from surfaces, reactive scattering and kinetics at surfaces, and scattering work done at liquid surfaces. The review closes with thoughts on future promising directions of research.

Reminiscences of Half a Century of Life in the World of Theoretical Physics

Selma Lagerlöf said that culture is what remains when one has forgotten everything we had learned. Without any warranty, through ongoing research tasks, that I will ever attain this high level of wisdom, I simply share here reminiscences that have played, during my life, an important role in my incursions in science, mainly in theoretical physics. I end by presenting some perspectives for future developments.

Superstatistics from a dynamical perspective: Entropy and relaxation

Distributions that deviate from equilibrium predictions are commonly observed across a broad spectrum of systems, ranging from laboratory experiments to astronomical phenomena. These distributions are generally regarded as a manifestation of a quasiequilibrium state and can very often be represented as a superposition of statistics, i.e., superstatistics. The underlying idea in this methodology is that the nonequilibrium system consists of a collection of smaller subsystems that remain infinitely close to equilibrium. This procedure has been effectively implemented in a kinetic setting, but thus far, only in the collisionless regime, limiting its scope of application. In this paper, we address the effect of collisions on the relaxation process and time evolution of superstatistical systems. After confronting the superstatistical distributions with experimental and simulation data, relevant to our analysis, we first study the effect of superstatistics on entropy. We explicitly show that, in the absence of long-range interactions, the extensivity of entropy is preserved, albeit influenced by the specific class of temperature fluctuations. Then, we examine how collisions drive the system towards a global equilibrium state, characterized by a maximum entropy, by employing the relaxation time approximation. This allows us to define a dynamical version of superstatistics, characterized by a singular time-varying parameter q(t), which undergoes a continuous evolution towards equilibrium. We show how this approach enables the determination of the evolution of the underlying temperature distribution under the influence of collisions, which act as stochastic forces, gradually narrowing the temperature distribution over time.

A 22-pole radiofrequency ion trap setup for laboratory astrophysical studies

The formation of large interstellar molecules starting from small reactants constitutes the bottom-up approach in astrochemistry. An experimental setup wherein the ionic reactant is prepared and allowed to react with neutral reactants within a confined interaction space is most desirable for this approach. Here, we present our efforts in constructing a 22-pole radio-frequency ion trap experimental setup that could act as a reaction chamber for the neutral reactant and trapped ions. A compact piezo-based pulsed supersonic expansion discharge source was developed to achieve efficient production of anions, particularly metal-bearing ions. In addition, two other ion sources, namely, the electron impact ion source and the plasma supersonic discharge ion source, were developed to cater to the production of specific ions. The geometry of this experimental setup facilitates photo excitation of trapped ions. The trapping efficiency was studied by trapping SF5+ and SF6- for a few seconds. The control exhibited by various parameters on the efficiency of the trapping is discussed in detail. Potential studies that could be performed with this new experimental setup are also discussed.

Thermal and Quantum Barrier Passage as Potential-Driven Markovian Dynamics

Rapidly progressing laser technologies provide powerful tools to study potential barrier-passage dynamics in physical, chemical, and biological systems with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution and a remarkable chemical and structural specificity. The available theories of barrier passage, however, operate with equations, potentials, and parameters that are best suited for a specific area of research and a specific class of systems and processes. Making connections among these theories is often anything but easy. Here, we address this problem by presenting a unified framework for the description of a vast variety of classical and quantum barrier-passage phenomena, revealing an innate connection between various types of barrier-passage dynamics and providing closed-form equations showing how the signature exponentials in classical and quantum barrier-passage rates relate to and translate into each other. In this framework, the Arrhenius-law kinetics, the emergence of the Gibbs distribution, Hund's molecular wave-packet well-to-well oscillatory dynamics, Keldysh photoionization, and Kramers' escape over a potential barrier are all understood as manifestations of a potential-driven Markovian dynamics whereby a system evolves from a state of local stability. Key to the irreducibility of quantum tunneling to thermally activated barrier passage is the difference in the ways the diffusion-driving potentials emerge in these two tunneling settings, giving rise to stationary states with a distinctly different structure.

Non-additive entropies and statistical mechanics at the edge of chaos: a bridge between natural and social sciences

The Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics constitutes one of the pillars of contemporary theoretical physics. It is constructed upon the other pillars-classical, quantum, relativistic mechanics and Maxwell equations for electromagnetism-and its foundations are grounded on the optimization of the BG (additive) entropic functional [Formula: see text]. Its use in the realm of classical mechanics is legitimate for vast classes of nonlinear dynamical systems under the assumption that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is positive (currently referred to as strong chaos), and its validity has been experimentally verified in countless situations. It fails however when the maximal Lyapunov exponent vanishes (referred to as weak chaos), which is virtually always the case with complex natural, artificial and social systems. To overcome this type of weakness of the BG theory, a generalization was proposed in 1988 grounded on the non-additive entropic functional [Formula: see text]. The index [Formula: see text] and related ones are to be calculated, whenever mathematically tractable, from first principles and reflect the specific class of weak chaos. We review here the basics of this generalization and illustrate its validity with selected examples aiming to bridge natural and social sciences. A versatile 16-pole ion trap setup for investigating photophysics of biomolecular ions

A linear 16-pole ion trap-based experimental setup has been designed, implemented, and characterized to investigate the photophysics of biomolecules in the gas phase. Electrospray ionization is employed to generate the ions in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure. The voltage configuration on the ion funnel, the ion optic device in the first vacuum interface, is used to control the energy of the ions. A home-built quadrupole mass-filter is utilized for the mass-selection of the ions of interest. A 16-pole ion trap designed and built in-house is implemented for ion trapping. The instrument's versatility and capability are showcased by demonstrating the fragmentation patterns of protonated and deprotonated tryptophan, as well as describing the photodetachment decay of deprotonated indole.

Theoretical studies on the kinetics and dynamics of the BeH+ + H2O reaction: comparison with the experiment

The reaction of BeH+ with background gaseous H2O may play a role in qubit loss for quantum information processing with Be+ as trapped ions, and yet its reaction mechanism has not been well understood until now. In this work, a globally accurate, full-dimensional ground-state potential energy surface (PES) for the BeH+ + H2O reaction was constructed by fitting a total of 170 438 ab initio energy points at the level of RCCSD(T)-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ using the fundamental invariant-neural network method. The total root-mean-square error of the final PES was 0.178 kcal mol-1. For comparison, quasi-classical trajectory calculations were carried out on the PES at an experimental temperature of 150 K. The obtained thermal rate constant and product branching ratio of the BeD+ + H2O reaction agreed quite well with experimental results. In addition, the vibrational state distributions and energy disposals of the products were calculated and rationalized using the sudden vector projection model.

Neural complexity through a nonextensive statistical-mechanical approach of human electroencephalograms

The brain is a complex system whose understanding enables potentially deeper approaches to mental phenomena. Dynamics of wide classes of complex systems have been satisfactorily described within q-statistics, a current generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistics. Here, we study human electroencephalograms of typical human adults (EEG), very specifically their inter-occurrence times across an arbitrarily chosen threshold of the signal (observed, for instance, at the midparietal location in scalp). The distributions of these inter-occurrence times differ from those usually emerging within BG statistical mechanics. They are instead well approached within the q-statistical theory, based on non-additive entropies characterized by the index q. The present method points towards a suitable tool for quantitatively accessing brain complexity, thus potentially opening useful studies of the properties of both typical and altered brain physiology.

Senses along Which the Entropy Sq Is Unique

The Boltzmann-Gibbs-von Neumann-Shannon additive entropy SBG=-k∑ipilnpi as well as its continuous and quantum counterparts, constitute the grounding concept on which the BG statistical mechanics is constructed. This magnificent theory has produced, and will most probably keep producing in the future, successes in vast classes of classical and quantum systems. However, recent decades have seen a proliferation of natural, artificial and social complex systems which defy its bases and make it inapplicable. This paradigmatic theory has been generalized in 1988 into the nonextensive statistical mechanics-as currently referred to-grounded on the nonadditive entropy Sq=k1-∑ipiqq-1 as well as its corresponding continuous and quantum counterparts. In the literature, there exist nowadays over fifty mathematically well defined entropic functionals. Sq plays a special role among them. Indeed, it constitutes the pillar of a great variety of theoretical, experimental, observational and computational validations in the area of complexity-plectics, as Murray Gell-Mann used to call it. Then, a question emerges naturally, namely In what senses is entropy Sq unique? The present effort is dedicated to a-surely non exhaustive-mathematical answer to this basic question.

Brief Review on the Connection between the Micro-Canonical Ensemble and the Sq-Canonical Probability Distribution

Non-standard thermostatistical formalisms derived from generalizations of the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy have attracted considerable attention recently. Among the various proposals, the one that has been most intensively studied, and most successfully applied to concrete problems in physics and other areas, is the one associated with the Sq non-additive entropies. The Sq-based thermostatistics exhibits a number of peculiar features that distinguish it from other generalizations of the Boltzmann-Gibbs theory. In particular, there is a close connection between the Sq-canonical distributions and the micro-canonical ensemble. The connection, first pointed out in 1994, has been subsequently explored by several researchers, who elaborated this facet of the Sq-thermo-statistics in a number of interesting directions. In the present work, we provide a brief review of some highlights within this line of inquiry, focusing on micro-canonical scenarios leading to Sq-canonical distributions. We consider works on the micro-canonical ensemble, including historical ones, where the Sq-canonical distributions, although present, were not identified as such, and also more resent works by researchers who explicitly investigated the Sq-micro-canonical connection.
