Prominent Role of Charge Transfer in the Spectral Tuning of Photosynthetic Light-Harvesting I Complex

Purple bacteria possess two ring-shaped protein complexes, light-harvesting 1 (LH1) and 2 (LH2), both of which function as antennas for solar energy utilization for photosynthesis but exhibit distinct absorption properties. The two antennas have differing amounts of bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a; however, their significance in spectral tuning remains elusive. Here, we report a high-precision evaluation of the physicochemical factors contributing to the variation in absorption maxima between LH1 and LH2, namely, BChl a structural distortion, protein electrostatic interaction, excitonic coupling, and charge transfer (CT) effects, as derived from detailed spectral calculations using an extended version of the exciton model, in the model purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. Spectral analysis confirmed that the electronic structure of the excited state in LH1 extended to the BChl a 16-mer. Further analysis revealed that the LH1-specific redshift (∼61% in energy) is predominantly accounted for by the CT effect resulting from the closer inter-BChl distance in LH1 than in LH2. Our analysis explains how LH1 and LH2, both with chemically identical BChl a chromophores, use distinct physicochemical effects to achieve a progressive redshift from LH2 to LH1, ensuring efficient energy transfer to the reaction center special pair.

Physics-Informed Masked Autoencoder for active sparse imaging

Imaging technology based on detecting individual photons has seen tremendous progress in recent years, with broad applications in autonomous driving, biomedical imaging, astronomical observation, and more. Comparing with conventional methods, however, it takes much longer time and relies on sparse and noisy photon-counting data to form an image. Here we introduce Physics-Informed Masked Autoencoder (PI-MAE) as a fast and efficient approach for data acquisition and image reconstruction through hardware implementation of the MAE (Masked Autoencoder). We examine its performance on a single-photon LiDAR system when trained on digitally masked MNIST data. Our results show that, with 1.8 × 10 - 6 or less detected photons per pulse and down to 9 detected photons per pixel, it achieves high-quality image reconstruction on unseen object classes with 90% physical masking. Our results highlight PI-MAE as a viable hardware accelerator for significantly improving the performance of single-photon imaging systems in photon-starving applications.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics with Exact Factorization: Implementation and Assessment

In this work, we report our implementation of several independent-trajectory mixed-quantum-classical (ITMQC) nonadiabatic dynamics methods based on exact factorization (XF) in the Libra package for nonadiabatic and excited-state dynamics. Namely, the exact factorization surface hopping (SHXF), mixed quantum-classical dynamics (MQCXF), and mean-field (MFXF) are introduced. Performance of these methods is compared to that of several traditional surface hopping schemes, such as the fewest-switches surface hopping (FSSH), branching-corrected surface hopping (BCSH), and the simplified decay of mixing (SDM), as well as conventional Ehrenfest (mean-field, MF) method. Based on a comprehensive set of 1D model Hamiltonians, we find the ranking SHXF ≈ MQCXF > BCSH > SDM > FSSH ≫ MF, with the BCSH sometimes outperforming the XF methods in terms of describing coherences. Although the MFXF method can yield reasonable populations and coherences for some cases, it does not conserve the total energy and is therefore not recommended. We also find that the branching correction for auxiliary trajectories is important for the XF methods to yield accurate populations and coherences. However, the branching correction can worsen the quality of the energy conservation in the MQCXF. Finally, we find that using the time-dependent Gaussian width approximation used in the XF methods for computing decoherence correction can improve the quality of energy conservation in the MQCXF dynamics. The parameter-free scheme of Subotnik for computing the Gaussian widths is found to deliver the best performance in situations where such widths are not known a priori.

Practical Method for Achieving Single-Photon Femtosecond Time-Resolved Spectroscopy: Transient Stimulated Emission

Recent advances in single-photon femtosecond spectroscopy have highlighted the power of entangled photons in probing the properties of materials, previously inaccessible through semiclassical spectroscopic approaches. In this study, we theoretically propose a new single-photon-based femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy technique termed single-photon transient stimulated emission (SP-TSE). SP-TSE not only enables the selective investigation of singly excited superposition states but also harnesses the quantum mechanical nature of photons for the efficient data acquisition of transient responses, thereby supporting the feasibility of experimental realization of SP-TSE. The key aspect of SP-TSE is the selective detection of two-photon states produced through stimulated emission using coincidence counting techniques. Our theoretical framework, supported by numerical simulations, demonstrates the efficacy in capturing the pure decoherence dynamics of a model molecular cavity, highlighting its potential to reveal quantum mechanical properties that are difficult to observe with semiclassical femtosecond time-resolved experiments.

Mid-infrared single-photon upconversion spectroscopy enabled by nonlocal wavelength-to-time mapping

Ultrasensitive spectroscopy is an essential component in mid-infrared (MIR) technology. However, the drawbacks of MIR detectors pose challenges to robust MIR spectroscopy at the single-photon level. We propose an MIR single-photon frequency upconversion spectroscopy nonlocally mapping the MIR information to the time domain. Broadband MIR photons from spontaneous parametric downconversion are frequency-upconverted to the near-infrared band with quantum correlation preservation. Via the group delay of fiber, the MIR spectral information within a 1.18-micrometer bandwidth of 2.76 to 3.94 micrometers is then successfully projected to arrival times of correlated photon pairs. Under the conditions of 6.4 × 106 photons per second illumination, the transmission spectra of polymers with single-photon sensitivity are demonstrated using single-pixel detectors. The developed approach circumvents scanning and frequency selection instability, which stands out for its inherent compatibility for evolving environments and scalability for various wavelengths. Because of its high sensitivity and robustness, characterization of biochemical samples and weak measurement of quantum systems are possible to foresee.

Stabilization of Charge-Transfer Excited States in Biological Systems: A Computational Focus on the Special Pair in Photosystem II Reaction Centers

Charge-transfer (CT) excited states play an important role in many biological processes. However, many computational approaches often inadequately address the equilibration effects of nuclear and environmental degrees of freedom on these states. One prominent example of systems in which CT states are of utmost importance is reaction centers (RC) in photosystems. Here we use a multiscale approach combined with time-dependent density functional theory to explore the lowest CT excited state of the special pair PD1-PD2 in the Photosystem II-RC of a cyanobacterium. We find that the nonequilibrium CT excited state resides near the Soret band, making an exciton the lowest-energy excited state. However, accounting for nuclear and state-specific dielectric equilibration along the CT potential energy surface (PES), the CT state PD1--PD2+ stabilizes energetically below the excitonic state. This underscores the crucial role of state-specific solvation in mapping the PES of CT states, as demonstrated in a simplified dimer model.

Two-photon absorption cross sections of pulsed entangled beams

Entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) could form the basis of nonlinear quantum spectroscopy at very low photon fluxes, since, at sufficiently low photon fluxes, ETPA scales linearly with the photon flux. When different pairs start to overlap temporally, accidental coincidences are thought to give rise to a "classical" quadratic scaling that dominates the signal at large photon fluxes and, thus, recovers a supposedly classical regime, where any quantum advantage is thought to be lost. Here, we scrutinize this assumption and demonstrate that quantum-enhanced absorption cross sections can persist even for very large photon numbers. To this end, we use a minimal model for quantum light, which can interpolate continuously between the entangled pair and a high-photon-flux limit, to analytically derive ETPA cross sections and the intensity crossover regime. We investigate the interplay between spectral and spatial degrees of freedom and how linewidth broadening of the sample impacts the experimentally achievable enhancement.

Observing thermal lensing with quantum light

The introduction of quantum methods in spectroscopy can provide enhanced performance and technical advantages in the management of noise. We investigate the application of quantum illumination in a pump and probe experiment. Thermal lensing in a suspension of gold nanorods is explored using a classical beam as the pump and the emission from parametric downconversion as the probe. We obtain an insightful description of the behavior of the suspension under pumping with a method known to provide good noise rejection. Our findings are a further step toward investigating the effects of quantum light in complex plasmonic media.

Supercontinuum intrinsic fluorescence imaging heralds free view of living systems

Optimal imaging strategies remain underdeveloped to maximize information for fluorescence microscopy while minimizing the harm to fragile living systems. Taking hint from the supercontinuum generation in ultrafast laser physics, we generated supercontinuum fluorescence from untreated unlabeled live samples before nonlinear photodamage onset. Our imaging achieved high-content cell phenotyping and tissue histology, identified bovine embryo polarization, quantified aging-related stress across cell types and species, demystified embryogenesis before and after implantation, sensed drug cytotoxicity in real-time, scanned brain area for targeted patching, optimized machine learning to track small moving organisms, induced two-photon phototropism of leaf chloroplasts under two-photon photosynthesis, unraveled microscopic origin of autumn colors, and interrogated intestinal microbiome. The results enable a facility-type microscope to freely explore vital molecular biology across life sciences.

A quantum trajectory picture of single photon absorption and energy transport in photosystem II

We use quantum trajectory theory to study the dynamics of the first step in photosynthesis for a single photon interacting with photosystem II (PSII). By considering individual trajectories we are able to look beyond the ensemble average dynamics to compute the PSII system evolution conditioned upon individual photon counting measurements. Measurements of the transmitted photon beam strongly affects the system state, since detection of an outgoing photon confirms that the PSII must be in the electronic ground state, while a null measurement implies it is in an excited electronic state. We show that under ideal conditions, observing the null result transforms a state with a low excited state population to a state with nearly all population contained in the excited states. We study the PSII dynamics conditioned on such photon counting for both a pure excitonic model of PSII and a more realistic model with exciton-phonon coupling to a dissipative phononic environment. In the absence of such coupling, we show that the measured fluorescence rates show oscillations constituting a photon-counting witness of excitonic coherence. Excitonic coupling to the phonon environment has a strong effect on the observed rates of fluorescence, damping the oscillations. Addition of non-radiative decay and incoherent transitions to radical pair states in the reaction center to the phononic model allows extraction of a quantum efficiency of 92.5% from the long-time evolution, consistent with bulk experimental measurements.

Probing exciton dynamics with spectral selectivity through the use of quantum entangled photons

Quantum light is increasingly recognized as a promising resource for developing optical measurement techniques. Particular attention has been paid to enhancing the precision of the measurements beyond classical techniques by using nonclassical correlations between quantum entangled photons. Recent advances in the quantum optics technology have made it possible to manipulate spectral and temporal properties of entangled photons, and photon correlations can facilitate the extraction of matter information with relatively simple optical systems compared to conventional schemes. In these respects, the applications of entangled photons to time-resolved spectroscopy can open new avenues for unambiguously extracting information on dynamical processes in complex molecular and materials systems. Here, we propose time-resolved spectroscopy in which specific signal contributions are selectively enhanced by harnessing nonclassical correlations of entangled photons. The entanglement time characterizes the mutual delay between an entangled twin and determines the spectral distribution of photon correlations. The entanglement time plays a dual role as the knob for controlling the accessible time region of dynamical processes and the degrees of spectral selectivity. In this sense, the role of the entanglement time is substantially equivalent to the temporal width of the classical laser pulse. The results demonstrate that the application of quantum entangled photons to time-resolved spectroscopy leads to monitoring dynamical processes in complex molecular and materials systems by selectively extracting desired signal contributions from congested spectra. We anticipate that more elaborately engineered photon states would broaden the availability of quantum light spectroscopy.
