Multifunctional Batteries: Flexible, Transient, and Transparent

The primary task of a battery is to store energy and to power electronic devices. This has hardly changed over the years despite all the progress made in improving their electrochemical performance. In comparison to batteries, electronic devices are continuously equipped with new functions, and they also change their physical appearance, becoming flexible, rollable, stretchable, or maybe transparent or even transient or degradable. Mechanical flexibility makes them attractive for wearable electronics or for electronic paper; transparency is desired for transparent screens or smart windows, and degradability or transient properties have the potential to reduce electronic waste. For fully integrated and self-sufficient systems, these devices have to be powered by batteries with similar physical characteristics. To make the currently used rigid and heavy batteries flexible, transparent, and degradable, the whole battery architecture including active materials, current collectors, electrolyte/separator, and packaging has to be redesigned. This requires a fundamental paradigm change in battery research, moving away from exclusively addressing the electrochemical aspects toward an interdisciplinary approach involving chemists, materials scientists, and engineers. This Outlook provides an overview of the different activities in the field of flexible, transient, and transparent batteries with a focus on the challenges that have to be faced toward the development of such multifunctional energy storage devices.

Self-charging power system for distributed energy: beyond the energy storage unit

Power devices for the smart sensor networks of Internet of things (IoT) are required with minimum or even no maintenance due to their enormous quantities and widespread distribution. Self-charging power systems (SCPSs) refer to integrated energy devices with simultaneous energy harvesting, power management and effective energy storage capabilities, which may need no extra battery recharging and can sustainably drive sensors. Herein, we focus on the progress made in the field of nanogenerator-based SCPSs, which harvest mechanical energy using the Maxwell displacement current arising from the variation in the surface-polarized-charge-induced electrical field. Prototypes of different nanogenerator-based SCPSs will be overviewed. Finally, challenges and prospects in this field will be discussed.

Toward Wearable Self-Charging Power Systems: The Integration of Energy-Harvesting and Storage Devices

One major challenge for wearable electronics is that the state-of-the-art batteries are inadequate to provide sufficient energy for long-term operations, leading to inconvenient battery replacement or frequent recharging. Other than the pursuit of high energy density of secondary batteries, an alternative approach recently drawing intensive attention from the research community, is to integrate energy-generation and energy-storage devices into self-charging power systems (SCPSs), so that the scavenged energy can be simultaneously stored for sustainable power supply. This paper reviews recent developments in SCPSs with the integration of various energy-harvesting devices (including piezoelectric nanogenerators, triboelectric nanogenerators, solar cells, and thermoelectric nanogenerators) and energy-storage devices, such as batteries and supercapacitors. SCPSs with multiple energy-harvesting devices are also included. Emphasis is placed on integrated flexible or wearable SCPSs. Remaining challenges and perspectives are also examined to suggest how to bring the appealing SCPSs into practical applications in the near future.

Refractive index measurement of suspended cells using opposed-view digital holographic microscopy

Opposed-view digital holographic microscopy (OV-DHM) with autofocusing and out-of-focus background suppression was demonstrated and applied to measure the refractive index (RI) of suspended HeLa cells. In OV-DHM, a specimen is illuminated from two sides in a 4π-like configuration. The generated two opposite-view object waves, which have orthogonal polarization orientations, interfere with a common reference wave, and the generated holograms are recorded by a CMOS camera. The image plane of the sample was determined by finding the minimal variation between the two object waves. The out-of-focus background was suppressed by averaging the two object waves. Simultaneous determination of both the cell thickness and the phase retardation was avoided by using a spheroidal model for the detached cell obtained from confocal microscopy. Thus, the RI of suspended HeLa cells was measured from phase images of OV-DHM, with the thickness of the cells estimated by using a constant axial-to-lateral ratio. This measurement strategy reveals the RI with an accuracy of ∼10% of the RI difference between cells and surrounding medium.
