Light penetration-coupled photoisomerization modeling for photodeformation of diarylethene single crystal: upscaling isomerization to macroscopic deformation

Multi-photoresponsive triphenylethylene derivatives with photochromism, photodeformation and room temperature phosphorescence

A series of triphenylethylene derivatives exhibited multi-photoresponsive properties, including photochromism, photodeformation and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), which are strongly related to molecular conformations and packing in the aggregated states. Accordingly, these properties can be subtly adjusted by substituents to the center double bond and/or peripheral phenyl moieties. The introduction of bromine atom was beneficial to photochromism and photodeformation properties as a result of the additional C-H⋯Br interactions and electron-withdrawing property. Also, it can promote the RTP effect via heavy atom effect, resulting in persistent afterglow lasting up to 150 min as detected by chemiluminescent imaging system.

Mechanical Properties and Photomechanical Fatigue of Macro- and Nanodimensional Diarylethene Molecular Crystals

The diarylethene derivative, 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene, undergoes a reversible photoisomerization between its ring-open and ring-closed forms in the solid-state and has applications as a photomechanical material. Mechanical properties of macrocrystals, nanowire single crystals, and amorphous films as a function of multiple sequential UV and visible light exposures have been quantified using atomic force microscopy nanoindentation. The isomerization reaction has no effect on the elastic modulus of each solid. But going from the macro- to the nanowire crystal results in a remarkable over 3-fold decrease in the elastic modulus. The macrocrystal and amorphous solids are highly resistant to photomechanical fatigue, while nanowire crystals show clear evidence of photomechanical fatigue attributed to a transition from crystal to amorphous forms. This study provides first experimental evidence of size-dependent photomechanical fatigue in photoreactive molecular crystalline solids and suggests crystal morphology and size must be considered for future photomechanical applications.

Quantification of photoinduced bending of dynamic molecular crystals: from macroscopic strain to kinetic constants and activation energies

Photomechanically reconfigurable elastic single crystals are the key elements for contactless, timely controllable and spatially resolved transduction of light into work from the nanoscale to the macroscale. The deformation in such single-crystal actuators is observed and usually attributed to anisotropy in their structure induced by the external stimulus. Yet, the actual intrinsic and external factors that affect the mechanical response remain poorly understood, and the lack of rigorous models stands as the main impediment towards benchmarking of these materials against each other and with much better developed soft actuators based on polymers, liquid crystals and elastomers. Here, experimental approaches for precise measurement of macroscopic strain in a single crystal bent by means of a solid-state transformation induced by light are developed and used to extract the related temperature-dependent kinetic parameters. The experimental results are compared against an overarching mathematical model based on the combined consideration of light transport, chemical transformation and elastic deformation that does not require fitting of any empirical information. It is demonstrated that for a thermally reversible photoreactive bending crystal, the kinetic constants of the forward (photochemical) reaction and the reverse (thermal) reaction, as well as their temperature dependence, can be extracted with high accuracy. The improved kinematic model of crystal bending takes into account the feedback effect, which is often neglected but becomes increasingly important at the late stages of the photochemical reaction in a single crystal. The results provide the most rigorous and exact mathematical description of photoinduced bending of a single crystal to date.
