Aluminum plasmonic nanoshielding in ultraviolet inactivation of bacteria

Uncovering the Evolution of Low-Energy Plasmons in Nanopatterned Aluminum Plasmonics on Graphene

We report adjusting the charge-transfer-plasmon (CTP) resonances of aluminum (Al) bowties on suspended monolayer graphene via controlled nanofabrication and focused electron-beam irradiation. CTP resonances of bowties with a conductive junction blue-shift with an increase in junction width, whereas their 3λ/2 and λ resonances barely red-shift. These plasmon modes are derived and confirmed by an LC circuit model and electromagnetic simulations performed with boundary-element and frequency-domain methods. A monotonic decay of the CTP lifetime is observed, while the junction width is extended. Instead, the lifetimes of 3λ/2 and λ resonances are nearly independent of junction width. When the junction is shrunk by electron-beam irradiation, all antenna resonances red-shift. Having created an electron-beam-induced sub 5 nm gap in bowties, we monitor the unambiguous transition of a CTP into a bonding-type gap mode, which is highly sensitive to the separation distance. Meanwhile, the 3λ/2 and λ resonances evolve into dipolar bright and dipolar dark modes.

Advances in Waveguide Bragg Grating Structures, Platforms, and Applications: An Up-to-Date Appraisal

A Bragg grating (BG) is a one-dimensional optical device that may reflect a specific wavelength of light while transmitting all others. It is created by the periodic fluctuation of the refractive index in the waveguide (WG). The reflectivity of a BG is specified by the index modulation profile. A Bragg grating is a flexible optical filter that has found broad use in several scientific and industrial domains due to its straightforward construction and distinctive filtering capacity. WG BGs are also widely utilized in sensing applications due to their easy integration and high sensitivity. Sensors that utilize optical signals for sensing have several benefits over conventional sensors that use electric signals to achieve detection, including being lighter, having a strong ability to resist electromagnetic interference, consuming less power, operating over a wider frequency range, performing consistently, operating at a high speed, and experiencing less loss and crosstalk. WG BGs are simple to include in chips and are compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing processes. In this review, WG BG structures based on three major optical platforms including semiconductors, polymers, and plasmonics are discussed for filtering and sensing applications. Based on the desired application and available fabrication facilities, the optical platform is selected, which mainly regulates the device performance and footprint.

Mechanism of transient photothermal inactivation of bacteria using a wavelength-tunable nanosecond pulsed laser

There is a great demand for novel disinfection technologies to inactivate various pathogenic viruses and bacteria. In this situation, ultraviolet (UVC) disinfection technologies seem to be promising because biocontaminated air and surfaces are the major media for disease transmission. However, UVC is strongly absorbed by human cells and protein components; therefore, there are concerns about damaging plasma components and causing dermatitis and skin cancer. To avoid these concerns, in this study, we demonstrate that the efficient inactivation of bacteria is achieved by visible pulsed light irradiation. The principle of inactivation is based on transient photothermal heating. First, we provide experimental confirmation that extremely high temperatures above 1000 K can be achieved by pulsed laser irradiation. Evidence of this high temperature is directly confirmed by melting gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Inorganic GNPs are used because of their well-established thermophysical properties. Second, we show inactivation behaviour by pulsed laser irradiation. This inactivation behaviour cannot be explained by a simple optical absorption effect. We experimentally and theoretically clarify this inactivation mechanism based on both optical absorption and scattering effects. We find that scattering and absorption play an important role in inactivation because the input irradiation is inherently scattered by the bacteria; therefore, the dose that bacteria feel is reduced. This scattering effect can be clearly shown by a technique that combines stained Escherichia coli and site selective irradiation obtained by a wavelength tunable pulsed laser. By measuring Live/Dead fluorescence microscopy images, we show that the inactivation attained by the transient photothermal heating is possible to instantaneously and selectively kill microorganisms such as Escherichia coli bacteria. Thus, this method is promising for the site selective inactivation of various pathogenic viruses and bacteria in a safe and simple manner.

Antibacterial Effect of Aluminum Surfaces Untreated and Treated with a Special Anodizing Based on Titanium Oxide Approved for Food Contact

One of the main concerns of the food industry is microbial adhesion to food contact surfaces and consequent contamination. We evaluated the potential bacteriostatic/bactericidal efficacy of aluminum surfaces with different large-scale roughness (0.25, 0.5 and 1 μm) before and after the surface treatment with a special anodizing based on titanium oxide nanotechnology (DURALTI®) and after 3 different sanitizing treatments, e.g., UV, alcohol and a natural product named Gold lotion. Four Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 1402, Yersinia enterocolitica ATCC 9610 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27588) and four Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 and Listeria monocytogenes NCTT 10888) bacteria were screened. As far as concerns aluminum surfaces without nanotechnology surface treatment, an overall bacteriostatic effect was observed for all strains with respect to the initial inoculum that was 106 CFU/mL. Conversely, an overall bactericidal effect was observed both for Gram-negative and -positive bacteria on DURALTI®-treated aluminum disks, regardless of roughness and sanitizing treatment. These results are innovative in terms of the great potential of the antibacterial activity of nanotechnologically treated food contact surfaces and their combination with some sanitizing agents that might be exploited in the food industry.

Transient photothermal inactivation of Escherichia coli stained with visible dyes by using a nanosecond pulsed laser

Efficient inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) under visible (532 nm) pulsed light irradiation was achieved by fusion of a visible light-absorbing dye with E. coli. Inactivation experiments showed that 3-log inactivation of E. coli was obtained within 20 min under a 50 kJ/cm² dose. This treatment time and dose magnitude were 10 times faster and 100 times lower, respectively, than the values previously obtained by using a visible femtosecond laser. The mechanism of bacterial death was modeled based on a transient photothermal evaporation effect, where a quantitative evaluation of the temperature increase was given based on the heat transfer equation. As a result of this theoretical analysis, the maximum temperature of the bacteria was correlated with the absorption ratio, pulse energy, and surface-to-volume ratio. An increase in the surface-to-volume ratio with the decreasing size of organic structures leads to the possibility of efficient inactivation of viruses and bacteria under low-dose and non-harmful-visible pulsed light irradiation. Hence, this method can be applied in many fields, such as the instantaneous inactivation of pathogenic viruses and bacteria in a safe and simple manner without damaging large organic structures.

Multi-pulse laser-induced bubble formation and nanoparticle aggregation using MoS2 nanoparticles

Understanding of how particles and light interact in a liquid environment is vital for optical and biological applications. MoS₂ has been shown to enhance nonlinear optical phenomena due to the presence of a direct excitonic resonance. Its use in biological applications is predicated on knowledge of how MoS₂ interacts with ultrafast (< 1 ps) pulses. In this experiment, the interaction between two femtosecond pulses and MoS₂ nanoparticles suspended in liquid is studied. We found that the laser pulses induce bubble formation on the surface of a nanoparticle and a nanoparticle aggregate then forms on the surface of the trapped bubble. The processes of formation of the bubble and the nanoparticle aggregation are intertwined.

Quantum Leap from Gold and Silver to Aluminum Nanoplasmonics for Enhanced Biomedical Applications

Nanotechnology has been used in many biosensing and medical applications, in the form of noble metal (gold and silver) nanoparticles and nanostructured substrates. However, the translational clinical and industrial applications still need improvements of the efficiency, selectivity, cost, toxicity, reproducibility, and morphological control at the nanoscale level. In this review, we highlight the recent progress that has been made in the replacement of expensive gold and silver metals with the less expensive aluminum. In addition to low cost, other advantages of the aluminum plasmonic nanostructures include a broad spectral range from deep UV to near IR, providing additional signal enhancement and treatment mechanisms. New synergistic treatments of bacterial infections, cancer, and coronaviruses are envisioned. Coupling with gain media and quantum optical effects improve the performance of the aluminum nanostructures beyond gold and silver.

Plasmonics for Biosensing

Techniques based on plasmonic resonance can provide label-free, signal enhanced, and real-time sensing means for bioparticles and bioprocesses at the molecular level. With the development in nanofabrication and material science, plasmonics based on synthesized nanoparticles and manufactured nano-patterns in thin films have been prosperously explored. In this short review, resonance modes, materials, and hybrid functions by simultaneously using electrical conductivity for plasmonic biosensing techniques are exclusively reviewed for designs containing nanovoids in thin films. This type of plasmonic biosensors provide prominent potential to achieve integrated lab-on-a-chip which is capable of transporting and detecting minute of multiple bio-analytes with extremely high sensitivity, selectivity, multi-channel and dynamic monitoring for the next generation of point-of-care devices.
