Detecting PM2.5's Correlations between Neighboring Cities Using a Time-Lagged Cross-Correlation Coefficient

Spatio-temporal coupling analysis and tipping points detection of China's coastal integrated land-human activity-ocean system

The coastal zone is typically highly developed and its ocean environment is vastly exposed to the onshore activities. Land-based pollution, as the "metabolite" of terrestrial human activities, significantly impacts the ocean environment. Although numerous studies have investigated these effects, few have quantified the interactions among land-human activity-ocean across both spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we have developed a land-human activity-ocean systemic framework integrating the coupling coordination degree model and tipping point to quantify the spatiotemporal dynamic interaction mechanism among the land-based pollution, human activities, and ocean environment in China from 2001 to 2020. Our findings revealed that the overall coupling coordination degree of the China's coastal zone increased by 36.9 % over last two decades. Furthermore, the effect of human activities on China's coastal environment remained within acceptable thresholds, as no universal tipping points for coastal pollution or ocean environment has been found over the 20-year period. Notably, the lag time for algal blooms, the key indicator of ocean environment health, was found to be 0-3 years in response to the land economic development and 0-4 years in response to land-based pollution. Based on the differences in spatiotemporal interactions among land-human activity-ocean system, we employed cluster analysis to categorize China's coastal provinces into four types and to develop appropriate management measures. Quantifying the interaction mechanism within the land-human activity-ocean system could aid decision-makers in creating sustainable coastal development strategies. This enables efficient use of land and ocean resources, supports coastal conservation and restoration efforts, and fosters effective management recommendations to enhance coastal sustainability and resilience.

Detrending-moving-average-based multivariate regression model for nonstationary series

Dependency between a response variable and the explanatory variables is a relationship of universal concern in various real-world problems. Multivariate linear regression (MLR) is a well-known method to focus on this issue. However, it is limited to dealing with stationary variables. In this work, we develop a MLR framework based on detrending moving average (DMA) analysis to reveal the actual dependency among variables with nonstationary measures. The DMA-based MLR can generate multiscale regression coefficients, which characterize different dependent behavior at different timescales. Artificial tests show that the DMA-MLR model can successfully resist the impact of trends on the studied series and produce more accurate regression coefficients with multiscale. Furthermore, some scale-dependent statistics are developed to deduce some important relationships in three typical DMA-based MLR models, which help us to deeply understand the DMA-MLR models in theory. The application of the proposed DMA-MLR framework to Beijing's air quality index system demonstrates that fine particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5μm (PM_{2.5}) is the dominant pollutant affecting the air quality of Beijing in recent years.

Influenza activity prediction using meteorological factors in a warm temperate to subtropical transitional zone, Eastern China

Influenza activity is subject to environmental factors. Accurate forecasting of influenza epidemics would permit timely and effective implementation of public health interventions, but it remains challenging. In this study, we aimed to develop random forest (RF) regression models including meterological factors to predict seasonal influenza activity in Jiangsu provine, China. Coefficient of determination (R2) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were employed to evaluate the models' performance. Three RF models with optimum parameters were constructed to predict influenza like illness (ILI) activity, influenza A and B (Flu-A and Flu-B) positive rates in Jiangsu. The models for Flu-B and ILI presented excellent performance with MAPEs <10%. The predicted values of the Flu-A model also matched the real trend very well, although its MAPE reached to 19.49% in the test set. The lagged dependent variables were vital predictors in each model. Seasonality was more pronounced in the models for ILI and Flu-A. The modification effects of the meteorological factors and their lagged terms on the prediction accuracy differed across the three models, while temperature always played an important role. Notably, atmospheric pressure made a major contribution to ILI and Flu-B forecasting. In brief, RF models performed well in influenza activity prediction. Impacts of meteorological factors on the predictive models for influenza activity are type-specific.

Lagged multi-affine height correlation analysis for exploring lagged correlations in complex systems

In order to analyze lagged correlations hidden in complex systems, we propose a new method by incorporating a time-lagged operator into the multi-affine height correlation analysis (MA-HCA). Application of this lagged MA-HCA to an artificially simulated example indicates that the method is feasible to successfully detect the existence of lagged correlations. We then apply this method to explore lagged correlations in series arising from three real-world complex systems.

A DFA-based bivariate regression model for estimating the dependence of PM2.5 among neighbouring cities

On the basis of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), we propose a new bivariate linear regression model. This new model provides estimators of multi-scale regression coefficients to measure the dependence between variables and corresponding variables of interest with multi-scales. Numerical tests are performed to illustrate that the proposed DFA-bsaed regression estimators are capable of accurately depicting the dependence between the variables of interest and can be used to identify different dependence at different time scales. We apply this model to analyze the PM2.5 series of three adjacent cities (Beijing, Tianjin, and Baoding) in Northern China. The estimated regression coefficients confirmed the dependence of PM2.5 among the three cities and illustrated that each city has different influence on the others at different seasons and at different time scales. Two statistics based on the scale-dependent t-statistic and the partial detrended cross-correlation coefficient are used to demonstrate the significance of the dependence. Three new scale-dependent evaluation indices show that the new DFA-based bivariate regression model can provide rich information on studied variables.
