Structural and Morphological Evolution for Water-resistant Organic Thermoelectrics

Conductive PEDOT-Dominant Surface of Transparent Electrode Patch via Selective Phase Transfer for Efficient Flexible Photoelectronic Devices

In this study, a conductive patch for a flexible organic optoelectronic device is proposed and implemented using a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) polymer electrode based on a transfer process to achieve its high conductivity with an efficient conductive pathway. This PEDOT-dominant surface is induced by phase inversion during the transfer process owing to the solvent affinity of the PSS phase. The PEDOT:PSS patch formed by the transfer process minimizes the power loss in a flexible optoelectronic device due to the improved charge collection and suppressed leakage current responses. In addition, the bending stability of the flexible photoelectronic device is also enhanced by maintaining performance for 1000 bending cycles. Therefore, in the fabrication of a transparent flexible conductive PEDOT:PSS patch, the transfer process of a conducting polymer constitutes an effective strategy that can improve conductivity and embellished morphology.

Enhanced Electrical Conductivity and Seebeck Coefficient in PEDOT:PSS via a Two-Step Ionic liquid and NaBH4 Treatment for Organic Thermoelectrics

A two-step approach of improving the thermoelectric properties of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) via the addition of the ionic liquid, 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIM:TFSI) and subsequent reduction with NaBH4 is presented. The addition of 2.5 v/v% of EMIM:TFSI to PEDOT:PSS increases the electrical conductivity from 3 S·cm-1 to 1439 S·cm-1 at 40 °C. An additional post treatment using the reducing agent, NaBH4, increases the Seebeck coefficient of the film from 11 µV·K-1 to 30 µV·K-1 at 40 °C. The combined treatment gives an overall improvement in power factor increase from 0.04 µW·m-1·K-2 to 33 µW·m-1·K-2 below 140 °C. Raman and XPS measurements show that the increase in PEDOT:PSS conductivity is due to PSS separation from PEDOT and a conformational change of the PEDOT chains from the benzoid to quinoid molecular orientation. The improved Seebeck coefficient is due to a reduction of charge carriers which is evidenced from the UV-VIS depicting the emergence of polarons.

Enhanced Humid Reliability of Organic Thermoelectrics via Crosslinking with Glycerol

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has shown significant achievements in organic thermoelectrics (TEs) as an alternative for inorganic counterparts. However, PEDOT:PSS films have limited practical applications because their performance is sensitive to humidity. Crosslinking additives are utilized to improve the reliability of PEDOT:PSS film through enhancing hydrophobicity; among these, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a widely-used additive. However, ether groups in PEG induce water molecules in the film through the hydrogen bond, which deteriorates the TE reliability. Here, we enhance the TE reliability of the PEDOT:PSS film using glycerol as an additive through the crosslinking reaction between the hydroxyl group in glycerol and the sulfonic acid in PEDOT:PSS. The TE reliability (1/Power factor (PF)) of PEG solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (PEG solution-treated film) was 57% of its initial absolute value (0 h), after 288 h (two weeks) in a humid environment (95% relative humidity, 27 °C temperature). On the other hand, the glycerol solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol solution-treated film) exhibited superior TE reliability and preserved 75% of its initial 1/PF. Furthermore, glycerol vapor treatment enabled the film to have stronger TE humid reliability, maintaining 82% of its initial 1/PF, with the same condition. This enhancement is attributed to the increased hydrophobicity and lower oxygen content of the glycerol vapor-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol vapor-treated film), which provides little change in the chemical composition of PEDOT:PSS.

Simultaneous improvement in electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of PEDOT:PSS by N2 pressure-induced nitric acid treatment

As a thermoelectric (TE) material suited to applications for recycling waste-heat into electricity through the Seebeck effect, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) is of great interest. Our research demonstrates a comprehensive study of different post-treatment methods with nitric acid (HNO₃) to enhance the thermoelectric properties of PEDOT:PSS. The optimum conditions are obtained when PEDOT:PSS is treated with HNO₃ for 10 min at room temperature followed by passing nitrogen gas (N₂) with a pressure of 0.2 MPa. Upon this treatment, PEDOT:PSS changes from semiconductor-like behaviour to metal-like behaviour, with a simultaneous enhancement in the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient at elevated temperature, resulting in an increase in the thermoelectric power factor from 0.0818 to 94.3 μW m⁻¹ K⁻² at 150 °C. The improvement in the TE properties is ascribed to the combined effects of phase segregation and conformational change of the PEDOT due to the weakened coulombic attraction between PEDOT and PSS chains by nitric acid as well as the pressure of the N₂ gas as a mechanical means.
