Poly (ionic liquid)-Based Breath Figure Films: A New Kind of Honeycomb Porous Films with Great Extendable Capability

Poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide)-endowed spontaneous emulsification during the breath figure process and the formation of membranes with hierarchical pores

The spontaneous emulsification for the formation of water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions needs the help of at least one kind of the third component (surfactant or cosolvent) to stabilize the oil-water interface. Herein, with the water/CS2-soluble polymer poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAM) as a surfactant, the spontaneous formation of water-in-PDEAM/CS2 emulsions is reported for the first time. The strong affinity between PDEAM and water or the increase of PDEAM concentration will accelerate the emulsification process with high dispersed phase content. It is demonstrated that the spontaneous emulsification of condensed water droplets into the PDEAM/CS2 solution occurs during the breath figure process, resulting in porous films with two levels of pore sizes (i.e., micron and submicron). The emulsification degree and the amounts of submicron-sized pores increase with PDEAM concentration and solidifying time of the solution. This work brings about incremental interest in spontaneous emulsification that may happen during the breath figure process. The combination of these two simultaneous processes provides us with an option to build hierarchically porous structures with condensed and emulsified water droplets as templates. Such porous membranes may have great potential in fields such as separation, cell culture, and biosensing.

Solution and Film Self-Assembly Behavior of a Block Copolymer Composed of a Poly(ionic Liquid) and a Stimuli-Responsive Weak Polyelectrolyte

Cu(0)-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization was used to synthesize a poly(ionic liquid), poly[4-vinylbenzyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide] (PVBBImTf2N), a stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte, poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA), and a novel block copolymer formed from these two polymers. The synthesis of the block copolymer, poly[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate]-block-[poly(4-vinylbenzyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide] (PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N), was examined to evaluate the control of "livingness" polymerization, as indicated by molecular weight, characterizations of degree of polymerization, and 1HNMR spectroscopy. 2D DOSY NMR measurements revealed the successful formation of block copolymer and the connection between the two polymer blocks. PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N was further characterized for supramolecular interactions in both the bulk and solution states through FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. While the block copolymer demonstrated similar intermolecular behavior to the PIL homopolymer in the bulk state as indicated by FTIR, hydrogen bonding and counterion interactions in solution were observed in polar organic solvent through 1H NMR measurements. The DLS characterization revealed that the PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N block copolymer forms a network-like aggregated structure due to a combination of hydrogen bonding between the PDMAEMA and PIL group and electrostatic repulsive interactions between PIL blocks. This structure was found to collapse upon the addition of KNO3 while still maintaining hydrogen bonding interactions. AFM-IR analysis demonstrated varied morphologies, with spherical PDMAEMA in PVBBImTf2N matrix morphology exhibited in the region approaching the film center. AFM-IR further revealed signals from silica nano-contaminates, which selectively interacted with the PDMAEMA spheres, demonstrating the potential for the PDMAEMA-b-PVBBImTf2N PIL block copolymer in polymer-inorganic nanoparticle composite applications.

In situ polymerized ionic liquids in polyester fiber composite membranes for detection of trace oil

In situ trace detection on ultra-clean surfaces is an important technology. The polyester fiber (PF) was introduced to serve as the template, to which the ionic liquids were bonded by hydrogen bonding. Polymerized ionic liquids (PIL) in PF were formed by in situ polymerization with the azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and IL. The trace oil on metal surfaces was enriched by the composite membrane based on similar compatibility principle. The absolute recovery of the trace oil ranged from 91%-99% using this composite membrane. In the extraction samples, desirable linear correlations were obtained for trace oil in the range of 1.25-20 mg/mL. It has been proven that a 1 cm² PIL-PF composite membrane can effectively extract as little as 1 mg of lubricating oil on an ultra-clean metal surface of 0.1 m² with the LOD of 0.9 mg/mL, making it a promising material for in situ detection of trace oil on metal surfaces.

Morphological Engineering of Sensing Materials for Flexible Pressure Sensors and Artificial Intelligence Applications

Various morphological structures in pressure sensors with the resulting advanced sensing properties are reviewed comprehensively. Relevant manufacturing techniques and intelligent applications of pressure sensors are summarized in a complete and interesting way. Future challenges and perspectives of flexible pressure sensors are critically discussed.

As an indispensable branch of wearable electronics, flexible pressure sensors are gaining tremendous attention due to their extensive applications in health monitoring, human –machine interaction, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and other fields. In recent years, highly flexible and wearable pressure sensors have been developed using various materials/structures and transduction mechanisms. Morphological engineering of sensing materials at the nanometer and micrometer scales is crucial to obtaining superior sensor performance. This review focuses on the rapid development of morphological engineering technologies for flexible pressure sensors. We discuss different architectures and morphological designs of sensing materials to achieve high performance, including high sensitivity, broad working range, stable sensing, low hysteresis, high transparency, and directional or selective sensing. Additionally, the general fabrication techniques are summarized, including self-assembly, patterning, and auxiliary synthesis methods. Furthermore, we present the emerging applications of high-performing microengineered pressure sensors in healthcare, smart homes, digital sports, security monitoring, and machine learning-enabled computational sensing platform. Finally, the potential challenges and prospects for the future developments of pressure sensors are discussed comprehensively.

One-Step Template-Free Laser Patterning of Metal Microhoneycomb Structures

Metal microhoneycomb structures have received considerable attention as a type of interaction-efficient functional devices owing to their unique morphology and material properties. Microhoneycomb structures are mainly fabricated using the well-known breath-figure method. However, additional post-treatments are required to produce a metal structure because it is a polymer-based process, and this necessitates expensive, complex, and multi-step fabrication processes. Therefore, a simple, low-cost metal honeycomb fabrication process is necessary. In this paper, the laser patterning of an organometallic solution to produce silver microhoneycomb (Ag microhoneycomb) structures is proposed. Various phenomena such as rapid organic evaporation, silver nanoparticle solidification, and material reorganization from Marangoni flow are found to enable patterning-induced microhoneycomb formation. Parametric studies demonstrate that the pore size can be easily controlled through simple laser parameter changes. In addition, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies confirm the potential electrochemical applications of the Ag microhoneycomb structures based on the variation of electrochemical redox behavior depending on the pore size. Owing to the excellent advantages of one-step laser patterning without any templates, the proposed process will likely promote the practical use of the metal microhoneycomb structures.

Iron-containing poly(ionic liquid) membranes: a heterogeneous Fenton reaction and enhanced anti-fouling ability

Iron-containing poly(ionic liquid) membranes were prepared by Cu(0)-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization, which was achieved to catalyze a heterogeneous Fenton reaction and realize self-cleaning of the membrane surface.

Water Droplet Self-Assembly to Au Nanoporous Films with Special Light Trapping and Surface Electromagnetic Field Enhancement

Gold nano "breath figure" films are for the first time reported and their function as ideal systems for plasmonics demonstrated. Metal nano-breath figure substrates are metal thin films containing nanohole arrays supported on a solid substrate. Au nanohole arrays are prepared from the dynamic breath figure phenomenon, in which the pore formation is controlled to provide holes smaller than 100 nm. Au layer is deposited on polymer substrates containing breath figure topology. The breath figure topology can be fully translated to the Au layer. The nanofabrication process is completed within few minutes. A simplified preparation process but very impressive light trapping and surface electromagnetic field enhancement are related to the Au breath figure films obtained in this work. The porous films demonstrated higher absorbance in the region of 500-1100 nm than nonporous Au films. In the case of 10 nm Au film, the plasmon absorbance becomes more intense than the electronic band absorbance. The electromagnetic enhancement is proved by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy effect, which is found to be very close to the maximum possible value predicted for nonresonant species.
