Linear magnetoelectric effect in göthite, α-FeOOH

FeOOH Nanosheets Coupled with ZnCdS Nanoparticles for Highly Improved Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes and Tetracycline in Water

Developing a low-cost and highly efficient semiconductor photocatalyst for the decomposition of organic pollutants and antibiotics is highly desirable. Herein, FeOOH nanosheets were prepared using a liquid-phase stirring technique and combined with ZnCdS (ZCS) nanoparticles to construct FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite photocatalysts. The photocatalytic efficiency of the FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite was evaluated for the decomposition of various pollutants, including rhodamine B, methylene Blue, and tetracycline. The FeOOH/ZCS nanocomposite exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic performance for the decomposition of various organics. Moreover, the optimized FeOOH/ZCS retained more than 90% of its initial photocatalytic activity even after five successful runs. Radical quenching test and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis revealed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) play a dominant role for the decomposition of organics. The FeOOH/ZCS Z-scheme heterojunction significantly facilitates higher charge transfer efficiency and the generation of reactive radicals, resulting in excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. This work offers a new approach to synthesis FeOOH-based photocatalyst for the elimination of organics and antibiotics in water.

Energetic Electron-Assisted Synthesis of Tailored Magnetite (Fe3O4) and Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) Nanoparticles: Structure and Magnetic Properties

Iron oxide nanoparticles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were synthesized by irradiating micro-emulsions containing iron salts with energetic electrons. The properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selective area diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. It was found that formation of superparamagnetic nanoparticles begins at a dose of 50 kGy, though these particles show low crystallinity, and a higher portion is amorphous. With increasing doses, an increasing crystallinity and yield could be observed, which is reflected in an increasing saturation magnetization. The blocking temperature and effective anisotropy constant were determined via zero-field cooling and field cooling measurements. The particles tend to form clusters with a size of 34 nm to 73 nm. Magnetite/maghemite nanoparticles could be identified via selective area electron diffraction patterns. Additionally, goethite nanowires could be observed.

Comparative removal of As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous solution by sulfide-modified α-FeOOH

Efficient elimination of As(V) and Sb(V) from wastewater streams has long been a major challenge. Herein, sulfide-modified α-FeOOH adsorbent was fabricated via a simple sulfidation reaction for removing As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous media. Compared with the pristine α-FeOOH, sulfide-modified α-FeOOH increased the adsorption of As(V) from 153.8 to 384.6 mg/g, and Sb(V) adsorption from 277.8 to 1111.1 mg/g. The enhanced adsorption of both As(V) and Sb(V) was maintained at the pH range from 2 to 11, and was not interfered by various coexisting anions such as Cl^-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, SiO₃^2- and PO₄^3-. The adsorption affinity increased from 0.0047 to 0.0915 and 0.0053 to 0.4091 for As(V) and Sb(V), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation demonstrated a reductive conversion of As(V) to As(III) during the adsorption process with sulfide-modified α-FeOOH, but with no obvious variation of Sb(V) speciation. While the removal mechanism for As(V) was reduction followed by adsorption via hydroxyl groups, mainly surface complexation was involved in the removal of Sb(V). This study presented a simple strategy to enhance the adsorption capacity and adsorption affinity of α-FeOOH toward As(V)/Sb(V) via sulfide-modification.
