A band of bound states in the continuum induced by disorder

Acoustic Higher-Order Weyl Semimetal with Bound Hinge States in the Continuum

Higher-order topological phases have raised widespread interest in recent years with the occurrence of the topological boundary states of dimension two or more less than that of the system bulk. The higher-order topological states have been verified in gapped phases, in a wide variety of systems, such as photonic and acoustic systems, and recently also observed in gapless semimetal phase, such as Weyl and Dirac phases, in systems alike. The higher-order topology is signaled by the hinge states emerging in the common band gaps of the bulk states and the surface states. In this Letter, we report our first prediction and observation of a new type of hinge states, the bound hinge states in the continuum (BHICs) bulk band, in a higher-order Weyl semimetal implemented in phononic crystal. In contrast to the hinge state in gap, which is characterized by the bulk polarization, the BHIC is identified by the nontrivial surface polarization. The finding of the topological BHICs broadens our insight to the topological states, and may stimulate similar researches in other systems such as electronic, photonic, and cold atoms systems. Our Letter may pave the way toward high-Q acoustic devices in application.

Bound states in the continuum (BIC) protected by self-sustained potential barriers in a flat band system

In this work, we investigate the bound states in the continuum (BIC) of a one-dimensional spin-1 flat band system. It is found that, when the potential is sufficiently strong, there exists an effective attractive potential well surrounded by infinitely high self-sustained barriers. Consequently, there exist some BIC in the effective potential well. These bound states are protected by the infinitely high potential barriers, which could not decay into the continuum. Taking a long-ranged Coulomb potential and a short-ranged exponential potential as two examples, the bound state energies are obtained. For a Coulomb potential, there exists a series of critical potential strengths, near which the bound state energy can go to infinity. For a sufficiently strong exponential potential, there exist two different bound states with a same number of wave function nodes. The existence of BIC protected by the self-sustained potential barriers is quite a universal phenomenon in the flat band system under a strong potential. A necessary condition for the existence of BIC is that the maximum of potential is larger than two times band gap.

Topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a topological metal state in a quasi-one-dimensional system

We theoretically report the finding of a new kind of topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a topological metal state where the closing-reopening of bandgap is accompanied by passing the Fermi level through an additional band. The resulting nontrivial topological metal phase is characterized by stable zero-energy localized edge states that exist within the full gapless bulk states. Such states living on a quasi-one-dimensional system with three sublattices per unit cell are protected by hidden inversion symmetry. While other required symmetries such as chiral, particle-hole, or full inversion symmetry are absent in the system.

Ultra-high quality graphene perfect absorbers for high performance switching manipulation

Wavelength-selective light absorption and the related switching operations are highly desired in optical devices. Herein, we report the approach for ultra-high quality (Q) graphene perfect optical absorption, which possesses impressive performance in switching manipulation. A record-breaking Q-factor (up to 10⁵) is observed, suggesting one or two orders of magnitude larger than that of the conventional graphene absorbers. The ultra-low external leakage loss rate of quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) resonator and the ultra-low intrinsic absorption loss rate in the resonant mode volume are the main contributions for the ultra-high Q perfect absorption. By introducing a Kerr nonlinear medium, spectral relative intensity can be changed from 0 to 100% when an ultra-low pump light with the intensity of only 5 kW cm^-2 is used. After a rather slight tuning of the refractive index (Δn = 5×10^-4) for the resonators, the absorption contrast ratio reaches 31 dB. The switching related spectral wavelength shift sensitivity is up to 915 nm/RIU and the figure of merit (FOM) is 50 833. These features confirm the ultra-high tunability and switching manipulation. It is believed that the ultra-high Q-factor absorption offered by all-dielectric configuration provides plentiful potential applications for graphene-based devices in the all-optical switch, modulator, notch filter, etc.

Localisation of weakly interacting bosons in two dimensions: disorder vs lattice geometry effects

We investigate the effects of disorder and lattice geometry against localisation phenomena in a weakly interacting ultracold bosonic gas confined in a 2D optical lattice. The behaviour of the quantum fluid is studied at the mean-field level performing computational experiments, as a function of disorder strength for lattices of sizes similar to current experiments. Quantification of localisation, away from the Bose glass phase, was obtained directly from the stationary density profiles through a robust statistical analysis of the condensate component, as a function of the disorder amplitude. Our results show a smooth transition, or crossover, to localisation induced by disorder in square and triangular lattices. In contrast, associated to its larger tunneling amplitude, honeycomb lattices show absence of localisation for the same range of disorder strengths and same lattice amplitude, while also exhibiting partial localisation for large disorder amplitudes. We also conclude that the coordination number z have a partial influence on how fast this smooth transition occurs as the system size increases. Signatures of disorder are also found in the ground state energy spectrum, where a continuous distribution emerges instead of a distribution of sharp peaks proper to the system in the absence of disorder.

Overcoming randomness does not rule out the importance of inherent randomness for functionality

Randomness is intrinsic to many natural processes. It is also clear that, under certain conditions, disorders are not associated with functionality. Several examples in which overcoming, suppressing, or combining both randomness and non-randomness is required are drawn from various fields. However, the need to suppress or overcome randomness does not negate its importance under certain conditions and its significance in valid processes and organ functions. Randomness should be acknowledged rather than ignored or suppressed; it can be viewed, at worst, as a disturbing disorder that may be treated to produce order, or, at best, as a 'beneficial disorder' that can be considered as a higher level of functionality.

Formation of Bound States in the Continuum in Hybrid Plasmonic-Photonic Systems

A bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a localized state of an open structure with access to radiation channels, yet it remains highly confined with, in theory, an infinite lifetime and quality factor. There have been many realizations of such exceptional states in dielectric systems without loss. However, realizing BICs in lossy systems such as those in plasmonics remains a challenge. In this Letter, we explore the possibility of realizing BICs in a hybrid plasmonic-photonic structure consisting of a plasmonic grating coupled to a dielectric optical waveguide with diverging radiative quality factors. The plasmonic-photonic system supports two distinct groups of BICs: symmetry-protected BICs at the Γ point and off-Γ Friedrich-Wintgen BICs. The photonic waveguide modes are strongly coupled to the gap plasmons in the grating, leading to an avoided crossing behavior with a high value of Rabi splitting of 150 meV. Moreover, we show that the strong coupling significantly alters the band diagram of the hybrid system, revealing opportunities for supporting stopped light at an off-Γ wide angular span.
