Abstract
The reactions of Zn(NO3)2, 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-9H-carbazole (bpycz), and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4dhbdc) or 2-bromoterephthalic acid (Br-1,4-H2bdc) under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions yielded corresponding coordination polymers (CPs) {[Zn(H2dhbdc)(bpycz)]•0.5H2O}n (1) and [Zn(Br-1,4-bdc)(bpycz)]•2DMAc•H2O (2), respectively, with high thermal stability approaching 350 °C. CP 1 adopts a ring-and-rod layer structure, which is topologically described as a 4-connected net with the point symbol of 2•65. Two layers are interpenetrated in parallel interlocking mode to form a double 2D → 2D polyrotaxane entanglement with extra-framework void space of 19.6%. CP 2 has a non-interpenetrating ring-and-rod layer structure of 4-connected 2•65 net topology, with extra-framework void space of 16.6%. Thermally activated 1 and 2 revealed CO2 uptakes of 101.1 and 98.6 cm3 g-1, respectively, at P/P0 = 1 and 195 K. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns confirmed that 1 and 2 both possessed high chemical stability in H2O, CH3OH, acetone, and DMF, and framework stability during gas adsorption-desorption. The H2O suspension of 1 displayed excitation-dependent dual-emissive properties, appearing at 432 nm upon excitation at 300 nm and at 528 nm upon excitation at 365 nm. Of note, 1 was capable of detection of Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ ions in H2O, showing good anti-interference ability, excellent selectivity, and high sensitivity. More interesting, the dual-emissive properties make 1 to be an excellent luminescence chemosensor to screen Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ from a pool of metal ions in H2O upon excitation at 300 nm via luminescence quenching effect and then discriminate Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ upon excitation at 365 nm via luminescence quenching, unaltered, and enhancement responses, respectively. On the other hand, the H2O suspension of 2 demonstrated an excitation-independent emission appearing at around 430 nm, which could be utilized to sensitively detect Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions with good anti-interference ability and excellent selectivity via luminescence quenching effect. Further, 1 and 2 were recyclability and possessed cycling stability. The plausible sensing mechanisms for 1 and 2 toward Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ were also explored in detail.

Abstract
A recently developed computational scheme is employed to interpret changes in the infrared spectra of halogen-bonded systems in terms of intermolecular interaction energy components (electrostatic, exchange, induction, dispersion) taking pyridine⋯perfluorohaloarene complexes as examples. For all complexes, we find a strong linear correlation between the different terms of the interaction-induced changes of the IR band associated with an intermolecular halogen bond stretching mode and the corresponding terms of the interaction energy, which implies that the interaction components play similar roles in both properties. This is not true for other vibrational modes localized in one of the monomers studied here, for which the corresponding interaction-induced changes in IR bands may present a completely different decomposition than the interaction energy.

Abstract
The synthesis of iodine(I) complexes with either benzoimidazole or carbazole-derived sp2 N-containing Lewis bases is described, as well as their corresponding silver(I) complexes. The addition of elemental iodine to the linear two-coordinate Ag(I) complexes produces iodine(I) complexes with a three-center four-electron (3c-4e) [N-I-N]+ bond. The 1 H and 1 H-15 N HMBC NMR studies unambiguously confirm the formation of the complexes in all cases via the [N-Ag-N]+ →[N-I-N]+ cation exchange, with the 15 N NMR chemical shift change between 94 to 111 ppm when compared to the free ligand. The single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies on eight I+ complexes revealed highly symmetrical [N-I-N]+ bonds with I-N bond distances of 2.21-2.26 Å and N-I-N angles of 177-180°, whilst some of the corresponding Ag+ complexes showed a clear deviation from linearity with N-Ag-N angles of ca. 150° and Ag-N bond distances of 2.09-2.18 Å.

Abstract
The bond strength and nature of a set of 32 Togni-like reagents have been investigated at the M062X/def2-TZVP(D) level of theory in acetonitrile described with the SMD continuum solvent model, to rationalize the main factors responsible for their thermodynamic stability in different conformations, and trifluoromethylation capabilities. For the assessment of bond strength, we utilized local stretching force constants and associated bond strength orders, complemented with local features of the electron density to access the nature of the bonds. Bond dissociation energies varied from 31.6 to 79.9 kcal/mol depending on the polarizing power of the ligand trans to CF3 . Based on the analysis of the Laplacian of the density, we propose that the charge-shift bond character plays an important role in the stability of the molecules studied, especially for those containing I-O bonds. New insights on the trans influence and on possible ways to fine-tune the stability of these reagents are provided.

Abstract
The ability to tune the optical features of BODIPY materials in the solid state is essential for their photorelated application and requires efficient control of the crystal packing. In this study, such control of BODIPY supramolecular assemblies was achieved by deliberate design and synthesis of a BODIPY containing a strong halogen-bond (XB) acceptor (-NO2 ) and donor (I, Br) to mediate XB interactions. The di-halogenated structures formed isostructural mono-coordinate motif B3, B4 (1D tubular structure) and symmetric bifurcated motif B4-II (1D zigzag chains structure) through N-O⋅⋅⋅I, Br XB interactions. These XB interactions promote singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing and triplet-to-singlet reverse intersystem crossing due to partial delocalization of oxygen electrons onto Br and I, which leads to unexpected fluorescence enhancement of B4-II. Finally, the indirect optical band gaps of B3, B4 and B4-II were amenable to tuning in the range of 1.85-2.50 eV by XB-driven crystal packings.

Abstract
The formation of a halogen-bond (XB) complex in the excited state was recently reported with a quadrupolar acceptor–donor–acceptor dye in two iodine-based liquids (J. Phys. Chem. Lett.2017, 8, 3927–3932). The ultrafast decay of this excited complex to the ground state was ascribed to an electron transfer quenching by the XB donors. We examined the mechanism of this process by investigating the quenching dynamics of the dye in the S1 state using the same two iodo-compounds diluted in inert solvents. The results were compared with those obtained with a non-halogenated electron acceptor, fumaronitrile. Whereas quenching by fumaronitrile was found to be diffusion controlled, that by the two XB compounds is slower, despite a larger driving force for electron transfer. A Smoluchowski–Collins–Kimball analysis of the excited-state population decays reveals that both the intrinsic quenching rate constant and the quenching radius are significantly smaller with the XB compounds. These results point to much stronger orientational constraint for quenching with the XB compounds, indicating that electron transfer occurs upon formation of the halogen bond.

Abstract
127 I nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy is established as a rapid and robust method to indicate the formation of iodine-nitrogen halogen bonds in co-crystalline powders. Once the relevant spectral frequency range has been established, diagnostic 127 I NQR spectra can be acquired in seconds. The method is demonstrated for a series of co-crystals of 1,4-diiodobenzene. Changes in the 127 I quadrupolar coupling constant (CQ ) by up to 74.4 MHz correlate with the length of the C-I donor covalent bond and inversely with the I⋅⋅⋅N halogen-bond length. The predictive power of this technique is validated on two previously unknown co-crystalline powders prepared mechanochemically. Single-crystal growth via co-sublimation and structure determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction cross-validates the findings. Natural localized molecular-orbital analyses provide insight into the origins of the quadrupolar coupling constants.
