Synthesis and Characterization of MOF-Derived Structures: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Due to their facile tunability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as precursors and templates to construct advanced functional materials with unique and desired chemical, physical, mechanical, and morphological properties. By tuning MOF precursor composition and manipulating conversion processes, various MOF-derived materials commonly known as MOF derivatives can be constructed. The possibility of controlled and predictable properties makes MOF derivatives a preferred choice for numerous advanced technological applications. The innovative synthetic designs besides the plethora of interdisciplinary characterization approaches applicable to MOF derivatives provide the opportunity to perform a myriad of experiments to explore the performance and offer key insight to develop the next generation of advanced materials. Though there are many published works of literature describing various synthesis and characterization techniques of MOF derivatives, it is still not clear how the synthesis mechanism works and what are the best techniques to characterize these materials to probe their properties accurately. In this review, the recent development in synthesis techniques and mechanisms for a variety of MOF derivates such as MOF-derived metal oxides, porous carbon, composites/hybrids, and sulfides is summarized. Furthermore, the details of characterization techniques and fundamental working principles are summarized to probe the structural, mechanical, physiochemical, electrochemical, and electronic properties of MOF and MOF derivatives. The future trends and some remaining challenges in the synthesis and characterization of MOF derivatives are also discussed.

Recent Developments in Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surface Coatings for Biomedical Applications

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), inspired by the Nepenthes pitcher plant, exhibits excellent performances as it has a smooth surface and extremely low contact angle hysteresis. Biomimetic SLIPS attracts considerable attention from the researchers for different applications in self-cleaning, anti-icing, anticorrosion, antibacteria, antithrombotic, and other fields. Hence, SLIPS has shown promise for applications across both the biomedical and industrial fields. However, the manufacturing of SLIPS with strong bonding ability to different substrates and powerful liquid locking performance remains highly challenging. In this review, a comprehensive overview of research on SLIPS for medical applications is conducted, and the design parameters and common fabrication methods of such surfaces are summarized. The discussion extends to the mechanisms of interaction between microbes, cells, proteins, and the liquid layer, highlighting the typical antifouling applications of SLIPS. Furthermore, it identifies the potential of utilizing the controllable factors provided by SLIPS to develop innovative materials and devices aimed at enhancing human health.

Facile Preparation of Robust Superamphiphobic Coatings on Complex Substrates via Nonsolvent-Induced Phase Separation

Superamphiphobic surfaces have great potential in many fields but often suffer from complicated, expensive, and time-consuming preparation methods, difficulty in applying them on complex substrates, and low stability. Herein, we show a facile fabrication of robust superamphiphobic coatings on complex substrates. A stock suspension was prepared by nonsolvent-induced phase separation of a silicone-modified polyurethane (Si-PU) adhesive containing fluorinated silica (FD-silica) nanoparticles. Then, superamphiphobic surfaces could be easily fabricated via dip coating in the suspension. The influences of phase separation and Si-PU/FD-silica ratio on the wettability and morphology of the coatings were studied. The coatings feature a microscale dense and nanoscale rough texture due to phase separation and rapid solvent evaporation, which enhances the stability by forming strong linkages among the nanoparticles while achieving high superamphiphobicity by trapping air stably in the nanopores. Consequently, the coatings show excellent static/dynamic superamphiphobicity, superior impalement resistance, and good mechanical, chemical, thermal, and UV aging stability. Additionally, the coatings have good anti-icing performance as demonstrated by the greatly extended water freezing time and weakened ice adhesion force in both simulated and real conditions.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as multifunctional nanoplatform for anticorrosion surfaces and coatings

Corrosion of metallic materials is a long-standing problem in many engineering fields. Various organic coatings have been widely applied in anticorrosion of metallic materials over the past decades. However, the protective performance of many organic coatings is limited due to the undesirable local failure of the coatings caused by micro-pores and cracks in the coating matrix. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based surfaces and coatings (MOFBSCs) have exhibited great potential in constructing protective materials on metallic substrates with efficient and durable anticorrosion performance. The tailorable porous structure, flexible composition, numerous active sites, and controllable release properties of MOFs make them an ideal platform for developing various protective functionalities, such as self-healing property, superhydrophobicity, and physical barrier against corrosion media. MOFs-based anticorrosion surfaces and coatings can be divided into two categories: the composite surfaces/coatings using MOFs-based passive/active nanofillers and the surfaces/coatings using MOFs as functional substrate support. In this work, the state-of-the-art fabrication strategies of the MOFBSCs are systematically reviewed. The anticorrosion mechanisms of MOFBSCs and functions of the MOFs in the coating matrix are discussed accordingly. Additionally, we highlight both traditional and emerging electrochemical techniques for probing protective performances and mechanisms of MOFBSCs. The remaining challenging issues and perspectives are also discussed.

Recent advances in bioinspired superhydrophobic ice-proof surfaces: challenges and prospects

Bionic superhydrophobic ice-proof surfaces inspired by natural biology show great potential in daily life. They have attracted wide research interest due to their promising and wide applications in offshore equipment, transportation, power transmission, communication, energy, etc. The flourishing development of superhydrophobic ice-proof surfaces has been witnessed due to the availability of various fabrication methods. These surfaces can effectively inhibit the accumulation of ice, thereby ensuring the safety of human life and property. This review highlights the latest advances in bio-inspired superhydrophobic ice-proof materials. Firstly, several familiar cold-resistant creatures with well-organized texture structures are listed briefly, which provide an excellent template for the design of bioinspired ice-proof surfaces. Next, the advantages and disadvantages of the current techniques for the preparation of superhydrophobic ice-proof surfaces are also analyzed in depth. Subsequently, the theoretical knowledge on icing formation and three passive ice-proof strategies are introduced in detail. Afterward, the recent progress in improving the durability of ice-proof surfaces is emphasized. Finally, the remaining challenges and promising breakthroughs in this field are briefly discussed.

Recent Progress of Bioinspired Scalephobic Surfaces with Specific Barrier Layers

Bioinspired superwettable surfaces have been widely harnessed in diverse applications such as self-cleaning, oil/water separation, and liquid transport. So far, only a little work is focused on scalephobic capability of those superwettable surfaces. However, the troublesome scale deposition will inevitably be observed in our daily production and life, greatly reducing heat transfer efficiency and inhibiting the liquid transport. To address this annoying problem, as the emerging strategy, specific barrier layers are introduced onto superwettable surfaces to reduce or even avoid the direct contact between scale and the surfaces. In this feature article, we first provide the basic concept of bioinspired scalephobic surfaces with specific barrier layers. Then, we briefly introduce the typical fabrication methods of scalephobic surfaces. Later, we summarize recent progress of bioinspired scalephobic surfaces with specific barrier layers. Furthermore, we point out the guiding theory and criteria for the stability of barrier layers. Finally, we put forward the forecast on the existing problems and future direction in bioinspired scalephobic surfaces.

Preparation and Application of ZIF-8 Thin Layers

Herein we compare various preparation methods for thin ZIF-8 layers on a Cu substrate for application as a host material for omniphobic lubricant-infused surfaces. Such omniphobic surfaces can be used in thermal engineering applications, for example to achieve dropwise condensation or anti-fouling and anti-icing surface properties. For these applications, a thin, conformal, homogeneous, mechanically and chemically stable coating is essential. In this study, thin ZIF-8 layers were deposited on a Cu substrate by different routes, such as (i) electrochemical anodic deposition on a Zn-covered Cu substrate, (ii) doctor blade technique for preparation of a composite layer containing PVDF binder and ZIF-8, as well as (iii) doctor blade technique for preparation of a two-layer composite on the Cu substrate containing a PVDF-film and a ZIF-8 layer. The morphology and topography of the coatings were compared by using profilometry, XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. After infusion with a perfluorinated oil, the wettability of the surfaces was assessed by contact angle measurements, and advantages of each preparation method were discussed.
