Life stage-dependent genetic traits as drivers of plant-herbivore interactions

In recent decades, we have come to understand in great detail the mechanisms that allow plants and herbivorous arthropods to withstand each other. Research into these interactions often focuses on specific life stages of plants and animals, often for pragmatic reasons. Yet it is well known that the lifecycles of plants and herbivores are accompanied by niche shifts that can change their interactions. The occurrence of changes in the defensive regulatory and metabolic networks of plants during their development as driver of plant-herbivore interactions is mainly inferred from behavioral patterns, but there is increasingly molecular-mechanistic data to support the causality. In particular, understanding the molecular-mechanistic signatures of ontogenetic niche shifts, and their genetic basis, may prove to be critical for the design of knowledge-based crop protection strategies.

Host plant resistance to thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) - current state of art and future research avenues

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is endorsed as the future standard for crop protection worldwide. This holistic concept integrates preventative and curative measures amongst which host plant resistance (HPR) plays an essential role. Up to now HPR has been a somewhat under-utilized tool in pest management due to widespread use of pesticides and technological hindrance. Thrips are key pests in agriculture and horticulture worldwide. Here we provide an overview on the current status of research on constitutive and induced HPR including thrips-host relationships and thrips as virus vectors. We stress modulation of plant defense responses by abiotic and biotic elicitors to increase HPR and provide an outlook on the increasing potential of HPR inspired by the fast advancement of -omics techniques.

Communities of arthropods associated with the composting process of the organic solid waste produced in a landfill in Brazil

Composting is a process recommended as a way to recycle the organic part of the solid waste in which several micro and macroorganisms act as decomposers of the organic matter, in a process that takes around 120 days and faces roughly three different phases. Because we do not know the community of arthropods associated with the compost produced in one of the biggest landfills placed in Brazil, here we collected and identified the community of arthropods present in each phase of the organic compost. Our hypothesis is that the abundance and diversity of arthropods are different within each phase of the compost and we hope to find particular groups of arthropods that can be used as indicator of specific phases. In total, we identified the taxa of 1204 arthropods (insects, arachnidan and diplopods). We found that diversity and abundancy of arthropods were indeed different for each maturation phase of the compost, but we did not find families that are good indicators of each phase. In addition, to be certain about the safety of the compost produced, we investigated the presence of microorganisms in the final product and we found considerable levels of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis in some samples. Finally, we argue that the presence of these macro and microorganisms during the process may be beneficial or harmful. Since their presence decreased greatly by the end of the process, we acknowledge that composting works efficiently as a way to recycle the organic part of the waste generated in Brazil.

A novel experimental approach for studying life-history traits of phytophagous arthropods utilizing an artificial culture medium

Experimental approaches to studying life-history traits in minute herbivorous arthropods are hampered by the need to work with detached host plant material and the difficulty of maintaining that material in a suitable condition to support the animal throughout the duration of the test. In order to address this shortcoming, we developed a customizable agar-based medium modified from an established plant cell-culture medium to nourish detached leaves laid atop it while also preventing arthropods from escaping the experimental arena. The artificial culture medium was tested with two herbivorous mite species: the wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella; Eriophyidae) and two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae; Tetranychidae). The proposed approach was a major improvement over a standard protocol for prolonged studies of individual eriophyid mites and also provided some benefits for experiments with spider mites. Moreover, the described method can be easily modified according to the requirements of host plant species and applied to a wide range of microherbivore species. Such applications include investigations of life-history traits and other ecological and evolutionary questions, e.g. mating or competitive behaviours or interspecific interactions, assessing invasiveness potential and predicting possible outbreaks. The approach presented here should have a significant impact on the advancement of evolutionary and ecological research on microscopic herbivores.
