Quantum coherence, many-body correlations, and non-thermal effects for autonomous thermal machines

Thermodynamics of hybrid quantum rotor devices

We investigate the thermodynamics of a hybrid quantum device consisting of two qubits collectively interacting with a quantum rotor and coupled dissipatively to two equilibrium reservoirs at different temperatures. By modeling the dynamics and the resulting steady state of the system using a collision model, we identify the functioning of the device as a thermal engine, a refrigerator, or an accelerator. In addition, we also look into the device's capacity to operate as a heat rectifier and optimize both the rectification coefficient and the heat flow simultaneously. Drawing an analogy to heat rectification and since we are interested in the conversion of energy into the rotor's kinetic energy, we introduce the concept of angular momentum rectification, which may be employed to control work extraction through an external load.

Measurement-based quantum Otto engine with a two-spin system coupled by anisotropic interaction: Enhanced efficiency at finite times

We have studied the performance of a measurement-based quantum Otto engine (QOE) in a working system of two spins coupled by Heisenberg anisotropic interaction. A nonselective quantum measurement fuels the engine. We have calculated thermodynamic quantities of the cycle in terms of the transition probabilities between the instantaneous energy eigenstates, and also between the instantaneous energy eigenstates and the basis states of the measurement, when the unitary stages of the cycle operate for a finite time τ. The efficiency attains a large value in the limit of τ→0 and then gradually reaches the adiabatic value in a long-time limit τ→∞. For finite values of τ and for anisotropic interaction, an oscillatory behavior of the efficiency of the engine is observed. This oscillation can be interpreted in terms of interference between the relevant transition amplitudes in the unitary stages of the engine cycle. Therefore, for a suitable choice of timing of the unitary processes in the short time regime, the engine can have a higher work output and less heat absorption, such that it works more efficiently than a quasistatic engine. In the case of an always-on heat bath, in a very short time, the bath has a negligible effect on its performance.

Full counting statistics and coherences: Fluctuation symmetry in heat transport with the unified quantum master equation

Recently, a "unified" quantum master equation was derived and shown to be of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form. This equation describes the dynamics of open quantum systems in a manner that forgoes the full secular approximation and retains the impact of coherences between eigenstates close in energy. We implement full counting statistics with the unified quantum master equation to investigate the statistics of energy currents through open quantum systems with nearly degenerate levels. We show that, in general, this equation gives rise to dynamics that satisfy fluctuation symmetry, a sufficient condition for the Second Law of Thermodynamics at the level of average fluxes. For systems with nearly degenerate energy levels, such that coherences build up, the unified equation is simultaneously thermodynamically consistent and more accurate than the fully secular master equation. We exemplify our results for a "V" system facilitating energy transport between two thermal baths at different temperatures. We compare the statistics of steady-state heat currents through this system as predicted by the unified equation to those given by the Redfield equation, which is less approximate but, in general, not thermodynamically consistent. We also compare results to the secular equation, where coherences are entirely abandoned. We find that maintaining coherences between nearly degenerate levels is essential to properly capture the current and its cumulants. On the other hand, the relative fluctuations of the heat current, which embody the thermodynamic uncertainty relation, display inconsequential dependence on quantum coherences.

Steady-State Thermodynamics of a Cascaded Collision Model

We study the steady-state thermodynamics of a cascaded collision model where two subsystems S1 and S2 collide successively with an environment R in the cascaded fashion. We first formulate general expressions of thermodynamics quantities and identify the nonlocal forms of work and heat that result from cascaded interactions of the system with the common environment. Focusing on a concrete system of two qubits, we then show that, to be able to unidirectionally influence the thermodynamics of S2, the former interaction of S1-R should not be energy conserving. We finally demonstrate that the steady-state coherence generated in the cascaded model is a kind of useful resource in extracting work, quantified by ergotropy, from the system. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding on the thermodynamics of the cascaded model and a possible way to achieve the unidirectional control on the thermodynamics process in the steady-state regime.

Quantum Energy Lines and the Optimal Output Ergotropy Problem

We study the transferring of useful energy (work) along a transmission line that allows for partial preservation of quantum coherence. As a figure of merit we adopt the maximum values that ergotropy, total ergotropy, and nonequilibrium free energy attain at the output of the line for an assigned input energy threshold. For phase-invariant bosonic Gaussian channel (BGC) models, we show that coherent inputs are optimal. For (one-mode) not phase-invariant BGCs we solve the optimization problem under the extra restriction of Gaussian input signals.

Coherences and the thermodynamic uncertainty relation: Insights from quantum absorption refrigerators

The thermodynamic uncertainty relation, originally derived for classical Markov-jump processes, provides a tradeoff relation between precision and dissipation, deepening our understanding of the performance of quantum thermal machines. Here, we examine the interplay of quantum system coherences and heat current fluctuations on the validity of the thermodynamics uncertainty relation in the quantum regime. To achieve the current statistics, we perform a full counting statistics simulation of the Redfield quantum master equation. We focus on steady-state quantum absorption refrigerators where nonzero coherence between eigenstates can either suppress or enhance the cooling power, compared with the incoherent limit. In either scenario, we find enhanced relative noise of the cooling power (standard deviation of the power over the mean) in the presence of system coherence, thereby corroborating the thermodynamic uncertainty relation. Our results indicate that fluctuations necessitate consideration when assessing the performance of quantum coherent thermal machines.

Performance bounds of nonadiabatic quantum harmonic Otto engine and refrigerator under a squeezed thermal reservoir

We analyze the performance of a quantum Otto cycle, employing a time-dependent harmonic oscillator as the working fluid undergoing sudden expansion and compression strokes during the adiabatic stages, coupled to a squeezed reservoir. First, we show that the maximum efficiency that our engine can achieve is 1/2 only, which is in contrast with earlier studies claiming unit efficiency under the effect of a squeezed reservoir. Then, in the high-temperature limit, we obtain analytic expressions for the upper bound on the efficiency as well as on the coefficient of performance of the Otto cycle. The obtained bounds are independent of the parameters of the system and depend on the reservoir parameters only. Additionally, with a hot squeezed thermal bath, we obtain an analytic expression for the efficiency at maximum work which satisfies the derived upper bound. Further, in the presence of squeezing in the cold reservoir, we specify an operational regime for the Otto refrigerator otherwise forbidden in the standard case. Finally, we find the cost of creating a squeezed state from the thermal state and show that in order to harvest the benefits of squeezing, it is sufficient to squeeze only one mode of the reservoir in resonance with the transition frequency of the working fluid. Further, we show that when the cost of squeezing is included in the definition of the operational efficiency of the engine, the advantages of squeezing fade away. Still, being purely quantum mechanical fuel in nature, squeezed reservoirs are beneficial in their own way by providing us with more compact energy storage medium or offering effectively high-temperature baths without being actually too hot.

Unraveling the role of coherence in the first law of quantum thermodynamics

One of the fundamental questions in the emerging field of quantum thermodynamics is the role played by coherence in energetic processes that occur at the quantum level. Here we address this issue by investigating two different quantum versions of the first law of thermodynamics, derived from the classical definitions of work and heat. By doing so, we find out that there exists a mathematical inconsistency between both scenarios. We further show that the energetic contribution of the dynamics of coherence is the key ingredient to establish the consistency. Some examples involving two-level atomic systems are discussed in order to illustrate our findings.

Fluctuations in Extractable Work Bound the Charging Power of Quantum Batteries

We study the connection between the charging power of quantum batteries and the fluctuations of the extractable work. We prove that in order to have a nonzero rate of change of the extractable work, the state ρ_{W} of the battery cannot be an eigenstate of a "free energy operator," defined by F≡H_{W}+β^{-1}log(ρ_{W}), where H_{W} is the Hamiltonian of the battery and β is the inverse temperature of a reference thermal bath with respect to which the extractable work is calculated. We do so by proving that fluctuations in the free energy operator upper bound the charging power of a quantum battery. Our findings also suggest that quantum coherence in the battery enhances the charging process, which we illustrate on a toy model of a heat engine.

Cooling condition for multilevel quantum absorption refrigerators

Models for quantum absorption refrigerators serve as test beds for exploring concepts and developing methods in quantum thermodynamics. Here we depart from the minimal, ideal design and consider a generic multilevel model for a quantum absorption refrigerator, which potentially suffers from lossy processes. Based on a full-counting statistics approach, we derive a formal cooling condition for the refrigerator, which can be feasibly evaluated analytically and numerically. We exemplify our approach on a three-level model for a quantum absorption refrigerator that suffers from different forms of nonideality (heat leakage, competition between different cooling pathways) and examine the cooling current with different designs. This study assists in identifying the cooling window of imperfect thermal machines.
