Radiation emission in laser-wakefields driven by structured laser pulses with orbital angular momentum

Fully continuous spiral phase plate for ultraintense optical vortices

Ultraintense optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum have attracted much attention in strong-field laser physics due to their spiral phase and hollow intensity. This Letter introduces a fully continuous spiral phase plate (FC-SPP) that enables the generation of an ultraintense Laguerre-Gaussian beam. An optimization design method based on the spatial filter technique and chirp-z transform is proposed to match the polishing processing and the tightly focusing performance. To enable its use in high-power laser systems, a large-aperture (200 × 200 mm²) FC-SPP has been fabricated on a fused silica substrate through magnetorheological finishing without the use of mask techniques. The far-field phase pattern and intensity distribution based on vector diffraction calculation were compared with those of ideal spiral phase plate and fabricated FC-SPP, which confirmed the high quality of the output vortex beams and their feasibility for producing high-intensity vortices.

Iterative wavefront optimization of ultrafast laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum

Structured intense laser beams offer degrees of freedom that are highly attractive for high-field science applications. However, the performance of high-power laser beams in these applications is often hindered by deviations from the desired spatiotemporal profile. This study reports the wavefront optimization of ultrafast Laguerre-Gaussian beams through the synergy of adaptive optics and genetic algorithm-guided feedback. The results indicate that the intensity fluctuations along the perimeter of the target ring-shaped profile can be reduced up to ∼15%. Furthermore, the radius of the ring beam profile can be tailored to a certain extent by establishing threshold fitting criteria. The versatility of this approach is experimentally demonstrated in conjunction with different focusing geometries.

Betatron radiation polarization control by using an off-axis ionization injection in a laser wakefield acceleration

Tunable X-ray sources from a laser-driven wakefield have wide applications. However, due to the difficulty of electron dynamics control, currently the tunability of laser wakefield-based X-ray sources is still difficult. By using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we propose a scheme to realize controllable electron dynamics and X-ray radiation. In the scheme, a long wavelength drive pulse excites a plasma wake and an off-axis laser pulse with a short wavelength co-propagates with the drive pulse and ionizes the K-shell electrons of the background high-Z gas. The electrons can be injected in the wakefield with controllable transverse positions and residual momenta. These injected electrons experience controllable oscillations in the wake, leading to tunable radiations both in intensity and polarization.

Attosecond betatron radiation pulse train

High-intensity X-ray sources are essential diagnostic tools for science, technology and medicine. Such X-ray sources can be produced in laser-plasma accelerators, where electrons emit short-wavelength radiation due to their betatron oscillations in the plasma wake of a laser pulse. Contemporary available betatron radiation X-ray sources can deliver a collimated X-ray pulse of duration on the order of several femtoseconds from a source size of the order of several micrometres. In this paper we demonstrate, through particle-in-cell simulations, that the temporal resolution of such a source can be enhanced by an order of magnitude by a spatial modulation of the emitting relativistic electron bunch. The modulation is achieved by the interaction of the that electron bunch with a co-propagating laser beam which results in the generation of a train of equidistant sub-femtosecond X-ray pulses. The distance between the single pulses of a train is tuned by the wavelength of the modulation laser pulse. The modelled experimental setup is achievable with current technologies. Potential applications include stroboscopic sampling of ultrafast fundamental processes.
