Non-Invasive Imaging Through Scattering Medium by Using a Reverse Response Wavefront Shaping Technique

Deep learning based coherent diffraction imaging of dynamic scattering media

The ptychographic iterative engine (PIE) is a lensless coherent diffraction imaging algorithm known for its simplicity, easy to use, scalability, and fast convergence. However, practical applications often encounter interference in imaging results caused by non-static scattering media, such as dense fog, seawater target detection and medical biology diagnosis. To address this challenge, we propose a novel approach using computational deep learning for dynamic scattering medium image reconstruction, enabling lens-free coherent diffraction imaging through dynamic scattering media. Through extensive analysis, we evaluate the effectiveness of the neural network for PIE image recovery under varying scattering medium concentration conditions. We also test scattering images obtained by hybrid training with different concentrations of scattering medium to assess the generalisation ability of the neural network. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieve PIE lens-free imaging under non-static scattering media interference. This coherent diffraction imaging method, based on transmission through dynamic scattering media, opens up new possibilities for practical applications of PIE and fosters its development in complex environments. Its significance extends to fields like atmospheric pollution, seawater target detection and medical biology diagnosis, providing valuable references for research in these domains.

Increased phase precision of spatial light modulators using irrational slopes: application to attosecond metrology

The ability of spatial light modulators (SLMs) to modify the amplitude and phase of light has proved them invaluable to the optics and photonics community. In many applications, the bit-depth of SLMs is a major limiting factor dictated by a digital processor. As a result, there is usually a compromise between refresh speed and bit-depth. Here, we present a method to increase the effective bit-depth of SLMs, which utilizes a linear slope, as is commonly applied to deal with the zeroth-order effect. This technique was tested using two interferometric transient absorption spectroscopy setups. Through the high harmonic generation in gases producing a train of attosecond pulses and harmonics from solids in the ultraviolet, two pulses are generated that interfere in the far field providing a measurement of the optical phase. An increase in the precision far beyond the limit dictated by the digital processor in the bit-depth was found.

S194-Imaging through scattering media by 3D spatial filtering embedded into micro-endoscope

BACKGROUND

The main objective is related to the capability of integrating into minimally invasive and ultra-thin disposable micro-endoscopic tool, a modality of realizing high-resolution imaging through scattering medium such as blood while performing medical procedure. In this research we aim for the first time to present a time-multiplexing super-resolving approach exhibiting enhanced focus sensitivity, generated by 3D spatial filtering, for significant contrast increase in images collected through scattering medium.

METHOD

Our innovative method of imaging through scattering media provides imaging of only one specific object plane in scattering medium's volume while suppressing the noise coming from all other planes. The method should be assisted with axial scanning to perform imaging of the entire 3D object's volume. In our developed optical system noise suppression is achieved by 3D spatial filtering approach while more than an order of magnitude of suppression is experimentally demonstrated. The sensitivity to defocus and noise suppression is dramatically enhanced by placing an array of micro-lenses combined with pinholes raster positioned between two modules of telecentric lenses.

RESULTS

We present our novel conceptual designs for the enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when imaging through scattering medium and present preliminary experimental results demonstrating both quality imaging performed on resolution bars target as well as SNR quantified results in which SNR enhancement of more than one order of magnitude was obtained.

CONCLUSIONS

In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we present the first ever design of time-multiplexing-based approach for super-resolved imaging through scattering medium. The approach includes a time-multiplexing optical design significantly increasing the depth of focus sensitivity and after performing axial scanning yielding a significant enhancement of the SNR of the 3D object that is being imaged through the scattering medium. Right after the contrast (the SNR) enhancement we scan the object with the projected array of spots (raster) and map it continuously and with high imaging resolution.

Optical reciprocity induced wavefront shaping for axial and lateral shifting of focus through a scattering medium

Light propagating along a reversed path experiences the same transmission coefficient as in the forward direction, independent of the path complexity. This is called the optical reciprocity of light, which is valid for not too intense scattering media as well. Hence, by utilizing the reciprocity principle, the proposed novel technique can achieve axially and laterally tunable focus, non-invasively, through a scattering media without a priori knowledge or modeling of its scattering properties. Moreover, the uniqueness of the proposed technique lies in the fact that the illumination and detection are on the same side of the scattering media.
