Metamaterials for Acoustic Noise Filtering and Energy Harvesting

Artificial methods for noise filtering are required for the twenty-first century's Factory vision 4.0. From various perspectives of physics, noise filtering capabilities could be addressed in multiple ways. In this article, the physics of noise control is first dissected into active and passive control mechanisms and then further different physics are categorized to visualize their respective physics, mechanism, and target of their respective applications. Beyond traditional passive approaches, the comparatively modern concept for sound isolation and acoustic noise filtering is based on artificial metamaterials. These new materials demonstrate unique interaction with acoustic wave propagation exploiting different physics, which is emphasized in this article. A few multi-functional metamaterials were reported to harvest energy while filtering the ambient noise simultaneously. It was found to be extremely useful for next-generation noise applications where simultaneously, green energy could be generated from the energy which is otherwise lost. In this article, both these concepts are brought under one umbrella to evaluate the applicability of the respective methods. An attempt has been made to create groundbreaking transformative and collaborative possibilities. Controlling of acoustic sources and active damping mechanisms are reported under an active mechanism. Whereas Helmholtz resonator, sound absorbing, spring-mass damping, and vibration absorbing approaches together with metamaterial approaches are reported under a passive mechanism. The possible application of metamaterials with ventilation while performing noise filtering is reported to be implemented for future Smart Cities.

A Flexible Meta-Curtain for Simultaneous Soundproofing and Ventilation

We demonstrate a flexible meta-curtain that can simultaneously block the propagation of sound waves of selected frequencies and let air flow through freely. Such a meta-curtain is assembled by two soft and perforated polyvinyl chloride films with an optimized distance between them. The total thickness of the meta-curtain is 1.16 cm and the holes on it have a diameter of 5 cm. The functionality of soundproofing is bestowed by the resonances formed between the films, which is verified by band structure analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental measurements. We experimentally observed sound transmission loss with a peak of 50 dB near 1700 Hz and an average of 26 dB from 1000 Hz to 1760 Hz, which is consistent with the numerical results. Attributing to the softness of the films and the robustness of the resonance, this meta-curtain retains its functionality even at deformations such as bending. Our work paves a way toward soundproof structures with the advantages of ventilation, flexibility, and light weight.

A decoupling-design strategy for high sound absorption in subwavelength structures with air ventilation

A strategy based on the decoupling design of two elementary structures, both made of coiled-up channels, is proposed. One channeling structure is designed for blocking sound transmission, while the other element is used for absorbing sounds at low-transmission frequencies. Based on this strategy, the sound-absorbing sample with air ventilation is fabricated and its high-absorption capability is demonstrated experimentally. The expanding of sound absorption bandwidth by combining different absorptive channels into the sample structure is also demonstrated. The proposed method provides a new route towards broadband high sound absorption in ventilated structures.

Leakage Effect on the Transmission Properties of a Duct Loaded with a Helmholtz Resonator

The characteristics of transmitted acoustic field have important significance to the leakage detection and the acoustic metasurface technology. When the additional leak holes are present, the conventional single neck Helmholtz resonator will naturally become the one with multiple necks. Based on such a background, in this paper, the effects of leakages on the transmission properties of a Duct Helmholtz Resonator (DHR) device is investigated both analytically and numerically. A set of closed-form formulas are derived to analytically predict the transmission spectra of the DHR device with leakages. The theoretical results are compared with COMSOL predictions. The simulation results show that the number and width of leak holes have significant influences on the amplitude, phase shift of the transmitted wave, and resonance frequency of the DHR system.

Acoustic notch filtering earmuff utilizing Helmholtz resonator arrays

In recent years, noisy bustling environments have created situations in which earmuffs must soundproof only specific noise while transmitting significant sounds, such as voices, for work safety and efficiency. Two sound insulation technologies have been utilized: passive noise control (PNC) and active noise control (ANC). However, PNC is incapable of insulating selective frequencies of noise, and ANC is limited to low-frequency sounds. Thus, it has been difficult for traditional earmuffs to cancel out only high-frequency noise that people feel uncomfortable hearing. Here, we propose an acoustic notch filtering earmuff utilizing Helmholtz resonator (HR) arrays that provides a sound attenuation effect around the tuneable resonant frequency. A sheet-like sound insulating plate comprising HR arrays is realized in a honeycomb structure. Since the resonant frequency is determined by the geometry of the HR arrays, a highly audible sound region can be designed as the target frequency. In this research, the acoustic notch filtering performance of the proposed HR array plate is investigated in both simulations and experiments. Furthermore, the fabricated earmuffs using the novel HR array plates achieve a sound insulation performance exceeding 40 dB at the target frequency, which is sufficiently high compared to that of conventional earmuffs. The experimental results confirm that the proposed device is a useful approach for insulating frequency-selective sound.

Design, Manufacturing, and Acoustical Analysis of a Helmholtz Resonator-Based Metamaterial Plate

Acoustic metamaterials are materials artificially engineered to control sound waves, which is not possible with conventional materials. We have proposed a design of an acoustic metamaterial plate with inbuilt Helmholtz resonators. The plate is made of Polylactic acid (PLA) which is fabricated using an additive manufacturing technique. It consists of Helmholtz resonator-shaped cavities of different sizes. In this paper, we have analyzed the acoustic properties of the Helmholtz resonators-based metamaterial plate experimentally as well as numerically. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical results. These types of 3D-printed metamaterial plates can find their application where high sound transmission loss is required to create a quieter ambience. There is an additional advantage of being lightweight because of the Helmholtz resonator-shaped cavities built inside the plate. Thus, these types of metamaterial plates can find their application in the design sector requiring lighter materials with high sound transmission loss.

Recent Advances in Acoustic Metamaterials for Simultaneous Sound Attenuation and Air Ventilation Performances

In the past two decades, acoustic metamaterials have garnered much attention owing to their unique functional characteristics, which are difficult to find in naturally available materials. The acoustic metamaterials have demonstrated excellent acoustical characteristics that paved a new pathway for researchers to develop effective solutions for a wide variety of multifunctional applications, such as low-frequency sound attenuation, sound wave manipulation, energy harvesting, acoustic focusing, acoustic cloaking, biomedical acoustics, and topological acoustics. This review provides an update on the acoustic metamaterials’ recent progress for simultaneous sound attenuation and air ventilation performances. Several variants of acoustic metamaterials, such as locally resonant structures, space-coiling, holey and labyrinthine metamaterials, and Fano resonant materials, are discussed briefly. Finally, the current challenges and future outlook in this emerging field are discussed as well.
