Ibuprofen as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in synthetic acid rain solution

Unraveling the corrosion inhibition behavior of prinivil drug on mild steel in 1M HCl corrosive solution: insights from density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and experimental approaches

The deterioration of mild steel in an acidic environment poses a significant challenge in various industries. The emergence of effective corrosion inhibitors has drawn attention to studies aimed at reducing the harmful consequences of corrosion. In this study, the corrosion inhibition efficiency of Prinivil in a 1M HCl solution through various electrochemical and gravimetric techniques has been investigated for the first time. The results demonstrated that the inhibition efficiency of Prinivil expanded from 61.37% at 50 ppm to 97.35% at 500 ppm concentration at 298 K. With a regression coefficient (R 2) of 0.987, Kads value of 0.935 and Ea value of 43.024 kJ/mol at 500 ppm concentration of inhibitor, a strong affinity of Prinivil for adsorption onto the metal surface has been significantly found. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurement analyses further support the inhibitory behavior of Prinivil, demonstrating the production of a defensive layer on the surface of mild steel. Additionally, molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo simulations were employed to investigate the stability and interactions between Prinivil and the metallic surface (Fe (1 1 0)) at the atomic level. The computed results reveal strong adsorption of Prinivil upon the steel surface, confirming its viability as a corrosion inhibitor.

Experimental Studies on the Effect of Expired Amiodarone Drug (EAD) as a Corrosion Inhibitor on Mild Steel in 1 M HCl

In the present investigation, the corrosion tendency of mild steel under acidic pH was studied by employing unused expired amiodarone (EAD) drug as a potential corrosion inhibitor by adopting the weight loss measurement method. The corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) of the formed protective film (EAD) on the steel surface was analyzed using potentiodynamic polarization and AC-impedance spectroscopy studies. The surface morphology of the mild steel before and after corrosion (in 1.0 M HCl) was analyzed via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDAX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and thermodynamic studies. The weight loss measurement under different concentrations of EAD indicated that an excellent inhibition was displayed at a concentration of 0.001 M, and the IE was found to depend on both the concentration and molecular structure of EAD. A potentiodynamic polarization study revealed that EAD predominantly acted as a cathode inhibitor, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed the adsorption of EAD on the surface of mild steel, which obeyed Temkin's adsorption isotherm model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters revealed that adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic.

Insight into the corrosion inhibiting potential and anticancer activity of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-methyl-N'-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carbohydrazide via computational approaches

Cancer is a major health concern globally. Orthodox and traditional medicine have actively been explored to manage this disease. Also, corrosion is a natural catastrophe that weakens and deteriorates metallic structures and their alloys causing major structural failures and severe economic implications. Designing and exploring multi-functional materials are beneficial since they are adaptive to different fields including engineering and pharmaceutics. In this study, we examined the anti-corrosion and anti-cancer potentials of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-methyl-N'-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carbohydrazide (MAC) using computational approaches. The molecular reactivity descriptors and charge distribution parameters of MAC were studied in gas and water at density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) theory level. The binding and mechanism of interaction between MAC and iron surface was studied using Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in hydrochloric acid medium. From the DFT, MC, and MD simulations, it was observed that MAC interacted spontaneously with iron surface essentially via van der Waal and electrostatic interactions. The near-parallel alignment of the corrosion inhibitor on iron plane facilitates its adsorption and isolation of the metal surface from the acidic solution. Further, the compound was docked in the binding pocket of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK: 4FNZ) protein to assess its anti-cancer potential. The binding score, pharmacokinetics, and drug-likeness of MAC were compared with the reference drug (Crizotinib). The MAC displayed binding scores of -5.729 kcal/mol while Crizotinib has -3.904 kcal/mol. MD simulation of the complexes revealed that MAC is more stable and exhibits more favourable hydrogen bonding with the ALK receptor's active site than Crizotinib.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Efficiency of Expired Drugs Used as Corrosion Inhibitors: A Review

Corrosion inhibitors represent one of the most commonly used methods for significantly reducing the corrosion rate of metals and alloys. Adsorption inhibitors have a wide range of applications in cooling water systems, deicing solutions for aircrafts, airports and ways, etching and degreasing solutions, oil pipelines, paints and coatings and metal processing solutions. Adsorption corrosion inhibitors of metals and alloys are generally organic compounds that contain structures with heteroatoms (N, P, S, As, O) in their molecules, having lone pair electrons or π electrons in aromatic rings or multiple bonds. They enable relatively strong interactions between the metal atoms and organic molecules, resulting in a protective layer of organic molecules adsorbed at the metal-corrosive solution interface. Most molecules of active substances from drugs contain similar structures, which is why many drugs have been already tested as corrosion inhibitors. One of the major disadvantages of using drugs for this purpose is their particularly high price. To overcome this impediment, the possibility of using expired drugs as corrosion inhibitors has been investigated since 2009. The present paper is an exhaustive compilation of the scientific published papers devoted to the use of expired drugs as corrosion inhibitors in various aggressive solutions. The inhibitory efficiencies of expired drugs are presented as a function of the studied metal or alloy and the nature of the aggressive solution, as well as the concentration of the inhibitor in such a solution. Research has especially been focused on mild and carbon steel and less on stainless steel, as well as on some metals such as copper, zinc, nickel, tin and aluminum and its alloys. The experimental methods used to assess the inhibitory efficiencies of expired drugs are briefly discussed. Also, the available information on the stability of the active substances in the drugs is presented, although most authors were not concerned with this aspect. Finally, several actions are revealed that must be undertaken by researchers so that the results obtained in the study of the anticorrosive action of expired drugs can be applied at the industrial level and not remain only an academic concern.

Corrosion inhibition of mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution by the expired Ampicillin drug

This study examines the utilization of the expired drug, namely ampicillin, as a mild steel corrosion inhibitor in an acidic environment. The inhibitor was evaluated using weight loss and electrochemical measurement accompanied with surface analytical techniques. The drug showed a potential inhibitory efficiency of > 95% at 55 °C. The inclusion of the inhibitor increased the charge transfer resistance at the steel-solution interface, according to impedance analyses. According to potentiodynamic polarisation measurements, expired ampicillin drug significantly decreased the corrosion current density and worked as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was followed by the adsorption of ampicillin drug on the steel substrate, exhibiting an association of physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. The surface study performed using contact angle and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) measurements supported the inhibitor adsorption on the steel substrate.

Recycling Unused Midazolam Drug as Efficient Corrosion Inhibitor for Copper in Nitric Acid Solution

The current work explores the potential for recycling unused or expired Midazolam (MID) drug, a benzodiazepine derivative, as an efficient corrosion inhibitor for copper in nitric acid solution. The technical advantage of recycling expired MID drug relates to the avoidance of organic inhibitor production costs and the reduction of disposal costs of the expired medication. A combination of electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), weight loss, and quantum chemical calculation were used to assess the inhibition mechanism and efficiency of MID. It was found that inhibition efficiency increases with inhibitor concentration, reaching a highest value of 92.9% for a concentration of 10⁻⁴ M MID. MID was classified as a mixed-type inhibitor, showing a preferential cathodic suppression mechanism. The obtained values of −45.89 kJ mol⁻¹ for the standard free energy of adsorption indicate that the inhibition mechanism is based on chemisorption of MID molecules on the copper surface, which obeys the Langmuir isotherm. Surface analysis using scanning electronic microscopy revealed that MID offers high protection against corrosion during both immersion and polarization tests. Molecular modelling and quantum chemical calculations indicated chemical interactions between MID molecules and the copper surface, as well as electrostatic interactions. The results obtained using the different techniques were in good agreement and highlight the effectiveness of MID in the corrosion inhibition of copper.

Theoretical, chemical, and electrochemical studies of Equisetum arvense extract as an impactful inhibitor of steel corrosion in 2 M HCl electrolyte

A new type of Equisetum arvense aerial part (EAAP) extract was ready to be tested as a corrosion inhibitor for steel-based parts in Multi-stage flash (MSF) segments while the segments were being acid cleaned. The EAAP extract was identified using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). When compared to the specimen exposed to blank solution, EAAP extract molecules covered about 97% of the carbon steel surface in 2 M HCl solution, and the corrosion rate was reduced to 0.58 ± 0.02 μg cm^-2 h^-1 at 300 mg l^-1. EAAP extract tends to have a blended impact on both anodic and cathodic sites on the surface of carbon steel. The thermodynamic activation factors are substantially higher in the presence of extract solution than in the absent of extract, demonstrating that the carbon steel surface would corrode slowly in the presence of EAAP extract. Theoretical models were used to validate the adsorption of EAAP extract on steel surfaces.

DFT, Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations for the prediction of corrosion inhibition efficiency of novel pyrazolylnucleosides on Cu(111) surface in acidic media

Five novel pyrazolylnucleosides have been evaluated theoretically for their corrosion inhibition efficiency on the Cu(111) surface in acidic media. DFT calculations were carried out to exhibit the intrinsic properties such as lowest unoccupied (ELUMO) and highest occupied (EHOMO) molecular orbital energies, as well as energy gap (∆E), chemical hardness (η), chemical softness (σ), electronegativity (χ), electrophilicity (ω) and nucleophilicity (ε). The theoretical FT-IR spectra were recorded to indicate the presence of the specific bonds in the studied molecules. The surface interactions between the inhibitor molecules and the metal surface were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. As a result, we have found that the inhibitor pyrazolylnucleosides 5a-e have strong interactions with Cu(111) surface, and therefore have excellent predictive inhibition power against copper corrosion.

Removal of Enantiomeric Ibuprofen in a Nanofiltration Membrane Process

A study of the behavior of R- and S-enantiomers of ibuprofen (R-IBU and S-IBU) in aqueous solution by nanofiltration (NF) membranes revealed that up to 23% of the pharmaceutical was adsorbed onto the stainless steel equipment of a flat-sheet experimental unit. Mass balances disclosed that IBU’s S-enantiomer was primarily responsible for the adsorption onto the equipment. Additional IBU adsorption was also experienced on the NF membrane coupons, verified by increased contact angle measurements on the surfaces. The IBU-equipment adsorptive relationship with and without the membrane coupon were best described by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. At a feed water pH of 4.0 units and racemic µg/L IBU concentrations, NF removal ranged from 34.5% to 49.5%. The rejection of S-IBU was consistently greater than the R-enantiomer. Adsorption onto the surfaces influenced NF rejection by 18.9% to 27.3%. The removal of IBU displayed a direct relationship with an increase in feed water pH. Conversely, the adsorption of IBU exhibited an indirect relationship with an increase in feed water pH.
