Two Hybrid Au-ZnO Heterostructures with Different Hierarchical Structures: Towards Highly Efficient Photocatalysts

Boosting CO2 piezo-reduction via metal-support interactions in Au/ZnO based catalysts

Confronting the challenge of climate change necessitates innovative approaches for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Metal-support interaction has been widely demonstrated to enable greatly improved performances in thermal-catalytic, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, its applicability and specifically its role in the emerging piezo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are unknown, severely hampering the utilizations of piezo-electrocatalysis in CO2 conversion. Herein, by adopting Au particles supported on ZnO (Au/ZnO) as a paradigm, it is found that the metal-support interaction can remarkably improve the separation and transfer of piezo-carriers and enhance CO2 adsorption. As a result, Au/ZnO demonstrates a substantially boosted activity for piezo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and the optimal sample exhibits a 37.3% increase in CO yield compared to the pristine ZnO. The integration of metal-support interactions opens a new avenue to the design of advanced piezo-electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction.

Defects Healing of the ZnO Surface by Filling with Au Atom Catalysts for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Production

Healed defects on photocatalysts surface and their interaction with plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted attention in H2 production process. In this study, surface oxygen vacancy (Vo ) defects are created on ZnO (Vo -ZnO) NPs by directly pyrolyzing zeolitic imidazolate framework. The surface defects on Vo -ZnO provide active sites for the diffusion of single Au atoms and as nucleation sites for the formation of Au NPs by the in situ photodeposition process. The electronically healed surface defects by single Au atoms help in the formation of a heterojunction between the ZnO and plasmonic Au NPs. The formed Au/Vo -Au:ZnO-4 heterojunction prolongs photoelectron lifetimes and increases donor charge density. Therefore, the optimized photocatalysts of Au/Vo -Au:ZnO-4 has 21.28 times higher H2 production rate than the pristine Vo -ZnO under UV-visible light in 0.35 m Na2 SO4 and 0.25 m Na2 SO3 . However in 0.35 m Na2 S and 0.25 m Na2 SO3 , the H2 production rate is 25.84 mmole h-1 g-1 . Furthermore, Au/Vo -Au:ZnO-4 shows visible light activity by generating hot carries via induced surface plasmonic effects. It has 48.58 times higher H2 production rate than pristine Vo -ZnO. Therefore, this study infers new insight for defect healing mediated preparation of Au/Vo -Au:ZnO heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic H2 production.

Enhanced Plasmonic Photocatalysis of Au-Decorated ZnO Nanocomposites

The rapid development of technological processes in various industrial fields has led to surface water pollution with different organic pollutants, such as dyes, pesticides, and antibiotics. In this context, it is necessary to find modern, environmentally friendly solutions to avoid the hazardous effects on the aquatic environment. The aim of this paper is to improve the photocatalytic performance of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by using the plasmonic resonance induced by covering them with gold (Au) nanoparticles. Therefore, we evaluate the charge carriers’ behavior in terms of optical properties and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The ZnO-Au nanocomposites were synthesized through a simple chemical protocol in multiple steps. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) approximately 20 nm in diameter were prepared by chemical precipitation. ZnO-Au nanocomposites were obtained by decorating the ZnO NPs with Au at different molar ratios through a reduction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the simultaneous presence of hexagonal ZnO and cubic Au phases. The optical investigations evidenced the existence of a band-gap absorption peak of ZnO at 372 nm, as well as a surface plasmonic band of Au nanoparticles at 573 nm. The photocatalytic tests indicated increased photocatalytic degradation of the Rhodamine B (RhB) and oxytetracycline (OTC) pollutants under visible light irradiation in the presence of ZnO-Au nanocomposites (60–85%) compared to ZnO NPs (43%). This behavior can be assigned to the plasmonic resonance and the synergetic effects of the individual constituents in the composite nanostructures. The spin-trapping experiments showed the production of ROS while the nanostructures were in contact with the pollutants. This study introduces new strategies to adjust the efficiency of photocatalytic devices by the combination of two types of nanostructures with synergistic functionalities into one single entity. ZnO-Au nanocomposites can be used as stable photocatalysts with excellent reusability and possible industrial applications.

Epitaxially Integrated Hierarchical ZnO/Au/SrTiO3 and ZnO/Ag/Al2O3 Heterostructures: Three-Dimensional Plasmo-Photonic Nanoarchitecturing

In this study, we fabricated three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical plasmo-photonic nanoarchitectures by epitaxially integrating semiconducting zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires with vertically oriented plasmonic gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoplatforms and investigated their growth mechanisms in detail. We synthesized 3D hierarchical Au–ZnO nanostructures via a vapor–solid mechanism leading to the epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires on vertically oriented single-crystalline Au nanowires on a strontium titanate (SrTiO₃) substrate. The elongated half-octahedral Au nanowires with a rhombus cross-section were transformed into thermodynamically stable elongated cuboctahedral Au nanowires with a hexagonal cross-section during the reaction. After the transformation, ZnO thin films with six twinned domains were formed on the side planes of the elongated cuboctahedral Au nanowire trunks, and six ZnO nanowire branches were grown on the ZnO thin films. Further, 3D hierarchical Ag–ZnO nanostructures were obtained via the same vapor–solid mechanism leading to the epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires on vertically oriented Ag nanoplates on an aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) substrate. Therefore, the growth mechanism developed herein can be generally employed to fabricate 3D hierarchical plasmo-photonic nanoarchitectures.

Liquid Metal-Based Route for Synthesizing and Tuning Gas-Sensing Elements

There is a strong demand for developing tunable and facile routes for synthesizing gas-sensitive semiconducting compounds. The concept of synthesizing micro- and nanoparticles of metallic compounds in a tunable process, which relies on liquid metals, is presented here. This is a liquid-based ultrasonication procedure within which additional metallic elements (In, Sn, and Zn) are incorporated into liquid Ga that is sonicated in a secondary solvent. We investigate liquid metal sonication in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water to show their impact on the size, morphology, and crystal structure of the particulated products. The synthesized materials are annealed to investigate their responses to model reducing (H₂) and oxidizing (NO₂) gas species. The preparation process in DMSO gives rise to predominantly monoclinic Ga₂O₃ crystals which are favorable for gas sensing, while the emergence of rhombohedral Ga₂O₃ phases from the water sonication process led to inactive samples. The ease of tunability without hazardous precursors during the synthesis procedure is demonstrated. The route presented here can be uniquely employed for designing and engineering on-demand functional materials for sensing applications.
