Extraction of magnetic circular dichroism effects from blended mixture of magnetic linear dichroism signals in the cobalt/Scotch tape system

Covalent Organic Frameworks with Tunable Chirality for Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) have attracted extensive interest for their potential applications in various enantioselective processes. However, the exploitation of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) that enables a new technology for the injection of spin polarized current without the need for a permanent magnetic layer within CCOFs remains a largely untapped area of research. Here, we demonstrate that, for the first time, COFs can be an attractive platform to develop spin filter materials with efficient CISS. This facilitates the design and synthesis of a new family of Zn(salen)-based 2D CCOFs, namely, CCOFs-9-12, by imine condensation of chiral 1,2-diaminocyclohexane and tri- or tetra(salicylaldehyde) derivatives. CCOF-9, distinguished by its unique C2 symmetric "armchair" tetrasubstituted pyrene conformation, exhibits the most pronounced chirality among these materials and serves as a solid-state host, enabling the enantioselective adsorption of racemic drugs with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of up to 97%. After substituting diamagnetic zinc(II) ions for paramagnetic cobalt(II), the resulting CCOF-9-Co not only retains its high crystallinity, porosity, and exceptional chirality but also exhibits enhanced conductivity, a crucial factor for the effective observation of CISS. Magnetic conductive atomic force microscopy showed that CCOF-9-Co exhibited a remarkable CISS effect with up to an 88-94% spin polarization ratio. This phenomenon is further confirmed by the increased intensity in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) when CCOF-9-Co is under an external magnetic field. This work therefore shows the tremendous potential of CCOFs for controlling spin selectivity and will stimulate the creation of new types of crystalline polymers with strong CISS effects for spin filters.

Magnetic Control of the Plasmonic Chirality in Gold Helicoids

Chiral plasmonic nanostructures have facilitated a promising method for manipulating the polarization state of light. While a precise structural modification at the nanometer-scale-level could offer chiroptic responses at various wavelength ranges, a system that allows fast response control of a given structure has been required. In this study, we constructed uniformly arranged chiral gold helicoids with cobalt thin-film deposition that exhibited a strong chiroptic response with magnetic controllability. Tunable circular dichroism (CD) values from 0.9° to 1.5° at 550 nm wavelength were achieved by reversing the magnetic field direction. In addition, a magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study revealed that the gap structure and size-related surface plasmon resonance induced MCD peaks. We demonstrated the transmitted color modulation, where the color dynamically changed from green-to-red, by controlling the field strength and polarizer axis. We believe current work broadens our understanding of magnetoplasmonic nanostructure and expands its potential applicability in optoelectronics or optical-communications.

Spin Selectivity of Chiral Mesostructured Iron Oxides with Different Magnetisms

Spin selectivity physically depends on either magnetic materials with strong internal magnetic fields or symmetry-breaking materials with large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the spin selectivity of symmetry-breaking magnetic materials is not understood. Herein, the spin selectivity of iron oxides with different magnetisms arising from varying spin alignment is investigated. Chiral mesostructured films of Fe₃ O₄ (CMFFs), γ-Fe₂ O₃ (CMγFs), and α-Fe₂ O₃ (CMαFs), which share the same mesostructure, are prepared by a controllable calcination process of chiral mesostructured FeOOH films (CMOFs) grown on the substrate via an amino acid-induced hydrothermal route. CMFFs and CMγFs with ferrimagnetism exhibit magnetic field-dependent and simultaneously chirality-independent magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) signals, while CMαFs with antiferromagnetism exhibit chirality-dependent, magnetic field-independent MCD signals. It is speculated that the competitive effect between the spin alignment-induced and chirality-induced effective magnetic fields determines the energy splitting of opposite spins in the materials with different magnetisms.

Homochiral Supramolecular Thin Film from Self-Assembly of Achiral Triarylamine Molecules by Circularly Polarized Light

Here, we report the formation of homochiral supramolecular thin film from achiral molecules, by using circularly polarized light (CPL) only as a chiral source, on the condition that irradiation of CPL does not induce a photochemical change of the achiral molecules. Thin films of self-assembled structures consisting of chiral supramolecular fibrils was obtained from the triarylamine derivatives through evaporation of the self-assembled triarylamine solution. The homochiral supramolecular helices with the desired handedness was achieved by irradiation of circularly polarized visible light during the self-assembly process, and the chiral stability of supramolecular self-assembled product was achieved by photopolymerization of the diacetylene moieties at side chains of the building blocks, with irradiation of circularly polarized ultraviolet light. This work provides a novel methodology for the generation of homochiral supramolecular thin film from the corresponding achiral molecules.
