Characterization and Interpretation of Cd (II) Adsorption by Different Modified Rice Straws under Contrasting Conditions

Effect of citric acid modification on the properties of hydrochar and pyrochar and their adsorption performance toward methylene blue: crucial roles of minerals and oxygen functional groups

Modification is widely used to enhance the adsorption performance of pristine hydrochar (HBC) and pyrochar (BC). However, comparisons between modified HBC and BC toward pollutant removal have rarely been reported. In this study, pristine HBC and BC derived from rice straw were first produced, and then citric acid (CA) was used as a modifier to synthesize CA-modified HBC (CAHBC) and CA-modified BC (CABC). Furthermore, the adsorption performance of biochars toward methylene blue (MB) was investigated. The results showed that BC exhibits relatively rough surfaces and contains more minerals (ash), whereas HBC has plentiful O-containing functional groups and fewer minerals. CA modification partially removed minerals from the surface of BC, which weakened the ion exchange, surface complexation, and n-π interaction, resulting in a lower adsorption ability toward MB. By contrast, CA produced more O-containing functional groups on the surface of HBC, which strengthened the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, thus increasing the adsorption capacity toward MB. The two-compartment model showed a good fit to the adsorption process of MB on CAHBC, and the isotherm data for MB adsorption by HBC and CAHBC are suitable for the Freundlich model. The highest adsorption amount of MB using CAHBC was 80.13 mg·g-1, which was 27.66% higher than that for CABC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the carboxyl groups in the surface functional groups of CAHBC played a crucial role in the MB adsorption process. In addition, CAHBC showed a good performance for a wide range of pH values (4.0-10.0) and under the interference of coexisting ions, and also presented a recycling ability. Furthermore, the adsorption of MB on CAHBC biochar was a spontaneous, exothermic, degree-of-randomness-increasing process. Consequently, CA modification of HBC is a promising strategy and could be used for MB removal from aquatic environments.

Microplastic and adhesive free, multifunctional, circular economy approach-based biomass-derived drinking straws

Generation of voluminous single-use plastic waste and byproducts from agricultural harvests such as rice straws (RSs) are major global challenges due to their disposal issues, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and affecting the ecological system with threats to human health. A scalable, low-cost, and eco-friendly strategy for fabricating cellulose-silica-based drinking straws, free from microplastics and adhesive, through strategic valorization of RS is reported. Functionalization by delignification-cum-crosslinking of RS leads to development of straws with high water stability (∼5 days), solvothermal stability (0°C-95°C), tensile strength (128 MPa), low migration values (<60 mg/kg), improved biodegradability (∼126 days) with reduced wettability and hydrophobicity. RS drinking straws show antibacterial, self-cleaning, self-healing, anti-fizzing, reusable, and generate significantly lower carbon footprint (<99.8% and <53.34% global warming potential than metal and polylactic acid straws). Repurposing of agro-wastes from farms to commercially viable drinking straws which biodegrades after its consumption achieves the goal of circular economy and sustainable development.

Effective biosorption of Al ions from drinking water by lignocellulosic biomass rice straw

High concentration of aluminum (Al) in drinking water is a major intake source of it and can result in serious diseases. Rice straw (RS) as lignocellulosic biomasses has great potential to peak up metal ions from aqueous environment, however, feasibility of Al3+ removal by RS has not been investigated yet. The present study aimed to evaluate the capacity of RS as a novel biosorbent for Al3+ from drinking water. Biosorption characteristics of RS were surveyed through several biological and physiochemical techniques. Additionally, isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were evaluated using various common models. BET profiles revealed the presence of textural mesoporosity on heterogeneous surface, which leading to improve the biosorption capacity. SEM-EDS analysis confirmed the morphological changes as irregularly particles of Al3+ on external surface via physical mechanism. The results of bioassays and FTIR analysis showed carboxylic and hydroxyl groups in lignin and pectin as the main Al3+ binding site. The batch experimental results showed the maximum biosorption capacity of 283.09 mg/g and removal efficiency of 94.86% for Al3+ at biosorbent dosage of 0.05 g/100 mL, contact time of 50 min, pH 7.5, and temperature of 30 °C. The Freundlich model has the best match and suggests the biosorption process as a multi-layer. According to the results of free activation energy, biosorption process was also physical. As thermodynamic result, the biosorption behavior was found spontaneous and endothermic. Consequently, results showed RS as an economical biosorbent for reducing Al3+ of drinking water. Meanwhile, it can be considered as one of the most appropriate methods for management of rice paddies waste.

Acid-activated corn silk as a promising phytosorbent for uptake of Malachite green and Cd (II) ion from simulated wastewater: equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Malachite green (MG) dye and cadmium metal ion are toxic pollutants that should be removed from aqueous environment. The recent study aimed to examine the adsorption behavior of MG dye and Cd (II) from wastewater onto low-cost adsorbent prepared by activating corn silk with nitric acid (ACS) and characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, BET and TGA. The optimum MG and Cd (II) adsorption was observed at pH 7 and pH 9 and maximum uptake of both pollutants was at 0.5 g dosage, 60 mins contact time and 20 mg/L initial concentration. The retention of dye and metal ion by the studied adsorbent was best fit to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second order kinetics. The maximum monolayer coverage capacity of ACS for MG dye and Cd (II) ion was 18.38 mg/g and 25.53 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic studies predicted a spontaneous reaction with exothermic process for MG dye whereas an endothermic and spontaneous process was confirmed for Cd ion based on estimated parameters. The adsorption mechanism of MG dye and Cd (II) uptake was by combination of electrostatic interaction, pore diffusion, ion exchange, pie-pie attraction, hydrogen bonding, and complexation. The adsorbed pollutants were effectively desorbed with significant regeneration efficiency after successive five cycles that proved the potential of low-cost biosorbent for selective sequestration of cationic dye and divalent metal ion from effluents.

Efficient dye adsorption of mesoporous activated carbon from bamboo parenchyma cells by phosphoric acid activation

In order to solve the environmental damage caused by the discharge of dyes as industrial wastewater, the development of efficient and sustainable adsorbents is the key, while most of the previous studies on bamboo parenchyma cells have focused on their microstructural, functional and mechanical properties, and few of the properties in adsorption have been investigated. To evaluate the role of the unique microstructure of bamboo parenchyma cells on adsorption after carbonization and activation, PC-based activated carbon (PPAC) was fabricated by the phosphoric acid activation method and tested for adsorption using methylene blue (MB). The effect of mesoporous structure on MB adsorption was investigated in detail using PPAC-30C impregnated with phosphoric acid at a concentration of 30%. The results showed that the adsorption performance was influenced by single-factor experiments (e.g., pH, activated carbon dosing). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics could conform to the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.983-0.994) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.822-0.991) respectively, and the maximum MB adsorption capacity of adsorbent was 576 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanism of MB on PPAC-30C includes physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and the π-π conjugation effect, which was dominated by physical adsorption. The results of this study show that PPAC has good application prospects for cationic dye removal.

Removal of cadmium from aqueous solution by magnetic biochar: adsorption characteristics and mechanism

Experiments were conducted to investigate the potential of the efficient resource utilization of waste cow manure and corn straw in an agricultural ecosystem. In this study, a magnetic cow manure and straw biochar were synthesized by a co-precipitation method, and cadmium (Cd(II)) was removed by adsorption in aqueous solution. Several physicochemical characterization techniques were applied, including SEM, BET, Zeta, FTIR, Raman, XPS, and VSM. The effects of pH value, magnetic biochar content, adsorption kinetics, and isothermal adsorption on the adsorption of Cd(II) were investigated. The physicochemical characterizations revealed that the physical and chemical properties of the magnetic biochar were substantially changed compared to the unmodified biochar. The results showed that the surface of the biochar became rough, the number of oxygen (O)-containing functional groups increased, and the specific surface area increased. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity was affected by pH, magnetic biochar addition, Cd(II) concentration, and adsorption time. The adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption experiments showed that the Cd(II) adsorption processes of the cow manure and corn straw magnetic biochars were consistent with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results also showed that the Cd(II) adsorption effect of cow manure magnetic biochar was found to be more effective than that of corn straw magnetic biochar. The optimal conditions for Cd(II) adsorption were 800 ℃ for cow manure magnetic biochar, with a pH value of 5 and 0.14 g biochar addition, and 600 ℃ for straw magnetic biochar with a pH value of 8 and 0.12 g biochar addition. In conclusion, the cow manure magnetic biochar was an effective adsorbent for the absorption of Cd(II) in wastewater.

The Physicochemical Characteristics and Heavy Metal Retention Capability of Black Liquor Lignin-Based Biochars

Due to its high carbon content, lignin, particularly for lignin-containing solid waste, is considered an excellent raw material for the preparation of carbon materials like biochar. To produce high-quality lignin-based biochar (LGBCs), lignin extracted from black liquor was employed to prepare biochar at various pyrolysis temperatures (300~600 °C). The physicochemical properties of LGBCs were assessed using scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the adsorption capability and potential mechanism of LGBCs in removing Cd(II) were investigated as well. The results indicate that LGBCs produced at higher pyrolysis temperatures exhibit rougher surfaces and more developed pore structures, which facilitate the exposure of numerous active adsorption sites. The adsorption of Cd(II) by LGBCs generally follows the order of LG-300C < LG-400C < LG-500C < LG-600C. According to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of LG-600C for Cd(II) is calculated to be 18.54 mg/g. Adsorption mechanism analysis reveals that the complexation interaction, dependent on the surface functional groups, plays a crucial role in the adsorption of Cd(II) by LGBCs prepared at higher pyrolysis temperatures. This study demonstrates that, by controlling the pyrolysis temperature during biochar preparation, high-quality lignin-based biochar can be readily obtained.

Study on H2SO4-modified corn straw biochar as substrate material of constructed wetland

The high value resource utilization of corn straw is a long-term problem at present and in the future. Biochar preparation is an important utilization way of corn straw. The research on city tail water treated by constructed wetland (CW) with biochar was carried out to further increase the wastewater treatment capacity of the CW. Surface characterization, structural characteristics, and adsorption of straw biochar modified by different acids were measured. The study found that the ability of H2SO4 to remove ash from biochar was stronger than other acids and H2SO4-biochar was easy to be cleaned without H2SO4 residue. The performance of biochar modified by H2SO4 was obviously better than other acids, and the biochar adsorption was enhanced. The modification of biochar substrate modified by H2SO4 in CW reduced the change of electrical conductivity (EC) and promoted denitrification. H2SO4-modified biochar promoted the absorption of N and P by Iris pseudacorus L. The compound modification effect of straw biochar was obvious. The results revealed the acid modification characteristics of straw biochar, which were beneficial for increasing the wastewater treatment rate by CW. This study will promote the sustainable development of CW.

Simultaneous alleviation of Cd availability in contaminated soil and accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Fe-Mn oxide-modified biochar

Fe-Mn oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was used to remediate Cd-contaminated soil and mitigate Cd accumulation in rice. The roles of Fe and Mn in soil Cd immobilization and in controlling Cd uptake by rice were investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and chemical analysis. Fe and Mn loaded on BC-FM increased the removal efficiencies of CaCl₂ extractable Cd in soil and Cd in pore water compared to those in only biochar (BC)-treated soil, with maximum removal rates at 67.9 % and 77.8 %, respectively. The XPS results indicated that the redox reactions of the Fe-Mn oxides on BC-FM surface affected Cd immobilization in the soil. The Fe (II/III) components on BC-FM were primarily converted to Fe₃O₄ in the soil system, which may form stable complexes with Cd²⁺ (Fe-O-Cd) during the entire rice growth period, and Cd may be bound to MnO or Mn₂O₃ in the form of CdMn₂O₄. The excellent adsorption performance of BC-FM enhanced by Fe-Mn oxides reduced the available Cd in the soil and stimulated Fe and Mn transport in rice, thereby inhibiting Cd accumulation in the aerial parts of rice. Cd concentrations in brown rice under BC-FM treatments reached the national safety standard (0.2 mg/kg, GB2762-2017). And BC-FM significantly increased the biomass of brown rice with a maximum rate of 26.8 %. These findings suggest that BC-FM could be used as an efficient material for Cd-contaminated soil remediation, and Fe-Mn plays important role in immobilizing Cd in soil and reducing Cd transport in rice.

Effects and mechanism on cadmium adsorption removal by CaCl2-modified biochar from selenium-rich straw

As every-one knows, cadmium contamination poses a significant and permanent threat to people and aquatic life. Therefore, research on how to remove cadmium from wastewater is essential to protect the natural environment. In this study, agricultural and forestry waste straw sprayed with selenium-enriched foliar fertilizer was prepared as biochar, which was altered by calcium chloride (CaCl₂) to remove Cd²⁺ from water. The outcomes demonstrated that biochar generated by pyrolysis at 700 °C (BC700) had the best adsorption effect. Secondly, pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption models were used to predict the Cd²⁺ adsorption. Finally, electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, and complexation of oxygen functional groups (OFGs) were demonstratedto be the main adsorption mechanisms. These conclusions indicate that selenium-rich straw biochar is a novel adsorbent for agroforestry waste recovery. Meanwhile, this work will offer a promising strategy for the overall utilization of rice straw.

Excess sludge biochar facilitates persulfate activation for highly efficient tetracycline removal

This study proposed a novel advanced oxidation system to treat metal and antibiotic pollution in water simultaneously. Meanwhile, the enhancement effect of absorbed metal pollution on the activation of persulfate in the system was also investigated. As the most widely used and polluting material, tetracycline (TC) and metal Fe were used as the pollutant models. In this study, a carbonaceous material (BC) was prepared from excess sludge and then combined with the persulfate system (Fe/BC/PS). It was found that the best biochar was obtained when the pyrolysis temperature reached 500 °C (BC500), with the specific surface area of 39.712 m²/g. Combining it with 300 mg/L PS, the removal rate of 120 mg/L TC reached 70.6%. Moreover, the sludge biochar itself possessed numerous reaction sites and good defective structure, which provided a perfect reaction site for the variable metals absorbed by BC. They accelerated electron conduction greatly, which led to the activation of PS very active and generating far more active radicals than normal. In addition, it also proposed the rational pathway and potential mechanism of TC degradation based on the degradation intermediates. This study has a high reference value for resource utilization of sewage sludge and antibiotics removal from water.

Immobilization on anionic metal(loid)s in soil by biochar: A meta-analysis assisted by machine learning

Metal pollution in soil has become one of the most serious environmental problems in China. Biochar is one of the most widely used remediation agents for soil metal pollution. However, the literature does not provide a consistent picture of the performance of biochar on the immobilization of anionic metal(loid)s, especially arsenic, in soil. To obtain a baseline understanding on the interactions of metals and biochar, 597 data records on four metal(loid)s (As, Cr, Sb and V) were collected from 70 publications for this meta-analysis, and the results are highlighted below. Biochar has a significant immobilization effect on anionic metal(loid)s in soil and reduces the bioavailability of these metals to plants. Subgroup analysis found that biochar could decrease the potential mobility of Cr, Sb and V, but the immobilization effect on As was not always consistent. Meanwhile, biochar pH and soil pH are the most key factors affecting the immobilization effect. To summarize, biochar can effectively immobilize Cr, Sb and V in soil, but more attention should be given to As immobilization in future applications. By regulating the properties of biochar and appropriate modification, anionic metal(loid)s in soil can be immobilized more effectively. Hence, both of the soil quality and crop quality can be improved.

A Review of the Sustainable Utilization of Rice Residues for Bioenergy Conversion Using Different Valorization Techniques, Their Challenges, and Techno-Economic Assessment

The impetus to predicting future biomass consumption focuses on sustainable energy, which concerns the non-renewable nature of fossil fuels and the environmental challenges associated with fossil fuel burning. However, the production of rice residue in the form of rice husk (RH) and rice straw (RS) has brought an array of benefits, including its utilization as biofuel to augment or replace fossil fuel. Rice residue characterization, valorization, and techno-economic analysis require a comprehensive review to maximize its inherent energy conversion potential. Therefore, the focus of this review is on the assessment of rice residue characterization, valorization approaches, pre-treatment limitations, and techno-economic analyses that yield a better biofuel to adapt to current and future energy demand. The pre-treatment methods are also discussed through torrefaction, briquetting, pelletization and hydrothermal carbonization. The review also covers the limitations of rice residue utilization, as well as the phase structure of thermochemical and biochemical processes. The paper concludes that rice residue is a preferable sustainable biomass option for both economic and environmental growth.

The role of polysaccharides functional groups in cadmium binding in root cell wall of a cadmium-safe rice line

Exploring the mechanism of cadmium (Cd) accumulation in Cd-safe rice lines is beneficial for ensuring rice safety. D62B, a Cd-safe rice line, accumulates less than 0.2 mg Cd kg^-1 in the brown rice due to strong capacity of Cd retention in the roots, and the root cell wall (RCW) polysaccharides play important roles. However, specific underlying mechanism of Cd binding on the polysaccharides is little known. In this study, the role of polysaccharides, especially pectin and hemicellulose 1 (HC1), in RCW of D62B was investigated by adsorption experiments and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis compared with a common rice line (Luhui17). Cadmium was adsorbed on RCW of two rice lines by a multilayer and inhomogeneous chemisorption way with the force of ion transfer or exchange. Cadmium was adsorbed on RCW rapidly at first stage with the limit of internal and external diffusion, and gradually reached saturation. With the removal of pectin, the Cd adsorption rate, maximum Cd adsorption amount and the shift degree of carboxyl groups in the RCW of D62B sharply decreased, which showed advantages compared with Luhui17. Sequential removal of HC1 further decreased the maximum Cd adsorption amount and the shift degree of hydroxyl groups. The results showed that more available functional groups, especially carboxyl groups in pectin and hydroxyl groups in HC1, contributed to Cd immobilization within the RCW of Cd-safe rice line, thus limiting Cd translocation to the shoot and reducing Cd accumulation in the brown rice.

Mechanism and isotherm modeling of effective adsorption of malachite green as endocrine disruptive dye using Acid Functionalized Maize Cob (AFMC)

Cationic Malachite green has been identified as a candidate for the endocrine disruptive compound found in the environment. In this study, the mechanism and isotherm modeling of effective adsorption of cationic malachite green dye onto acid-functionalized maize cob (AFMC) was investigated by batch technique. The operational parameters such as initial concentration (100–600 mg/L); contact time (10–120 min) and pH (3–10) influenced the removal efficiency and quantity adsorbed. A maximum of 99.3% removal efficiency was obtained at optimum conditions. AFMC physicochemical properties (surface area 1329 m²/g and particle size 300 μm < Ф < 250 μm) enhanced its efficiency. Based on R² > 0.97 and consistently low values of adsorption statistical error functions (ASEF), equilibrium data were best fitted to Freundlich isotherm. Kinetic data were best described by a pseudo-second-order model with consistent R² > 0.98 and validated by ASEF. The mechanism of the process was better described by intraparticle diffusion. Evidence of the adsorption process was confirmed by the change in morphology via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and surface chemistry by Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR). The performance of AFMC enlisted it as a sustainable and promising low-cost adsorbent from agro-residue for treatment of endocrine disruptive dye polluted water.

Enhanced removal of cadmium from wastewater with coupled biochar and Bacillus subtilis

Shortcomings of individual biochar or microbial technologies often exist in heavy metal removal from wastewater and may be circumvented by coupled use of biochar and microorganisms. In this study, Bacillus subtilis and each of three biochars of different origins (corn stalk, peanut shell, and pine wood) were coupled forming composite systems to treat a cadmium (Cd, 50 mg/L) wastewater formulated with CdCl₂ in batch tests. Biochar in composite system enhanced the activity and Cd adsorption of B. subtilis. Compared with single systems with Cd removal up to 33%, the composite system with corn stalk biochar showed up to 62% Cd removal, which was greater than the sum of respective single B. subtilis and biochar systems. Further analysis showed that the removal of Cd by the corn stalk composite system could be considered to consist of three successive stages, that is, the biochar-dominant adsorption stage, the B. subtilis-dominant adsorption stage, and the final biofilm formation stage. The final stage may have provided the composite system with the ability to achieve prolonged steady removal of Cd. The biochar-microorganism composite system shows a promising application for heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Polystyrene Magnetic Nanocomposites as Antibiotic Adsorbents

There are different ways for antibiotics to enter the aquatic environment, with wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) considered to be one of the main points of entrance. Even treated wastewater effluent can contain antibiotics, since WWTP cannot eliminate the presence of antibiotics. Therefore, adsorption can be a sustainable option, compared to other tertiary treatments. In this direction, a versatile synthesis of poly(styrene-block-acrylic acid) diblock copolymer/Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite (abbreviated as P(St-b-AAc)/Fe3O4)) was achieved for environmental applications, and particularly for the removal of antibiotic compounds. For this reason, the synthesis of the P(St-b-AAc) diblock copolymer was conducted with a reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) method. Monodisperse superparamagnetic nanocomposite with carboxylic acid groups of acrylic acid was adsorbed on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis. Then, the nanoparticles were applied to remove ciprofloxacin (antibiotic drug compound) from aqueous solutions. The effects of various parameters, such as initial drug concentration, solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time on the process were extensively studied. Operational parameters and their efficacy in the removal of Ciprofloxacin were studied. Kinetic and adsorption isothermal studies were also carried out. The maximum removal efficiency of ciprofloxacin (97.5%) was found at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L, pH 7, adsorbent's dosage 2 mg/L, contact time equal to 37.5 min. The initial concentration of antibiotic and the dose of the adsorbent presented the highest impact on efficiency. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin was better fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9995), while the kinetics were better fitted to second-order kinetic equation (R2 = 0.9973).
