Light Intensity-dependent Variation in Defect Contributions to Charge Transport and Recombination in a Planar MAPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cell

The Electrical Behaviors of Grain Boundaries in Polycrystalline Optoelectronic Materials

Polycrystalline optoelectronic materials are widely used for photoelectric signal conversion and energy harvesting and play an irreplaceable role in the semiconductor field. As an important factor in determining the optoelectronic properties of polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries (GBs) are the focus of research. Particular emphases are placed on the generation and height of GB barriers, how carriers move at GBs, whether GBs act as carrier transport channels or recombination sites, and how to change the device performance by altering the electrical behaviors of GBs. This review introduces the evolution of GB theory and experimental observation history, classifies GB electrical behaviors from the perspective of carrier dynamics, and summarizes carrier transport state under external conditions such as bias and illumination and the related band bending. Then the carrier scattering at GBs and the electrical differences between GBs and twin boundaries are discussed. Last, the review describes how the electrical behaviors of GBs can be influenced and modified by treatments such as passivation or by consciously adjusting the distribution of grain boundary elements. By studying the carrier dynamics and the relevant electrical behaviors of GBs in polycrystalline materials, researchers can develop optoelectronics with higher performance.

Inhibiting Ion Migration Through Chemical Polymerization and Chemical Chelation Toward Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

The migration of ions is known to be associated with various detrimental phenomena, including current density-voltage hysteresis, phase segregation, etc., which significantly limit the stability and performance of perovskite solar cells, impeding their progress toward commercial applications. To address these challenges, we propose incorporating a polymerizable organic small molecule monomer, N-carbamoyl-2-propan-2-ylpent-4-enamide (Apronal), into the perovskite film to form a crosslinked polymer (P-Apronal) through thermal crosslinking. The carbonyl and amino groups in Apronal effectively interact with shallow defects, such as uncoordinated Pb2+ and iodide vacancies, leading to the formation of high-quality films with enhanced crystallinity and reduced lattice strain. Furthermore, the introduction of P-Apronal improves energy level alignment, and facilitates charge carrier extraction and transport, resulting in a champion efficiency of 25.09 %. Importantly, P-Apronal can effectively suppress the migration of I- ions and improve the long-term stability of the devices. The present strategy sets forth a path to attain long-term stability and enhanced efficiency in perovskite solar cells.

Single-Crystal Nanowire Cesium Tin Triiodide Perovskite Solar Cell

This work reports for the first time a highly efficient single-crystal cesium tin triiodide (CsSnI₃ ) perovskite nanowire solar cell. With a perfect lattice structure, low carrier trap density (≈5 × 10¹⁰ cm^-3 ), long carrier lifetime (46.7 ns), and excellent carrier mobility (>600 cm² V^-1 s^-1 ), single-crystal CsSnI₃ perovskite nanowires enable a very attractive feature for flexible perovskite photovoltaics to power active micro-scale electronic devices. Using CsSnI₃ single-crystal nanowire in conjunction with highly conductive wide bandgap semiconductors as front-surface-field layers, an unprecedented efficiency of 11.7% under AM 1.5G illumination is achieved. This work demonstrates the feasibility of all-inorganic tin-based perovskite solar cells via crystallinity and device-structure improvement for the high-performance, and thus paves the way for the energy supply to flexible wearable devices in the future.

Highly Efficient and Stable Self-Powered Perovskite Photodiode by Cathode-Side Interfacial Passivation with Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)

For several years now, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have shown remarkable progress in the field of opto-electronic devices. Herein, we introduce a cathode-side passivation layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for a highly efficient and stable self-powered CH₃NH₃PbI₃ perovskite-based photodiode. For effective noise-current suppression, the PMMA passivation layer was employed between a light-absorbing layer of CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPbI₃) perovskite and an electron transport layer of [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester. Due to its passivation effect on defects in perovskite film, the PMMA passivation layer can effectively suppress interface recombination and reduce the leakage/noise current. Without external bias, the MAPbI₃ photodiode with the PMMA layer demonstrated a significantly high specific detectivity value (~1.07 × 10¹² Jones) compared to that of a conventional MAPbI₃ photodiode without a PMMA layer. Along with the enhanced specific detectivity, a wide linear dynamic response (~127 dB) with rapid rise (~50 μs) and decay (~17 μs) response times was obtained. Furthermore, highly durable dynamic responses of the PMMA-passivated MAPbI₃ photodiode were observed even after a long storage time of 500 h. The results achieved with the cathode-side PMMA-passivated perovskite photodiodes represent a new means by which to realize highly sensitive and stable self-powered photodiodes for use in developing novel opto-electronic devices.

Self-powered CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite photodiode with a noise-suppressible passivation layer of poly(methyl methacrylate)

Organohalide perovskite materials and related optoelectronic applications have drawn significant attention due to their promising high-performance photon-to-electricity conversion efficiencies. Herein, we demonstrate a highly sensitive self-powered perovskite-based photodetector created with a noise-current-suppressible passivation layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) at the interface between a CH₃NH₃PbI₃ light-absorbing layer and a NiO_x hole-transporting layer. Along with the defect passivation effect, the PMMA layer effectively diminishes unwanted carrier recombination losses at the interface, resulting in a significant reduction of the leakage/noise current. Consequently, without external bias, a remarkably high level of specific detectivity (∼4.5 × 10¹³ Jones from the dark current and ∼0.81 × 10¹² Jones from the noise current) can be achieved due to the use of the PMMA passivation layer, greatly exceeding those of conventional unpassivated perovskite devices. Moreover, we observed a very wide linear dynamic response range of ∼129 dB together with rapid rise and decay response times of ∼52 and ∼18 µs, respectively. Overall, these results provide a solid foundation for advanced interface-engineering to realize high-performance self-powered perovskite photodetectors for various optoelectronic applications.

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated via Au and Ag electrodes

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly based on the methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) formulation, have been of intense interest for the past decade within the photovoltaics (PV) community, given the stupendous rise in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) attributed to these perovskite formulations, where PCEs have exceeded 25%. However, their long-term stability under operational conditions and environmental storage are still prime challenges to be overcome towards their commercialization. Although studies on the intrinsic perovskite absorber stability have been conducted previously, there are no clear mechanisms for the interaction of electrode-induced absorber degradation pathways, which is the focus of this study. In this report, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis on the impact of the electrode collector layer, specifically Ag and Au, on the degradation mechanism associated with the MAPbI₃ and a triple cation absorber, Cs_0.05FA_0.79MA_0.16PbI_2.45Br_0.55. Notably, Au-based PSCs for both absorbers in an n-i-p architecture showed superior PCE over Ag-based PSCs, where the optimized PCE of MAPbI₃ and triple cation-based PSCs was 15.39% and 18.21%, respectively. On the other hand, optimized PCE of MAPbI₃ and triple cation-based PSCs with Ag electrodes was 3.02% and 16.44%, respectively. In addition, the Ag-based PSCs showed a rapid decrease in PCE over Au-based PSCs through operational stability measurements. We hypothesize the mechanism of degradation, arising from the Ag interaction with the absorber through the formation of AgI in the PSCs, leads to corrosion of the perovskite absorber, as opposed to the benign AuI when Au electrodes are used in the solar cell stack. Additionally, novel use of photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) here, allowed us to access key features of the perovskite absorber in situ, while it was in contact with the various layers within the n-i-p solar cell stack. A quenching in the PL peak in the case of Ag-contacted MAPbI₃ provided direct evidence of the Ag corrupting the optical properties of the absorber through the formation of AgI which our X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed. This was supported by the fact that an emission peak was still present in the triple cation Ag-device. For the Au-contacted MAPbI₃ the presence of a well-defined PL peak, though attenuated from the triple cation Au-device, suggested the AuI does not quell the emission spectrum for either the triple cation or the MAPbI₃ absorber. The findings should aid in the understanding and design of new electrode materials with PSCs, which will help accelerate their introduction into the commercial sector in the future.

Recent Development of Carbon-Nanotube-Based Solar Heat Absorption Devices and Their Application

Population growth and the current global weather patterns have heightened the need to optimize solar energy harvesting. Solar-powered water filtration, electricity generation, and water heating have gradually multiplied as viable sources of fresh water and power generation, especially for isolated places without access to water and energy. The unique thermal and optical characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enable their use as efficient solar absorbers with enhanced overall photothermal conversion efficiency under varying solar light intensities. Due to their exceptional optical absorption efficiency, low cost, environmental friendliness, and natural carbon availability, CNTs have attracted intense scientific interest in the production of solar thermal systems. In this review study, we evaluated CNT-based water purification, thermoelectric generation, and water heating systems under varying solar levels of illumination, ranging from domestic applications to industrial usage. The use of CNT composites or multilayered structures is also reviewed in relation to solar heat absorber applications. An aerogel containing CNTs was able to ameliorate water filtering performance at low solar intensities. CNTs with a Fresnel lens improved thermoelectric output power at high solar intensity. Solar water heating devices utilizing a nanofluid composed of CNTs proved to be the most effective. In this review, we also aimed to identify the most relevant challenges and promising opportunities in relation to CNT-based solar thermal devices.

Self-Powered UVC Photodetector Based on Europium Metal-Organic Framework for Facile Monitoring Invisible Fire

The effective use of a europium metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) as a photoabsorber material has been reported. Using the advantages of Eu-MOFs including simple preparation, wide bandgap structure, and stability in the environment, a self-powered and high UVC-selectivity detector based on Eu-MOF nanoparticles was prepared with a simple device geometry. The as-fabricated photodetector was highly sensitive to 254 nm UV illumination without an external power supply. Accordingly, it exhibited a high UVC-to-UVA rejection ratio (I₂₅₄/I₃₆₅ ≈ 40) and UVC-to-solar rejection ratio (I₂₅₄/I_solar light ≈ 34), a fast response time of 98/122 ms, a comparable on/off photocurrent ratio (107.33), and superior stability. The self-powered Eu-MOF photodetector can detect and monitor UV emission from an invisible fire in an early state at room temperature, suggesting practical use as a potential optoelectronic device.

Decreased surface defects and non-radiative recombination via the passivation of the halide perovskite film by 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid in triple-cation perovskite solar cells

Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) attract great research interest due to their significant device performance and optoelectronic properties. However, reducing charge recombination and efficiency loss due to surface defects of the perovskite layer are still big issues to overcome for PSCs. Herein, we have employed a simple molecule, 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid (2TiCOOH), via post-treatment to passivate the uncoordinated Pb²⁺ on the perovskite film surface and improve the stability at the perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD interface. The spectral results illustrate that the 2TiCOOH passivated devices exhibit higher carrier lifetime, charge extraction, and minimized defect induced recombination. Also, solar cells with 2TiCOOH show better charge collection, improved J_SC, FF, and outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE). In addition, 2TiCOOH passivated solar cells show tremendously stable performance output with less than 1% PCE drop after 100 days. This work provides a facile surface passivation strategy for fabricating highly efficient, low cost, and stable perovskite solar cells, which can be used for large scale technology and commercialization.

Surface-Passivated CsPbBr3 for Developing Efficient and Stable Perovskite Photovoltaics

All-inorganic perovskites consisting of only inorganic elements have been recently considered as highly stable semiconductors for photoactive layer of optoelectronics applications. However, the formation of high-quality thin film and trap-reduced interface has still remains an important task, which should be solved for improving the performances of all-inorganic perovskite-based photovoltaics. Here, we adopted facile method that could reduce charge-carrier recombination by depositing a passivation agent on the top surface of the CsPbBr3 all-inorganic perovskite layer. We also found that the CsPbBr3 perovskite photovoltaic prepared from surface treatment method using n-octylammonium bromide provides an improved stability in ambient environment and 1-sun illuminating condition. Therefore, the perovskite photovoltaics fabricated from our approach offered an improved power conversion efficiency of 5.44% over that of the control device without surface treatment (4.12%).

DC bias electric field effects on ac electrical conductivity of MAPbI3suggesting intrinsic changes on structure and charge carrier dynamics

Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) emerges as a promising halide perovskite material for the next generation of solar cells due to its high efficiency and flexibility in material growth. Despite intensive studies of their optical and electronic properties in the past ten years, there are no reports on dc bias electric field effects on conductivity in a wide temperature range. In this work, we report the combined effects of frequency, temperature, and dc bias electric field on the ac conductivity of MAPbI₃. We found that the results of dc bias electric fields are very contrasting in the tetragonal and cubic phases. In the tetragonal phase, sufficiently high dc bias electric fields induce a conductivity peak appearance ∼290 K well evidenced at frequencies higher than 100 kHz. Excluding possible degradation and extrinsic factors, we propose that this peak suggests a ferroelectric-like transition. In the absence of a dc bias electric field, the ac conductivity in the tetragonal phase increases with temperature while decreases with temperature in the cubic phase. Also, ac activation energies for tetragonal and cubic phases were found to be inversely and directly proportional to the dc bias electric field, respectively. This behavior was attributed to the ionic conduction, possibly of MA⁺and I^-ions, for the tetragonal phase. As for the cubic phase, the ac conduction dynamics appear to be metallic-like, which seems to change to a polaronic-controlled charge transport to increased dc bias electric fields.

Effect of polarization rotation on the optical and photovoltaic properties of BiFeO3thin films

Visible-light-active ferroelectric materials are gaining increasing attention due to the unique ferroelectric photovoltaic effect. To boost the light harvesting capability, vast research is devoted to band gap engineering by chemical substitutions, regardless of the side effect on ferroelectric polarization. Here, we focus on how polar order affects the optical and photovoltaic properties. Using BiFeO₃as the model system, we induce the polarization rotation by A-site La substitution, which results in continuous reduction of optical anisotropy of the samples, as revealed by the concerted optical characterizations. This further causes the decrease of angular dependence of ferroelectric photovoltaic effect on the light polarization. The results demonstrate the inner connection of the ferroelectric polarization and optical anisotropy via the lattice degree of freedom.

Polariton-assisted excitation energy channeling in organic heterojunctions

Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter states resulting from strong exciton-photon coupling. The wave function of the polariton is a mixture of light and matter, enabling long-range energy transfer between spatially separated chromophores. Moreover, their delocalized nature, inherited from the photon component, has been predicted to enhance exciton transport. Here, we strongly couple an organic heterojunction consisting of energy/electron donor and acceptor materials to the same cavity mode. Using time-resolved spectroscopy and optoelectrical characterization, we show that the rate of exciton harvesting is enhanced with one order of magnitude and the rate of energy transfer in the system is increased two- to threefold in the strong coupling regime. Our results exemplify two means of efficiently channeling excitation energy to a heterojunction interface, where charge separation can occur. This study opens a new door to increase the overall efficiency of light harvesting systems using the tool of strong light-matter interactions.

Highly efficient self-powered perovskite photodiode with an electron-blocking hole-transport NiOx layer

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite materials provide noteworthy compact systems that could offer ground-breaking architectures for dynamic operations and advanced engineering in high-performance energy-harvesting optoelectronic devices. Here, we demonstrate a highly effective self-powered perovskite-based photodiode with an electron-blocking hole-transport layer (NiOx). A high value of responsivity (R = 360 mA W-1) with good detectivity (D = 2.1 × 1011 Jones) and external quantum efficiency (EQE = 76.5%) is achieved due to the excellent interface quality and suppression of the dark current at zero bias voltage owing to the NiOx layer, providing outcomes one order of magnitude higher than values currently in the literature. Meanwhile, the value of R is progressively increased to 428 mA W-1 with D = 3.6 × 1011 Jones and EQE = 77% at a bias voltage of - 1.0 V. With a diode model, we also attained a high value of the built-in potential with the NiOx layer, which is a direct signature of the improvement of the charge-selecting characteristics of the NiOx layer. We also observed fast rise and decay times of approximately 0.9 and 1.8 ms, respectively, at zero bias voltage. Hence, these astonishing results based on the perovskite active layer together with the charge-selective NiOx layer provide a platform on which to realise high-performance self-powered photodiode as well as energy-harvesting devices in the field of optoelectronics.
