Emergence of global synchronization in directed excitatory networks of type I neurons

Criticality and partial synchronization analysis in Wilson-Cowan and Jansen-Rit neural mass models

Synchronization is a phenomenon observed in neuronal networks involved in diverse brain activities. Neural mass models such as Wilson-Cowan (WC) and Jansen-Rit (JR) manifest synchronized states. Despite extensive research on these models over the past several decades, their potential of manifesting second-order phase transitions (SOPT) and criticality has not been sufficiently acknowledged. In this study, two networks of coupled WC and JR nodes with small-world topologies were constructed and Kuramoto order parameter (KOP) was used to quantify the amount of synchronization. In addition, we investigated the presence of SOPT using the synchronization coefficient of variation. Both networks reached high synchrony by changing the coupling weight between their nodes. Moreover, they exhibited abrupt changes in the synchronization at certain values of the control parameter not necessarily related to a phase transition. While SOPT was observed only in JR model, neither WC nor JR model showed power-law behavior. Our study further investigated the global synchronization phenomenon that is known to exist in pathological brain states, such as seizure. JR model showed global synchronization, while WC model seemed to be more suitable in producing partially synchronized patterns.

Interplay of different synchronization modes and synaptic plasticity in a system of class I neurons

We analyze the effect of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) on a system of pulse-coupled class I neurons. Our research begins with a system of two mutually connected quadratic integrate-and-fire (QIF) neurons, which are canonical representatives of class I neurons. Along with various asymptotic modes previously observed in other neuronal models with plastic synapses, we found a stable synchronous mode characterized by unidirectional link from a slower neuron to a faster neuron. In this frequency-locked mode, the faster neuron emits multiple spikes per cycle of the slower neuron. We analytically obtain the Arnold tongues for this mode without STDP and with STDP. We also consider larger plastic networks of QIF neurons and show that the detected mode can manifest itself in such a way that slow neurons become pacemakers. As a result, slow and fast neurons can form large synchronous clusters that generate low-frequency oscillations. We demonstrate the generality of the results obtained with two connected QIF neurons using Wang-Buzsáki and Morris-Lecar biophysically plausible class I neuron models.

Frequency-Resolved Functional Connectivity: Role of Delay and the Strength of Connections

The brain functional network extracted from the BOLD signals reveals the correlated activity of the different brain regions, which is hypothesized to underlie the integration of the information across functionally specialized areas. Functional networks are not static and change over time and in different brain states, enabling the nervous system to engage and disengage different local areas in specific tasks on demand. Due to the low temporal resolution, however, BOLD signals do not allow the exploration of spectral properties of the brain dynamics over different frequency bands which are known to be important in cognitive processes. Recent studies using imaging tools with a high temporal resolution has made it possible to explore the correlation between the regions at multiple frequency bands. These studies introduce the frequency as a new dimension over which the functional networks change, enabling brain networks to transmit multiplex of information at any time. In this computational study, we explore the functional connectivity at different frequency ranges and highlight the role of the distance between the nodes in their correlation. We run the generalized Kuramoto model with delayed interactions on top of the brain's connectome and show that how the transmission delay and the strength of the connections, affect the correlation between the pair of nodes over different frequency bands.

Lag synchronization of coupled time-delayed FitzHugh-Nagumo neural networks via feedback control

Synchronization plays a significant role in information transfer and decision-making by neurons and brain neural networks. The development of control strategies for synchronizing a network of chaotic neurons with time delays, different direction-dependent coupling (unidirectional and bidirectional), and noise, particularly under external disturbances, is an essential and very challenging task. Researchers have extensively studied the synchronization mechanism of two coupled time-delayed neurons with bidirectional coupling and without incorporating the effect of noise, but not for time-delayed neural networks. To overcome these limitations, this study investigates the synchronization problem in a network of coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neurons by incorporating time delays, different direction-dependent coupling (unidirectional and bidirectional), noise, and ionic and external disturbances in the mathematical models. More specifically, this study investigates the synchronization of time-delayed unidirectional and bidirectional ring-structured FHN neuronal systems with and without external noise. Different gap junctions and delay parameters are used to incorporate time-delay dynamics in both neuronal networks. We also investigate the influence of the time delays between connected neurons on synchronization conditions. Further, to ensure the synchronization of the time-delayed FHN neuronal networks, different adaptive control laws are proposed for both unidirectional and bidirectional neuronal networks. In addition, necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve synchronization are provided by employing the Lyapunov stability theory. The results of numerical simulations conducted for different-sized multiple networks of time-delayed FHN neurons verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control schemes.
