Optical and spectroscopic study of a supersonic flowing helium plasma: energy transport in the afterglow

Identification of Different Classes of VOCs Based on Optical Emission Spectra Using a Dielectric Barrier Helium Plasma Coupled with a Mini Spectrometer

In this study, a micro helium dielectric barrier discharge (μHDBD) plasma device fabricated using 3D printing and molding techniques was coupled with a mini spectrometer to detect and identify different classes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using optical emission spectrometry (OES). We tested 11 VOCs belonging to three different classes (straight-chain alkanes, aromatics, and polar organic compounds). Our results clearly demonstrate that the optical emission spectra of different classes of VOCs show clear differences, and therefore, can be used for identification. Additionally, the emission spectra of VOCs with a similar structure (such as n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, and n-nonane) have similar optical emission spectrum shape. Acetone and ethanol also have similar emission wavelengths, but they show different line intensities for the same concentrations. We also found that the side-chain group of aromatics will also affect the emission spectra even though they have a similar structure (all have a benzene ring). Moreover, our μHDBD-OES system can also identify multiple compounds in VOC mixtures. Our work also demonstrates the possibility of identifying different classes of VOCs by the OES shape.

Recent Achievements of the ERNA Collaboration

For more than two decades, the ERNA collaboration has investigated nuclear processes of astrophysical interest through the direct measurement of cross sections or the identification of the nucleosynthesis effects. Measurements of cross-section, reported in this publication, of radiative capture reactions have been mainly conducted using the ERNA Recoil Mass Separator, and more recently with an array of charged particle detector telescopes designed for nuclear astrophysics measurements. Some results achieved with ERNA will be reviewed, with a focus on the results most relevant for nucleosynthesis in AGB and advanced burning phases.

Experimental study on the performances of second-harmonic dispersion interferometers at 10.6 µm and 1064 nm for plasma density measurements

Two common-path interferometers based on CO₂ and Nd:Y₃Al₅O₁₂ (Nd:YAG) lasers are benchmarked with a two-arm microwave interferometer on a hydrogen plasma produced by an RF discharge and injected into a large magnetic-confinement vessel. The ∼10¹⁹m^-2 line-integrated electron density is clearly measured in agreement by the interferometers. The frequency spectrum of the measured data is analyzed on the 20 kHz range for all interferometers and up to 600 kHz for the Nd:YAG laser-based interferometer. Mechanical vibration measurements performed on the components of the two common-path interferometers result in a peak-to-peak displacement up to about one and twenty wavelengths for the CO₂ and Nd:YAG laser-based interferometers, respectively. Such results set for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a quantitative limit for the displacement that the two second-harmonic dispersion interferometers can sustain while still providing a high sensitivity for accurate plasma density measurements.
