Speciation of chromium in waters using dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with magnetic ferrite and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Direct immersion dual-drop microextraction for simultaneous separation and enrichment of Cr(III) and Cr(IV) in food samples prior to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry detection

Non-chromatographic speciation methods generally involve speciation conversion, which may cause sample contamination, analysis errors and tedious operations. In this work, a direct immersion dual-drop microextraction (DIDDME) was firstly developed for separation and preconcentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). In DIDDME, two organic drops on needle tips of microsyringes were concurrently immersed in a stirred sample solution. Each drop contains a chelating reagent for reacting with a specific species. Thus, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were selectively extracted into different drops. This method afforded detection limits of 3.0 and 4.1 ng/L, quantification limitof 10 ng/L and 14 ng/L, linear range of 0.01-30 ng mL^-1 and enrichment factors of 354-fold and 326-fold for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively. Precisions like repeatability and reproducibility were assessed by calculating relative standard deviations, which were lower than 5.4 % and 6.9 %, respectively. This procedure was used successfully for quantification of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in food samples.

A novel separation and preconcentration methodology based on direct immersion dual-drop microextraction for speciation of inorganic chromium in environmental water samples

In this study, for the first time, a novel separation and preconcentration method of direct immersion dual-drop microextraction (DIDDME) was proposed for the species of inorganic chromium (Cr(III) and Cr(VI)) followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry detection. The methodology is based on that two organic drops hold on the needle tips of microsyringes were concurrently immersed in a stirred sample solution. Each drop contains a chelating reagent, which can react with a specific species under the same pH value. Therefore, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) can be selectively extracted into different drops. This procedure did not require tedious and complicated pre-oxidation/pre-reduction and centrifugation/filtration operations, which may lead to the risk of sample contamination and analysis errors. Main parameters influencing separation, preconcentration and identification of the target species were investigated. An enrichment factor of 400-fold was obtained for Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Under the optimized conditions, detection limits for this method were 1.1 ng L^-1 and 1.4 ng L^-1 for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) with relative standard deviations of 5.1 and 6.3%, respectively. This procedure was applied for the separation, preconcentration and determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in environmental water samples and certified reference materials with satisfactory results. Recoveries of spiked experiments ranged from 86.0 to 112%.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with a magnetic nanocomposite followed by electrothermal atomic absorption measurement for the speciation of thallium

A magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction procedure for the determination of the thallium content in waters is presented. The incorporation in the sample (10 mL) of a small amount of graphene-Fe₃O₄ composite (3.6 mg) in the presence of 10^-4 mol L^-1 Aliquat 336 at pH 2 results in the complete retention of both thallium(I) and thallium(III). After separation with a magnet, the micro-solid phase recovered is treated with 0.05 mL of a 0.1 mol L^-1 sodium ethylenediaminetetracetate solution at pH 9, and the supernatant obtained after application of the magnet is introduced in the electrothermal atomizer of an atomic absorption spectrometer to obtain the signal corresponding to the total thallium content. For speciation, the trivalent form in a second sample aliquot is separated by means of a liquid-liquid extraction stage with chloroform and methyl trioctyl ammonium in the presence of bromide, and the signal corresponding to the monovalent form is obtained, the concentration of thallium(III) being obtained by difference. The enrichment factor is 185, which permits a detection limit as low as 0.01 μg L^-1 of the analyte to be achieved. The relative standard deviation for five measurements at the 0.1 μg L^-1 thallium level is below 5%. The reliability of the procedure is verified by analysing five certified reference samples for which speciation data are also given.

Development of Armillae mellea immobilized nanodiamond for the preconcentrations of Cr(III), Hg(II) and Zn(II)

In this study, we present an environmental friend and easy procedure for simultaneous preconcentration of Cr(III), Hg(II) and Zn(II) by solid-phase extraction before their determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Armillae mellea immobilized nanodiamond was used as sorbent. During the study, critical parameters influencing the extraction performance were investigated in detail. The best parameters were found as pH 5.0, 2.0 mL min^-1 of flow rate, 200 mg of Armillae mellea, 300 mL of sample volume. LOD values were found as 0.025, 0.13 and 0.038 ng mL^-1, respectively for Cr(III), Hg(II) and Zn(II). By applying the developed procedure, sensitivities of ICP-OES were improved for 60 fold for Cr(III), Hg(II) and Zn(II). Their concentrations in different food samples were measured after microwave digestion and solid-phase extraction.

Recent Advances in Electrochemical Monitoring of Chromium

The extensive use of chromium by several industries conducts to the discharge of an immense quantity of its various forms in the environment which affects drastically the ecological and biological lives especially in the case of hexavalent chromium. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors are useful devices for chromium determination. In the last five years, several sensors based on the modification of electrode surface by different nanomaterials (fluorine tin oxide, titanium dioxide, carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposite) and biosensors with different biorecognition elements (microbial fuel cell, bacteria, enzyme, DNA) were employed for chromium monitoring. Herein, recent advances related to the use of electrochemical approaches for measurement of trivalent and hexavalent chromium from 2015 to 2020 are reported. A discussion of both chromium species detections and speciation studies is provided.
